Chapter 12
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on. –Franklin D. Roosevelt
The smell of smoke has me recoiling as I snap my head around for the source of the smell. I'm pleased to find it's only a candle in the corner that the wind blew out. That eases some of the tension in my shoulders as I slump further to the floor making the chains around my wrists tighten. As of right now, I'm alone in the room for the first time in days. Anya called the witches outside to have a meeting meaning today is the day. I don't know what they have planned, but I can only assume it will involve me going out in public. I cast a quick glance down at my torn clothing and bloody body in distaste. I can only image what my hair looks like and I'm pretty sure the odor in the room is coming from yours truly. I can't imagine why I'm single.
"You're awake." I look towards the door to find Meredith smiling hesitantly at me. I sigh as I stand a little straighter.
"I know it must be your lucky day," I smirk cockily noticing the dress in her hands. It's more of a ball gown really that looks much too big for her small frame. "That's a pretty dress." I say finally making eye contact with her.
"Thank you…"She chews her lip in thought as she stares down at the garment.
"Something on your mind little witch?" I ask tilting my head to the side watching her closely. Innocence radiates off the girl as she shuffles from one foot to the other. It makes me wonder again how she ended up here with these twats. "Hmm?" I coax finally breaking her out of her thoughts as she sends a quick glance behind her before walking to me.
"I'm not supposed to be telling you this, but maybe it will help you." She whispers leaning in so we won't be overheard. "Tonight the Original family is hosting a ball and-"
"Wait the Original family?" I ask completely caught off guard with what she is telling me. Last time I checked Mikael was hot on Klaus's trail while Rebekah was MIA. Just how much did I miss?
"Yes, it seems Klaus has awakened his family and they are introducing themselves back in to society tonight." Meredith breathes casting another fearful look over her shoulder. "All the witches will be in attendance including myself." She takes a shaky breath as my eyes soften.
"Hey it's going to be okay." I smile reassuringly down at her as she nods. "But what does any of this have to do with me?" I ask not sure where I would fit into any of this.
"That's the thing," Meredith says, "Anya isn't one to keep quiet. She'll want to make a spectacle of you, in her eyes; it will be a grand gesture to Ester." I shake my head processing her words.
"Who is Ester? And what could she possibly want with me?" I ask growling to myself for not having all the facts. I watch as Meredith looks down at her shoes before meeting my gaze in fear.
"Ester is the Original witch and as for what she wants with you. I don't know. I only know that whatever Anya has planned it will not be good for you." Meredith whispers taking a step back as we hear footsteps approaching.
"Thank you Meredith. I promise I won't let anything happen to you tonight." I smile genuinely as she bites her lip and nods.
"Well don't you look like hell this morning!" Anya exclaims strolling into the room with a smile on her face. I look down at myself again in confusion.
"I'm sorry do I have a mirror on my face or something?" I smirk watching a forced laugh rack her body.
"Try all you want to get under my skin monster, but today is going to be a good day." She sighs, her eyes lit up in excitement.
"Why's that?" I ask bored as I roll my neck only to wince in pain. Annie's blood is out of my system so my wounds are refusing to heal again meaning it's going to be a hard next couple days.
"Because tonight is the beginning of the end," she cackles going over to her happy corner and picking up a poker. I stare at it warily wondering where she plans to stick me today, but she surprises me as she puts it down. "Oh I need you to be able to walk so we are going to give you the day to rest up." Anya explains when she notices my curious gaze. I raise an eyebrow at her statement. "Don't get used to it. We have something much better planned." She grins as she heads for the door. "Oh and something to think about before I leave." She turns around at the door, "Klaus, you know the one that is so infatuated with you, is taking Caroline to the ball tonight. It looks like he forgot about you after all." I can hear her cackles even after she disappears from my sight. I sit in silence as I think about what she just said. I think it's time I start to re-evaluate my time in Mystic Falls.
Rebekah POV
I sigh as I watch the woman doing my nails in concentration. I want them to be perfect for the ball tonight so I can't have some wench messing them up. I have to say I was just as shocked as the rest of my siblings to learn that our mother was alive. But I can't say I'm not happy to have her back, I've missed her.
"Rebekah, tell me how handsome I am." Kol smirks as he looks in the mirror adjusting his suit jacket. I roll my eyes at how vain Kol can be, out of all of us he is the most unpredictable.
"Ah Kol, you know I can't be compelled." I smile catching Finn's grin out of the corner of my eye. It's then that the door suddenly bangs open followed by a very pissed off Klaus, but what's new?
"You went after Elena?" What is wrong with you!?" Klaus yells referring to my attack on the doppelgänger that morning. If only Elijah hadn't stopped me, she would be six feet under in a lake somewhere.
"Here we go." I smile crossing my arms as I wait for Klaus to continue. It is never hard to get under his skin.
"Do you want another dagger in your heart?" He threatens making me scoff silently to myself. That's an empty threat now with mother back in the picture.
"Again with the dagger threats? Don't you have any other tricks?" Kol asks turning around to face our older brother. Out of all the siblings, Klaus and Kol butt heads the most. The two couldn't be more opposites and I know it gives Kol a certain kind of pleasure to piss Klaus off.
"Oh, go back to staring at yourself." Klaus throws over his shoulder as he focuses his attention back on me.
"And who are you, my father?" Kol taunts knowing exactly which buttons to push. I sink further into the couch as I watch the show.
"No Kol, but you're in my house." Klaus sneers earning a smirk from Kol.
"Then perhaps we should go outside." Kol suggests his face becoming serious as the two have a stare down. I have to say Klaus beats Kol in strength, but I wouldn't underestimate Kol. You just never know with him.
"Enough!" I look over as mother enters the room. "Niklaus…come." She orders as I watch the pair retreat into the back room.
"Must you push his buttons Kol?" Elijah, always the peace maker, asks exasperated.
"I spent over six hundred years in a box dear brother; I have lost time to make up for." He grins turning around to look in the mirror. I snicker to myself as he winks at me.
"Ms. Rebekah?" I turn my head to the maid that now stands in the doorway. "There is someone here to see you. Shall I send her back?" I draw my eyebrows together in confusion as to who could be here for me.
"Yes." I say watching the woman disappear only to return with Danny following her.
"Danny?" I ask standing to my feet as a wide grin splits the young girl's face.
