Chapter 13
The enemy wouldn't mess with you if you weren't somebody. Obviously, he sees your potential as a threat to his plan. –Anon
There is something absolutely magical about waking up in your own bed, in your own clothes, in your own home. Add the fact that I'm not covered in blood or withering in agonizing pain and it's going to be a good day.
You got the world on it's knees
You're taking all that you please
You want more! (You want more!)
But you'll get nothing from me
You're like the burden we bear
You love the hate that we share
You want more! (You want more!)
But you'll get nothing from me
But enemies! Enemies!
"So close," I grumble grabbing my phone to find DICK flashing on the screen. I roll my eyes and hit decline. Damon's been trying to get a hold of me since last night along with Rebekah. I received one call from Klaus in the wee hours of the morning, but I didn't answer him either. They can all just go to hell.
"Alba!" Danny screams making me lurch out of bed and bolt out the door. I make it half way down the stairs before I realize the reason for Danny's screeching. Roses, thousands of blood red roses fill up our home's little foyer before spilling out into the living room and no doubt kitchen. "Alba look at all of this!" Danny squeals happily tip toeing around all the crystal vases making sure not to topple any over.
"Where did all of this come from?" I ask managing to vault over six vases of flowers that were blocking the stairs. It smells like a garden in here; the fresh smell of roses invading my nostrils as I jump from one clear spot on the floor to the next.
"I don't know! I found it just a few minutes ago." I watch her bite her lip as she maneuvers her way into the kitchen. I follow behind her after I take a quick peek in the living room. Yep, roses cover the floor, couch, and coffee table. It's then that I know exactly who did all of this.
"Well I have to say Klaus did a fantastic job," I call emerging into the kitchen only to find it spilling over with White Lilly's. I sigh shaking my head as I jump over the Lilly's to Danny who can't stop smiling at the counter. I take a seat next to her and look at the vases of Roses and Lilly's situated in front of us, two envelopes with our names scrawled in elegant letters sticking out of them. "I can now say, I see the relation between Kol and Klaus." I nod taking my envelope and opening it. Danny does the same.
"We would like to invite you to lunch with the Mikealson Family. Your attendance is greatly appreciated. Cocktails will be served at noon sharp." Danny reads, looking at me in confusion. "Isn't noon a little early for cocktails?"
"Not when you're a thousand year old vampire." I say flipping the invitation over to find it blank. "Well I say we find a place for these flowers and sit in our pajamas eating brownies all day." I suggest looking forward to a day to ourselves.
"What about this?" She asks holding up the invitation.
"We don't show up. I'm sure they'll get the hint." I laugh sliding off the chair and throwing the piece of cardboard away.
"Well maybe we should go? I mean they invited us after all, it would be rude not to show up." Danny reasons picking out one of the Lilly's and inhaling its scent.
"We were there last night." I point out watching her mouth twist up in thought.
"Right, but maybe they have something to tell us." She tries to persuade shrugging her shoulders casually. "Just a thought."
"You want to see Kol again, don't you?" I grin when her face turns beat red.
"No! I just don't think it's a good idea to turn down their invitation is all." She says avoiding my eyes.
"Uh huh? That's the only reason?" I tease finding her discomfort highly amusing.
"Of course," She answers her voice rising higher with each syllable. She quickly averts her gaze to the Lilly's and I see the undeniable longing in her eyes. I don't particularly like that its Kol eliciting these feelings from her, but who am I to judge? Lord knows I've done far worse.
"Fine," I consent throwing my hands up. "Go get ready. We have to be there in an hour so hurry." I roll my eyes when she jumps out of her chair and runs around to hug me.
"Thank you so much! I promise you won't regret it!" Danny giggles disappearing down the hall.
"I can assure you I will." I mutter taking a rose out of the vase and sniffing it. Hmm what does one wear to a luncheon? "Leather," I snap my fingers going to my room, "leather is always good."
"I can't believe you wore that," Danny mutters as I knock on the door. I look down at my worn chucks, dark blue jeans, red halter top, and leather jacket in admiration. I think I look good, I mean I am a Martinez after all.
"It could be worse, I could have come naked," I stage whisper right as the door swings open revealing a very surprised Rebekah.
"You came," She states rather dumbly before recovering and ushering us inside. "Come in, everyone's waiting." She says stepping aside for us. I enter first waiting as Danny passes the threshold and gives Rebekah a hug.
"I really like your dress Bekah," Danny compliments admiring the golden silk material as it hangs flirtatiously off her body.
"Thank you Danny, you don't look half bad yourself." She winks straightening out the powder blue sundress Danny decided on. "Alba you look better."
"Thanks Rebekah," I nod curtly, "where is this shindig taking place anyway?" I raise my eyebrow catching the way she shakes her head.
