Chapter 18
"I will destroy you in the most beautiful way possible and when I leave you will finally understand, why storms are named after people." –Anon
"I won't do it." These are the first words that tumble out of Bonnie Bennett's mouth after she recovers from her shock.
"What do you mean you won't do it?" I grit narrowing my eyes into slits. If she thinks I'm going to back down she has another damn thing coming.
"I mean that I'm not doing the spell that will tie your life to Danny's. There's just no way." Bonnie shakes her head stubbornly as I send an incredulous look to Elena. She's staring at me with pity and slowly, but surely these two are pissing me off.
"Alright no," I laugh holding up my hands. "You told me the first time I ever asked you if there was a way to save Danny, that there wasn't. You lied." I smile daringly as she glares at me. "Not to mention how many times I've saved all of your asses from your incredibly ill thought out plans. So call me crazy, but I think you owe me." I give her the famous Martinez/Salvatore stare down, the one I pull out on dire occasions. It seems to be working as Bonnie instantly ducks her gaze.
"Fine. I'll do it." She growls lifting her angry eyes back to mine. "But you need to know once this is done, it can't be undone."
"I know." I nod looking between Bonnie who can't be more annoyed and Elena who can't decide where to look. "But I need you two to promise me that no one will find out about this." I say specifically watching Elena as she focuses her attention on me. "This isn't one of those things that you can talk about over tea time. Now I'm asking you politely instead of compelling you, don't make me regret it." I glare the underlying threat clear in my voice.
"I promise." Bonnie huffs brushing pass me on her way to the kitchen. "I'll grab the supplies." I smirk ever so slightly turning back to Elena. She's holding her arm rather awkwardly, but is remaining silent.
"Elena." This seems to snap her out of her stupor as she sighs.
"I promise, but are you sure this is what you want to do? There are other options!" She goads taking a small step forward. "What about Damon?"
"What about Damon?" I ask dead pan. "I'm sorry to tell you this Gilbert, but as much as you want to see the good in him. He doesn't care what happens to me. His only concerns are you and Stefan." I hold up a hand when she opens her mouth to say something. "It's okay with me, honestly. My only concerns are Danny," and the originals, "and I am not going to let her die before she has the chance to live."
"Just like you've had the chance to live?" Elena catches me off guard by her question. I merely shrug giving her the tiniest of smiles.
"I knew I wouldn't make it to my graduation. But I'm going to make sure Danny makes it to hers." It's all I have left to say as I turn my back on the solemn Gilbert and head to the kitchen. I get there just in time to have Bonnie roughly push me into a chair surrounded by candles. "What do I need to do?" I ask bracing myself as Bonnie places her hands on either side of my head.
"Sit there and shut up." She bites a little harshly to someone that's about to give her life away.
"Oooh kinky, I like it." I smirk, but I quiet down and focus on letting myself be open to the spell. If I don't give myself completely to Bonnie's magic it won't work and it has to work. I listen without a word as Bonnie chants in Latin. I expect to feel something click inside of me when she's all said and done, but I feel nothing. "Are you sure it worked?" I ask suspiciously standing from the chair.
"It worked." Bonnie answers picking up her candles not sparing me a glance. I quickly reach out to grab her elbow before she has time to go anywhere. She whips around in protest as I expect to see the always present anger in her eyes, but I'm shocked when I see sorrow.
"Thank you Bennett." I give her a genuine smile. "For everything you've done and no doubt will do in the future." I visibly stun her when I lean down to whisper in her ear so Elena can't hear. "You're strong Bonnie. Don't keep letting yourself be taken advantage of…you're better than that." I nod gratefully before walking towards the door. "Thanks Elena!" I yell over my shoulder hearing her sharp intake of breath.
"Did she just use my name?" I hear the doppelgänger ask Bonnie.
"I-I think she did." Bonnie mumbles sounding dazed. I just smirk and shake my head as I disappear into the night.
It's less than five minutes later that I walk through my front door. I see the television has been turned on so Danny must be up.
"Honey, I'm home!" I yell feeling only joy that I just saved my little sister. "What are you watch…" I trail off in my question as I round the corner to find Danny weeping into her hands. There's vomit on the couch next to her with only a little having gotten on her clothes. "Hey," I coo softly falling at my knees beside the couch. "It's okay Danny, it happens." I tell her prying her face away from her hands.
"I-I-I couldn't g-g-get up!" She wails a wave of tears pouring out of her big brown eyes. Instant guilt consumes my heart at not being here for her.
"Here, come on; let's go get you cleaned up." I say softly lifting her into my arms only to realize she has wet herself too. I kiss the top of her head as I carry her to the bathroom. I run some bath water for her before stripping her down and setting her in the tub. She remains silent staring down at her knees in shame. "Don't you dare look at yourself like that." I snap pouring water over her back.
"I couldn't get up to go to the bathroom Alba." Danny whispers weakly. "I can't walk without someone having to carry me." She pauses looking up at me through defeated brown eyes. "I heard what the doctor said. I'm dying." I clench my jaw at the utter acceptance in her voice.
"You are not dying. Not while I'm still around." I mutter helping her to a standing position before I wrap her up in a big fluffy towel. She doesn't say anything more as I help her change into some warm pajamas. I lay her gently in my bed before crawling in beside her. We lay there in the dark for what seems like forever before her voice breaks the silence.
"Alba." I never knew there could be so much emotion behind one word, but hearing Danny say my name I know exactly what she's feeling. With that one word I can hear the sorrow, anger, frustration, acceptance, and most of all; I can hear her fear.
