Chapter 2
(Leon's POV)
I woke up when I heard my phone buzzing, I opened my eyes and looked at the clock, it was already afternoon. I had an off today and most of the time I spent my off days sleeping. It was 3 days since Ada arrived and we were having a good time together. She decided to help us and David recruited her but since she had a history of working with the enemy that's why she was mostly kept out of the internal matters but it didn't seem to bother her and she never asked me about it either, maybe she was back for good. Every day we had lunch together and yesterday only we went on our first official date after which I straight away went to bed since I was really tired.
Ada wanted to move, very much opposite to my expectations, and I don't know what made me but I declined her offer of staying together for the time being. John lectured me about how I let a golden chance slip but I didn't care, I mean how well I know her? I know nothing about her, I thought it was better that we take time to know each other and do things properly like normal couples. It seemed she took things really fast but I felt it wasn't wise to jump both feet first and so that's why I wanted to take things slow for a change.
"Hello?", I answered my phone finally.
"Kennedy she's here, she's here!", I heard the voice of a very cheerful John.
"Who's here?", I asked groggily.
"Kat, Kat is finally been found", he told me and it made me sat up straight.
"What!? You're kidding right?", I asked not believing him, it seemed too early for another good news.
"No, she was apparently found by an old couple in a very bad condition and they weren't able to read or listen to the missing news that was being broadcasted, so they didn't know. Although they tried to seek help from the local police when they found her but the police wasn't really cooperative, so they decided to keep Kat till she got better. But then they heard the neighbors talking about the news that was published when Ada was found, so they just made a wild guess and it turned out that it was our Kat", he spoke very fast.
"Where is she?", I asked getting out of the bed.
"In Rebecca's care; just in case you know", John replied excited, "I am going to meet her, you should come too."
"Yeah I'd see you there in a bit", I said as I took out a pair of clothes to wear.
I hurriedly got ready and headed for the hospital and when I opened the front door, I found Ada standing there, "Hey", I said happily.
"Hi! I was just wondering… ", she began.
"Guess What?", I asked getting out and closing the door.
"What?", she asked puzzled as I dragged her to the car.
"They finally found Kathleen", I told her happily.
"What!?", she almost screamed and shook off my hand.
"What happened?", I asked her confused.
"I don't want to see her", she said plainly.
"Why?", I asked not getting the reason for the sudden hostility.
"Leon, have you developed feelings for her?", Ada asked looking really displeased.
"What!? No, no, you're getting all wrong, its just that she always used to know what's happening plus maybe she can tell us who tried to kidnap you two", I tried to explain it to her. I did like Kathleen but I didn't I like her as much as Ada. My feelings for Kathleen were a blur but my feelings for Ada were as clear as water. I just liked Kathleen possibly out of sympathy but I loved Ada even without a reason.
"I am not going", she said crossing her arms.
"Oh c'mon it can't be that bad", I tried to persuade her.
"No, I won't go. What if the person who tried to kidnap us planted her with virus and she carries virus and all", she said and the lines of fear ran across her face.
"Don't worry; Becky is checking her for the virus. We won't be allowed to meet her until Becky gives her a green signal", I said and after too much persuasion she agreed to go with me.
I parked my car in the hospital parking and turned to look at Ada. She seemed really displeased about the situation as if she was obligated to be here. I even offered her to stay back at my home and wait for me while I checked out this thing but she didn't agree to that option either, so now we were here walking to Kathleen's room sharing the silence between us. I couldn't help but sigh looking ahead when I spotted Rebecca. I yelled out to her and she turned to look back and I hurried to her.
"How is she?", I asked a little concerned as I caught up to her, "Is she okay? Is infected or anything?"
"No…. Yes…. I mean yes she's okay and no she don't seem to carry a virus or anything", she answered with a smile, "We didn't find anything abnormal in her metabolism", she added as we started to walk.
"Heard that she's okay", I said to Ada trying to ease up her tension.
"It doesn't matter, maybe the symptoms doesn't show that quickly", Ada said and for a moment I wondered if she wasn't happy about the idea that Kathleen was okay.
"The old couple said that they have her for over a week now", Rebecca snapped hearing her comment, "She's perfectly fine; however…", she sighed in disappointment.
"However what?", I asked pushing the door open to the room.
"Hey its Leon, we've been waiting for you", John yelled seeing us enter. He was sitting by Kathleen's bed and she was sitting on the bed wearing hospital clothes and looked perfectly fine and it made me happy, "Kathleen meet your husband Leon Scott Kennedy", John said smiling ear to ear and Claire was by her bedside too and they both broke out laughing.
'What!?', I thought not getting their stupid joke, plus I didn't understand why didn't Kathleen quip back or anything. I looked at Ada and she was boiling in anger and she shot me an angry look and then I looked back at Kathleen, she was looking more of examining me from head to toe.
"She lost her memory", Rebecca completed her previously left sentence.
"What!?", I almost screamed in astonishment.
"A case of partial amnesia", Rebecca said moving by her side and just then the door opened and David entered.
"Ah… so it seems that Leon is here. We have done all the formalities here and your husband i.e. Leon here will take you home right away", David said to Kathleen and Claire's and John's fits of laughter doubled.
