Chapter Eight: Alpha Pendan
I agreed to go to Tess's gig only because she had guilt tripped me into it.
So here I was standing outside Ghede Loa in a queue where Tess would be singing tonight. Opal stood next to me looking stunning in a navy blue dress that clung to her body, while I wore a plain strapless black dress that stuck to me like a second skin. Opal had forced me into it saying that I needed to at least make an effort for a change. I decided to keep my hair down as I couldn't be bothered to hide my mark on my neck with a spell so it was hanging in soft curls while Opal had straightened hers.
The music coming from inside was so loud I swear it was shaking the entire building. The bodyguard outside was definitely a vamp as I could smell the sickly vanilla scent coming from him. I knew the club was a supernatural one because all the humans were turned away. At least there weren't going to be any Helios–Ra around here. Really the name of the place said it all really 'Ghede Loa' meant the spirits of the dead which literally screamed supernatural anyway.
'Ladies.' He smiled moving out the way and letting us in.
'Remind me again why I agreed to come here?' I asked Opal as we walked into the building and I was immediately hit by a thick wall of hot air. Bodies were writhing and grinding on the dance floor while others mingled in booths which were up a set of stairs to my right or at the bar, to be honest I don't know how they could hear each other at all as I couldn't even hear myself think but supernatural hearing does have an advantage now and then. 'I'm going to get a drink.'
I left Opal who seemed to have a caught the attention of some male's already. I was going to stay away because I could sense they were werewolves and I did not want to get killed tonight or at any point in the future.
I knew Tess was doing everything she could to cover my scent but if she lost her concentration or the wolves knew what I looked like then I was in big trouble. I reached the bar and took a subtle look around the place and realized that this bar was filled mainly with wolves. There were vamps here and there but most vamps and werewolves didn't along because they always fought and one side would either die or lose something precious to them. So they tended to stay away from each other or create a truce to stay away from each other.
I ordered a red wine and sat on the bar stool trying to go unnoticed. I glanced over at the dance floor where my cousin was now dancing with a group of men; I looked away and saw Lucy making her way over to me with a girl and a boy a bit older than her.
'Lucy.' I smiled, I had decided it was pointless to still be angry with her and Tess but they had some serious groveling to do.
'Hey!' she grinned hugging me. 'Kayda, this is Solange Drake and Nicholas Drake.' She pointed to the girl and boy.
'Nice to meet you.' I said. 'I've heard a lot about you guys from Lucy. You better keep her safe.' I warned them.
'We sure are.' Nicholas tugged Lucy to his side and she rolled her eyes while Solange smiled.
'Are you living here from now on?' Solange asked me.
I shrugged. 'I don't know, I don't want to put anyone in danger so if people start to get hurt I'll leave.' She didn't say anything just nodded and wandered off to talk to some other people that had caught her attention.
I sipped my wine while Nicholas and Lucy were busy talking to each other and I scanned the place quickly. I was a cautious person and I always checked an area out when I sat down to see the exits. So far there was the stage door exit and the way that I had come in to get out – wait make that three exits. I just spotted a pair of double doors that led to a garden of what I could see, there were too many people in the way. I looked around my surroundings again just to double check and leaned my elbows on the bar counter behind me.
'Can I buy you a drink?' a male spoke two seats away from me. He had honey blonde hair which I'm sure he spent a lot of time on considering the way it was styled and he had deep blue eyes like the ocean which any girl would swoon over.
'No.' I said getting up and carrying my glass with me, I was in no mood to deal with tipsy males who got cocky and confident at clubs. He grabbed my wrist and I froze. He was a werewolf, I felt stupid that I hadn't noticed sooner which made me angry at myself. 'Get off me.' I replied quietly not looking at him and I knew he could hear me because he slowly let go of my wrist and I walked away quickly not looking back. I knew he knew what I was and I intended to get as far away as I could from him. Opal spotted me and pushed her way over to me. The club was big but not that big that you couldn't see the walls.
'Having fun?' I smiled.
'Yeah, it's been a while since I've been to club like this and it helps me relax a little.' She smiled at me grabbing my glass and finishing it off for me. 'You seem a little tense.'
'Gee, I don't know why. Maybe because I'm surrounded by werewolves.' I whispered yelled at her and set the glass on a table nearby. 'And vampires.' I added.
'You need to relax for a bit!' Opal dragged me over to the bar and started ordering vodka shots.
'No!' I pushed away the shot glass but Opal persisted. 'Fine!' I snapped taking one and drank it in one go. 'Happy now?'