"Bekah! You're back!" She smiles walking over and enveloping me in a hug. I don't hesitate to return it considering Danny and I grew close before that wench stabbed me in the back. I hear someone clear their throat as Danny and I step apart. I watch her look behind me as I follow her gaze to my three brothers who are openly staring at us. "Yes?" I ask rather annoyed.
"Aren't you going to introduce us Rebekah?" Kol smirks looking at Danny with amusement. I narrow my eyes at him as I nod.
"Yes, Danny let me introduce you." I walk her over to the group as I start to go down the line. "This is Elijah, the noble brother." I say watching as the two shake hands.
"Pleasure to meet you Danny," Elijah smiles warmly as Danny returns it.
"This is Finn, the oldest of us." I hide my snicker when Finn bows at the waist; however, Danny is quick to return it with a courtesy. I watch him nod in appreciation as the rest of us cover our surprise. "And last, but not least, Kol. The troublemaker." I smirk as he sends me a devilish smile before taking Danny's hand in his.
"Nice to meet you Danny," he grins, a hint of mischief in his eyes, as he kisses her hand. I nudge Danny's shoulder playfully when she looks down, her face turning tomato red.
"Well if it isn't the littlest Martinez." I roll my eyes as we look to find Klaus leaning against the wall. The only one that seems thrilled to see him is Danny as she runs over to hug him. I look to the rest of my brothers as they send me matching looks of shock and curiosity.
"Later." I mouth returning to my position on the couch.
"Not that I'm not happy to see you love, but what are you doing here?" Klaus asks releasing Danny so he can see her better.
"Well I wanted to know if you've heard anything from Alba?" Danny asks drawing my attention instantly.
"Where's Alba?" I ask smacking myself for not having thought of her earlier. For some reason, this sends a pang of shame through me.
"You mean she hasn't returned home yet?" Klaus questions the undeniable glimmer of rage in his eyes.
"No! How long does it take to help a pack of wolves?" She asks starting to pace the room. I've never seen Danny in such a state before. I look to Klaus over her shoulder as he sends me a look. I've seen that look countless times. He's about to reveal something big.
"And just who is Alba?" Kol asks intrigued as he watches Danny pace. I don't like the way he is looking at her.
"She's my older sister." Danny mutters as she goes back to her thoughts.
"Ooo older sister." Kol smirks already forming ideas in his head as Klaus gives him a death glare.
"I wouldn't even try it Kol. She's out of your league." I grin when Kol looks at me offended.
"No one is out of my league sister." Kol answers haughtily making me chuckle. Alba will eat him alive.
"Danny, love," Klaus says catching Danny by the shoulders so he can look at her. "Alba isn't in the mountains helping werewolves. Stefan took Alba the night of the homecoming dance."
"WHAT!" Danny and I yell at the same time as I jump to my feet. I don't bother looking around the room to notice Elijah and Finn's flabbergasted stares or Kols amused one.
"Where the hell is she, Klaus?" I bark fuming as to why Stefan would take her.
"If I knew that Rebekah I would have went and got her by now." Klaus bites before turning his attention back to Danny.
"Why would Stefan take Alba? I thought he liked her?" Danny asks.
"It was to get back at me. I'm so sorry love. I thought he would have returned her by now." Klaus feigns sadness, we all can tell. I can't believe he hasn't tried more to get her back. Oh wait I can believe it. Klaus doesn't care for anyone but himself.
"I think I should go." Danny mumbles as she tears away from Klaus and runs out the door. I can hear her light sobs as I turn to him.
"Real nice brother, not only did you succeed in making an innocent girl cry. You also failed at finding the one person that actually treated you like a human being. Well done." I snap running after Danny. I catch her before she hits the door. "Danny, wait." I say grabbing her arm to keep her in place. "I'm sorry you had to find out that way. But we will find Alba, okay?" I ask wiping away the tears streaking down her face.
"What if something happened to her?" Danny cries trying to cover her face with her hands, but I'm quick to grab them in mine.
"Now Danielle Martinez, I know for a fact that if Alba saw you like this she would be kicking someone's ass, am I right?" I ask actually going somewhere with this. I see a ghost of a smile cross Danny's face as she nods. "That's right so should I kick Stefan's ass or do you want me to get my brothers to do it?" I smile when she starts to laugh softly. "Or we could make it a family thing and just pummel him until he gives her back?" I try hoping that she says yes so I can tear that spineless tool to shreds.
"No, I think I need to talk to him." Danny surprises me by saying.
"Are you sure?" I ask not sure if I like her being alone with Stefan in this state.
"Yeah I am. But I just have to find the right time to go is all." She shrugs wiping away her tears.
"Well if you don't have any prior engagements tonight, my family is having a dance and we would be honored if you would attend. I know Stefan will be here." With his little doppelgänger bitch I add to myself.
"Thank you Rebekah, but I don't have a dress." Danny sniffles, "but it is kind of you to offer." I scoff as I grab her hand and lead her up the stairs.
"Nonsense! You are going and there is nothing you can do about it." I say matter of fact as I give her a genuine smile. "We will find you something to wear and you will be the bell of the ball. I'm sure of it." I catch her smile out of the corner of my eye as I set her down on my bed. I walk to my closet as I start flipping through dresses.
"Hey Rebekah?" Danny asks from behind me.
"Hmm?" I hum not expecting the next four words that come out of her mouth.
"How old is Kol?" I close my eyes and shake my head. Alba is going to kill me.
Gilbert House
Damon, Stefan, and Elena stand around the living room talking about the invitation Elena just received with Ester's note on the back.
"If Ester wants to talk to me, maybe I should find out why?" Elena proposes looking between the brothers and thinking things over.
"Well that's a dumb idea; she already tried to kill you once." Damon points out rather rudely.
"No, Elena is right." Stefan pipes up receiving a grateful nod from Elena. "Bonnie was led to open that coffin for a reason. I think there is more to this than just some family reunion."
"Can we go back in time to where the Old Stefan cared if Elena lived or died?" Damon asks annoyed as he looks to a smug Stefan.
"What for? It's your job now." Stefan smirks not aware of the hurt that flashes in Elena's eyes.
"Stefan has a point, Damon. I should find out what she wants." Elena agrees moving closer to the brothers.
"You can't protect yourself." Damon scowls thinking of all the ways this plan can go wrong.