"Sometimes you remind me too much of Damon," I hear her mutter as she passes me. "This way," she sighs leading us into what I assume to be the parlor. There's a fireplace, book cases, and numerous pieces of furniture spread around the massive dining table in the center of the room.
"Ah you made it!" Ester exclaims as I finally see her at the head of the table. Finn sits beside her followed by Klaus then Rebekah with Elijah at the other end of the table. Kol sits next to Elijah with two empty chairs next to him. "Please have a seat." She motions to the two empty chairs graciously as Danny quickly moves to take the one Kol is holding out for her. I take the seat closest to Ester and the one Klaus has miraculously appeared in front of.
"You look smashing love," Klaus murmurs when I sit, "As always." He adds pushing my chair in. I ignore him as everyone else takes their seats.
"Danny, darling, you look fantastic today." Kol smiles devilishly.
"Thank you," she mutters looking down at her hands. "You have a lovely home." She smiles looking around to each original.
"Thank you Danny, I built it myself." Klaus answers cockily looking straight at me. I deadpan at him looking to Elijah.
"Elijah, it's good to see you." I smile actually finding one face I don't mind speaking to.
"Likewise Miss Martinez," he nods as the servers come in with our food. I watch as one server in particular, a girl a little older than me with a pregnant belly struggles to carry the dishes in her hands.
"So Alba tell me about yourself?" I hear Ester ask, but I'm not listening as I watch the pregnant girl wince in pain as her co-workers add another dish to her other hand. She looks frail for a pregnant woman and my heart clenches when I watch her slowly start to go down.
"Alba?" Danny asks as everyone stares at me oblivious to the girl behind them. I don't waste time answering as I flash to the girl's side just in time to catch her and the dish before it shatters on the ground.
"Whoa there," I breathe holding her up as I place the dish on the table to better hold her. "Are you okay?" I ask guiding her to the seat I had occupied earlier. I sit her down noticing how pale she is, her brown hair falling out of its neat bun.
"I-I-I'm so sorry," she sobs putting her face in her hands. I frown crouching down in front of the girl.
"Oh Mrs. Mikealson I am so sorry!" An older woman, who I can only assume to be the boss, rushes in. I see the girl visibly wince when the woman continues to speak. "I am so sorry for Whitney's behavior. It won't happen again, I'll deal with her." The woman advances towards us, but I'm quick to jump up and intervene.
"Hi my name's Alba Martinez, I didn't catch yours?" I ask politely putting on a show. I know I should probably sit down and shut up, but something doesn't sit right with me. And when have I ever been one to sit back and be a good little girl?
"My name's Gretchen Miss Martinez and if you'll excuse me I need to talk to my employee in private." Her voice hardens as she glares daggers at the young girl.
"Right, I see you're a business woman, you know how to discipline your employees am I right?" I ask watching her eyes narrow in suspicion.
"That is right. I run tight ships if you can't keep up you're fired." She bites drawing back just a little when she notices the group's attention on her.
"Now I'm assuming Whitney here needs this job and from the looks of how far along she is, I'm pretty sure she shouldn't be out of bed. Now what would make her risk her and the child's life just to work for you?" I ponder aloud. "Whitney?" I call softly looking down at the girl in question.
"She refuses to give me maternity leave. If I don't show up she'll fire me and I can't afford to not have a job. I'm barely making it as it is." She sniffles more silent tears streaking down her face.
"Hmm," I hum looking back to Gretchen. "Well I'm pleased to say Whitney quits and you will never be hired anywhere in Mystic Falls again that you can be sure." I smirk watching Gretchen's face contort in anger.
"No! I need this job!" Whitney stands too fast as she gets light headed. I catch her arm and hold her up.
"No you don't Whitney. As you've already heard my name's Alba, here are the keys to my car, it's the black mustang parked outside." I say shoving the keys in her hands. "Go home, I'll find you later and explain everything, okay?" I answer seriously shaking my head at her flabbergasted protests. "Go home. I'll find you." I compel her watching her nod robotically as I turn to Gretchen. "You are going to continue to serve us with a smile and will leave right after without remembering anything that happened here." I compel her as she nods and leaves the room. I sigh pleased with myself as I take a seat and acknowledge the silence in the room.
"Well that was me in a nutshell; everything else about me is private and therefore will not be discussed." I smile and take a sip of my wine. I'm going to need about eight more glasses before the days through.
"Rebekah, I didn't get a chance to ask you, but how was the rest of your night with Matt?" Danny asks looking at her expectantly. We have just finished lunch and are waiting for the plates to be cleared. We didn't talk much after the spectacle I made, but I know I didn't offend any of them.
"It didn't go as well as I hoped," She bites glaring across the table at Kol. I hide a snicker as I watch the two's exchange.
"Oh I beg to differ. If I'm not mistaken I believe someone spent the night with Damon Salvatore." Kol raises his eyebrow in challenge when Klaus scoffs.