'Nope, not until your tipsy.' Well that was going to take a long time. Alcohol didn't have an effect on me like with humans, my werewolf gene made it nearly impossible to get drunk. If wanted to get tipsy I would have to keeping downing drinks all the time. There were rumors that if a vampire bit you, there was euphoria because when you got bit they let out endorphins to ease the pain for the person being bit. Apparently it was quite a high but it only lasted a couple of minutes unless you wanted to be blood bank to a vampire.
'Why don't you just go and dance?' I suggested and handed her a shot glass which she carried away with her. After a minute the music dulled and the curtains were being hoisted up. Tessa was up. I smiled making my way through front of the crowd and found Opal with Lucy, Solange and Nicholas.
'Hey.' I smiled.
'Tessa is such an amazing singer. She'll be happy that you came.' Lucy hugged me tightly. I laughed and waved at Tessa on the stage who smiled when she saw me.
'What song is she singing?' Solange asked.
'Counting Stars by One republic.' Lucy replied.
I looked back at Tess who seemed really relaxed on stage holding her guitar with the spotlight her and behind her I could just make out backup singers. She started the song with her guitar and people were cheering around me already.
The song soon picked up the pace and she was singing and I started dancing to the beat. It was one of my favorite songs. I put my hands in the air clapping along like everyone else in the crowd when suddenly I felt myself being lifted up, I looked up to see Tess trying to get me on stage. I looked at her weirdly but pulled myself up and danced alongside her and when there was a break in the song she quickly spoke to me.
'You need to get out, werewolves blocking entrances.' I nodded along as if I was nodding along the beat so dancing. Solange, Lucy and Opal seemed to know that something was wrong and climbed up to. And Tess began singing again. I looked at each exit and Tess was right, everywhere was blocked – I was going to have fight my out. I could even some people in the crowd trying to make their way to the front.
'They're armed with silver.' Opal looked at me and said quietly that I only could hear. Shit. Silver was poisonous to me if it was in my blood long enough. Just a little scratch from a silver knife could make me ill and if it was a deep wound then I could die. I had no idea what these werewolves were armed with but it was not good no matter what. I looked around at the stage exit trying not to be so obvious and that was blocked too. I had a small dagger strapped to my thigh and before I thought about it, I jumped onto the crowd and crowd surfed all the way to the bar countertop. I quickly reached for my dagger and ran at the nearest exit which was the one that led to the garden and stabbed the guy who was blocking it; it was enough to injure so he was out of action but not to kill – I didn't like really killing unless my life absolutely depended on it. I quickly took my chance and ran out through the door running at the brick wall, I was halfway up when I was tackled down and my knife went flying. The air was knocked out of me as I landed on the floor and couldn't do anything but gasp as I was dragged away from the wall. I started to wiggle and struggled as soon as I caught my breath again and began kicking and hitting out at whoever it was because I was lying on my stomach so I couldn't really see anything.
It wasn't too long until my arms were pinned above my head and my legs were tied together. I knew they were werewolves because of the earth smell that radiated through the air, I silently prayed to whoever was up there to help me get out but of course that wasn't going to happen. I still kept trying to get the attacker to loosen their grip but it was like trying to push a fallen tree off you and I knew that from experience.
'Stop struggling.' A voice commanded and I felt the power radiating off him meaning he was the alpha – the big boss. I sighed heavily and laid still, it was no good going against the alpha, I didn't really want to piss him enough so that he'd kill me or hand me over to the wolves were hunting me. I felt my hair being pulled aside. 'So you're the one they're hunting.' The voice spoke.
'I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about you know.' I said, I felt warm fingertips tracing my mark and then my hair was let go and it dropped onto my neck again.
'Don't lie to me, I know when you lie.' Oh great he was one of the annoying werewolves that could sense when people lied.
'Fine.' I snapped making him snarl. 'Just let me up will you?'
The alpha didn't say anything he just stood up as I felt the weight lift off me and I could finally breathe properly. Then I was yanked up harshly.
'You?' I asked in confusion my eyebrows frowning. It was the guy from the bar but he definitely was not the alpha.
'I'm the alpha.' I looked next to him and there was another guy. He was also good looking; like all werewolves are so it wasn't much of a surprise. But his complexion was darker than the other guy.
'And you are?'
'I just told you, I'm the alpha.'
'I know that.' I replied in irritation, 'I mean what's your name?' if I knew his name then I might know who he was but back in California I always stayed behind if they were visiting other packs because it was safer that way for me so I didn't know any scents but I did know the names and what sort of pack the led as I was filled in by the others from California.
'James.' He replied turning to his beta. I wanted to slap this guy seriously.
'James what?' I asked clenching my jaw to try and contain my irritation.
'Lark.' He snapped back. 'James Pendan.'
