soooo sorry . things have been a little crazy at college
The next day when Maura arrives at school she couldn't find the pair of brown eyes looking back at her in front of the school building and she feels a bit sad and disappointed. She had come to looking forward to their everyday routine. Finally giving up on finding Jane, Maura makes her way to her class
The class was about to end when some of class mates stared whispering something, she could only make out a few words "she`s here …. I saw her standing by the door …. Looking through the glass… creepy …. With her … and wild curly hair…" Maura didn't pay any more attention to the whispers and focused again on the lesson.
With the ball ring everyone started leaving the class; Maura's eyes fell on Jane standing outside the class in her usual posture, leaning on the wall. She finally understood what the others were talking about, it was Jane, and she was her for a while
"Hi" Jane said with a bit of embarrassment
"Hi" Maura replied with a smile "you know, you could have came inside" Maura pointed toward the class behind her, Jane was nervous and Maura could see it
"Yeah, maybe next time" she lied "anyway, I …um… can I talk to you?" Jane's voice was pleading and so were her eyes, something Maura never thought she`d see in Jane
"Of course" they were beginning to walk when they heard someone calling from behind
"Hey!" they both turned and Maura noticed Barry headed their way
"Berry, how are you doing?" he nodded toward Maura with a smile and fixed his eyes on Jane "oh, this is…" Maura was about to introduce them when berry spoke again
"Hey Jane, whats up?" Jane offered him a weak smile
"hey, frost" Maura was a bit embarrassed when she understood that they knew each other "how`s basketball?" Maura couldn't help but sense the sadness in Jane's tone as she spoke
"It's good, not the same without you. Ever think of coming back?"
"I don't think so buddy" Maura could see how glassy Jane's eyes turned before she cleared her throat "ok, so we should get going. See you frost"
"See you later Jane" they both knew that there was no later and that Jane was just trying to avoid the subject, especially in front of Maura
"About yesterday" Jane started, avoiding Maura's gaze "I wanted to say I'm sorry if my mother bothered you with-" Maura cut Jane off with a wave of her hand and a worm smile
"Jane" she said quietly, holding Jane's gaze with a caring one "you don't have to do that with me" she reassured quietly. they both stood there in comfortable silent for a few seconds , Jane kept staring at Maura at first in an awe but then fallowed Maura's gaze looking form above the building`s roof . It had become their secret place, they both knew that no one will bother them her and that they could say anything they want with no one to judge them. "I met Jo Friday" Maura started again, cutting the silent "she`s adorable!" Maura turned to Jane with a huge smile on her face as she remembered the small dog
"Yeah" Jane breathed out when she felt the weight of their previous subject being lifted off her shoulder, Maura was giving her an easy out "yeah, I've had it for some time now, I couldn't stand her at first and a name like 'Jo Friday'? I mean come on! But Korsak insisted and she started to grow on me" Jane said with a light tone and even giggled when she mentioned the name of her dog.
Maura was listening to Jane with a smile plastered on her face, Jane was finally letting her guard down again and that made her happy. Her happiness quickly vanished to fear when she heard that name drop from Jane's lips and a flow of memorized come back rushing on her and hitting her like a train 'Korsak' she`s sure that that`s the name that Jane said , right?
Find a man named Korsak and give him the notebook .ok?
"Hellooo, earth to Maura. Is anyone there" Maura blinked after she realized that she drifted and didn't hear anything that Jane said afterwards "seriously, you keep having this sort of time-out thing? It's very tempting to prank you when you're like that" Jane said with a giggle
"who`s Korsak?" it came out of nowhere, Jane looked at Maura's eyes and she can see that Maura is dead serious and won't be taking a joke for an answer right now.
"Korsak? He…. he`s kind of family friend" jane answered ackwordly. Maura simply broke eye contact and stared at her shoes. "hey" Jane said trying to get Maura`s attention "is everything OK?"
"Yes, i`m sorry I just remembered something." Maura answered with a weak smile. After that the pair kept talking about everything and nothing, melting the tension that started forming earlier until the bill finally rang and they both said their goodbye, confident they will see each other after school.