"Okay fine, then I'll go." Stefan suggests surprising Elena and infuriating Damon.
"You've pissed off enough originals to last a lifetime. I'll go." He deadpans snatching the invitation out of Elena's hand as she yells in protest. "End of story. Now Stefan can I talk to you outside." Damon not so much as asks but demands. Stefan sighs but follows nonetheless. He barely has time to close the front door before Damon is throwing him against the wall.
"Alright Stefan I think it's time to quit playing games and give Alba up." Damon declares squeezing his hand tighter around Stefan's throat.
"I can't," Stefan gasps as Damon narrows his eyes lifting Stefan in the air.
"What do you mean you can't? Stefan what did you do?" Damon demands to know as he looks his baby brother in the eyes.
"The witches took her. I don't know where she is." Stefan chokes out as Damon's face drops. This cannot be happening.
"How long Stefan?" Damon finally asks no words to describe the anger he is feeling. Stefan doesn't answer as he looks to the ground having the decency to look distressed. "How. Long!" Damon roars smashing Stefan's head against the siding with each word.
"What the hell, Damon!?" Elena screams as she runs out the door to find them. Damon doesn't listen as his attention is focused on Stefan.
"About a week," Stefan breaths out trying to pry Damon's hand off his throat.
"Damon let Stefan go." Elena commands inching forward to gently place her hand over Damon's. Damon finally breaks his heated gaze with Stefan to acknowledge Elena.
"Alright Elena," Damon gives in setting Stefan on his feet as he straightens Stefan's jacket. "But there's one more thing I need to do," he says before using his vampire speed to knee Stefan in the stomach then in the face.
"Damon!" Elena yells as she looks around to make sure no one saw them.
"Listen here Stefan," Damon says bending down to get in his face, "if anything happens to Alba. I will not hesitate to rip your heart out; that I can promise." With that, Damon stands and walks off the porch to his car.
"What was that about?" Elena asks in confusion as she tries to help Stefan up. But he brushes her off as he too leaves. He replays the promise Damon made to him and for the first time in centuries, Stefan believes him.
Danny's POV
I hang back as I watch more people shuffle through the door. Everyone is dressed in their best ball gowns and most expensive jewelry. I slide deeper into my corner as I try to remain unseen. I wish Alba was here, she would know what to do.
"Danny there you are!" I quickly snap my head to Rebekah who looks gorgeous in a fitted emerald-green dress. She looks nothing like the rest of these girls; she looks out of this world. "What are you doing hiding back here? You need to be out in the open where everyone can see how beautiful you look." Bekah grins dragging me to a group of people in the center of the room. I quickly recognize the blond boy from the Grill as Matt Donovan. I've heard Caroline speak of him a few times. "Hello Matt, you look handsome tonight." Rebekah smiles as I watch their exchange in silence.
"Thanks!" He gives her a boyish grin that instantly makes me like him. "You look amazing Rebekah." He compliments her and I giggle quietly when she looks down embarrassed. I quickly nudge her hip with mine in retaliation for earlier with Kol.
"Thank you and have you met Danny?" Bekah asks pushing me forward so I'm front and center.
"No I haven't but I've heard a lot about you. Caroline considers you her little protégé." Matt laughs taking my hand in his as we shake. "And you look very beautiful tonight as well Danny." Matt praises causing a slight blush to rise to my cheeks as I look anywhere but at him. I let my eyes trail the room as Matt and Bekah talk and I'm surprised to find a pair of deep brown ones trained on me. I blush instantly when I notice Kol across the room watching me with a hidden smile turning up his lips. He's talking to a blond that has her back to me, but he looks bored with her.
"Danny?" I startle whipping around to acknowledge Rebekah. She's watching me with curious eyes as she looks between Kol and me. "Are you hungry? There's food right over there." She says pointing to a table in the corner set up with an elaborate selection of goods. I quickly shake my head as I spot Caroline entering through the double doors.
"Actually Beks, I'm going to go see Caroline. I'll find you when I'm done?" I ask watching her nod curtly as she turns back to Matt. I know Rebekah isn't exactly fond of Caroline, but I appreciate her toning it down around me.
"Caroline!" I yell catching her attention. She smiles wide and holds out her arms for a hug when she notices it's me.
"Danny! I'm so happy to see you, for a moment there I thought it was Klaus." She mutters bitterly before hiding her dismay. "You look awesome Danny!" She squeals fluffing out the bottom of my dress. I look down at the white material in adoration as I run my hands fondly over the jewels incrusted into the top. Luckily for me, Rebekah managed to find a dress that she says was made for me. It's a pure white strapless gown with tiny jewels covering the corset before it poofs out at my waist.
"Thank you Care, but I think you look much prettier." I say meaning every word as I look over her dark blue dress in awe. "It must have cost you a fortune." I acknowledge wondering how everyone managed to find a dress on such short notice.
"Hmm," she hums reaching up to adjust her hair. Instinctively, I do the same as I remember how hard it was for Rebekah to do without pulling even more of it out. It brings a frown to my lips that I'm quick to turn into a smile.
"Did you come with anyone?" I ask brightly looking around for her date.
"No I didn't," she answers too quickly making me scrunch my eyebrows together in confusion. I watch her mirror my movements as she looks at something over my shoulder. "Do they know this isn't a masquerade party?" She bites crossing her arms giving me enough time to turn around and see what she's talking about. A hush falls over the room as everyone stops to stare at the new additions to the ball. They look the same as everyone else, dressed in their ball gowns and jewelry, the only difference is they have masks obscuring their faces.
"Wow," I breathe watching as the women part to reveal one in particular.
"Who in the hell is that?" Caroline whispers almost threatened as she moves to stand beside me. I can't answer as I gawk at the girl in question. She is breath-taking as her black hair falls in gentle waves around her exposed shoulders. Her dress is a fiery orange that falls to just above the girl's knees in the front before lengthening in the back. Diamonds decorate the top of the girl's dress as the material falls elegantly around her toned legs. The area around her eyes is covered with a simple orange scroll cut masquerade mask that hides her identity. I shake my head as I scan the room to find everyone's eyes fixated on the girl as well. "Come on Danny." Caroline says breaking me out of my haze as we walk to Elena. She has a Salvatore on both arms as the three stare curiously at the masked women that are now moving around the room. "Okay so anyone want to venture as to who they are?" Caroline scowls as she watches them in disdain. I don't understand how she could hate them already.