"Danny, do you remember what I promised you? What I've been promising you since the day you were born?" I hear the faint sound of a light sob leave her lips, but she answers her voice thick.
"That as long as your heart is beating nothing and no one will ever hurt me." She sniffles wiping the tears from her eyes.
"Well I think it's time for a new promise." I turn my head to look at my baby sister. She's the one person that's never let me down and I think it's time to return the favor. Danny turns her head as well meeting my gaze as I gently take her pinkie in mine. "I promise that no matter where life takes us, whether together or apart, I'll always be with you. There will not be a day that you are alone. I promise." I whisper wrapping my pinkie tighter around hers.
"Alba, I'm scared." Danny's lip trembles as she searches my eyes. I stare back at her strong as ever. She needs a rock right now and I'm it.
"I know," I half-smile reaching over to wipe the stray tear escaping down her cheek. "But I'm your big sister, I will always be your big sister, and I want you to know that we are in this together. I'm never leaving you." This seems to finally crack her as the flood gates open. I pull her in close to me while uncontrollable sobs rack her body. I want to spill my guts right now and tell her that she's not dying, she doesn't have to be scared anymore, but I can't. Danny can't know until the time is right.
I wait until Danny is a hiccupping mess in my arms before I ask her the one question she can't say no to.
"Do you want to call Kol now?" I ask softly. It's silent for a few long minutes before Danny coughs clearing her throat.
"I thought you said we should wait until he calls me?" Danny questions interest in her voice. I knew Danny wouldn't be able to resist the chance at speaking with Kol. I think she's earned it after tonight.
"Well he called me today asking about you." I smirk when her body tenses up.
"What did he say?" She asks casually like she's not internally jumping for joy.
"Oh not too much after he finished yelling at me for leaving you alone with Matt," I grin triumphant when Danny giggles for the first time in days.
"He did?" She asks in disbelief looking up at me in awe.
"Hell yes he did." I smirk reaching over to grab the phone by her bed. "So yay or nay?" I ask waving the device in her face.
"Yay!" She beams, a real Danny smile that has me pulling away in shock.
"So you can smile!?" I accuse which earns me a half-hearted eye roll from Danny. "Okay only teasing. Here," I say handing her the phone. "I'll be downstairs while you talk. Don't do anything I wouldn't do." I wink playfully at her as she giggles into her hand. It's amazing how Kol, of all people, can turn her mood around. If I wasn't so happy that she is happy, I might be a little jealous. But she is happy and that's all that matters.
I don't waste time cleaning up the mess left on the couch. It doesn't take me long and when I'm done it looks like nothing ever happened. I could totally be a cleaning lady, you know, if I wasn't an original guardian surrounded by vampires, witches, and werewolves. That might be a deal breaker. I sigh when my phone starts vibrating on the end table. I snatch it up hitting the accept button not bothering to check the Id.
"Which original am I talking to?" I smirk when Rebekah's cool voice answers me.
"You're favorite, of course." I can just see the Cheshire cat grin turning up her lips.
"That's funny, I don't remember Elijah being with you." I snicker when she laughs humorlessly.
"Ha ha very funny. Now why is it, my brother just called me and demanded I turn around to find you?" She asks curiously as I narrow my eyes.
"Where are you going?" I ask expecting the huff I receive when I dodge her question.
"New York. Nic needed my help getting Finn. I didn't turn around if you are curious. I figured you are just ignoring Nic's calls."
"I was busy," I mutter flipping through my phone to find Klaus has invested quite a bit of time trying to get a hold of me. "So how did the searching go today?" I ask drawing her attention away from me. She stays silent automatically tipping me off that something happened. "Damn it Rebekah, did you sleep with Damon?" I hiss jumping to conclusions and apparently the right one.
"Yes I did and then that bitch Sage got into my head when I was sleeping. They know about the tree." I feel something spark deep inside me at her words.
"Rebekah," I full on growl like an animal, something I've never done before. It surprises us both as I take the phone away from my ear in shock.
"What the hell was that?" Rebekah practically screams, but I quickly shush her.
"I don't know. So the Salvatore's know then?" I ask already thinking of ways to thwart any and all plans they have.
"They did, but that sneaky wench Sage went behind Damon's back and told me where the tree was. The wood was used to build the old wickery bridge so we got to it in time to set every last piece on fire. You should have seen Damon's face. It was priceless." She replies smugly satisfaction evident in her voice.
"Are you absolutely sure?" I ask the stirring in my belly not going away.
"Yes I'm sure…how's our girl?" Rebekah asks referring to Danny. Klaus must have filled her in on the details.
"She's as well as can be expected," I sigh listening to the conversation going on upstairs.
"The quarterback did what!?" I hear Kol yell being over dramatic as always. I tune out once I hear Danny's soft laughter.
"She's talking to Kol right now." I smile shaking my head. "He's pissed because Matt watched Danny today for me."
"Well Kol always was the jealous type," Rebekah says before letting out a string of curses followed by loud honking. "I swear people nowadays!" I chuckle quietly moving about the room rearranging things. "Listen I have to go, I just got pulled over. I'll call you later." Rebekah snarls hanging up on me. Well I hope for that cop's sake she finds him cute because if she doesn't she'll most likely kill him.
I slump into the nearest chair exhausted after today. I have a feeling tomorrow won't be any better, but I don't think I'll mind. I finally got what I came here for, the rest doesn't matter anymore. Danny is saved.