"Do you want me to walk you home?" Jane asked as they both made their way out of school property
"Yes!" Maura answered too quickly and then turned a light shad of pink "I mean no! I mean... if you want to, if you don't its ok either, you don't have to walk with me I know the way from here an-" Maura started blabbering nervously, leaving Jane chuckling. it was amazing how a smile thing, done by Maura could be so funny and cute at the same time Jane thought before she stopped Maura when she felt she was about to have a panic attack
"Maura, it's OK! I want to walk you home. Besides, it would be fun to see your house" Jane reassured, Maura nodded shyly and started walking with Jane "so, why doesn't the driver pick you up after school?"
"Oh, I asked him not to. I like to walk home after school, it gives me time to think and…" Maura looking at her shoes again too embarrassed to complete her sentence
"and it gives you some extra time away from home" Jane completed quietly as she walked looking at the clouds in the sky "it`s ok. I mean look at me, I go to school every day just to have some time away from home, so I guess what I'm trying to say is that I understand why you do it"
"You too, huh?" Maura, who was looking at Jane while she spoke, returned her sight to the road with a bettered chuckle
" at first it was just out of habit, go to school and come back home but then I realized that I actually like going to school if it meant that I won't be spending every moment of every single day babied by my ma" Jane shrugged
" I'm not even sure why I do it" Maura said with a weak smile " I just like being outside home, I don't feel so much isolated when I'm outside" it was now Jane's turn to look at the blond as she entered into another trance she`s hurting
"Do you feel that when you`re with me?" she said quietly
"Huh?" Maura came back from her trance not understanding what Jane was saying
"Isolated… do you feel that with me?" Jane explained
" no" Maura as a matter of fact before she even understood what she just said and a smile spread across her lips when it finally sink in
"Good" Jane smiled back at the blond with a nod and turned again to the road
" so" Maura jumped in front of Jane , walking backwards in front of her with a smile on her face and her hands holding into the laces of her backpack " why didn't you tell me you`re a basketball player?" Jane gave an embarrassed smile before she ran her hand into her hair
" I'm not really a basketball player" she said with a nervous chuckle " I quit basketball a while ago, there`s a little story behind it" Jane looked raised her head at the sky again, feeling the faint sun ray on her face and taking a deep breath filling her lungs with fresh air
" you come to not like basketball?" Maura stopped walking making Jane stop as well flowing her eyebrows, trying her best to understand what Jane meant but with no luck
"No it's not like that but… I haven't touched a ball in a while, either" Jane simply shrugged with a smile and started walking again and passing Maura who was still confused a bit
"In that case" Maura started walking again and picked up her steps to walk in front of Jane again "would you like to play basketball with me tomorrow after school?" Maura saw the look of uncertainty in Jane's eyes so she assured her again "I'm actually quit athletic, I'll be waiting tomorrow for you in the court tomorrow after school ok?" Maura said as she entered the house`s gate
"No, I'm…" Jane tried to protest but Maura wasn't giving her any chance to
"Let's play some basketball" Maura said again with a reassuring smile and disappeared into the house. She didn't want to leave Jane, but she also had to make sure not to give Jane any chance to turn her down please don't hate me. Jane needs to get out of her shell and maraud was determent to do so. And look who`s trying to help Maura let out a snort and walked further into her house
It was raining non-stop the next day, it was time for school but Jane was still on the couch watching TV, Angela knew what this weather did to her daughter`s hands and somehow it seemed as though both of them had an agreement to not talk about it and just let it be and if that meant that Jane won't be going to school today then so be it
When her brother came home , Jane was still glued to the TV screen but overhearing Frankie telling their mom that the rain just got worst made her gaze drift to the window . Maura must have gone home she thought. Still she couldn't help but wonder …
And after almost half an hour of debating wither she should go out and check for her friend or just stay here in the warm comfort of her home Jane got up " I`m going out for a while, ok?" she threw behind her shoulder as she put her coat on
"Ok, don't forget your umbrella" Angela knew better than to argue with her daughter, not in this weather
She wouldn't be, would she?
