Previously…. Bonnie did some tests on Jake after Fionna found out he can talk. Marceline doesn't know, but things have been quite, too quite.
We walk out of Bubblegum's lab, and down the hall.
"So…. Whose hungry!?" I ask, trying to act normal.
"ME! MEMEMEMEEMEMEMEEEEEEE!" Jake ran around in a circle at my feet. Finn and I laugh lightly, and walk into the kitchen. I open the cabinets, and look for something to eat. There are canned mushrooms, and corn beef. I look in the other cabinet, and find some potatoes. Nodding my head, I gather everything. I set everything out on the counter, and look through some more cabinets. I found garlic, and minced onions, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder.
"Finn! Get your butt in here, and help me make your bug-nuggin food!" I hear Finn run down the hall, and into the kitchen.
"What am I gonna do?"
"Clean, peel, and dice the potatoes." I said, draining the juice from the mushrooms. Putting the garlic in the pan, setting the stove to high. Minced onions joined the sweating spices, and I open the corn beef. I cut it up, and throw it in the pan. Turning on the fan above the stove, look at Finn, hoping he's done. I roll my eyes, as I turn off the corn beef. With a sigh, I make my way to Finn, and help him with the potatoes. After we peeled and diced the potatoes, I put them on the stove to boil. In ten minutes the potatoes were ready. I walk over to the potatoes, and dump them in the pan with the corn beef. When the hash is ready, I dump some out in Jakes bowl, and two plates. I set the bowl on the floor, and Jake comes in running, and begins chowing down. Finn and I soon follow suit. When were done I take care of the plates, washing them and putting them back where they belong. Finn and I sit on the fluffy couch, talking about training, when Marceline walks up to us.
"Do you two want to go out in the woods or something?"
"And do what, exactly?" I ask, giving her a wary look.
"Yah know, kill zombies, and jits like that. Come on, don't let me go out there all by myself." She looks at Finn and bats her eyes. All I want to do is slam her head into the cave walls. But I keep myself held back.
"Sure, I'm bored here anyway." I stand up and stretch, "Just let me go get changed." I walk into my room, and walk over to the drawer. Pulling out some shorts, and a shirt, I peel off my skinny jeans. Finn walks into the room, completely ignorant to the fact I'm half naked.
"DUDE! WHAT THE NUTS!?"
"Huh? OH! OOPS! SORRY FI!" He turns around, his face completely red, and flops down on my bed, and buries his head in his pillow. Shaking my head, I put on the spandex shorts.
"Okay Finny. You can look now." He peeks his head up from the pillow and smiles at me. I roll my eyes and sit down on his back. He flips around underneath me so I'm sitting on his stomach, and wraps his arms around my waist. I look down at him and he smiles softly. I roll my eyes and stand up, breaking his grip around my waist. I grab my backpack, and put my knifes inside. Pulling it over my shoulder I look back at Finn.
"You commin' with us? Or is it just gonna me and Marceline?" I cast a sideways glance at Finn, and he lifts his head.
"Mmmm… I could go. It's been a while since we trained together, hasn't it Fi?"
"Exactly my point. Come on Finny, let's go meet up with Marceline." We walk out of our room, and find Marceline waiting for us at the mouth of the cave with her bow strapped to her back, and a quiver of arrows strapped to calf. We make our way through the maze, and back into the charred woods. The acrid smell of rotting and burning flesh was still as strong as when we first were out here. We fallow Marceline in silence, Jake stayed at the cave just to make sure Bubblegum was going to be alright. No one really thinks that she can take care of herself. We finally found ourselves in a clearing. I took everything in, surveying the area.
'It feels weird here, like something's wrong with it. Like the Earth itself is infected.' All the grass is charred. The once healthy green blades are all black tipped, and small plumes of smoke are making their way into the heavy air. That's another thing that made me uneasy: the air. It's really thick. It's hard to breathe, and it feels like it's pressing down on my body. I feel that if we had to run out of there, we wouldn't be able to, that'd we'd get caught by those zombies. I shake my head and look at Finn. He's watching Marceline stretch, her bow laying on the ground in front of her. I roll my eyes and bring my foot up behind me and touch it to the back of my head. I do that with my other leg and then flop my arms down towards the ground. Slowly I pull myself up and freeze. Off in the distance there's a large form. It's bulking outline staggering through the smoke. Slowly I swing my backpack around and grab two knifes. I carefully inch to Finn and hand him one. He gives me a funny look and I realize neither of them have seen it yet. I yank my head in the direction of the shape, and Finn finally sees it. His knuckles turn white as he grips the knife.