"Alba!" Danny screams my name startling me out of my dreams. Light is flooding in through the window as I jump to my feet only to fall down in pain.
"Ahh," I groan clutching my stomach at the sharp throb in my lower intestine. It takes my breath away as I try to get to my feet. It almost works until my leg breaks sending me crashing to the floor for a second time. This time I full on scream looking down at the broken appendage only to find it mending itself back together.
"Alba! Alba!" I can hear Danny trying to move around upstairs as I lean my head back holding my mouth.
"Danny stay there!" I gasp once the pain starts to ebb. I glance down at my leg to find it back to normal and the sensation in my gut is no longer present. What the fuck just happened? I manage to stand on shaky legs as I vampire speed up the stairs and burst through my bedroom door. Danny is sitting on the edge of the bed out of breath, but aware.
"You're okay! What happened?" She asks worriedly watching me as I come to sit beside her. I shake my head trying to rid myself of what just happened.
"Nothing, I'm sorry. I fell down and hurt my ankle, but it healed itself." I give her a measly smile. "Why were you yelling? Are you okay?" I ask now my turn to panic as I check her for injuries.
"Yeah I'm fine." She blushes looking away embarrassed. "I just wanted to tell you that I fell asleep on the phone with Kol last night."
"Oh really?" I tease watching her face light up as she eagerly nods. She looks better today; it's going to be a good day for her. "What did you guys talk about?"
"I kept teasing him about Matt." She giggles clearly pleased with herself. "He was so mad."
"That's my girl!" I laugh standing up and grabbing some clothes. "Come on, get dressed," I say throwing a wad of clothes at her face. "We have some things to do today."
"Like what?" She asks curiously trying to get her shirt off, but she's failing miserably.
"It's a surprise," I grin bending down to help her with her clothes before shimming her into a pair of jeans, a white long sleeve shirt, and an oversized blue and white stripped hoodie to keep her warm. I quickly do the same changing into jeans and a simple black V-neck. I throw my hair in a messy pony tail and call it a day as I get things around.
"Alba, I'm not really up for going out today." Danny answers hesitantly like she could be lying about not wanting to go out.
"Too bad cupcake," I smirk pulling her up gently and scooping her into my arms. "Because we are going on a road trip."
"Alba, are we going to Disney World?" Danny asks beside me as she feigns casualty. But from the wild glint in her eye I know she's internally going mad about the idea.
"Sorry Danny, not today." I frown watching her out of the corner of my eye as I drive.
"Oh right," she shrugs turning her head towards the window. I always forget that Danny is still a kid or a mixture of kid/adult. We pass the Thank you for coming to Mystic Falls sign. I snort when I read the words come again. You're lucky if you leave in the first place.
Give a little time to me or burn this out,
We'll play hide and seek to turn this around,
All I want is the taste that your lips allow,
My, my, my, my, oh give me love,
I stare at my phone in debate as I decide whether I want to answer or not. Either one of two things will happen; he'll either A.) still be upset about last night and give me hell or B.) he'll be cheery and his good ole British self. With a sigh, I reluctantly click accept.
"If you're going to yell at me I suggest you think twice about it because I will not hesitate to hang up on your ass." I jump right in sliding into the other lane.
"Actually love, I was merely going to ask how your morning has been." I hear the cockiness in his voice as he continues. "I guess I received my answer."
"Don't you have some blond bimbo to stalk?" I ask sending Danny an eye roll.
"Well darling, if you want I'm sure I could find out what Caroline Forbes is up to these days." He answers smugly trying to get under my skin.
"Well I'm pretty sure she's back in town so I would try her house first. If she's not there then definitely hit up the Mystic Grill, god knows their little gang can't go a day without sitting in that crappy joint." I inform him a satisfied smile turning up my lips. "If you need other suggestions to where your princess might be, you have my number." I snicker hanging up on him before he can say another word.
"Was that Klaus?" Danny asks dodging my phone as I toss it in the backseat.
"It was," I shrug ignoring her pointed gaze. "What?"
"Did you tell him where to find Caroline?" She asks crossing her arms stubbornly as I give her an innocent smile.
"Maybe."
"Alba!" Danny huffs throwing up her arms dramatically, "why would you do that? I know you like him! I see the way you look at him when you think no one else is watching. Why do you keep pushing him away?" She asks completely serious as she tries to gauge my reaction. I remain passive and uninterested as I answer her.
"Listen Danny, Klaus just isn't my type."
"Oh right, I mean who else do I know with power, strength, classic good looks, and an attitude that could rival the original hybrid? Oh wait!" She snaps her fingers like she just got an idea. "You." She deadpans. "Why can't you just let yourself be happy for once?"
"I am letting myself be happy. I'm the happiest when I'm with you." I send her a small smile as she just shakes her head annoyed.
"Alba, I'm not going to be there, okay? You have got to accept this. I didn't want to have to say it like this, but I'm dying right now. Nothing is going to save me this time and I am going to be forced to leave you." She says her voice the strongest I've ever heard it. "And I will not leave you here alone. So I want you to pick up that phone and call Klaus back." She demands shocking me with how confident she's gotten.
"Where was this confidence months ago?" I ask playfully, but Danny doesn't find it amusing.
"Don't change the subject." I smirk nodding my head.
"As you wish," I sigh reaching back and grabbing my phone. With a final look from Danny I hit the call back button.
"Well this is surprising. Did you have more suggestions for me, love?" Klaus asks sounding a cross between playful and annoyed.