That shut me up. I had heard of James Pendan; apparently he was like a really bad ass alpha and killed any rogues on site no questions asked whatsoever. I shuddered involuntarily and I caught James smirking from where he was talking to his beta, he was probably one of the most powerful alphas ever. Since he was so distracted talking, I looked up at the guy who was holding my arm judging whether or not I could knock him out and I decided I could quite easily. I did a quick a survey of the place and I wobbled about on the spot as it was difficult standing still when you have your ankles tied really tightly together.
'Come someone cut me loose before I fall on my but?' I asked out loud hoping someone would. I was basically horizontal as I jumped up and down to maintain my balance. Two guys were at the entrance to the bar and there were about five guys around the garden then the beta and the alpha in the middle with a guy holding me tightly. There was most definitely more werewolves in this pack but they hiding in the dark so when I tried for my escape I was going to have to one of the most luckiest people alive ever as I didn't know where the other members were hiding. I was going to have to use a little bit of magic to get me out this situation too, I looked at the wall and slowly started to create vines for my escape hoping that I wasn't attracting any attention but no one said anything and no one shouted in warning.
'Nate, untie her feet.' James said from where he was standing not bothering to look at me. Nate, that guy that was holding my arm really tightly almost cutting off the blood circulation in my left arm, bent down letting go of my arm and cut through the rope that tied my ankles together. I took the chance that he had given me and kicked him in the face before jumping and bringing my arms underneath me so now they were in front of me and I was able to use them properly.
I created a barrier around me so they couldn't get me; sometimes it was great being part witch. James prowled towards me snarling, the other wolves were behind him watching and growling too. I smiled smugly which I knew would irritate them even more. I had to be quick now as barriers used a load of energy to create which is why witches used crystals as a ward instead but this was an emergency.
'You won't catch me again.' I said before burning the rope off my hands quickly and ran for the brick wall where I created the vines and jumped down on the other side when I reached the top. I was really, really tempted to change into my wolf as I would be a lot faster on four then two legs but it was just too much of risk. I ran down the alley well aware of the fact that I was being chased. I turned right and ran across the road – thankfully there was no traffic to run me over. I didn't look over my shoulder as I didn't need to see to know that they were right behind me, I had super hearing for that.
At the end of the road there were two massive blacked out range rovers that blocked my way making me almost skid to a stop but I remembered I was being chased by pissed off wolves so I would rather run forward instead of backwards. It didn't take long for me realize that the range rovers were here for me because Opal had just got out and was glancing worried behind me. Lucy and Solange were with her as well as some very cute boys. The distance between me and them wasn't much and I was so relieved when I was through the barrier of guards and away from the wolves.
'Oh god. We couldn't get to you in time and by then it was too late. Solange got a hold of her family and we weren't sure you were going to come this way but Tess knew and so I hoped that we got here in time and I'm so glad we did. God, I was so worried about you.' Opal rambled on and I had to cut her off.
'I'm fine.' I said pulling out of her death grip. I turned to see a lot of wolves snarling in my direction.
'Are you okay?' Liam asked walking towards me and I nodded. 'Good.'
James walked out in his human form fully clothed.
'Liam.' He nodded.
'James.' Liam replied.
'I see you have her.' James said glaring at me.
'Yes and she's under our protection.'
'Why wasn't I made aware of this?' James demanded.
'Would you not of killed her?' Liam responded.
James shook his head. 'Sam and I are good friends, he trusted me enough to help protect her.' That was not what I was expecting to hear. It was also more bad news for me. I really hate bad news at the moment, why can't I have some fricking good news for a change?
'W-what?' I stammered. 'He knew?' I thought James didn't hear me but he obviously did.
'Your parents did everything but of course being the fiancée of the alpha you couldn't hide it that well.' James responded. I thought I did everything in my power to make sure Sam didn't know; how the hell did he find out? I looked over at Opal who had turned even whiter and I knew she didn't know about Sam knowing either.
'Wait. You were engaged?!' Lucy asked stunned. I nodded and turned my attention back to James.
'How do I know I can trust you?' I asked walking out of the safety of people who were trying to protect me. 'How do I know that isn't just some trick?'
'Can we talk somewhere private?' he asked and glanced over at Liam.
'Back at my house as I'm sure Kayda will feel better there?' Liam said when I looked back at him. He looked at me for the go ahead and I nodded at him and that's when I was pricked with a dart on my arm. I yanked it out hissing and knew something was wrong as soon as I fell to my knees. I smelt the end of dart and dropped it beside me instantly.
'Silver.' I barely managed to say before I fell face first into the concrete and blacked out.