"I don't know," Elena murmurs turning confused eyes on Caroline. "Maybe they are just here for the party?" She proposes as I lean a little closer to Stefan for privacy.
"Hey Stefan, can I talk to you?" I ask politely not expecting the frown he gives me.
"Not now." He states simply making me bite my lip. That was rude.
"No I agree with Blondie on this one," Damon speaks up earning a surprised look from Caroline. "Something doesn't feel right here." He glares as he tugs Elena closer to him. "Stay close to me." He commands. I catch the annoyed glare she sends his way, but I'm quick to excuse myself. I start my search for Rebekah, but I stop when I feel the hairs on the back of my neck rise. I twist around expecting to find Kol's brown eyes again, but I'm shocked to find the icy blue ones of the girl in the orange dress. She's encircled by the women she came with as she peers intently at me. Like she's willing me to see something I don't.
"Welcome, thank you for joining us." I tear my eyes from the girls as I focus on Elijah. He's standing on the staircase with the rest of his family as he gets the evening started. "You know, whenever my mother brings our family together like this, it's tradition for us to commence the evening with a dance." I look at the floor when he says this. I was never a good dancer.
"Pick your head up Danny," I jump as I hear a voice whisper in my ear. I turn expecting to find someone, but I find no one. Everyone is listening to Elijah.
"Tonight's pick is a centuries-old waltz, so if all of you could please find yourselves a partner, please join us in the ballroom." Elijah finishes as I quickly turn on my heel only to bump into a hard chest.
"Now where are you going, sweetheart?" I peek up at Kol who is smirking down at me.
"I'm not a good dancer." I squeak trying to move pass him, but he's not having any of that.
"Oh no you don't love," he smiles as he spins me around so fast I barely know what is happening until I'm standing next to him on the dance floor.
"Kol," I hiss looking around nervously as everyone lines up with their partner. "I really can't dance. You should find someone else." I suggest which earns me a chuckle from the youngest Mikealson.
"Darling, if I wanted to dance with someone else, I would be with them right now." He muses watching me in amusement as I blush furiously. "I love it when you blush. Just follow my lead." I nod as I follow his steps as we start the waltz. I bite my lip as I concentrate on keeping up with his movements. I smile when I don't step on his toes as we suddenly switch positions so I'm facing him. "Have I told you how ravishing you look tonight, love?" He smirks a twinkle in his eye as he adds, "white suits you."
"Thank you," I smile hesitantly as I quickly look him over. He looks cute in his tux and you can't even tell he's been in a box for over six hundred years. "You look very handsome."
"I know." He grins spinning me around as I giggle out loud. Maybe this night wouldn't be so bad.
3rd POV
Elijah moves with precise and graceful motions as he spins his dance partner around the floor. He always loved this waltz the best. It reminds him of the old days when his family was united as one and happy. Now they can barely be in a room together for more than two minutes before a fight breaks out. Elijah sighs as he spins his partner into the next man's arms as new hands take his own. He becomes speechless when he finds the girl everyone has been whispering about all night. He must admit he sees why, the girl is beautiful even with the mask covering part of her face.
"You must be the girl I've been hearing so much about," Elijah tries to make conversation as he spins her in a circle. He almost gasps as her dress flares out around her creating the illusion she's on fire.
"That would be me." She says her tone less than thrilled. "And you must be the oldest brother, Elijah I presume." She sighs surprising Elijah.
"That I am. Have you heard of me?" He questions suspiciously looking into the girl's blue eyes. If he has learned one thing being in Mystic Falls, it's to never underestimate anyone.
"Well, you have been a popular subject of discussion among the cougars in the room." She smirks baring a shocking resemblance to Damon Salvatore. Elijah quickly covers his astonishment with a laugh.
"Yes it seems I'm not the only one catching the people's eye tonight." He smiles looking down into the girl's face as a jolt of electricity spreads through him.
"So it seems," she mumbles frowning at something over his shoulder. He quickly spins them around so he can see what she's now glaring at. He's confused when he finds Kol spinning Danny in a circle as she laughs about something he just said.
"Not a fan of my brother?" Elijah asks looking at her heated gaze. He stifles a laugh at her obvious discomfort towards the two together.
"Not when he's dancing with her," she whispers to herself, but with Elijah's vampire hearing he manages to catch every word. He opens his mouth to question her further, but by then the song is ending and she is walking away before he can utter a word. He watches her leave, a ting of disappointment coursing through his veins, as he realizes he never caught her name.
Danny's POV
The wind sends a bitter chill down my spine as I stroll through the garden. It's beautiful tonight as lights dangle from the trees casting a magical glow over the flowers. I smile as I run my fingers over the soft petals of a white Lilly.
"You like Lilly's?" I jump yelping in surprise when Kol whispers in my ear. I whirl around to find him smirking rather amused as he watches me.
"Kol," I gasp trying to catch my breath, "I didn't hear you come up." I smile finally getting my heart rate under control. I watch as his eyes momentarily flicker to my neck before focusing back on me.
"Sorry, sweetheart, I didn't mean to scare you." He grins mischievously proving that he did, in fact, mean to scare me. "What are you doing out here by yourself? It's dangerous at night." He says a devious twinkle in his eye as he starts to walk around the garden. I don't follow him as he stays in my line of vision.
"Oh you know, waiting on my lover. I don't know what could be taking him so long." I shake my head in thought. However, I lose my cool as I start to giggle at the furious glare Kol sends my way. "I'm just kidding, Kol." I say watching his shoulders deflate as he chuckles lowly to himself.
"That wasn't very nice Danny." He muses, stopping in front of me. I stare up at him as he towers over my small frame making me second guess myself. I'm not a fool I know he's a vampire, a very powerful one at that, but there's something about him I want to figure out.
"I'm sorry," I frown sincerely looking down at the ground.
"Well you'll just have to make it up to me then." He answers quickly making me look at him in suspicion. I chew my lip as I consider what he could be thinking. From the playful glint in his eye and the tricky smile turning up his lips I can only guess what he is thinking.
"You don't want my blood, Kol." I answer seriously looking at the flowers over his shoulder as I refuse to meet his gaze.
"I don't want your blood Danny," Kol surprises me by saying.