"Actually I do." I smirk tightening my grip on the steering wheel. "I suggest you ah!" I scream dropping the phone as a sharp pain rips through my chest. I don't waste time pulling the car over as I groan when another pain starts in my back.
"What's going on? Alba!"
"Alba! Alba what's wrong!?" Danny yells reaching over to touch me, but I quickly jump out of the car. I land in a heap on the gravel another scream ripping from my throat when my arm snaps in half.
"Klaus! Something's happening! I don't know-oh my god her arm just broke!" I vaguely hear Danny panicking around the pain erupting in my body.
"Danny where are you? Tell me where you are and I'll come get you."
"I don't know! We're on the road leaving town!" I hear Danny sob as a low growl leaves my throat. It's then I hear it. The undeniable beating of her heart…and I want it.
Danny's POV
"I'm on my way Danny, okay? You tell Alba to hold on." Klaus's voice floats through the receiver, but I don't hear it. I watch in relief as Alba suddenly sits up seemingly unharmed.
"Alba!" I cry quickly taking off my seatbelt so I can crawl over the seat to her. However, I stop myself when Alba finally turns to face me. I clamber back towards the passenger door in horror.
"K-Klaus…" I squeak a new kind of fear pumping in my heart when Alba lets out an animalistic growl. I think Klaus heard it too because I hear his sharp intake of breath.
"Danny, love, do me a favor? Lock yourself in the car for me. Can you do that, sweetheart?" Klaus sounds urgent as I shake my head no. I can't look away from Alba's eyes. Instead of the ice blue I'm used to seeing; her eyes are now glowing with a hue of blue I've never seen before. It would be almost hypnotizing if she didn't have four elongated fangs; two on top and two on bottom poking through her mouth.
"Alba?" I whisper around my shock and paralyzing fear. She doesn't seem to hear me or even recognize that it is me. I don't see my older sister at all as I stare at what she's becoming. It's only when she stands showing her claws that I scream.
Klaus POV
"Alba?" I hear Danny whisper in fright as I blow past the town square.
"Danny lock the do-"I'm cut off when a blood curdling scream rips through the phone making me pull the device away from my ear. "Damn it Danny!" I yell throwing my phone down when I hear the dial tone. I smash my foot harder against the gas pedal and gun the engine. The car instantly takes off as I curse to myself. I knew something was wrong I could feel it. I should have come back last night, but I needed to capture Finn. I'm pulled from my internal rant when Rebekah phones me.
"Did you find her?" Rebekah rushes out sounding out of breath. I grit my teeth and shake my head.
"I just left Rebekah. What? Did you expect me to magically teleport my way to them?" I ask sarcastically expecting the huff I receive in response.
"You don't have to be so mean, Niklaus." She snarls as I hear a distinctive groan in the background.
"I see you managed to catch yourself a Salvatore." I muse finding the whole situation hilarious.
"I see you still haven't found our guardian yet." Rebekah grits making me clench my jaw. "She'll probably be dead by the time you get to her." I know Rebekah is baiting me and its working as I switch gears pushing the car to its limits.
"Are you keeping an eye on my witch?" I growl not liking my plans getting foiled, but I need to get to Alba.
"She's still clueless as ever," Rebekah sighs before I hear the clack of her heels as she walks to another room. "Nic I don't feel good. I think something's really wrong with her. Elijah and Kol have both called me saying the same thing."
"I'm on it." I narrow my eyes when I see a flash of white out of my peripheral vision. "Watch my witch." I demand hanging up when I see the familiar black mustang up ahead. I screech to a stop right behind it before flashing to the open driver's side door. I don't smell blood as I bend down to find a passed out Danny in the passenger seat. I sigh in relief when I find no harm has come to her.
"Alba." Danny mumbles her head swinging back and forth as she comes to.
"Danny, where is your sister?" I ask gently guiding her face in my direction. She's still out of it as she mutters an answer, but I hear it anyways.
"The woods." I nod my head lifting Danny into my arms making sure not to bump her head as I maneuver her out of the vehicle. "She growled at me."
"I know," I sigh depositing her in my car. "I'm going to find Alba, I'll be right back." I inform her before closing the door and turning toward the woods. I listen expecting to hear Alba's light breathing or at the very least the crunch of her feet as she runs, but I hear nothing. Not a damn thing. I quickly move on to my next sense as I scan the trees, my blood running cold when I spot a lone black shirt shredded into pieces hanging from a limb. I flash over to the tree snatching the material and inhaling her scent. I narrow my eyes when I follow her smell farther into the woods where I stumble upon what I could only assume to be her jeans. Or what's left of them anyways. "Alba, where are you?" I growl becoming angrier and more worried by the second. It's only when I walk a few more feet in front of me that her scent changes.
Whereas Alba has a natural scent of lavender and honey, this smells like something much different. I narrow my eyes into slits when I recognize the scent or part of it. With a howl of rage, I slam my fist through a towering oak tree watching in satisfaction as it crashes to the ground. I promptly turn on my heel and start back to the car. I would know that scent anywhere, hell I've been following that scent for months. Werewolves and an alpha no less.
Rebekah POV
"You know, it's amazing the pleasure I get out of torturing you." I grin slicing another slash through Damon's chest. He's dangling helplessly from bear traps hung from the ceiling and I'm slowly, but surely bleeding the vervain out of his system.
"I think the pleasure comes from seeing me shirtless," he smirks never losing his cocky attitude.
"Been there, done that." I smile drawing a line of blood from his heart to his belly button. "I've had better." I shrug casually turning my back on him to grab a different tool.
