My eyes were focused on the events outside the tiny window as the aeroplane lifted itself off run way. I felt the seat shift slightly as Klaus took his seat beside me in the first class section of the plane which separated us from the many hybrids he had sired.

"Everything is sorted love," he informed me. "We'll be in Mystic Falls in no time." I didn't respond, my features still watching the land below us soon drift away. "Sweetheart?"

"I heard you," I mumbled, leaning my head against the side of the aircraft.

"You've hardly said anything since I had word from Stefan," his stated through a worried tone.

"I wouldn't want to interrupt your plans," I mumbled.

"Caroline what's on your mind?" I flickered my gaze onto him for a second before looking back. "If it's about what happened at the river…we"

"No, it's not."

"Then what is sweetheart?" He waited as I gathered my thoughts.

"Doesn't it seem…strange to you? Elena Gilbert daggered Mikael? Elena Gilbert out of all people managed to dagger him..."

"Stefan Salvatore is compelled to speak the truth love, he wouldn't lie."

"I know…it's just it seems too weird."

"You're finally looking out for me," he smirked.

"Oh you wish," I giggled softly, slapping his knee.

"At least I made you laugh. I haven't done that in a while." His smirk softened for a moment as his features faded into a more serious stance. "You never gave me the verdict, as to whether you wanted to continue as my wife?"

"That's a little complicated," I sighed. "I think we both know how each other feels, but that doesn't mean it is right."

"I disagree sweetheart, there are no rules about who you cannot love in this day and age."

"You do so many things that I disagree with. These hybrids for instance, taking away people's freedom. I know you want power and all but having an army isn't the answer Klaus. And about being alone. You're not." I moved my hand over his, squeezing it gently. "I'll be your wife Niklaus, but just prove to me that underneath this hard exterior you're still the man I love." He moved his hand to my cheek caressing it gently.

"I'm still here Caroline," he murmured as his eyes poured into my own.

"But not completely," I sighed, pulling away from him.

KLAUS

I had been planning this party for centuries, waiting for the moment when Mikael would vanish from our lives. Caroline had raised my paranoia on the plane when she spoke about whether he truly was gone but that wouldn't stop me from celebrating. Whether the guest of honour was dead or alive at first I knew with my newly created army I was safe, Caroline and I were safe.

I knew I could count on my hybrids to organise everything perfectly. The gym at Mystic Falls High was flooded after the water pipes were cut under my order as what's a party without guests? Tyler Lockwood's home would be more suitable for their 'Homecoming' and thankfully he had everything under control with my sister's help. She had managed to follow my instruction of watching over him in my absence.

I stood in one of the guest bedrooms in the Lockwood mansion waiting for Caroline to leave the bathroom. Carol Lockwood had been compelled from the premises while Tyler did my bidding. I have the estate to myself for the evening. I had given Caroline an elegant pink dress to wear which would hang just above the knee. I was overjoyed by her response to stay with me. I knew eventually she'd be comfortable with me like she was before. She would just need time.

"Hair up or down," her memorable tone brought my gaze to her figure as she stood in the doorway. As expected the dress suited her perfectly.

"Down," I answered with a smile after she demonstrated my choices. I loved her golden curls flowing freely down her shoulders. "You look beautiful my love." Without another word she disappeared back into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.

CAROLINE

I watched from the edge of the stage as Klaus took is position in front of the band that had finished playing. I felt like something was lifted from my chest once we returned. It felt right, being here with him.

"Good evening everyone!" To my surprise the crowd roared at my husband, cheering for him when they knew nothing of the pain he had caused this town. The pain which my heart had somehow bypassed. "I would like to thank you for being here with me to celebrate! It's been a long time coming!" His eyes searched the crowd, landing on Rebekah who stood beside Stefan, Elena and a few others before they came to me. He let his gaze lead him back to me.

"How did I do?" Klaus asked as he took my hand and placed it through his arm, like old times, once he stepped from the stage.

"The crowd liked you so good," I shrugged unsure about what he wanted me to say.

A few students from Mystic Falls high school recognised my face and greeted me as we walked around. I didn't know where we were heading but I felt safe. Rebekah gave me a soft smile when she saw me arm in arm with her brother.

"Ah Stefan," Klaus brought my attention back onto an old friend. "Thanks for the heads up mate." Stefan nodded, his eyes glancing over to me.

"Quite the party you have going," Stefan's eyes danced over our surroundings.

"I've been planning my father's funeral for a thousand years," Klaus mused. "None of these people were invited nor the dreadful music but you get the idea."

I watched Stefan sceptically as I was still unsure about whether Mikael's demise was true. I trusted him, but I knew he'd so anything for Elena.

"So, what now?" Stefan asks curiously.

"Now I reunite my family."

"Really? All of them?" I asked happily, I'd been waiting for this moment. "Including Finn?"

"After all these years you still want to meet my bore of a brother?" Klaus smirked softly. "Yes, including Finn although don't hold your high expectations. My brother won't fulfil them."

"And you will leave town? All of you?" Stefan's words were more of a demand than a question.

"Mystic Falls is our home as much as it is yours Stefan, so I'm afraid I can't guarantee anything." Stefan's eyes moved to me again, seeing if I could persuade him in any way. I didn't make any attempt. "Now where is the guest of honour? My Father, bring him to me."

"All right but perhaps there is something in it for me?" Klaus raised a brow, waiting to hear what Stefan wanted. "My freedom from your compulsion?"

