Chapter 13: Unanswered Questions
"You really do look lovely." Edward said as we walked towards the elevator.
I blushed. "Thanks."
"Did a hurricane pass through your room by chance?" Edward raised his eyebrow.
I looked at him confused. He chuckled and I realized that he was referring to the mess in my room. Dang, he'd seen it. I tried to shut the door quickly behind me, but clearly I hadn't been quick enough.
I felt the color fill my face and suddenly it was a lot warmer in the hallway. I had no idea how to respond because here was no way in hell I was going to own up to having stressed out over what to wear for this maybe date.
"I'm just messing with you Bella. Relax." He laughed again and bumped my shoulder as the elevator door opened.
I was left reeling. I'd never seen Edward in a teasing mood. Usually he was either brooding or oddly quiet. But not today. He was as charming as they came. I remembered Emmett's words the first day I started and wondered if this is what he meant. That Edward used to be fun and charming. Maybe, just maybe he was starting to heal. The thought made me smile as we descended to the first floor.
It was a lovely day outside with bright blue skies and only a slight breeze indicating the approaching fall. The quad was littered with students lying on blankets and enjoying the warm weather that would inevitably disappear.
"I-"
"Th-"
Edward and I spoke at the same time.
"Oh I'm sorry. I didn't me to interrupt you. What were you going to say?" I said, looking to Edward's face.
Edward looked down at the grass disappearing under his feet as we walked.
"Oh, I just wanted to thank you for even agreeing to have lunch with me." He shrugged.
"Well thanks for asking. I appreciate your apology, really."
He nodded and we continued to Subway.
-PB-
I moaned when I bit into my turkey sandwich and tasted the sweet onion sauce and banana peppers. I needed this sandwich.
Edward looked at me amused from across the table.
"Good?"
"So good." I moaned again and then blushed at the sexual tone to my words. Edward must have noticed too as he chuckled and shook his head biting into his own sandwich.
"So you said earlier that you wanted to get to know each other better. Tell me about your family." I started the conversation.
I was a lot more relaxed then when he came to get me.
"Well, my dad is the president of the college here. I'm not sure if you knew that or not?" He shrugged. "It's not really a big deal, but I guess it's good to have family in such a high place. And my mom is an interior designer. You've met Emmett and you've seen Alice. I'm technically the oldest, but we're triplets so for all intents and purposes we are the same age." He chuckled.
He must've seen the surprise on my face. Because he laughed even harder. I could hardly see the resemblance between him and Emmett and to find out the they're part of triplets was even harder to believe. I'd have to take another look at Alice though, her image in my mind was kinda fuzzy.
"Yeah, everyone's always surprised, but it's true. We've got the same birthday. I swear." Edward said.
"No, no I believe you. I'm just shocked is all."
"Yeah, it's understandable. But Alice and I look more related than Em and I do." Edward shrugged. "Maybe you can meet her sometime."
I nodded.
"Your turn."
Edward took a bite of his sandwich and looked at me expectantly.
"Umm, well where to start." I put my own sandwich down and thought. "Well, my dad's a police officer, nowhere near as cool as your dad's job I'll admit, but pretty important I'd say. My mom is kinda a free spirit. She's never really been able to a hold a job, but my dad was always able to support us. I'm an only child, but I grew up with Jake and so we're practically like siblings. And yeah. Then I came here."
I took a bite of my sandwich and for a moment there was a comfortable silence.
"So, do you have a boyfriend?"
I nearly choked on the piece of sandwich I was swallowing. I reached for my drink gasping for air.
Edward tried to act concerned for me and my well being, but I could see the amusement on his face accompanied by his classic smirk whenever he was being mischievous.
I stopped my thoughts perplexed. Whenever he was being mischievous? Since when had I started noticing Edward's quirks? I chalked it up to being in the training room all the time.
"Are you okay?" Edward brought me from the depths of my mind.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I narrowed my eyes at him accusingly. It was his fault I'd nearly choked to death and he knew it.
"You never answered my question..." Edward popped a chip in his mouth and crossed his arms, looking completely at ease.
I, on the other hand was uncomfortable.
And our maybe date had been going so well...
"What if I don't want to answer?" I retorted.
"Oh c'mon, Bella just tell me. It's not that big of a deal."
"No." I folded my arms. I was not ready to reveal the whole story behind my dating history. Not to Edward at least.
"Why not?" Edward demanded.
"Just drop it, Edward please."
"Why?"
I looked into Edward's eyes and all I saw was amusement. He was enjoying watching me squirm.
I felt a pang go through my chest. I should've known better. Everything was about power to him. This is what this was, he wanted to see how far he could push me.
I got up from the table.
"Hey, wait where are you going?" Edward's voice was softer now and less demanding.
I started walking out.
"Hold on, Bella. I'm sorry I shouldn't have pushed you like that. It wasn't nice."
"I'm through with you're apologies Edward." I said, exasperated.
I turned to face him and I started, surprised. I hadn't realized he was so close, close enough for me to see the hazel flecks in his eyes. Suddenly, those flecks were too close.
I felt the warm pressure of his lips on mine.
Well hello, I'm sorry it has been so long! Time has slipped between my fingers and then I've had writers block. I kept trying to write this chapter and it just didn't seem right. So, I rewrote it again and finally felt content with this more playful version of Edward. But I suppose we shall have to see how Bells reacts to this new development. I don't really think I'll be able to post a chapter next Wednesday bc I'll be out of town, but we shall see! Thanks to all who have reviewed and left kind remarks and stuck with my story! it means alot! Until the next Wednesday!