"Oh is that so?" I can hear the smugness in his voice as he continues, "because if I recall correctly, you were the one that threw yourself at me…twice." He whispers the last part like it's a secret. "Face it; you'll take attention wherever you can get it." I growl flashing over to him before he can blink.
"I think," I grit burying the knife in my hand to the hilt in his gut, "that you need to learn some manners." I twist the knife causing a painful wail to leave his lips.
I got this feeling on the summer day when you were gone.
I crashed my car into the bridge. I watched, I let it burn.
I threw your shit into a bag and pushed it down the stairs.
I crashed my car into the bridge.
I roll my eyes walking over to my phone and hitting the accept button.
"What do you want?" I snap impatiently watching Damon hang his head from lack of energy. I smirk at how weak he looks.
"I found Danny." Klaus's voice booms through the phone. I can hear the raw anger as I wait for him to say he's found Alba too. When he doesn't continue I automatically assume the worst.
"And Alba?" I ask ignoring Damon as his head flies up to send me a pointed glare. I think about leaving the room so he can't hear me, but I decide against it.
"She wasn't there. I found her clothes; they looked like they had been savagely torn off her." He growls sending shivers down my spine. The last time he was this angry Katherine snapped her own neck rendering herself useless for his ritual. "It had to be-"
"Wolves," I hiss my nostrils flaring at the idea. I start to pace the floor running a restless hand through my hair. "Wait, what would they want with Alba? Naked no less," I ask my own anger subsiding as I really think about this. I raise any eyebrow when a growl vibrates low in Damon's throat. "Do you mind? I'm on the phone." I glare flicking Damon's nose like I'm punishing a dog.
"I don't know Rebekah!" Klaus snarls making me shake my head as a new idea comes to mind.
"Klaus are you sure it was wolves that took Alba? What if…" I trail off wiping a hand over my mouth. "Klaus what if Alba turned?"
"Not possible." Damon voices stubbornly shaking his head.
"Don't be stupid Rebekah. It's not even a full moon and we would have known if she were a werewolf." Klaus's condescending tone rides my last nerve as I punch Damon right in the face out of anger.
"Think about it brother! She disappears in the woods, you find her shredded clothes, and she's nowhere to be found. Tell me did you smell anyone else out there!?" I huff exasperated when he remains silent clearly giving me my answer. "We don't know what being the original guardian entails Nik. It's quite possible she can turn on her own free will."
"Original Guardian?" Damon questions his eyes holding a large amount of curiosity. "What in the hell did you do to her!?" He yells thrashing around in his bonds.
"I'm almost there. We'll discuss this later." Klaus replies before hanging up on me for the second time that day. I roll my eyes shoving my phone in my back pocket.
"Where is Alba?" Damon asks his eyes holding a new fire. I cock my head to the side studying him.
"Wow you almost sound genuinely concerned about her." I laugh shaking my head. "A little late for that, isn't it Damon?"
"What is an original guardian?" He groans when I grab a hold of the knife I left in his gut. I rip it out viciously enjoying the scream that ripples out of his mouth.
"Oh she didn't tell you?" I grin deciding it's about time someone clued Damon in. "Haven't you ever wondered how Alba came to be? How you managed to create a daughter so powerful that she can take down vampires almost as old as the world?"
"Don't play games Rebekah," Damon sneers trying to remain upright. "Just tell me what you're talking about."
"Oh, but I thought you liked to play games?" I smile daringly when his patience begins to slip.
"Rebekah!" Damon yells as I hear the witches' heartbeat spike in the other room.
"Now Damon," I tsk circling him as I trail a light hand down his back. "Hasn't anyone ever told you the best stories take time?" I smirk right before shoving the knife through his spinal cord.
Danny POV
I awake to the undeniable wail of a phone ringing. I rub the sleep out of my eyes as I sit up groggily glancing around my surroundings. I'm in the same room I had slept in a few days earlier except this time there is no smirking Kol to greet me. That thought alone sends a pang of sadness through me, but it's quickly washed away when I remember the day's events.
"Oh my god Alba," I whisper to myself putting my face in my hands. I feel the tears coming on as I recall her eyes, they didn't look human, and she didn't look human.
"Danny?" I jump when I feel a hand land on my shoulder. I look up in surprise to find Klaus's bemused smile. "I'm sorry love I didn't mean to scare you." I shake my head waving him off.
"No you're fine. I'm just a little jumpy." I give him a half smile that doesn't quite reach my eyes. "Did you find her?" I squeak every ounce of hope I have diminishing with a simple shake of his head.
"I'm going to find her Danny." He takes my hand determination in his gaze as he peers into my eyes. "I am not going to let anything happen to your sister." He promises making my lip tremble as I wrap my arms tightly around his neck.
"I know you will," I nod gasping lightly in surprise when Klaus pulls me to his side so my legs are curled against his and my head is lying comfortably on his chest. A part of me knows the only reason he's comforting me like this is because I'm dying and because he misses my sister. But I'm not going to complain because frankly I need it. "Klaus, do you like my sister?" I ask needing to know for myself that his feelings are genuine.
"I do."
"Would you do anything for her?"
"I would."
"Does she give you butterflies when she walks in the room?" I ask earning a deep chuckle from the hybrid.
"She does, but let's not tell people that. I have a reputation to keep up with." He teases making me laugh as I wrap my arms around his stomach.
