"If you told me today our being together would result in heartbreak I would still choose to be with you because I believe that truly living life is in the experiences not the outcomes."

Chapter 5

The next morning, I slip into some jeans and a light t-shirt before padding barefoot into the kitchen and turning on the coffee maker.

Alex's snoring can be heard from the living room and I figure Peter had invited her over to watch me while he went out and got some information on the caller I.D.

After pouring myself a cup, I slip on a pair of sandals and grab my keys before heading out to pick up some pastries from the shop near the apartment building for Alex. I knew she'd be nice to me if I bribed her with sweets. Her and Luke had fought lately because he hadn't been around. I wasn't sure why that was though, I hadn't seen him either.

The bell above the door dings as I step in and I quickly order a few doughnuts, leaning against the counter and sipping my coffee as the girl behind the counter bustles around, stuffing the doughnuts into the bag.

I pat my pockets and sigh when I remember I forgot to grab the cell phone Peter had left me off the counter. Grabbing the bag of doughnuts, I sprint out of the store and smack into someone.

Letting out a surprised sound, I scramble backwards and make awkward motions with my hands in attempt not to spill my coffee or drop my doughnuts.

"Woah, steady" Large hands grip my waist, keeping me from falling backwards and I quickly thank them before looking up.

"Luke?" I raise an eyebrow, looking into a familiar pair of light eyes.

"Hey, stranger, haven't seen you in a bit" He smirks, dropping his hands.

"Heck yeah, no calls or texts..."

"Stop, now you sound like Alex" He mutters, shaking his head.

"Nothing wrong with that" I defend my friend and he nods.

"Yeah, you're right, she's just worried" I make a sound of agreement. "Anyhow, I got to get going, got a job to do"

"Yeah that minecraft tower isn't going to build itself" I tease, earning an eye roll before he disappears around the corner.

"I saw Luke" I tell Alex, dropping the bag of doughnuts in front of her on the coffee table. She wastes no time stuffing her hand in the bag and pulling a chocolate one out.

"Hmm, there's a first... haven't seen him since last week" She says through a mouthful of doughnut and I hand her a napkin in which she accepts gratefully.

"Well he seems busy... give him some time..."

"Is Peter always busy?" She questions and I shrug.

"Sometimes" If fighting crime and saving lives everyday counts as busy.

"Oh" Is all she says and I nod, grabbing a glazed doughnut. "Why did he send me over? I mean, not that I don't want to see you it's just... he called and... yeah" She shoves another bite of doughnut in her mouth before she can continue.

"Probably because we haven't hung out in a bit" I lie through my teeth and she nods.

"Yeah, we should go see a movie or something"

"I say we play minigolf" I offer and she giggles.

"You're such a child... how about build-a-bear"

I cross my arms across my chest, shaking my head. "And I'm a child?"

"Yes, you are" She defends. "How about... laser tag"

"The zoo?"

"Candy shop"

We volley a few more ideas around before we realize these attractions cost money. Quickly, we gather our wallets and place all of our bills on the coffee table.

Altogether we had about eighty.

"Let's just walk around and see what we can find" Alex says and I agree.

I should be anxious walking around the streets but I'm not. I know Peter would protect me if anything bad were to happen. Speaking of Peter...

"When did Peter call you?" I ask to Alex who walks along the busy sidewalk beside me.

"Oh, Uh, probably like seven this morning... I was going to kill him for waking me up but his tone of voice sounded pretty urgent" She shrugs and I nod my head. "Did you hear about the coffee shop?" Alex questions and I hum in response. "Crazy right?"

"Yup... pretty crazy"

"Some people are calling it a terrorist attack" She lowers her voice as she tells me this and I roll my eyes at this.

"People are just paranoid..."

"Welcome to New York..."

"And welcome to the Art museum" I point up to the large building with columns on it and Alex groans.

"Let's get this over with..."

"It will be fun"

"I'd rather poke my eyes out with forks" She mutters and I smirk.

"Then you can go to the café and poke your eyes out with forks while I take a selfie with Mona Lisa"

"The original Mona Lisa isn't even here..." Alex lets out another groan and i laugh.

"So, it looks pretty real!"

"But it's obvious it's not..."

"That's what they want you to think" I defend and she sighs.

"Like I said, let's get this over with"

After looking at a few exhibits and blocking out Alex's complaints on how some of the canvas' splattered with watercolor weren't even real art, we made our way out of the museum and down the steps.

"Thank goodness that's over... I didn't think I could stand another second in there"

"Stop your complaining" I groan and she shrugs.

She opens her mouth to retort but she's cut off by someone yelling my name. I turn to see Peter running towards us, a cup of something in his hand.

He slows as he approaches us, a smile spread across his handsome face.

"Hey Alex" He greets her before turning to me and placing a kiss on my lips. Alex makes a weird sound and I laugh.

"Hows your... research?" I ask him as he drapes his arm over my shoulders.

"Oh... it's good... I found some information"

"What's this research for?" Alex questions.

"Volleyball" I blurt out at the same time Peter says. "Job Search"

We exchange a glance before speaking again.

"volleyball" We both say and Alex sends us a weird look before brushing it off quickly.

"Can I talk to you, Amanda... alone" Peter asks and I nod.

"Sure but just for a few minutes" I respond and he nods, steering me away from Alex.

When he knows we are no longer within hearing distance from Alex he reaches his arm up, scratching the back of his neck in a way he always does when he's stressed or nervous. usually I find it cute but now for some reason it makes my stomach queasy.

"So I traced the number..." He sighs and I nod my head.

"Any luck?" I ask, anxious to report the criminal who caused the chaos at the café.

"Kind of... you're going to think I'm crazy if I say it" He begins pacing and I sigh.

"I already think you're crazy... you have nothing left to lose" I mutter and he chuckles.

"Very supportive, honey"

"Thanks, I try, now spill the beans" I gesture for him to carry on and he sighs.

"I traced the number and here's the address" He leans forward, handing me the slip of paper and I read it over a few times.

I can feel my eyes widen and my fingertips go numb as I glance up from the paper to a worried looking Peter.

"This can't be right..." I pause, holding the paper up to Peter. "This is my apartment"