"You don't?" I ask confused letting my eyes travel to his. His brown ones have turned almost black as he gazes down at me with an intense look in his eye. I don't know why but that disappoints me just the littlest bit. If I can't even get a vampire to bite me, how in the hell am I going to fall in love before I die? "Well fine I don't want your blood either." I tease earning me the classic Kol smirk. "Well how do I make it up to you then? You are a vampire, there's not much else you can want from me."
"Actually love there is," he says twisting around as I watch his back wondering what he can be doing. I try to lean around him to see what he's messing with, but he surprises me when he turns around suddenly revealing the Lilly I had looked at earlier. He's clipped it down so it has an inch of its stem left. "Consider this your payment," he says shocking me with the gentleness in his voice as he places the flower behind my ear. I know I look like a fish out of water as I gap at him. "Don't look so shocked, darling, I can be nice."
"Not from what Bekah has told me." I blurt before I can think about how rude that sounds. "Oh I'm sorry Kol," I begin before he holds up his hand shaking his head.
"No apologies necessary Ms. Martinez. I'm not a nice person…to most." He smirks holding out his elbow. "Now I believe we have dawdled too long, let's get inside and mingle." I grin as I take his elbow and walk inside with him. I'm not even all the way inside before someone is yanking me away from him. I manage to squeak out a protest as I'm being shoved behind the person's back.
"Ah Stefan! What's the problem mate?" Kol leers as he sends me a look over Stefan's shoulder.
"Stefan," I say putting my hand on his shoulder as I try to move past him, but he's quick to push me back.
"What were you doing out there?" Stefan asks nonchalantly as he peers into Kol's eyes.
"Getting a snack," Kol narrows his eyes as he squares off with Stefan. I hear the growl vibrate in Stefan's chest as I quickly look around for help. I spot Elijah close by talking to Elena.
"Elijah!" I yell waving him down like I'm trying to land a plane. He whispers quietly to Elena before hurrying over to me. He doesn't have to ask questions as he sees what has me calling him over.
"Kol remember where you are," Elijah threatens as he tries to calm his brother down. I don't know what compels me to do it, but as Elijah is talking to Kol I hesitantly slide my hand in Stefan's.
"We need to talk." I tell him as he glances down at our clasped hands. "Please?" I ask looking into his eyes before he finally nods in consent. I lead him away from Kol and Elijah as we find a room off to the side. Once inside I don't bother with the pleasantries. "You took Alba."
"Who told you?" He asks not sounding the least bit sorry.
"It doesn't matter, what matters is that you took her and I want her back." I say moving so I'm standing directly in front of him. "Please Stefan. I know you aren't feeling much these days and I know that you think the reason you took Alba was a good one, but it wasn't. She's done nothing to deserve this." I plead with him as he just stares back at me blankly. "Stefan…"
"I can't Danny." He finally speaks up casting his eyes down. I pucker my lips as I feel tears start to pool in my eyes.
"Why not?" I ask my hope at convincing Stefan slowly diminishing.
"It's complicated and you don't need to get involved." He says brushing past me towards the door, but I'm not leaving here without answers.
"No!" I yell surprising us both as I jump in front of him. "Not only did you take Alba when she was helping you keep your friends safe, you took her away from me! She is my only family Stefan! She is the Damon to my Stefan so we are not leaving until you tell me where she is!" I finish swaying on my feet as the room suddenly starts to spin. I feel Stefan grip my elbow gently as he leads me to the couch. "I didn't realize how much energy yelling took," I chuckle softly putting my head in my hands. I feel drained, the night's events catching up to me.
"Lay down," Stefan commands not bothering to acknowledge the words I yelled at him not thirty seconds earlier.
"Stefan…"I shake my head pushing his hand away, but he's persistent.
"You're tired Danny. You need to rest." He presses helping me lay down so my body sinks into the fluffy cushions. I sigh as I slowly begin to relax. I feel my eyes getting heavy as I try to remain awake.
"Stefan…Alba…"I hear myself mumble in my sleep haze, but it doesn't take long for the darkness to take me.
Damon's POV
It's not every day I'm played for a fool; especially by Elena and my baby brother. But it seems I drew the short stick this evening as I slink around the party looking for my doppelgänger. Not only did Elena do everything I told her not to, she also signed the help of Stefan to break my neck. To say I'm a little angry would be a lie. I'm furious. I clench my jaw when I finally spot Elena standing near the staircase.
"Elena. Did you get what you want?" I ask not the least bit curious because I know she did.
"Actually, yes," she breathes straightening her back as she looks at me. I can see the guilt in her eyes; like she's been caught stealing from the cookie jar.
"Good, tell me on the ride home. We're leaving." I smile without humor as I grab her arm and tug. "Come on."
"Uh no, Damon let go of me." She whines taking her arm back as she crosses them at her chest. "Look, I'm sorry that I had to cut you out of the plan."
"There shouldn't have been a plan." I growl moving forward so I tower over her. "You shouldn't be here." I look into her eyes as I think about what could have happened to her when I wasn't there.
"Do you think I like going behind your back?" She questions as I roll my eyes. Her puppy dog eyes are not going to get the best of me this time. I'm in the right here. "I don't. But if I hadn't asked Stefan to help, then you would've tried to be the hero, and it would've ruined everything." I flinch internally at her words, low blow Elena.
"Sorry for trying to keep you alive. Clearly Stefan doesn't give a crap anymore!" I snap feeling the undeniable sensation of hurt in my chest.
"Now you're mad at me for including Stefan?" She yells in agitation as more fury bubbles in me.
"No, I'm mad at you because I love you!" I blurt not dropping my hard exterior as I hang on to her every word.
"Well, maybe that's the problem." She whispers making me draw back in shock. I look at her speechless feeling the effects of her words as my earlier feelings seep into anger. "No. That's not what I-"she tries to apologize, but I won't be hearing any of that.
"No, I got it, Elena. I care too much. I'm a liability…how ironic is that?" I ask more to myself as thousands of thoughts race through my head. The main one being I care too much; when did I switch places with Stefan?
"Hey have you guys seen Matt?" Caroline asks walking over to us.
"Is he missing?" Elena asks worry evident in her voice. I gnash my teeth when she sends me a pleading look silently asking for my help. I smile with no emotion as I raise my hands in surrender.
"Sure let me go look for him. Maybe I can finally do something right tonight." I say walking off to search for the quarterback. I leisurely walk up the steps to the second floor secretly hoping Matt is dead.