"Would you give up everything to be with her?" I ask arching my neck so I can look him in the eyes. "Is she worth it?" I wait for his answer as his blue eyes stare intensely into my brown ones. His hair is a disheveled mess today, but he still looks like a million bucks even with his five o'clock shadow peppering his chin. He puts up a front I can see that right now as he tries to keep his feelings hidden, but it's obvious what he wants.
"She's worth it all." He whispers his eyes holding a truth buried deep within him. I stare at him a moment longer before I turn my face away from his.
"Good because I need you to do something for me." I say curling tighter against him and adjusting my beanie.
"What is that, love?" Klaus questions the curiosity evident in his voice. I sigh closing my eyes for a split second as I regain my breath. I needed to do this; I had to do this for Alba.
"I've been thinking a lot about this and when I die I need you to wipe Alba's memories of me. She can't know I ever existed." I say my voice quivering with each word. It doesn't surprise me when Klaus has me turned around and facing him before I can blink. His face is a mix of confusion and unattainable rage.
"Why would you ask me something like that?" He demands to know his gaze so intense that I have to look away. "Answer me Danny." I feel like a scolded child as I glance up at him through my lashes.
"Look at everything's that's happened Klaus. Alba has lost so much already! Our mother, her childhood, any shot she had at a normal life and now she has to watch me die. We both know Alba does not do well with being helpless and that is exactly what she is right now. Alba is strong, I've always known that, but I don't think she's going to make it this time." I cry the silent tears that never seem to stop falling creating streaks down my cheeks. "When I die, it's going to destroy her in the worst way possible and I won't do that to her; I refuse to be another painful memory she has to carry around with her." I bite my lip to keep from sobbing further as I hang my head. I wring my hands silently in my lap as I try not to think about Alba forgetting me.
"Danny, look at me." I just shake my head at Klaus's request. However, I should have known he would make me look at him one way or another. His hands are cupping my face and I'm staring straight into his baby blues before I can protest. "I admire your drive, love, I really do. But there is nothing in this world that will make Alba forget you." He says this with such certainty that it makes me sob harder. "In all my years on this earth I have never seen anyone willing to do half the things Alba would do for you. She is truly crazy that one when it comes to you and do you want to know why?" He asks as I nod through the torrential wave of tears clouding my vision. "Because she is you're older sister and you are the one person on this earth that she can't live without."
"Klaus!" I wail trying to pull my face away from his hands. "I'm trying to save her!"
"No you're trying to make her forget her sole reason for living. Whether you are here in the flesh or watching every stupid situation your sister manages to throw herself into from somewhere else, you are still going to be there with her. I know for a fact you will never leave her Danny. She will get through this and she will be okay because your sister would never want to disappoint you by giving up. So no I will not try to erase her memory of you because at the end of the day she'll need them to heal." Klaus finishes trying to wipe the tears from my eyes, but it's useless. So he pulls me to him as I cry into his chest and commit this moment to memory. It's not every day the big bad hybrid let's down his guard.
Damon POV
The crystal blue of the water glimmers like diamonds in the afternoon sun. It looks inviting as I peer over the edge of the dock to the murky water below. It's the perfect day with not a cloud in sight as I stand in only my swim trunks.
"Daddy!" A high-pitched squeal interrupts my thoughts as I twist around just in time to catch the little girl flinging herself in my arms.
"Well if it isn't my favorite girl," I smile gazing into the big blue eyes that mirror my own.
"Alba, honey, come here and let me put some sunscreen on you!" I gaze up at the tinkling voice I've grown to love as I meet deep brown eyes.
"But mommy I want to swim!" Alba whines pouting as she turns soulful eyes on me. "Daddy, tell mommy I don't need sunscreen."
"Yeah Daddy, tell me." Alex crosses her arms teasingly as she stares me down. I can't help the grin that splits my face as I take in her black bikini and brown hair that's blowing in the breeze. She looks stunning.
"Well I think you and mommy could use some sunscreen," I smirk sauntering over to Alex as Alba groans. "Hey gorgeous," I smile suggestively receiving a playful eye roll from her as she reaches up to give me a peck on the lips.
"Fiine," Alba caves wiggling in my arms until I set her down. Her mom and I watch as she holds out her arms waiting impatiently for Alex to put the lotion on her. "Go ahead mommy, I'm ready." She giggles jumping when Alex puts the first handful on her leg. "That's cold!" I watch lovingly as Alba does what her mom tells her until finally she's done. "Done!" Alba yells trying to make a break for it.
"Ah ah ah!" Alex laughs dragging a very frustrated Alba back to her. "You forgot your floaties!" Alex quickly slides the gaudy pink devices up each of Alba's arms. "You're all set baby girl!" She beams kissing her forehead as Alba takes off for the end of the dock. Before she jumps into the water she turns wide eyes on me. "Daddy! Let's go!" She squeals jumping up and down as my heart melts.
"I'm coming sweetie," I grin walking to her, but I only make it half-way when a new voice stops me.
"Damon?"
"Elena?" I gasp turning around to find Alex is gone replaced with the girl I've fallen in love with. She looks amazing in a white summer dress with a large smile plastered on her face. "What are you doing here?" I ask in confusion wondering how she could have gotten here.
"I came for you," she says like it's the most obvious thing in the world. "I want you to come with me." I, instantly, take a step towards her not wanting to deny her of anything.
"Damon!" I whirl around when Alba's voice shatters my thoughts. She's no longer the little girl I just saw, but the woman I've come to know. "Don't go with her, stay with me." She pleads her eyes holding so much emotion.
"Damon?" Elena calls my name as I look helplessly towards her.
"Damon!"
"Damon!"