"Damon Salvatore? Really, Rebekah? You couldn't have picked another vampire out of the gutter?" He rolls his eyes.
"Oh and Caroline Forbes is so much better?" Rebekah taunts. The room is quickly getting heated and I nudge Danny as I signal towards the door.
"Well as much fun as the lunch was," I stand collecting Danny and backing towards the door. "I see you all have other things to discuss, but thank you Ester. It was lovely." I nod smiling at Elijah.
"Wait!" Ester booms making us freeze right at the door. So close. She walks until she's standing in the middle between me and her children. "You'll have to forgive my children; they can't be in the same room for too long." She smiles causing me to grin over her shoulder at Klaus and Rebekah.
"Oh no, I like at least three of them for sure." I smirk winking at Elijah who hides a laugh with a cough in his hand. I catch Klaus's furious gaze at it lingers on his brother before turning to me. I simply shrug and mouth Caroline.
"I'm glad to hear that, but there is something we need to discuss." She says seriously catching me off guard.
"What would that be?" I question crossing my arms just as a wave of pain crashes into me. I feel my breath get caught in my throat as I stumble into the wall.
"Alba!" Danny cries as I look to her on the floor clutching her stomach. Blood is pooling around her as she turns paler with every passing second. I drop to my knees beside her unable to find the source of the blood; I look up in a panic only to find the room has disappeared. We are sitting next to my mother's grave, but when I look back to Danny, she's gone.
"Danny!?" I scream whipping my head in circles trying to find her. I feel my heart being ripped out of my chest when I read the name on the tombstone next to my mothers. Danielle Martinez. I gasp in shock as the graveyard disappears and spirals into the originals dining room. They are all standing up now watching me in various states of curiosity and worry. Ester looks smug as she begins to speak.
"I showed you that for a reason, Alba." However, I don't give her time to finish that thought as I rush at her. But I'm instantly grabbed from behind as Finn bares his fangs at me protectively in front of Ester. I do the same twisting in the iron hold locked around my arms.
"Easy love," Klaus murmurs softly in my ear. The fact that Klaus is the one holding me only enrages me more. I chant a short spell under my breath that singes his arms as he lets go with a growl. I don't bother advancing towards Ester again; I turn on my heel reaching to grab Danny, only to find the space she occupied earlier empty.
"Where is she?" I growl moving towards the person closest to me which would be Klaus.
"Come on now sweetheart, don't make me hurt you." He warns as I chuckle to myself.
"Keep thinking that, maybe you'll actually be a challenge for once." I glare as he does the same. He starts moving towards me and just as we are about to clash Ester's voice rings out.
"Enough!" She barks making me clench my fists. "Danny is okay, she's helping Gretchen in the kitchen. She's fine." Ester informs me as I give my full attention to her. I can feel my pulse racing and manage to find Elijah's eyes as he stands off to the side. I take deep breaths as I stare at him liking the effect he has on me.
"That vision; will it come to pass?" I ask narrowing my eyes at Ester and Finn who hasn't moved from his position. I smirk at him which earns me a growl.
"Not unless you change it." She begins, "the future is never set in stone. Of course, I believe in fate, I believe some things are meant to be, but I don't think your sister's death is one of those things. I think you can change it."
"How?" I grit through my teeth beyond pissed that I'm here right now. I watch Ester smile knowingly as she returns to the table. She has all our attentions as she returns to her seat and motions to the chair next to her.
"Please have a seat."
"No." I cross my arms and stand still. "You tell me now or I leave and there will be no one that can stop me." I finish looking at each original.
"Well aren't you just a feisty little thing," Kol grins deviously. I roll my eyes while looking back at Ester. She doesn't look pleased, but she talks anyways.
"Before I tell you about changing Danny's fate, you must know everything." She sighs, "this is going to come as a shock to all of you I'm afraid." I share a look of confusion with all the originals as they focus on their mother. "Tell me Alba, when you first met Klaus, why did you stop to help him? You could have easily run away without him ever having known you were there, but you didn't."
"I couldn't leave him," I say glancing at Klaus, "it was like I was pulled to him. I couldn't let anything happen to him. I needed to help." I taper off looking to Ester, "What does this have to do with anything?"
"And last night when you were dealing with the witches what were you feeling?" I pucker my lips as I think over her answer.
"Anger and rage; I wanted to tear them apart."
"Why?" Ester asks as I scoff.
"They tortured me, made promises to kill Danny, then threatened Klaus and Rebekah." I answer without thinking. "There was no way I was going to let them live."
"But back there with the girl, you seem to have a compassionate side. Where was that side last night?" Ester questions coming to stand in front of me. I clench my jaw remembering the darkness surrounding my heart.
"Why does this matter?" I ask venomously ready to get the hell out of here.
"Because Alba Martinez, you are not just another hybrid." She answers softly. "You are the original Guardian."