"David, you too", I couldn't but say, extremely shocked that he was joining John's stupid joke.
"I'd explain the situation to you, Kennedy", he spoke urgently in a lowered tone, so that only I could hear it.
"I am leaving!", Ada said grabbing my attention and stormed out. I followed her like always, as David called out my name.
"Ada wait!", I called out to her and for the first time she turned to look back at me. She seemed really furious and maybe hurt, "You know it's a lie."
"Yes, it's a lie but none the less we have to say this", David said in a serious tone, joining us.
"What?! But why?", I asked not hiding the surprise in my voice.
"It's because she's suffering from amnesia, and have absolute zero memory of her past", Rebecca told me.
"Why the husband act?", I asked for an explanation.
"Because somebody has to take care of her and make sure the attackers don't get to her. Ms. Wong can take care of herself, since she's capable of fighting but that girl inside, who is on the bed, haven't heard the names t-virus or g-virus. She's completely different from what we used to know", David explained.
"Maybe she's faking it", I said remembering, she had done something like this before.
"Why would she come here and fake of amnesia?", Claire said as she and John joined us as well, "She's here because she wanted to meet her family, her mother, father or siblings", she added being deductive about it.
"Why me and that too her husband", I asked helplessly.
"It's because other agents are either female or have wives and if you are thinking why not John then it's because he's too careless and I cannot be her husband can I?", David said sternly.
"It's only a matter of small time, till she regains her memory or we find out who is behind all this", John said casually.
"But why husband, he could be her brother or any other relative", Ada snapped in anger.
"It's because what little of her memory she retains she tells that she had no siblings, her father was a scientist and her mother was a housewife and she is not lying", Rebecca answered.
"And Leon can't be her father", John said in a matter-of-fact tone, "And he definitely can't be her mother."
"So therefore, we had to resort to husband, since she won't agree to stay with anyone else", Claire said in conclusion.
"Urgh… do what you want I am just leaving", Ada flared and stormed off again. I followed calling her name and I grabbed hold of her hand.
"Hey, relax I have to just pretend plus we can continue our relationship", I said caressing her cheek.
"How're we supposed to work on our relationship when that bitch is around", Ada yelled furiously.
"We'll figure out something", I said pulling her in a hug.
"What?", she said very softly.
"I don't know but you do know it's my job and now its your job too, you promised to help right", I said and she nodded, "Now give me a smile", I said pulling away from the hug and she smiled weakly. Once she calmed down she decided to leave and I stood there watching her for a bit.
"Are you done because your wife is waiting", John reminded me and I felt a little irked to hear that.
"She's not my wife", I said monotonously not hiding the annoyance in my voice.
"Hey don't blame me, I asked David if I could replace you but he said that you were more responsible and all that crap. I fought for this position and I lost", he said sounding disappointed.
"I don't want to hear it", I said really uninterested in his childish tales of valor.
"No really, I would be really glad to replace you; you just have to get David agreed to it", he said seriously.
"Stop joking", I said being serious about the situation.
"I am not joking", he said, "Look at me do I look like I am joking?", I glared at him and he stopped uttering non-sense because everyone knew that John can, never in his life, be serious about anything. I pushed open the door and Claire looked at me and then at John and they again broke into fits of laughter.
"Well John let's leave them alone", Claire said getting up and they both exited through the door leaving me alone with Kathleen.
I sighed and walked to Kathleen's bedside and sat where Claire was sitting earlier, "Don't you remember anything?", I asked and she shook her head and I slapped my head.
"You don't seem happy to see me here, are you sure you're my husband?", she asked very doubtfully.
"Yeah, I am your husband", I said trying to sound convincing.
"You didn't try to kill me or anything because of that woman did you?", she asked suspiciously.
"What!? No, what gives you that idea?", I asked a little bewildered at her question
"Maybe that you ran after another woman and then you don't look happy as if you are forced into this relationship", she said trying hard to read me.
"Look", I said grabbing her hand and kissing it just to convince her, "I was stressed a bit okay; I am sorry but I am really very happy to see you", I was, I really was happy to see her; it was just that this husband thing was making me go nuts a bit.
"Okay I am convinced", she said smiling, it was her true smile which I saw when we went on an unofficial date that day, "I have to ask some really very important and extremely personal questions, so don't laugh alright?"
"Okay ask", I said nodding my head.
"How long we've been married?", she asked.
"Uh…", I wasn't expecting this, "uh… 2-3 years", I replied with the first numbers that came in my mind.
"2 years?! I thought it won't be more that 3-4 months anyways looks like I maintained myself a lot. Okay forget that do we have kids?", she asked seriously.
"No, no, absolutely no; we don't have any kids", I said shaking my head wildly.
"Thank god I am relieved! I was dreading it, since if I don't remember them it would be bad but then they wouldn't be that big enough, well who cares I don't have any", she said shrugging and I never thought that she could think like that, "So do I go to work or slack at home?"
"Yes, I mean no you don't go to work", I replied I was having a hard time answering her questions.