"Aah!" I roll my eyes as I think about how I couldn't get that lucky. I walk to the doors just to my left to find Kol crushing Matt's hand in his.
"Easy on the hand," I grin when I get their attention, "guy's a quarterback." When I see Kol's amused smirk I lose it as I fly at him shoving him over the balcony's edge. I'm quick to follow him down as I land on top of him and give his neck a clean break. The snapping of bones has never sounded so sweet especially when they belong to the original family.
"Damon! Are you crazy?" I hear Stefan yell from behind me as I look over my shoulder to find him, Elena, and the originals in question watching me.
"Maybe a little," I shrug looking to Elena, "but far be it for me to cause a problem." I glare turning on my heel to make a break for it, but I'm stunned to find the masked women from earlier behind me. They stand in a large circle around the girl in the orange dress.
"Good, then stand there like a good little monster." One of the women coos as she reaches up to take off her mask. Instinctively, the rest follow as they go around the circle revealing their true faces. I don't know who any of them are, but from the light intake of breath behind me, Stefan must know them.
"What is this?" I hear Elijah demand to know as the main witch laughs loudly.
"This, my dear man, is the beginning." She grins wickedly turning around and walking to the center of the circle. I watch as she stops in front of the girl before giving her a sharp slap across the face. Then with a flick of her wrist, she has the girl's mask off revealing her true face. I gasp in shock, my heart clenching, when I meet the blue eyes of Alba.
3rd POV
No one moves or breathes as they look to Alba in the center of the circle. Elena, Stefan, and Damon are stunned into silence as Rebekah and Klaus instantly growl in rage.
"I suggest you give her back right now before I tear you limb from limb," Klaus smiles a threat in his eyes as he slowly starts to descend the steps.
"I don't think so hybrid," the witch spits as a glint of something sparks in her eyes. "Actually on second thought, do you want this version?" The witch asks holding her hands out like Vanna White, "or do you prefer this Alba?" She grins evilly as she chants a few words drawing a cloud of smoke to create a veil around Alba. Everyone holds their breaths as they wait for the smoke to lift and when it does Damon and Klaus are the first ones to react.
"Damon!"
"Klaus!" Stefan and Elijah yell at the same time watching their impulsive brothers charge the group of witches. However, they don't make it far, as both are sent flying back through the air as they hit a force field.
"Ah ah ah," the witch tics wagging her finger, "that's not how this is going to work boys." She laughs walking in slow circles around Alba who is standing strong as blood covers her dress and dirt smears her face. Not an inch of her skin is left untouched as she wobbles on her feet.
"What have you done to her?" Elena is the first to speak after the initial shock of seeing the real Alba.
"Oh, well, that may take a few days to answer because I've done a lot to her." The witch smirks as Klaus bangs on the force field in rage. It's then that a sickening cough escapes from Alba's throat as she hunches at the waist. When she stands, a steady stream of blood is pouring out of her nose and blood coats her hand from the cough.
"What do you want here?" Elijah, ever the level-headed one, speaks up.
"That's simple. I wish to speak with Ester." The witch demands walking back to her place as head of the circle.
"My mother will not come out here for reasons such as this," Finn states strongly making the witch twitch.
"Well, in that case, I think we have a way to persuade her. Charles do it." The witch yells never looking back as she stares into the eyes of Damon Salvatore. She watches in amusement as horror flashes in his eyes as the sound of a whip cracking followed by the shrill cry of Alba fills the night air.
Alba's POV
I fall to my knees in agony as white-hot lava slices through my back. I've never experienced anything quite this painful before and it leaves me weak beyond words. Another scream rips its way from my throat as the hits keep on coming.
"Stop! We'll get her!" I hear Rebekah scream as I slowly lift my head to find all the vampires crowded around the barrier trying to find a way in. The only ones not up front and center would be Finn and Elena as they hang back and Kol who is still down for the count.
"I want to see her now or we are going to keep using Alba as a whipping board." Anya yells not sounding the least bit afraid that when this is all said and done, she'll be dead. I have the urge to roll my eyes, but I can't seem to muster up the energy.
"I'm going to kill you and everyone you've ever met." I hear Klaus growl as I find him standing right at the barrier in front of Anya. He looks deadly as he gazes at her, but then when does he not look menacing?
"Promises, promises," I mutter drawing his attention to my own. The undeniable emotion of grief flashes in his eyes as we look at one another. I watch his eyes travel over my crippled form before fury starts to replace his sorrow.
"Charles." I bite my lip as the whip slashes another line across my back. I cringe as more pain racks my body.
"Aah!" I hear a few of them yell out as I try to remain conscious. It's hard as black spots dot my vision and I'm pretty sure if I pass out I won't be waking up.
"Anya! What are you doing?" I glance up warily as Stefan finally speaks up. He looks a mix of angry and afraid. Good.
"What you wanted me to Stefan," Anya answers sweetly, "I'm finding ways to kill the Original family." I close my eyes shut as I picture everyone's shocked faces trained on Stefan.
"Stefan you didn't." I catch Elena whisper, but I could care less about her. I lift my head once more to meet the brown eyes of Elijah. I remember our dance from earlier and if I didn't have a permanent frown, I might be tempted to smile. He looks at me with mixed emotions in his eyes and I mouth its okay. He just shakes his head in denial.
"You know Stefan; I find it very peculiar that now you are worried for Alba's safety. I mean you saw what I was doing to her from the beginning. What gave you a change of heart?" Anya grins sadistically as she gets Stefan in more trouble. I can't find it in me to care though.
"Let her go." I shift my gaze from Anya to Damon who is staring at me with so much guilt and sadness, I have to look away.
"Now why would I do that?" Anya asks walking over to me as she speculates her work. "Do you know how long I've been waiting for this moment? For her to come along? All I ever heard growing up was how a baby would be born; she would have immense strength and power beyond our wildest imagination. She would be our saving grace! Now imagine my disappointment when I get here and I find this abomination." Anya sneers kicking me in the side as another crack resounds through the air. Who needs ribs anyways? "She's a witch with vampire blood pumping through her veins; a Salvatore's blood no less." She grits bending down and grabbing a chunk of my hair. I gnash my teeth together as she rips my head back so I'm staring into her face. "You are and forever will be a disappointment." I clench my jaw as her words leave a stinging trail of emotions through my chest. "I mean you couldn't save your mother, Stefan abandoned you, Damon didn't want anything to do with you, Klaus forgot about you and Danny is good as dead. Who does that leave you with Alba? No one."