When Jane finally made it to the court , she found it abandon , she was about to turn and head home when she saw blond locks under the shooting hood " Maura!" she shouted before running to a completely socked Maura to find her with a basket ball in her hands . Maura drowning into her own world that she didn't even notice Jane's present until she felt Jane's coat on her shoulder "are you an idiot! It's raining, she should have gone home!" Jane shouted
"But ...we would have missed each other if you had came when I was gone" she said with a smile, Jane however was still pissed
"There was no proof that I would come, was there!?" she shot back
" but you did come" Maura's smile never felted " you always help me, so I wanted to at least be able to play basketball with you" Maura said with her eyes falling to the ball in her hands " to return the favor"
"What are we going to do in this rain?" Jane sighed and looked at the rainy sky
" then let me see you take a shot" Maura offered "I want to see it , I've never seen a shot from a basketball player up close" Maura raised both her arms still holding the ball " you take a position like this and shoot, right? Unlike me, you won't shoot underhand, right?"
Jane held out her hand for Maura to throw her the ball, Maura's face lit up and throw the ball gently to Jane. Jane stared at the ball for a few seconds before she started bouncing it altering between her right hand and left with each bounce. she never showed the pain that it was causing her, she tried to left her arms but failed and let the ball slip from her hands and into the ground "my right arm doesn't go up, something happened when I was in my third year in middle school and damaged my right shoulder, my arm won't go any higher than my shoulder. I can't play basketball anymore" she said quietly and fell to the ground
"I ….I …I'm sorry" Maura said taking a few steps away from Jane
"Maura" Jane started but Maura kept going
"I ... I keep troubling you" Maura kept walking away from Jane that got up and reached out for her "I wanted to help but..." Maura let out a pained snore "you can't really help if you`re me right? …. Only make it worst" Maura shrugged before turning around to leave
"hey!" she called after her , was not going to let this happen this time, not this time, not ever . "Is that all we do? Just run away?" Jane whispered "is that all we ever do?" she shouted now when Maura took another step "I don't want to do it anymore!" she shouted again.
"Why would you run?" Maura said with a bettered chuckle you have everything I ever dreamt of …. Why would you run? "You can`t runs away unless you have something to run from … I can never run away" Maura held her hand out, looking at the rain drops bouncing off her palm "never ever…. No matter how hard I tried" it was barley a whisper. Taking a deep breath and letting it out, Maura turned to Jane who was still on the ground and tried a weak smile "sorry, this was supposed to cheer you up and not …..This" she said kindly. Jane simply shrugged
Maura walked up to her holding out a hand to help her up, Jane was about to take Maura's hand when she saw the scars on her hand and pulled away again, as if embarrassed to let Maura see it . Maura however did not waver and kept her hand out waiting patiently for Jane's. Jane placed her hand on her knee for leverage to stand up when Maura snatched her hand between hers and pulled Jane up. Jane was still at shock when she was finally standing and her hand still being held in those warm ones of Maura's. Maura's thumbs creased over Jane's scar on the back of her hand for a few seconds before Maura raised her head to Jane and quietly said "scars means we survived"
"Ma would kill me if I went home looking like this" Jane said as she looked down at her soaked form
"Then let's go to mine. You can barrow some of my cloths" Maura stated and started walking
"But… what about your parents? Wont you get yelled at or something?" Jane fallowed Maura
"You don't have to worry about that" Maura said quietly
"What do you mean?" Jane turned her head to look at Maura as they both walked together to Maura's
"I kinda have the house for myself right now" Maura said with a smile after a thought
"Cool" Jane said with surprise and excitement written all over her face
" yeah….cool" Maura offered the best smile she could master although she didn't understand what was 'coo' about being left alone and neglected like this
"You know… you haven't changed that much" Jane broke the silent
"How is that?" Maura said politely
"You`re still weird" Jane gave a proud smile to her friend
so, what do you think? review please ;)
