CHAPTER FIFTEEN

"Is Callie here?"

Lena blinked in surprise, her eyebrows raising when she realised who was standing on her doorstep.

"Robert," her voice was clipped as she tried to keep the anger out of it, "What do you want?"

"Have-"

"Lena?" Stef called, cutting his off as she came to the door, wanting to see what was keeping her wife.

"Oh, Robert."The disapproval in her voice was evident, "What are you doing here? Have you came to take another child from their home?"

"Stef-" Lena began, putting an arm on her wife's arm in an attempt to try and calm her hot tempered partner.

"No, Lena," Stef shrugged her off, "I want to know what he's doing here. We've already got four devastated children here, I want to know if he's going to hurt them more - and if we're going to have less."

Robert sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "Okay. Granted, I probably deserved that-"

"Oh, you definitely did." Stef cut in, and for once Lena didn't reprimand her, but instead nodded her head in agreement.

"Fine, I get it. So if you just let me get Callie, then-"

"Get Callie?" This time it was Lena who interrupted. "What do you mean 'get Callie'?! She's already with you, remember - you didn't even let her say goodbye to her brother."

Robert's eyes widened in surprise. "You mean she's not here?!"

"Well we'd like her to be, but since you got the court and CAP involved..." Stef shrugged.

"Stef." Lena warned again. She turned to Robert. "Look she's not here, but maybe we can help? When did you last see her?"

"Yes," Stef interjected, "And where?"

Robert shrugged, "I don't know... probably this morning when I dropped her off at school..."

"School?" Lena raised an eyebrow, "Wow, you've enrolled her in another school already?"

"What? No!" Robert shook his head, "Look I know that you think I'm a bad guy, breaking up this family and taking Callie - my daughter away from you - but I'm not. I'm not a bad guy. I just think that family should live with family and she's.. Well, she's family. That said," he quickly continued as both Stef and Lena opened their mouths to no doubt angrily interrupt, "That said, Jude is also her family too, which is one - of many - reasons why I think she should stay at Anchor Beach. The only way that she's going to go to another school is if she asks to transfer."

"Oh." Stef muttered, and visibly deflated as the fight left her. "Well good."

She sighed and glanced at Lena before turning back to Robert, "Well we haven't seen hide nor hair of her, but I suggest that you try calling her - she might be at Wyatts or visiting Rita or Daphne. You've checked her work right?"

Robert shook his head, a slightly bewildered look on his face, "No, I haven't. She wasn't in her room when I got back from work so I just... I passed that she was here. I guess I'll check back at the house, and give her a call if she's not there..."

He sighed again and rubbed the back of his neck. "Thanks, you know, for your help." He smiled apologetically at the two women, "I'm sorry for bothering you..."

"Let us know what happens." Lena asked, and he nodded. The two of them watched as he got into his car and drove off.

"She'll be okay, right Stef?" Lena looked at her wife, desperately wanting the answer her partner couldn't give. "I mean, she's probably in that house, ignoring him, or else out meeting Wyatt or Daphne... She wouldn't have run away, right? Not again... After all, she knows what happened last time. She wouldn't put us through that, not again, and it's not like any of her friends are leaving the state any time soon, and besides-"

"Love!" Stef pulled her anxious wife into a hug and pecked her on the cheek, "Relax, it's probably nothing. Robert said that he'd call us once he's heard from her or knows more. In the mean while, I'll get Mike and a couple of others to keep a look out for her when they go on their next patrol. Besides," She added, "you saw her at school today, how did she seem then?"

"No, no I didn't!" Lena's breathe hitched in her throat and her eyes widened as she grasped her wife's arm in a blind panic, "I didn't see her today Stef - she's still suspended!"

Stef froze, her mind blank as she tried to process what Lena had just told her, what that therefore meant. "Oh God." She whispered.

Callie had been missing for the best part of a day and they hadn't known.

"Oh God!" Leaping into action, Stef race up the stairs and grabbed her police vest, jacket and badge. After pausing to consider her options, she also grabbed her gun.

Running back down the stairs, she found Lena leaning against the door, exactly where she'd left her moments before.

"Okay, I'm going to go look for her, you-"

"Are coming with you. I'm coming with you." Without leaving room for argument, Lena left the house and stood by Stef's car, waiting expectantly.

Stef hesitated. She didn't want to take Lena with her, but she didn't want to waste time arguing with her and effort trying to convince her to stay. "Fine." She muttered, "Fine."

"KIDS!" She yelled, "Mama and I are going out for a bit. We have our cell phones and Mike will probably pop 'round at some point. Until then; Jude - not too much screen time, Jesus - remember to get all your homework done, Miss Thing - don't wind up your brother and B - look after them!"

And with that, she left the house, slamming the door behind her, and raced to the car. As she sat down next to her wife and started the engine, she winced at the awful feeling of deja vu she got.

...

They had been in such a state since Robert had left and Lena had realised where Callie hadn't been, that neither of them thought to track their other childrens' movement - in particular their youngest son. In the living room, Jude sat stiffly on the sofa, his expression attentive as he eavesdropped the moms' conversation and fat tears falling down his face. Silently, he crept out of the house, around the back and into Stef's car - which he was surprised to find unlocked. Sliding into the back, he covered himself with an old car blanket and forced his body to go completely still as first Lena and then Stef go into the front. Praying that he was doing the right thing, he heard the engine start and kept quiet as his moms starred driving, off to find his sister.

Please let Callie be okay. Please, oh please, can she not have done something stupid. He silently begged.