"What is the meaning of this!?" All eyes snap to the voice that has now commanded our attention. I'm surprised to find Ester walking down the steps as Klaus and Damon part to make room for her.
"Ester!" Anya exclaims dropping me so she can scurry over to the original witch. "It's a pleasure to meet you." The adoration in her voice has me gagging.
"Thank you. Now what is this?" Ester levels her gaze on Anya as power fills the air.
"Oh, let me show you." Anya hurries over to me as she drags me to my feet. I groan as more blood gushes from my wounds and the world starts to spin. "This girl is part vampire, part witch. She has all the perks of being a vampire and enough power to bring down a country. She's an abomination to our race, but she holds secrets far beyond her capacity. I think we can unlock these secrets ourselves, but I want your blessing. I want to know what you think we should do." Anya rushes out circling her hand tighter around my arm. I feel Ester's eyes on me as I look to the witch meeting her gaze.
"Bring her to me." Ester demands earning Anya's complete obedience as I stumble over my feet.
"Behave." Anya growls in my ear as she pushes me at Ester's feet. I land in a heap on the ground wincing in pain. "You don't need to be gentle with her. She deserves pain." This earns her growls of anger as warm hands cup my face.
"Look at me." I look up blankly into the original witches face. She is peering down at me in awe as she places our foreheads together momentarily. "Amazing," she says loud and clear as my head starts to get lighter.
"What is it Ester?" Anya is quick to ask looking expectantly between us.
"Nothing of your concern," Ester barks standing to her feet. "I think it's time for you to leave."
"What? But we just brought you the gift of a lifetime, we aren't giving her up." Anya yells tugging on my arm so I'm pushed back into the barrier away from Ester. I fall backwards, a sickening smack coming from where my head meets the ground. I lay still, my eyes closed, as I don't have the strength to move. I can vaguely hear arguing and yelling going on around me, but it soon fades to silence as I feel my body becoming lighter. I think I may be dying.
"Alba, sweetie, wake up," I snap my eyes open when I hear my mother's voice. I sit up rubbing the back of my head before I realize I feel no pain. I look down in confusion only to find no cuts, bruises, or holes marring my skin. I raise a questioning eyebrow as I crawl to my feet to find I'm still in front of the Michelson mansion, but it's deserted, not a soul in sight. "Alba?" I twist around when I hear her voice again. I find her looking at me with happy and sad filled eyes as a smile graces her lips.
"Mom? Where are we?" I ask, moving forward to close the gap between us, but her shrill cry as me stalling.
"Alba! Wait! Don't take another step, just stay on your side." She pleads looking down at my feet in worry. I follow her gaze to find a thin glowing line separating her from me.
"What the hell is that?" I ask tilting my head to the side taking a step back. The line splits the yard in half creating two sides.
"It's what is keeping you alive right now," my mom answers sadly. I raise an eyebrow as the line moves towards me an inch. I hear her sharp intake of breath as she rushes out, "Alba listen to me. Do you remember those bed time stories I would tell you? The ones about the earth and how only a select few can draw real power from it." I nod my head slowly thinking back to all those tales she would tell me of the people extracting the earth's energy. "Well they aren't just stories, Alba; you are one of those people. Haven't you noticed your power is strongest when you're outside? You thrive on the land, honey."
"Why are you telling me this?" I ask thinking over everything she is telling me. Of course, what she says is true.
"You have a real connection with nature Alba, use it. You'd be surprised at what it can offer you. Now go. You aren't meant to be here yet, there's still so much for you to do. I love you Alba and I am so proud of you." She smiles tears filling her eyes as I take an unconscious step forward.
"Alba?" The first thing I feel are hands skimming over my face followed by wetness crawling down my cheeks. "Alba, please wake up. Anya is going to kill me if you don't. You promised to take care of me." I recognize Meredith's terrified voice as I will myself to stand, but my wounds are keeping me pinned to the ground. I can't even open my eyes let alone fight. Alba feel the bond, you are stronger than this. I grit my teeth as my mother's voice rings in my ears. Here goes nothing. I concentrate on the wind as it rustles the leaves on the trees effectively blocking out the mess going on around me. I feel the grass beneath my fingers as I slowly breathe in the scent of the forest. I picture the animals in the forest as they run from the predator of the night. Finally, I dig my nails into the dirt as the undeniable pulse of the earth shoots through my veins. I suck in a much-needed breath as my eyes fly open at the sensation. I can feel the natural reaction my body has to the power, like it's been in me all along, but dormant. I sit up with ease running my eyes over my body. I stare in shock at the glow vibrating off my body, no wounds or cuts; everything is smooth skin and hard muscle.
"Oh my god," I lift my gaze at the startled voice to find Rebekah with wide eyes focused on me. I grin mischievously as I shoot to my feet reveling in the speed I just acquired. I look around the group in front of me as they all gawk at me in amazement. I lock eyes with Klaus as a slow smile creeps onto his face.
"Alba!" I whirl around at Meredith's scream to find her hunkered down as Charles brings the whip above his head. I growl in rage as he brings the whip down, but I'm snatching it out of the air before it has time to touch Meredith. I tsk at Charles angry face as he tries to yank the whip out of my hands.
"Charles," I shake my head giving the whip a hard tug as it flies from Charles hand and lands in mine. "Well I have to say that was much easier than I expected." I shrug as Charles now has the decency to look afraid as I take a step towards him.
"Please, don't kill me." He pleads stumbling backwards as I tap my chin.
"Now Charles, didn't anyone ever tell you, begging doesn't look good on a man." I smile cheekily as I crack the whip watching as it wraps around Charles throat. "Consider this, payment for earlier." With that, I pull the whip towards me, not even flinching, when I hear his neck snap. I drop the whip at my side at the exact moment Charles's body hits the ground.
"NO!" I turn around at Anya's agony filled howl. She's standing a few feet in front of me, her face contorted in hate.
"What's wrong Anya? I thought this is what you wanted!" I shout holding my hands towards the sky. "I'm unlocking the secrets of me, shouldn't you be taking notes?"
"Witches! Do it now!" Anya barks as all the witches drop their hands and start to chant.
