Chapter Nine: Explanations
My body ached especially my face. I felt like someone had run me down with a lawn mower and shredded me to pieces and then glued me back together. I didn't want to open my eyes or even move but I groaned when something touched my arm. '
Kayda?' a voice asked as I tried to place who it was. I gave up and opened my eyes; I looked up to the person.
'Opal.' I grinned.
'You gave me such a scare!' she frowned slapping my arm which hurt and I winced.
'Help me sit up.' I said struggling by myself. She sighed but adjusted my pillows and helped me.
'I swear each time the silver affects you more and more.'
'Really, this is how I feel every time.' I rolled my eyes, Opal always worried.
'You weren't passed out like normal; you were gasping for breath and thrashing all over the place. I had to sedate you.' I could see the tears welling up in her eyes and I felt really guilty.
'I don't know then but I do know that I'm fine now.' I said gesturing her closer so I could give her a hug. 'Can we get some food? I'm starving.' And I was, my stomach growled and Opal laughed.
'Sure, come one.' She said helping me up.
'Where are we? This isn't my bed.' I said just now realizing that I had no idea where I was.
'The Drake household, James is here too and be warned they have a lot of questions.' She warned me. Great. I wasn't sure of what to think of James, he seemed nice enough but I didn't know if I could trust him. Sure he and the Drake's seemed to have some sort of truce but still, he did know what I was and I hated people knowing. It always ended in disaster – take my parents for example.
Opal led me out the room and down a long corridor before going down some polished oak stairs and into the room which was the kitchen.
'What would you like?' she asked.
'Surprise me?' I wasn't bothered at the moment; I was too busy looking round noticing some photos here and there of the family.
'All right then.' She said setting to work.
'Where is everyone?' I asked.
'There vamps remember? Sun burns them.' Opal looked at me as if I was dumb.
'Sorry forgot.' I held my hands up in surrender.
'Tess is at home, Lucy's somewhere and James is in the sunroom waiting to talk to you but won't until Liam and Helena are awake which will be in about an hour's time, so I suggest that you clean yourself up.' she turned back to making me food and I looked down at myself. Yeah, I needed to have a shower. My dress was ripped and dirty and I could tell by touching my hair that it probably looked like a birds nest.
She made me poached eggs on toast and orange juice which I scoffed down quickly and hurried upstairs back to the room I was in when I woke up. Thankfully someone had put clean clothes at the end of the bed for and they were roughly my size.
The en suite had a massive shower with toiletries arranged along the shelves. I took my time just relaxing as the hot water ran down my back. I rubbed my neck a couple of times and washed my hair. I stayed in a bit longer until I decided that I had to get out and answer to the firing squad of questions that were surely going to come my way soon enough. I quickly dried myself with a fluffy blue towel that was left out for me too and changed into the black jeans and top that was neatly folded.
My dress unfortunately went straight into the bin.
Literally the first step that I took out of the room I was tackled to the ground. I was too surprised to even try and get the attacker off me. I blinked up in shock at a pair green eyes that I had seen before.
'What the hell do you think you're doing?!' I demanded once I realized that I was being pinned to the floor by Duncan Drake.
'What do you think you're doing here?!' he snarled. I glanced at the window and saw that sun was just setting.
'Ur, your family kind of saved my butt.' I said and he looked confused so I took that as a distraction and kneed his prized jewels and quickly pushed him off me. He recovered quickly and tried yanking me down but I was ready and side stepped. 'What have I done to piss you off now? I don't even know you. I'm actually getting sick of people attacking for now so if you don't mind just leave me alone.' He lunged for me again but I caught his arm and pushed into the wall and squeezed his neck tightly. 'Just don't, okay? You really do not want to piss me off.'
'What's going on here?' a voice asked behind me. Oops. I let go of Duncan and turned round which was a massive mistake on my part as Duncan jumped on top of me and I crumpled to the floor not expecting the sudden attack.
I clenched my fists forcefully stopping myself from shifting and squeezed my eyes shut. If your body was going to shift, it was going to shift and I had trained myself to stop myself because my anger always seemed to get the better of me sometimes. I tensed urging my body not to, I could feel my teeth lengthen and my nails grow longer. I breathed in deeply and out for what seemed forever before my teeth and nails retracted to normal.
By this time Duncan had got off me and was watching as well as Liam and some other people I didn't know. It took a lot of energy as I was breathing heavily and I leaned against the wall, hands on my knees. 'I'm good.' I said already wobbling about trying to make my to the stairs but Liam stopped me.
'Are you okay?' he asked. I nodded and swayed, Opal was there supporting my weight as I tried to gain my strength back.
