Chapter 15; Orphans and E.
Onier shrugged and Amyna sighed, realizing that she would have to tell most of the story due to Onier's general 'I don't talk much rule.' But he'd have to tell his part at least. Well, hopefully.
"So, Im an orphan. I have been pretty much my entire life. I was told that my dad was a war hero and my mom died in childbirth." Amyna felt a pang of sadness, even though she had never met them. She might not know them but they didn't mean she didn't wish she had. "So I lived in a small orphanage up in a small town bordering Alaska and Canada. It wasn't bad, no 'hard knock life' or anything like that. That being said, I was always the odd one out with the other kids. The last one picked. The last one in line, whatever. Probably because I was so hyper. . . even more so than I am now. I had even several foster homes but I was never the 'right fit' and always was sent right back to the orphanage."
"And because of that, whenever someone would listen, I'd talk. Though that was rare, so I slowly got more and more into technology as an escape. Something I could work with, that I could just enjoy working on," Amyna smiled at this before continuing. "I had, and still have, a knack for tech. I love the tinkering and twiddling before the pride of the final product. And so I built things and fixed things around the orphanage and life was one day to the next."
"Until he," Amyna jerked a hand at Onier, who shrugged. "Came along. We were complete and utter opposites. I liked attention. He hated it. I was an orphan. He had parents. His parents were strict and ridiculing. The orphanage was lax and calm."
"You wouldn't shut up and I would." Onier chipped in with a smirk, earning him a stuck out tongue from Amyna.
"The list goes on and on. But what's the saying...? Opposites attract? Yeah, that's it. So anyways, when he moved in, we met and became fast friends. We did pretty much everything together. Any games we played, homework and 'adventures'."
"Going on hikes in the woods is hardly an adventure, 'Myna." Onier stated, absently twirling his Bo staff.
"Well, it sounds better for a story, so put a sock in it." Amyna glared. "And stop calling me 'Myna. There is an 'A' in my name so say it! You don't see Oliver calling me that do you?"
"Hey," Oliver defended. "Don't bring me into this. I'm an innocent bystander."
"How are you a innocent bystander?"
"Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law." Oliver said.
Holiday coughed. "Um, can we get on with it?"
"Hmmmm? Oh, yeah." Amyna continued on. "So, everything was as normal as it could be, The Event came but there weren't any major repercussions of it. An EVO here, an EVO there but nothing huge. Providence even came once after a particularly nasty one. But of course something had to happen, otherwise I wouldn't be here, right? Right. Well, I went E.V.O."
"And not like right now." She shuddered, remembering how it'd been. The burning, the terror. "When it first happened, it wasn't controlled and all this. I was generating this...shield, I guess it was. But this one, I couldn't turn off and it was painful to the touch, instantly burning what it touched."
"I just hid until it went away. Ran out into a forest, found an overhang and just curled up in the fetal position. If nobody can find me, I can't hurt them, right? Until eventually it went away as fast as it came and I thought I was cured and I re-entered society." Amyna glanced at Onier. "Do you wanna talk at all?"
"No."
"Fine then. So I went back to the town and met up with Onier, as he was the only one I really trusted. I planned to tell him and just hope I wouldn't lose my only friend." Amyna laughed. "But he beat me to it! It ended up he had gone E.V.O too and confided in me. And I confided in him. We decided to keep it a secret."
"We did so and continued on with life-as-we-knew-it. Nothing really changed, except now we both had this underlying fear. Me, that I would lose control again and shield blast someone or something. Onier, that he'd put the entire town into a sleep that they couldn't wake up."
"As it turns out, we should have been even more careful than we were. Our powers were, are, unstable. One of us," Onier looked away guiltily at this. He didn't like remembering what had gone done that day. "Got angry and accidentally lashed out and well, the kid's fine now."
"And after that, we decided it wasn't real wise to hang around, so we made like bananas and split." Amyna laughed at her own joke. "And after a while we somehow ended up in Alaska and met Oliver. So, yeah. That's our story."