"Why are you taking so much time?", she eyed me doubtfully, "you know I was convinced but now I doubt your intentions. I don't believe that you are my husband", she said shaking my hand off her hand, "I won't go with him", she said to Rebecca who just entered.
"Leon", Rebecca warned me of worsening situation.
"Believe me I am your husband", I said I knew if I am not able to convince her now then I would be in real trouble.
"Prove it", she said crossing her arms.
"How?", I asked her looking at Rebecca, who seemed to be as clueless as me.
"Umm… let's see tell me something that only a husband would know", she said thinking a bit, "Something specific."
'I am doomed how am I supposed to tell something that I don't know', I thought and it felt like a Déjà vu since I've been asked this very question before but the excuse which I used last time won't work again.
"See I knew you're not my husband", Kathleen said when I couldn't come up with a reply, "I knew it you were faking it."
"No I am not", I tried to convince her again.
"So you're telling me that we're married for about 2-3 years and never had sex or anything. Tell me did we kiss or not, or maybe we haven't even hugged yet", she said in a tone of disbelief and I found myself losing the situation. I didn't knew what to do as she jumped from one conclusion to another and then I don't know what happened or what made me but I pulled her close and hugged her tight for a few minutes. And as I hugged her I noticed a spot on her back, a really small one I thought about giving it a try.
"There's a really small spot right about here", I said and touched her and felt her smooth skin and then I wanted to feel more… wait, wait, wait what am I thinking, I love Ada.
"So you really are my husband", she said pulling away from the hug, "What's your name again, I am Kathleen. Oh, but you already know that I am the one who lost her memory and didn't even remember my name until our friends told me."
"Leon", I told her my name.
"Okay Leon so what do you call me for short, you do know Kathleen is a long name?", she asked smiling.
"Uh… Kate?", I more of suggested than answered, I would have called her Kat but seeing the situation and person right now, Kat wouldn't suit her that much.
"Why don't you drop The Uh and just call me Kate", she said joking a bit and I smiled, "I am not joking seriously it sounds stupid", she said in a more serious tone and I realized that she wasn't joking in the first place either.
'Is she that dumb? Did she hit her head somewhere? Yeah, that's possibly seems to be the case much like those shows on TV', I thought, 'But hey she can't be worse than Ashley, Can she?'
I was in the middle of thinking all this when Rebecca cleared her throat and handed a couple of clothes to Kate, "Here are your clothes, you are free to leave now", Rebecca said smiling.
"Thanks doctor", Kate said taking her clothes from Rebecca.
"You get changed while I'd have a word with your husband", Rebecca said to her, gesturing me to follow her.
I rose from my seat and we both walked outside, "What's up Becky?", I asked once were in the hallway.
"David asked me to tell you that you have to stay with Kate all the time. He arranged so that you can work from home, if need be", she informed me
"But I thought…", I began feeling a little deceived for some reason. I couldn't help but think about the damage it would cause to Ada and my relationship.
"Look if you want to risk her kidnap you can do as you like", she said in a matter-of-fact tone, "This time she got lucky maybe she won't be that fortunate next time."
"Okay I get it", I said sighing in defeat.
"And as a Medic I like to suggest that keep her happy; make sure that doesn't stresses herself too much about the past events and don't try to make her remember anything. She might not be able to handle that stress and slip back to coma, like I told you that time. It was an induced coma then because anti-virus was working but this time she was in an actual coma, so if she relapsed to one again then she might not recover", Rebecca explained her medical condition to me.
"Hmm…", I was only able to nod in agreement taking everything in detail.
"One morething", she said and I looked up at her questioningly. She gave me a playful smile, "Have fun with her but don't hurt her", and with that she headed her way.
'What's with them I am no playboy, I won't go exploiting an amnesiac woman just because she thinks I am her husband', I thought opening the room door and the first thing I saw was Kate's back as she was zipping up her dress. She looked back at the sound of door opening.
"Oh it's you", Kate said sounding a little startled, "I thought somebody was seeing me dressing up", she added adjusted her dress a bit.
"I didn't mean to…", I began my apology for walking in on her.
"Oh it's no problem you're my husband", she said casually cutting me in between, "Yes it's a bit strange but I'll get used to it soon, I promise", she said determined, "But anyways shall we get going?"
"Uh.. Yes", I said giving her a nod.
I led her through the hospital corridors and to the parking. We walked side by side and she didn't say much but multiple times I caught her just looking at me, as if she wanted to ask me something and when I asked about it she just shook her head and looked away, avoiding eye contact. She was very different from her old persona
"Is this your… I mean our car", Kate asked seeing my car sounding really impressed and I couldn't help but smile at her innocence.
"Yes", I replied and electronically unlocked the car and we got in.
"Great at least you have money", she said happily, checking out the interior of my car.
"I have loads of money", I told her starting up the engine with a smile.
"And you let me spend according to my wishes", she asked me hopefully.
I didn't really know how to answer that question, since saying yes might cause trouble later but the way she was looking at me I just couldn't say no and gave her nod of agreement, which made her really happy. All through the drive she kept me asking various stuff about our inexistent married life and I tried to answer it like a good, if not ideal, husband.