'Asshole.' I snarled at Duncan who just shrugged his shoulders still glaring. Opal helped me down the stairs and I sat on a chair in the lounge.
'What was that?!' A guy asked who filed in last.
'She forced herself not shift, stupid really.' James said walking in and I glared at him.
'If I shift they'll find me what was I supposed to do?' I snapped. He rolled his eyes and stood near the window.
'Why are there werewolves here?' Duncan asked, disgust evident in his tone.
'They are guests so either go or be quiet.' Liam stared him down. A final glare threw his way and sat down on the armchair.
Lucy rushed in with Nicholas next and sat down next to me and gave me a tight hug. 'I was so worried about you.' She said.
'I'm fine.' I smiled.
'But why didn't you tell me you were engaged?!' she slapped my arm.
'Was.' I corrected. 'I was engaged.'
'Let's start from the beginning.' Liam suggested standing with a woman with dark hair that was braided down her back.
'Okay, I'll start from the beginning.' I breathed in deeply. 'Basically my mom was a witch and my dad was a werewolf, in the eyes of werewolves it is seen as a taboo because their offspring are stronger, faster and harder to kill depending if they have the mark. If not they'll either be one or the other. Our scents are just like any other werewolves scents so we fit in easy among werewolves and they don't suspect a thing –until they learned about the mark we bear on the back of our necks.'
'May we see?' the woman asked and I nodded. I stood up and turned round to lift my hair up and show them.
'It looks like a birthmark.' A male voice and I turned round to see who had said. He looked a lot like the rest of the brothers dark haired but blue eyed instead.
'It's the symbol for a nachanthen which means wolf witch. In my pack the reason why werewolves are so superstitious of us is due to the curse on my family from my mother's side.' I recited the curse to them and tried to explain as much as I could too them but it was difficult with a certain Drake glaring at me all the way through my explanation. 'I moved here as the alpha found out and was also my fiancée. It didn't go very well due to my part but what's done is done.' I finished with.
'So your parents got were because of your mark?' I think the person who asked was called Connor.
'No, my mum was killed by rogues when she was out by herself and my dad…my dad was killed by vampires.' I said trying not to think about it too hard. 'I don't want to hurt my pack but they aren't really leaving my any other choice as well as involving the rest of the supernatural community. So you see, I need your help.'
'This is what Sam asked me to do, help protect you.' James said from the window.
'How would you know?' I snarled. As you can tell Sam was a bit of touchy subject for me. 'Last time I saw him, he was with another woman in bed.' I fumed and stormed out the front door slamming it shut on the way out. I sat down on the porch hunched over willing myself not to cry. Why would Sam even ask James? It's not like he has to worry about me anymore.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I walked in seeing Mia and Sam together, that's how the whole pack found out. I literally tore the house apart whilst flinging my engagement ring at his face.
'Hey.' Opal said as she shut the front door quietly behind her unlike me. 'You okay?' I nodded.
'I've been here what a month, two months? And I still can't get over him.'
'You were together since you sixteen.' She said.
'But why, why didn't he tell me he found his mate?' I said bitterly. Another reason I hated him, because I was two things my mum said it would be unlikely that I would find my mate and even if I did, I wouldn't recognise it.
'I don't know hun but what I do know is that this family is willing to help you fight for your life and James pack which I may add he is very good looking.' She smiled. I looked up at her and realised what had happened. I punched her lightly on the arm.
'Why didn't you tell me?!'
'Well, you've just gotten sorted and it wasn't the right time.' Opal shrugged.
'Does that mean you're moving out?' I asked sadly. It would be really lonely and quiet without someone else in the house with me.
'What? Oh god no! I'll wait until everything gets sorted, plus we can't go back to yours as it isn't safe Kayda. For someone so smart, you can be really dumb sometimes!'
'Hey!'
'It's true though! Think about it. The other pack probably knows where you live by now and are probably telling every other wolf pack in the country where you are right now.' She said nudging softly.
'Okay, okay I get your point.' I rolled my eyes. 'So where will I stay?'
'With us.' I turned round surprised that I hadn't even here the woman who I presumed was the boys and Solange's mother. 'Sorry, if I startled you. I'm Helena, Liam's wife.' She smiled warmly and I stood up.
'Are you sure? I really don't want to intrude considering the death glare I was getting from one of your sons.' I scuffed my shoe on the floor not sure where to look.
'Ah yes. Duncan.' She sighed. 'He hasn't exactly had the best experience with wolves so I apologise if he comes across hostile towards you.'
'No, it's okay. What happened to him?' I asked.
'It's not my place to say, he'll eventually come around but in the meantime don't take it too heart.' She said placing a hand on my shoulder.