"Damon!" I shake my head closing my eyes when both of them start to call my name.
"No!" I yell waking up to realize I'm still in the Mikaelson mansion with a smirking Rebekah standing in front of me.
"You bitch," I mumble dropping my head when it becomes too heavy to lift.
"It's not fun when someone messes with your thoughts, is it?" She asks raising a perfectly manicured eyebrow when I just groan in response. "How was trying to decide between your daughter and Elena?" She asks smugly making me grit my teeth. The bitch thinks she's so clever.
"A lot like trying to decide which one I want to kill more, you or your psycho brother." I grunt when Rebekah just laughs.
"Well you don't have to worry you're pretty little head over deciding between Alba and Elena anymore. Because I'm pretty sure Alba wants nothing to do with you after she found out you were conspiring to kill us." Rebekah grins in amusement at my expense.
"Oh right, you've compelled her to be your little puppet." I bite not believing for one second Alba would choose them over me.
"Oh no, we didn't have to compel Alba to do anything." She sighs grabbing a chair and straddling it facing me. "I think it's time I tell you a little story," she smiles before telling me everything. From her mother begging Laurita for help, to her family's curse, to Alex and I having Alba, to Alba accepting her responsibilities as Original Guardian then almost being killed by her family's darkness, to now. Once she's all said and done I can't think of a thing to say. "And that my dear Damon is how Alba is so much more than a miracle baby," Rebekah smirks as I weakly shake my head.
"It doesn't change anything," I mumble more to myself than Rebekah. Now the need to kill the originals is more urgent than ever. Once they are gone, Alba will no longer be the original guardian, and she'll be free to live her life. She may not be able to see it, but I can and I will save her.
Stefan POV
The grill is packed tonight, but that doesn't faze me as I continue to spy on Finn and Sage. I feel like I've been here for hours listening to them catch up and "rekindle" the love they once shared. If I have to hear another second about their past I think I might stake myself. However, I watch as the waitress drops off their tequila shots with a hint of vervain as the special ingredient.
"To live life to the fullest," I watch Sage toast holding her shot glass up. I take that as my cue to leave as I get up and start walking across the floor.
"To living life," Finn agrees as both shoot their drinks before quickly spitting them back up.
"Oh, what the hell?" Sage chokes clawing at her throat as Finn states the obvious.
"Vervain," he hisses spinning around as I stop and pointedly stare at him. I give a small smirk before exiting through the doors. I don't waste time pulling out my stake as I wait around the corner for them. It's not a second later that the door swings open revealing Finn as I take a stab at him. Pun intended. Of course, Sage walks out at that exact moment and throws me to the ground so the stake is sent tumbling down the steps.
"Finn, the stake!" Sage yells as she holds me down. I watch feigning anger as Finn runs down the steps. He doesn't even make it to the stake before Elena and Matt are bursting through the back door. Elena quickly shoots him in the stomach with an arrow and Matt seizes the moment to stab Finn in the heart.
"Finn no!" Sage screams abandoning me to rush down the steps to her lover. I stand up watching in mild fascination as Finn's body turns grey then catches fire. I'm wondering if this is happening to every original all over the world when I hear it. It's the undeniable roar of a wounded animal in the night. I turn around half expecting something to come limping out of the dark, but nothing ever does. I quickly leave bringing Elena with me as we head back to the house unaware of the war we just started.
3rd POV
Damon is still dangling helplessly from the bear traps when Stefan walks into the room. He's carrying a duffle in his right hand and he looks beyond pissed. Damon could only assume it had something to do with the fact that the originals are now unlinked.
"This was much different in my head." Damon mutters slipping in and out of consciousness.
"Klaus, I'm here! Let's do this!" Stefan yells watching the doorway until Klaus and Rebekah enter.
"Oh good, a hero." Klaus smirks stopping just inside the doorway. "What do you want?" He asks to which Stefan slides the duffle bag of white oak stakes at his feet.
"I'm here to make a deal." Stefan remarks watching Klaus stare down at the stakes in distaste.
"Stefan, what are you doing?" Damon hisses in anger, but he's ignored.
"Eight stakes made of white oak; the part of Wickery Bridge that you forgot to burn." Stefan says as Klaus looks to Rebekah on the verge of anger.
"That's impossible." Rebekah shakes her head incredulous.
"Actually it's not. Finn is dead." Now this pulls both originals up short, but Rebekah is the only one to show it.
"You killed my brother?" She asks looking to Klaus who is as impassive as ever.
"Damon in exchange for the last eight weapons that can kill you," Stefan compromises with Klaus who looks to find this whole situation amusing.
"And how do I know there aren't any more left?" Klaus questions smugly watching Stefan intensely.
"Because there aren't," Stefan doesn't hesitate to answer. Klaus merely grins shaking his head.
"Let's be certain, shall we?" He muses walking over to Damon who can barely hold his head up straight. "Leave."
"No." Damon denies Klaus of his wishes earning a chuckle from the hybrid.
"Go on. Leave." Klaus demands earning no response from Damon.
"Nik, he's my plaything not yours," Rebekah pouts crossing her arms. Klaus simply ignores her as he grabs Damon by the throat and jerks his head up.
"I said, go home." Klaus compels Damon stepping away in sick triumph when the vampire starts to pull his wrists out of the bear traps. Damon screams in agonizing pain when the flesh peels away where the bear trap is digging in. "Alright, stop, stop, stop, before you hurt yourself. Well, seeing that he can finally be compelled. Now." Klaus grabs his throat once again his pupils dilating, "Minus the stake that's in my brother, how many more stakes are out there that can kill me?"