"Ah, ah, ah," I reprimand throwing both of my hands in the air as every witch; including Anya is thrust towards the sky.
"Keep chanting!" Anya snaps looking down at me with a devilish grin. "It doesn't matter what you do, monster. We will always win." I smirk as I clench my hands closed ending the chanting going on around me. I raise any eyebrow in amusement as the witches start to choke and claw at their throats.
"I'm sorry I can't seem to hear you." I say enjoying the view of Anya's face turning beat red. "You know Anya I like you a lot better when you don't talk." I narrow my eyes as I feel the wind pick up around me as it whips my hair around my face. I can feel the power surging through me as I bring my fists down in a swift motion crashing them to the ground. It's like time stands still as every witch in the circle flies backwards their screams echoing in the night. I gaze into Anya's horrified face as she still hangs suspended in the air watching her fellow comrade's fall. Some of them fly out of sight, others land in a crippled heap on the ground, and one lands with a sickening crack on the windshield of a guest's car. "Send my apologies to the owner of that car." I say to Elijah, who is staring at me with a mix of curiosity and awe.
"You bitch!" Anya growls as she punches the air trying to get free of my grasp.
"Anya! I thought we were having so much fun!" I pout placing my hands behind my back. "I mean you got to rip me apart I figure it's only fair I do the same. Though I did think it would be a little more difficult than this." I shrug as another wail leaves Anya's mouth. "Enough with the yelling, it only makes me want to kill you faster, and I plan to draw your death out as slowly and painfully as possible." I feel a darkness I had no idea I possessed slowly start to wrap around my heart.
"Go to hell!" Anya spits making me smirk.
"Oh I've been there for about three months now," I say referring to my stay in Mystic Falls. "I came here for one thing and I manage to get shoved head first into their lives. Tell me Anya, did you know being tortured by you was a reprieve?" I begin walking around her in circles catching the hurt flash in Damon, Rebekah, and Klaus's eyes at my words. I stop to look at all of them as I continue. "Don't look so wounded guys; you did me a favor by leaving me to rot in that cell."
"I did everything I could to find you, love." Klaus steps forward speaking up first.
"I can see that," I motion to the party going on inside. "Tell me did you expect to find me serving you wine as you threw yourself at Caroline?" I ask chuckling when Klaus turns down his lips in anger.
"Alba…"Damon calls my name as I barely glance at him.
"No time to chat Salvatore, I have a witch to deal with." I resume my position in front of Anya as she glares down at me.
"Go ahead, kill me. There are more where I came from. The witches know you are here now, you will have nowhere to run." Anya seethes.
"That may be so." I ponder aloud as I think about everything I've been through and everything I've done. The darkness around my heart seems to tighten at the prospect of killing more witches.
"Don't think they will just come after you. They will chain you up and make you watch as they kill Danny." I slowly lift my head to stare at the witch as she smirks. "And there is nothing you can do about." She cackles.
"Oh, but Anya you forget so quickly!" I beam clenching my fist as she starts to choke fighting for air. "If anything happens to Danny, the witches will really get to see what a monster looks like." I step forward watching as real fear dances in the witch's eyes. "There will be nowhere in this world for the witches to hide because I will find them and I will kill every last one. You thought I was the beginning of something great? Well consider this your wakeup call Anya, because you're looking at the end." I finish throwing my hand towards the forest as Anya crashes into a tree splitting it in half. I look at her mangled body with little emotion.
"Well that was a party stopper if I've ever seen one." I sigh as I turn to find Kol awake a grin turning up his lips. "The name's Kol, darling, and you must be the famous Alba I've heard so much about." Kol walks towards me as everyone else just gaps. "I have to say I'm a little surprised to find someone so beautiful," he winks taking my hand and kissing it.
"That's cute," I smile patting his shoulder. "Now go try it on someone you actually have a shot with." I brush past him not missing the smile that he gives me. I walk to stand in front of the vampires well aware that I just made quite an impression. I turn to Ester first, frowning just the littlest bit as I come down from my high.
"I'm sorry for ruining your night. It wasn't my intention." I apologize as I turn to Rebekah. "I'm assuming you know where Danny is?" I continue as she nods, "will you please go get her for me?" I don't bother checking to make sure she is doing as I ask because I know she will do it for me. I turn my attention to Stefan as brief fear dances in his eyes. "Stefan."
"Alba." He states looking me in the eye boldly. I stare back at him my anger quickly dissipating as utter disappointment and sadness fill the hole he left. I know he can see it by the way he suddenly lurches forward. "Alba please-"I hold up my hand cutting him off.
"Do not apologize to me when you clearly don't mean it," I bite watching him halt on the steps. "You did me a favor actually Stefan, you made me realize that I am only here for Danny. She is all I have and all I need. So take what guilt you have over this and let it consume you. I could care less."
"ALBA!" I look at the door just in time to see Danny barreling down the steps towards me. "Oh my god!" She screams jumping into my arms as I pick her up off the ground. She wraps her arms tightly around my neck as sobs rack her body. I rub her back soothingly as I hug her just as tight. That's when it hits me like a freight train. Her pain washes over me making me clench my eyes shut as I breathe through it.
"Alba?" Rebekah tries moving towards me, but I take a step back.
"I'm fine." I snap gritting my teeth as another wave hits me. Damn it I need to get us home now. I keep Danny in my arms as I turn on my heel and start to walk home. I hear Rebekah calling my name, but I refuse to listen. I don't need their help and I sure as hell can take care of Danny and myself.
"Alba, I thought you were dead." Danny sniffles, her face still in the crook of my neck.
"What have I told you Danny? I will never leave you." I say walking down the deserted road. Fog hangs in the trees as I force what I just did from my mind. I can feel the darkness that moments earlier hugged my heart loosening. "Did I mention how pretty you looked tonight Danny?" I ask softly as she finally calms down.
"I thought you looked real pretty too." She chokes out after a minute of silence. I smile a real genuine smile for the first time in weeks.
"Not nearly as gorgeous as you, I mean I didn't have an Original following me around like a puppy." I tease feeling her body stiffen.
"Alba I know-"
"Danny relax. You aren't in trouble." I say setting her down on her feet. She doesn't waste time wrapping her arms around me as I do the same to her.
"I missed you so much." She tears up again as I wipe them away.
"I missed you more than you know," I smile hugging her once more before we start our long walk home.