"Marceline," he whispers, "grab your bow."
"What? Why?" She says, quite loud. The figure grunts and looks up. He's closer now. Marceline opens her mouth again, about to say something when I tackle her. I cover her mouth and shove her bow into her hands. She glares at me but all I do is point at the figure. Her eyes widen and she nods her head. I get into a crouching position, and pull Finn down with me.
"Are you ready for this?" I whisper to myself, not really expecting a reaction, when Finn answers me.
"I think so." I bite my lip.
'What will this do to him?' tears sting my eyes as I remember him earlier, laying in my arms sobbing. I shake my head. 'It's not time for that.' I focus on the lumbering form in front of us. Now he's really coming into view. Shaggy, greasy brown hair is coming off in clumps with the skin, and the grey of his skull is showing in some places. His stomach is ripped open and some of his ribs are chipped, and splintered. His organs are falling out and, mixed with the green acidic ooze spewing from his wounds, burning The fat from his at least 300 pound body is melting, and dripping inside him. He sniffs the air, and turns to look at us. He makes a guttural sound. At first I figure it's a growl, but when I listen more closely I realize that it's not a growl, but a gurgle, like he was choking on his own blood. Marceline slowly made her way into a crouching position, and placed an arrow in her bow and drew it back quietly. As she was about to release the arrow, the string broke with a loud snap. Her eyes widen, and she flings her head at us. I grab the first thing that I can from my backpack, and throw it at her. It's a hammer. The zombie turns toward us, and starts running, his teeth clicking together. When he gets close to us, me and Finn jump up, our legs uncoiling like springs. Finn stands his ground, and I run behind the large thing. Finn kicks it, and it stumbles back closer to me. I slash at his neck with the large knife in my hand. The zombie turns around and flings himself at me. My knife slides into his chest, doing absolutely nothing. Finn jumps on the zombie, and tries to cut its head off with his knife to no avail. The zombie flings its arms behind itself and sends Finn tumbling to the ground. The zombie turns back to me, and pushes me to the ground. I desperately try to remove my knife from its abdomen, but it keeps leaning on me. The handle of the knife is pressing into my diaphragm, making it hard to breathe. I start beating it, my hands being torn up. Finally, I decide to give up. I stop fighting. The zombie leans down, his mouth hovering above my neck, when someone flings their self on the back of the zombie. I hear a thwack, and I hear them screaming. I realize that it's Marceline, her hammer making its way to the bone. Soon enough the zombie was lying dead on the ground, the ooze burning away the grass under it.
"Fi! Fi! Are you alright!?" Finn makes his way to my side and holds me close to his chest. "When that zombie threw me, I passed out. I thought I lost you Fi. You can't leave me." I feel a tear fall on my cheek.
"Finn, I'm fine. Thanks to Marceline. Now stop crying. That's no way to make yourself look good in front of Marceline." I tease, as I wipe tears from his face. He shook his head.
"I don't care if I look like a huge, diaper wetting baby. I almost lost my best friend." He looks up at Marceline and smiled. "But thank you Marceline." I look up at her, and see that her shirt has holes in it, and that it's slowly burning. I look at her arms, and they have some small burns.
"Are you okay? You got burnt by that ooze."
"Oh, yeah I'm fine. It doesn't really hurt that much. I'll go see Bonnabell when we get back. Actually, we should probably go back to the cave. It's almost getting dark." Finn and I nod our heads, and clean off the weapons in the grass. As I put them back in my backpack we take off. Finn walks closer to me than he has and I know that he was terrified.
'He's probably going to end up in my bed again tonight.' I smile lightly and knock into him lightly. He grins and retaliates. We go back and forth, lightly bumping into each other as we slowly make our way to the cave. When we get there, we freeze. There's a figure stumbling through the woods across from us. I grab my backpack, pull out the knives, and hand them to everyone. We stand in a line, me in the middle. We jump out of the bushes when the form walks to the first wall of the maze. We stop when we see the form drop. Slowly we make our way to the smaller form. Finn gaps and drops his knife.
"FI! It's Ember! We have to help her! Fi! Please Fi! I can't lose her again!"