"Eleven." Damon answers monotone as Stefan closes his eyes and hangs his head.
"Eleven! Really? So, not eight then?" Klaus shouts turning accusing eyes on Stefan.
"You really shouldn't have lied." Rebekah speaks up shaking her head at the stupid vampire.
"I'll get you the other three." Stefan bites in anger.
"Yeah, that'll be nice." Klaus nods before thinking about it. "Or since you lied, maybe I'll just compel your brother to chew out his own tongue."
"What is wrong with you?" Stefan yells disgusted with the monster in front of him.
"What is wrong with you?! Do you really have no appreciation for me? I have given you someone to hate, to loathe, a target for all of your anger; so you don't have to turn it on yourself. I have given your life purpose, as your friend." Klaus laughs turning his back on the youngest Salvatore. "I really think you should be thanking me." Klaus sighs full of himself as Stefan rushes Klaus a white oak stake in hand. However, before Stefan can even take a step towards the hybrid a white blur passes through the room pouncing on Stefan sending the stake clattering to the ground. There is not a closed mouth in the room as everyone watches the scene in front of them in shock.
"What the hell!?" Stefan yells only to be silenced when a ferocious roar leaves the beast mouth showing off a set of sharp fangs that would tear Stefan to pieces. No one dares to move as they stare at the white tiger that is currently pinning Stefan down under its massive body. Its coat is as white as the driven snow and its eyes glow a brilliant blue that adds to its overall beauty. It's only when the tiger bares it's fangs in Stefan's face again that Damon's voice rings throughout the room.
"Alba!" Damon yells causing an instant reaction from the tiger. In under a second, it's off of Stefan and standing on its hind legs towering over Damon's weak form. "Alba." Damon stares up into the eyes that he's come to adore. Without a word the tiger lowers its head to nuzzle Damon and lick the wound on his cheek. Everyone watches in amazement as the cut stiches itself back together.
"Klaus," Stefan says crawling to his feet; he doesn't make it very far before the tiger is in front of him again. Stefan falls flat on his ass as he scurries to the wall watching as the tiger paces protectively in front of Klaus and Rebekah.
"It's alright, love, Stefan isn't going to hurt us." Klaus smirks running his hand through the tiger's fur fondly. He will never admit it, but he's just as shocked as the rest of them. "Now you only have to get me the other two stakes and if you don't I will not hesitate to kill you both." Klaus threatens just as Rebekah huffs clearly over her shock.
"This is ridiculous." She growls walking over to Damon releasing him from the traps.
"What are you doing?" Klaus barks as Rebekah unlatches his left arm watching him drop to the floor.
"I brought him here. I get to release him. My rules now. Bring us the stakes and you both live. Take your brother as a sign of good faith." Rebekah nods her head picking up the duffle bag as she saunters out of the room.
"Bring us the stakes. All of them. Or I will wage a war against everyone you love. I hope I'm being clear." Klaus intimidates Stefan once again before turning his back and leaving the room. The white tiger sits and keeps guard until both of the Salvatore brothers are out of the house.
Alba POV
I come to on the floor of the Mikaelson's ballroom. I look around me to see that it's still dark out and I can hear Rebekah and Klaus arguing in the parlor. I also find that I am covered in dirt and blatantly naked. I'm sad to say this wouldn't be the first time this has happened to me.
I quickly and quietly stand before sneaking out of the room and up the stairs. I enter the first room I find and of course it's Klaus's. I roll my eyes at my horrible luck, but I reconsider when I see his tub.
"Oh such a glorious sight," I whisper closing and locking the door before I test the waters. I don't know how long I'm in there, but it's long enough to release a cloud of steam when I swing open the door to the bedroom.
"Well I don't recall it being my birthday," I pull the towel tighter around me when I finally spot Klaus lounging on his bed; the smirk evident on his face.
"Well I don't recall ever turning into a tiger before so I guess I'm just full of surprises tonight." I smirk winking at him as I go to his closet. "Now which shirt can I wear?" I ask looking over my choices. I feel the towel slip as it reveals more of my back.
"Hmm," Klaus hums in my ear sending shivers down my spine as he lays a hand on my waist. "So many choices, but which one to choose?" Klaus whispers, his close proximity making me insane.
"Pick Fabio before I go raid Rebekah's closet." I bite gritting my teeth at the heat radiating from his body.
"Then why don't you?" Klaus asks his voice husky as he starts to nuzzle my neck. I groan hanging my head which only goads his mouth lower to my shoulder as he sweeps the hair out-of-the-way. "What do you want Alba?" Klaus asks stirring a new kind of fire in my belly. Any other time I would have stopped him by now, but I'll be dead in a month. I think it's about time I did something for myself.
"You." I whisper receiving a growl from Klaus in response. He has me on my back and pinned underneath him on the bed in a second. He wastes no time attacking my lips as I kiss him back with just as much vigor. I moan when he slips his tongue into my mouth and slides a large hand up my bare thigh.
"You're so beautiful," he murmurs trailing butterfly kisses down my neck and along my collarbone. I feel my heart tug at that as I try not to think about what this will do him, but then again he's an original. I wasn't his first girl and I sure as hell won't be his last.
"Shut up and kiss me," I demand flipping us over so I'm straddling his waist. I immediately cover his lips with mine groaning when his hands slide into my hair. For tonight, I'm not thinking about what just happened or what the consequences will arise. I'm thinking about what I want and right now, I want Klaus.
