Companion one-shot. The morning of the ceremonial duel, Anzu has a letter for Yami. Prepare for the feels.

Parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 Lights/Nights/Sights/Reunions now up.

Yugi placed Yami's envelope inside his jacket, right above his heart. Typical Yami, he thought fondly, using papyrus and the wax seal of the Winged Dragon of Ra to write a letter to "a friend." As if sharing the same mind didn't alert him to the slight inflection in Yami's voice as he said "friend." Or the secretive scribbles Yami claimed were instructions for Kaiba...to be delivered by Anzu...because apparently she was better at explaining computer technology to Kaiba.

Right...

Yugi hid his snort as he humored Yami. "I promise she'll deliver your message, Yami. Here, look, she also has some...um...business advice...for...you to give to Kaiba."

My Dearest Pharaoh:

I asked Yugi to give you this letter.

I didn't want to say this to you in person. So I wrote this. A part of me desperately hopes it somehow gets lost in his jacket. Another part of me wishes you were reading this right now.

Here goes. Yami, I just wanted to wish you good luck today. I've already wished Yugi good luck this morning while you were busy writing your final notes for Seto. (I hope that holographic technology preservation contract worked out for you. Yugi made it sound very important. Who would have thought Kaiba would be the one to finally succeed in getting you to buy something?)

Anyways, that's actually that's not what I wanted to say at all. What I mean to say is that...crap...well since it's now or never, so I'm just going to spit it out.

Yami, I love you. You have been a constant light in my life. Without you the world feels darker, gloomier, sadder. I don't know what I'm going to do without you.

On some level I understand today is your destiny.I understand that you have to go. You don't have to explain anything. I've known for a long time that you don't...care for me any more than you care for Joey, Tristan, and the others. As much as that pains me, I understand.

I've noticed that lately you've adopted a wistful expression when you think no one else is looking. It's a girl, right? I bet she's beautiful, right? Only someone you love would make your eyes crinkle that adorable way. I've been one of the guys long enough to recognize it's love I see in your face. It's the same way Joey looks at Mai and the exact Duke and Tristan look at Serenity. (Funnily enough it's also the way Kaiba looks at himself in the mirror; you did put that in your advice to him this morning, right, to not be so...Kaiba about everything?)

Now that you have your memory back, Yami, you're going home. To her, right? I only hope she's every bit as beautiful as you are. I sincerely hope she is deserving of your love. I couldn't bear it if she didn't have a soul as wonderful as yours.

Not that you need it, but I approve of this girl, whoever she is. I can tell she makes you happy. You deserve that after what you've been through for the past five thousand years. I could never forgive myself if I kept you from her light.

Somehow, the expression you have been wearing now reminds me of the one I saw on your face during our day at the arcade. Dueling dance machines, remember? Your way with words has always made me smile. And I'm really glad that I made you laugh that day. Those occasions are so rare that I worry you're too busy saving the world to remember you matter, too.

Oh Yami. You've been so gloomy for the past few days that I fear you've somehow lost the light we've all tried so hard to help you find. Remember that girl when you feel sad. Whoever she is, she sure must be someone rare and special to make you so happy. Hold on to that light. My heart tells me that if she knew you loved her the way you do, she would place the world at your feet. You deserve that bliss more than anyone I know.

I...Yami...I wish you all the happiness life has to offer. Wherever you're going, I hope the love of your life will be by your side.

Go in peace, Yami. You have my love from now until eternity.

Anzu

Yami touched the letter above his heart as the doors to the afterlife closed.

If she only knew...
