Chapter 14:

Tension

BPOV

Edward's lips were soft as they moved against my unyielding ones and I felt rage beginning to overtake my initial surprise. I pushed Edward back, placing both of my hands on his sculpted chest.

How dare he?

Edward looked at me with wide eyes and I glared at him, unable to form a complete sentence through my anger and shock.

"Bella?" Edward's voice sounded so vulnerable, but I didn't care. He wasn't my boyfriend, we weren't even really friends. He had no right to kiss me. Anger bubbled within in me, seeking a release, so I did the only thing I could think of.

I slapped him.

My hand stung from the impact and I watched as a red patch in the shape of my hand began forming on Edward's otherwise flawless cheek. Edward clasped his cheek in shock, but I turned away before I could see anything else. I felt tears begin to form as I made my way outside, not bothering to look back. I didn't care. I just knew I had to get away.

I stomped across campus only semi aware of where I was going. Everything was blurry as I blinked back tears. Somehow, I made it back to my dorm room and I knocked on the door rather than try to open the door with my key. Angela opened the door on the second knock, shocked.

"Bella? What's wrong?"

She opened the door wider and pulled me into a hug as I stepped in the room.

"I'm going to kick his ass." She muttered.

She sat me down on my bed and turned around to look at her bed. I followed her gaze and wasn't surprised to find a rather sheepish looking Ben putting his shirt back on.

"Hey, Ben." I hiccuped.

"Hey, Bella. I hope you feel better." He nodded as he shared a glance with Angela. "I'll see you later."

Angela simply nodded before turning back to me.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Her voice was soft. She reached over to my desk to grab some tissues and handed me a few.

"Not really." I mumbled.

"Spill."

I took a second to collect my thoughts. I knew Angela was right. It would make me feel better to talk to someone even though it was the last thing I wanted to do right now.

I let out a sigh.

"He kissed me." I said, simply.

She nodded. "Okay. What happened before that?"

"We were talking." I paused. "He asked me about Jake."

"He knew about him?" Her voice was laced with surprise.

"Well, not about him specifically, but he asked me if I had a boyfriend. And of course, I didn't want to tell him."

Angela nodded.

"But he kept pushing me. And so I got up to leave, but then..." I trailed off.

"He kissed you." Angela finished.

I nodded.

"It just made me so angry. I mean, who does he think he is? And he never clarified that this was a date. Because if he had, I wouldn't have agreed to it. I can't date him. Ever."

In the back of my mind, a part of me wouldn't let me forget that I had been glad that he hadn't clarified on our lunch outing. It had meant that it was absolutely fine for me to accept his invitation. And not only was I angry with him, for making me want to help him and for being so attractive, I was angry with myself. I had fallen for it.

I should've known better.

Angela sighed, before sitting beside me.

I looked up at her. "I can't have feelings for him. It's against the rules."

(((((((((OOOOOO)))))))))))

I unlocked the training room door and walked across the hall to Billy' office. I was disappointed to find his usual chair empty. It had been a few days since I'd gotten to talk him in private. It was difficult to talk to him down on the field, because there was always so much going on.

I headed back across the hall, and stopped when I saw Edward sitting on his seat. I mentally rolled my eyes. When in the world had it become his seat? I continued into the room, refusing to meet Edward's eyes. I glanced at the clock. He was five minutes early. This couldn't be good. There was an awkward silence as we both waited for the other to speak.

"Your five minutes early." I started, refusing to look at him. "That's a first." I scoffed. Edward didn't say anything. I sighed and sat down on my usual perch, overlooking the room, pulling some forms onto my lap that Billy had asked me to go through last week.

"Well, you know the drill. Heat. Stretches. Ice." I stated bluntly, glancing over the first of the forms.

"Bella, I want to talk to you." Edward demanded.

"I, however, don't want to talk to you Edward." I huffed, finally looking up. I met his gaze. "I want you to heat your leg, do your stretches, ice it and get out."

I returned to the form in my hand.

"At least hear me out? Please."

"Just leave it alone Edward." I said, through gritted teeth. I just wanted to pretend that lunch had never happened and then we could move on.

"I'm not going to just let it go, Bella," Edward pressed.

I looked up to see Edward making his way over to me.

A voice came from around the corner. "Knock, knock."

I groaned as none other than Jake came through the open door.

"Everything alright in here?" Jake asked, glancing between Edward and I. "It sounded loud in the hallway."

"Everything's fine, Jake. Is there something you need? Billy's not here." I sighed exasperated at the growing situation. I felt uneasy having the two of them in the same room. I hoped that whatever Jake needed would be quick, so he could leave.

"Yeah, I know. I actually stopped by to see you." Jake said to me but his gaze, however, was on Edward. I could see the silent question in his eyes that was almost a challenge. Edward was looking Jake up and down, sizing him up, and raising an eyebrow at his words.

Jake shoved his hands into his pockets. "I wanted to thank you for the other night." Hefinally turned his attention to me, either not caring about Edward or he'd determined that he wasn't an immediate threat. Edward's eyebrows rose. I knew what it sounded like, and I cursed Jake for phrasing it like that.

I grimaced. "You're welcome Jake."

There was an awkward silence and Jake, Edward and I glanced at each other. I wanted to say something, but my mind had all of sudden gone blank.

"Jacob Black." Jake stuck his hand out for Edward to shake his hand.

Edward looked at Jake's hand with disdain.

"Edward...Cullen." It might have been my imagination, but it seemed that Edward had placed extra emphasis on Cullen.

Jake let his hand drop awkwardly. "Well, it's uhh, nice to meet you." Jake was looking very confused. "Did I interrupt something?"

"Yes."

"No."

Edward and I spoke at the same time.

"It's fine. Was there anything else you needed?" I asked, anxious to get him out of here, before he got into some sort of territorial standoff with Edward.

"No." Jake hesitated as if he didn't really want to leave.

"Well, I have work to do, so this might not be the best time to talk." I hoped Jake could take a hint, but apparently he couldn't.

"Work. With him?" Jake asked, sounding skeptical.

"Yes." I worked very hard to keep my voice steady.

"What's it to you anyway?" Edward demanded. I glared at him, but he wasn't looking at me.

"Bella?" Billy came into the training room. He looked surprised to see the three of us. "Hey, you decided to have a party without me?" Billy chuckled, looking questioningly at Jake.

"Course not, Billy. You'd be the first person I'd invite. Jake was actually about to leave." I met Jake's gaze sternly, letting him know that I was serious.

"Oh, well don't let me stop you. I'll see you later son." Billy patted Jake on the back. "I just wanted to go over something with Bella."

I nodded. "Yeah, Edward was just going to heat his leg." I smiled, hoping that it didn't look off.

Edward crossed his arms and smiled smugly at Jake, who looked put out. "See you around...Jake." Edward waved as Jake frowned. Jake turned and left without another word. Billy looked at Edward curiously, but seemed to dismiss it because he turned to me and pointed at the stack of papers in his hand.

He explained that he wanted me to go through them and get rid of any that were more than ten years old, because they weren't needed anymore. I assured him, I'd take care of it and once Billy had left, I sighed.

"Well, that was fun."

I jumped. I'd forgotten that Edward was still in the room, heating his leg.

I rolled my eyes, climbing back onto my perch. "I wouldn't exactly call that fun."

"Is he your boyfriend?"

I glared at Edward. "We are not going through this again."

Edward heaved a sigh. "I'm sorry, Bella. Please, hear me out?"

I exhaled, eyes closed. "Fine. You've got five minutes."