"Your freedom? Well, once I see Mikael is dead and his weapon destroyed, you'll have your freedom," Klaus smiled softly moving closer to his old friend, tapping his shoulder. "It'll be my pleasure to give it back."

KATHERINE

Damon Salvatore had a good plan for a change. I hoped that for once in my life something would go the way I wanted. I wanted Klaus dead. He murdered my family, my family, leaving me with no one. I had Caroline for a best friend but even she couldn't go against her husband, the man she loves.

I stood at a distance from Caroline, Stefan and the hybrid himself acting as Elena while Matt had disappeared to get me another drink. Thankfully I had perfected my Elena façade, allowing no one to see through it.

I tried to catch Caroline's eye, I felt like I owed her to get out of this trap. We may be on different sides but she's still my best friend. Within a matter of moments I noticed her leaving her husband's side.

"I'll be back in a minute," she announced slipping away from Klaus' arm. To my surprise he let her leave although his eyes were focused on his wife. I would have to get her away if we had a chance of talking in private.

"I see your relationship is healing," Stefan observed from behind Caroline's departing figure. A part of me hoped this was true and yet our scheming would hurt her. I didn't want that but it was inevitable.

"It's getting there," I could hear the proud smirk in Klaus' voice.

As Caroline neared me, I didn't make any effort to move away from her.

"I know I'm the last person you want to talk to right now but…" I immediately cut her off.

"Save it Caroline," I sighed before walking away, wanting to lead her away from our audience.

"Elena please?" Caroline continued to try, following me. Knowing that my best friend couldn't see through my disguise gave me confidence that I was putting on an amazing show. Not that I needed it. I led her into the Lockwood house, where blaring music played. I knew Klaus wouldn't be able to hear us from in here.

"Save your words Care, it's Kat," I smirked.

"Kat?" Her features turned confused. "What are you doing here as Elena?"

"Damon asked me to stand in for Elena to keep her safe from Klaus," I answered honestly.

"You're helping Damon?" She paused until her features turned sour. "I was right…this is a trap isn't it? You're trying to kill him?" She gasped taking a step back.

"Caroline you know this is the right thing to do," I tried to convince her but from what I'd seen things were doing well for Klaus and her.

"Isn't not! I know I said horrible things about him but there is still good in him!" Caroline pleaded. The humans around us were too busy partying to the loud music outside to notice our conversation.

"He killed my family Caroline, murdered them," I sighed softly, pulling her into an embrace. "I'm sorry Caroline, but I must do this." Before she could respond I snapped her neck, leaving her behind the large screen where no human would look and flashed away to where I needed to be.

CAROLINE

"..come to any moment," I heard Klaus' voice while I recovered from my temporary death. I slowly fluttered my eyes open to find his hands soothingly brushing my hair away from my face. "Are you okay sweetheart?" I nodded.

"Mikael?" I demanded to know his fate.

"Dead," he smirked. "And Stefan has earned his freedom by saving me from his brother. I'm no longer on the run."

"And your family?"

"We will be reunited soon enough love." I smiled softly before sitting up and leaning my head against his shoulder.

"Where is Rebekah?" I asked softly, noticing her presence was elsewhere.

"Daggered." I sat up and glared at him.

"What did she do to earn that?"

"I found her beside you."

"And you haven't awoken her?" I scolded him, wanting to know the reasons for this.

"All in good time love. How did you end up with a broken neck?"

"Kat snapped my neck when I realised it was a trap."

"Katerina was there?"

"She was posing as Elena, but who daggered Rebekah? A vampire dies using it."

"Compulsion love." I sighed knowing he was right. I settled down against him again.

Before he could respond with more than his signature smirk the hybrid standing by the door in a guard like position gasped heavily before dropping to the ground. Klaus flashed from his position pulling me up with him. I stood peaking from behind him as to what was happening.

"Elijah," I breathed at the sight of my older brother-in-law. The brunette original dropped the hybrid's heart with a platter to the ground before wiping away the remaining blood on his fingers with his handkerchief.

"Niklaus," Elijah stepped over the lying body. "Caroline, it is a pleasure to see you again." I tried to move around Klaus but he refused. "From the look on your faces it is clear that it wasn't you that removed the dagger from my chest."

"You thought wrong," Klaus spoke through gritted teeth. Elijah pounced forward attacking his brother after his betrayal. Klaus pushed me away causing my figure to fall into the soft cushions on the sofa. "You know you have every right to be mad at me," he continued as both brothers fought each other. "But I kept my word, I reunited you with our family."

I couldn't bear to watch this. I had to do something. I thought for a moment before speaking loud and clear.

"Mikael is dead." As expected Elijah stopped and stared at me.

"What did you just say?" He stalked closer to me.

"It's true brother," Klaus confirmed. "I killed him with his own weapon. He's gone Elijah. Forever."

"So why does our family remain in coffins?" Elijah exclaimed gesturing to the room he came from.

"It only just happened Elijah, am I not allowed a moment with my wife?"

"Well then," Elijah dusted of his suit before flashing from the room back to where the coffins rested. Klaus followed, and so did I.

Elijah was already opening one of the coffins to reveal a face I hadn't seen in a long time. Kol Mikaelson. Elijah reached for the dagger in his brother's chest.

"Stop!" Klaus yelled. "There are only four coffins…where is the fifth?"

"These were the only ones here when I woke up," Elijah stood poised holding Kol's dagger without removing it.

"It was here," Klaus growled angrily.
