Epilogue
"Oliver," Holiday's voice cut through the teen's ear piece.
He sighed, taking one last look. He'd snuck off for some alone time, climbing to the top of a nearby abandoned tower. He'd been sitting there, gazing out over the water for a while now, deep in contemplation.
After that showdown...
After that, he hadn't been the same. He felt hollow, as if more than just nanites had been ripped out. It felt like he was missing a bit of himself and gotten a whole of emptiness in return. He hated it.
Everyone else had noticed it too. His temper had been shorter lately. It was as if he had burning ember that he was constantly pressing down. It wasn't bad, per say, but noticeable at least.
And then there was the matter of his powers. He'd lost his control over Wind. Over Earth. Over Water. He never had realized how much he relied on them, even just knowing they were there. But now they weren't.
His fire had stayed. It had grown, in fact. He could make larger, hotter, more controlled flames. Make it faster, stand hotter temperatures. It was really the only positive thing so far.
"Oliver?"
"Yeah, yeah, sorry, Holiday," Oliver started, finally drawing himself to answer. "I just wanted some Me Time, you know?"
Here it comes. EVO attack or something and he'd have to head right back to base.
"Ah. I understand." The doctor's voice carried concern in it before Oliver heard a sigh. "You might want to come back to base though.
"What's up?" Oliver frowned. No order, just a suggestion.
"Those test results are done. I think I know wants causing your nanite problems. Everyone else is already here."
"I'll be back in five."
"Oliver, hermano!" Rex's excited yell filled up the lab as said teen walked in, shaking his head. "You said five minutes ten minutes ago. Doc won't explain anything 'till you got here."
"And with Rex's constant pestering about it while waited, Holiday should be named a saint," Amyna grinned, sticking out her tongue at Rex.
He returned the action.
"Knock it off you two," Six stated, shooting the them a look. "And I thought Rex and the monkey were bad."
Oliver snickered, turning from the spectacle back to Holiday. He wanted to know what his nanites were. And just as importantly, why it was an urgent matter. "Doctor Holiday? You said that you know how my nanites work?"
"Yes, I think I do," The doctor pulled a wisp of hair behind her ear, clicking keys on her computer and pulling up some type of model on the screen. "Now this is going to take a little bit of explanation, so bear with me."
On stud screen, five different types of nanites bounced around slowly. They seemed to be color coded, red, green, blue, purple, and white. Holiday motioned to them.
"Oliver, these are representation of your nanites. Or it used to be," She added the second part as afterthought. "Your nanites are odd. Instead of having one type inside of your body, you have several. Not many EVOs do that."
"Why would I have that?" Oliver frowned slightly.
"Well, it's pretty simple actually. It appears that each type of nanite controls a different 'element' if yours. Earth, Wind, Water and Fire," The green, purple, blue, and red nanites lit up respectively as she spoke.
"What about the white ones?"
"I'm getting to those." Holiday reassured. "So each color represents a different nanite and element. But they don't actually interact this calmly. From what I've studied, they actually seem to be at war. They all appear to want to have the highest population and control."
Before anyone could interrupt, she hit a key on the computer. The multicolored nanites, save the white ones, immediately started multiplying and violently colliding with each other.
Oliver winced.
"Obviously, this isn't ideal for the owner. So the white nanites act as a police, of sorts." Holiday said, hitting another key. Now the white ones activated, moving around. They didn't multiply as much but whenever they got closer to another color, they'd zap them. Soon the population of all the colors was fairly balanced and an equal number of each color was represented.
"So, I lost my other elements and gained more fire because now it doesn't have any opposition?" Oliver asked, slowly understanding the situation. "And that device removed the rest?"
"That's my understanding, yes," Holiday agreed. "But that's not all. It appears each nanite also had another function. They each augment emotions. Fire seems to increase anger, but is cancelled out by Waters calming presence. Wind makes one erratic, excitable and rash but Earth levels it off."
Oliver's eyes sent wide. That's why he was feeling so emotional lately. And that means...
"And when Nightwrath ripped those Nanites out, it threw your balance off. And released the freed nanites into the air." Holiday stated. "And they'll bond to a human."
"Are you saying-" White began only to be cut off.
"That's exactly what I'm saying. Oliver's nanites are loose." Holiday agreed. "And they're probably going to seek out someone, or someones, similar to the original host.
"Which means were going to have three EVO, elementally empowered and emotionally unstable kids on our hands."
