Maura was running late for class. she`d stayed up all night studying for the exam that she over slept this morning- something she never did- and as she made her way through the see of teens in the halls with her books in one hand while the other held a paper up for a last moment review . her lips were moving but no sounds were coming out of them, her eyes quickly scanning the paper that she didn't even see the boy until she bumped into him, sending the paper flaying in the air while her books fell to the ground.
Maura wobbled one her feet taking a few steps back trying to regain her composure, she hissed a quick sorry without even looking at the boy before knelling down and collecting her books, when she got up to her full height again she finally got a good look at the boy who was holding her paper and offering it with a smile. She couldn't help the small gasp of air; she knows him or used to know him that is.
"Are you ok?" he said with a giggle. Maura shook her head slightly trying to kick out the fussy memories that came to mind.
"Yes, no, I mean yeah I'm ok" she said trying to organize her thoughts once again and reaching out for the paper
"Hey, you`re Maura right?" he said as he recognized her, Maura froze in her place but she managed to nod with smile "I'm mike, we share the same math class?" he offered hoping for her to remember him
"Oh, of course hi" she said politely "I'm sorry I wasn't really seeing where I was walking I-"Maura started talking nervously
"No, its fine no harm done" he chuckled "I was meaning to talk to you actually" he said nodding to himself. Maura stayed quit waiting for him to speak again "oh! uhhh we were hoping that you could join our math club. There is this really important competition coming up and it would be great if we could have you on our team" he said putting the best smile he had hopping for her to except.
"oh, I- " Maura was really excited , she really did love math and being wanted in a club made her felt happy, she was about to say yes when she looked into his eyes again and she could almost hear what he said to her years ago
We wouldn't have taken it after you touched it, Doyle
Maura could still see the smirk that played on his face and felt anger bubble up inside her, her but her inner cheek to keep her from bursting at him. She tried to calm herself before saying "I'm sorry but I'm late, I need to go" she quickly walked past him leaving him confused and embarrassed.
She wanted to tell him that she wasn't interested in joining the club but she knew that she can't lie. She was interested, she wanted to be a part of a club and she loved math. Pushing the thoughts of the club out of her mind Maura took a calming breath before focusing on her paper once again.
The exam went ok, Maura let out a relived sigh before leaving the class, and she headed to her locker wanting to change the books for the next period. Opening her locker Maura noticed a small envelope fall to the ground with the name 'Maura' written on it. Maura placed the books in the locker before reaching for the envelope. Nothing was written on it except for her name in a neat hand writing Maura knitted her eyebrow together trying to remember where she saw hand writing like it. Opening the envelope Maura read the two sentences that were written inside
Why didn't you join the club? That guy suddenly got nice and tried to get friendly with you, he was disgusting, wasn't he?
Maura`s eyes went wide and started franticly looking for someone she knew wouldn't find. Maura read the letter again and again, swallowing hard against the lump that started forming in her throat. No it wasn't true, she wasn't disgusted by him. But why was she so mad at him? He didn't do anything, he simply asked politely for her to join their club and she was only mad because he was making her late for her class, yeah that's it. Right?
Maura stood half convinced of what she finally concluded of her encounter with 'mike' with this burning urge to see Jane. She didn't know why but for some reason, every time she tried to place where she saw a similar hand writing her thoughts went to Jane. She still had sometime before the next class started, maybe she could just go and say hi to Jane and try and forget all about this creepy letter.
Reaching the roof, Maura was waiting for Jane's wild curls to finally come into view but instead she was met with a grown man with gray hair looking back at her. He was leaning with his elbow resting on the short wall behind him
"Sorry, I know no one is allowed here, I'll just go" Maura said nervously as she pointed to the doo behind her shoulder and turned to leave
" You don't have to leave Maura" Maura span around at the mention of her name to find the man standing straight with a warm smile on his face, Maura felt a chill run down her spin at the way he said her name
"How do you know my name?" Maura stood firmly, refusing to be inseminated by this man.
"Well Jane told me all about you" he said as if it was the most obvious thing, Maura however couldn't help but pick up the weird vive that was coming out of this man.
"Jane?" she said not taking her eyes off of him and she was not letting her guard down just yet
"Yeah, she won't stop talking about how you`re two are close and that you`re the only one that she trust to let her guard around. You know how she is" there was something about the way her said those words that made her feel as if he was treating her as something inferior than him
"Well I'm sorry but I don't believe that Jane ever mentioned you MR…" Maura said trailing off for him to fill in
"Doctor, its Dr. Hoyt" he introduced himself offering her a hand, Maura eyed his palm before reaching and shaking his hand
"A doctor?" she said still eyeing him as they shook hands. He didn't do or say anything inappropriate but still she felt uneasy about him
"Yeah, I suppose you saw my work on Jane's hands?" he said raising his hand up and pointing to his palm. Maura nodded after she finally decided that it was ok to let her guard down "she still dent talk about it does she?" he sounded like he was concerned
Maura shook her head before finally saying a simple 'no' Maura looked at her shoes but he kept staring at her "I was looking forward to seeing Jane here but I suppose this trip wasn't a lose either since I finally got to meet the lovely Maura isles" he said with a sly smirk "I do hope that we be friends" he said taking a step into Maura's space "just like you are with jan-"
"Hoyt!" the horrifying howl made Maura turn around to find Jane standing at the door a bottle of water in one hand and a face of sheer fear
" hey Janie, I'm glad you could make it before I left, how are you doing?" he said making his was slowly to where Jane was standing and passing Maura who stood unsure about what was happening
"What did you do?" Maura never heard so much fear in Jane's voice but Hoyt ignored her and kept talking
"it`s been a long time, I think you might have gotten taller than I remember" kept walking up to Jane
" what did you do?" Jane breathed out defeated by fear when he was finally standing in front of the fear was gone just as fast as it came , she was not going to be inseminated by him, no , she can`t let him do this . Even if she was scared as hell, she would stay strong until he was gone.
fear and anger battled inside Jane, she hasn't forgot what he is capable, what he did of but she was still angry for what he made her go through, if it wasn't for her she would have been normal, she would be just like everybody else what he did and fighting these emotions that she kept bubbled up inside was killing her, physically knocking the air out of her longs. "Tell me what you did to her" anger finally showed in her voice
"Nothing, we we`re simply introducing ourselves, isn't that right Maura" he turned his head slightly to the dictation where Maura was a few feet behind them but he didn't give her the chance to answer
"but now that I have you here Janie, there`s something I've been dying to ask you" he raised his hand and placed it on Jane's cheek, Jane's eyes pinpointed before they dilated, she froze the bottle sliding easily through her loose grip and all she could do was shake the second his hand made contact with her cheek "why haven't you been answering my letters?" he said firmly "Why would you even think to do such a thing? I`ve been quite tolerant lately have I not?" he leaned in to whisper into Jane's ear
"Perhaps I need to take some time to reeducate you… in that little basement I kept just for you"
Jane wasn`t at the roof anymore, she was in the darkness again, with the searing pain in both her hands. Everything hurt, even breathing hurt, pain is all there is, it's the only thing that reminded her that she was still alive.
The next thing that Jane heard was a shove and Maura's voice apologizing and saying they had class "I understand, I should be going anyway. It was nice meeting you Maura .I'd expect to see you both soon" Hoyt`s replay came and then he was gone
I can't believe I just shoved him! Maura thought mortified by what she just did to a man that was old enough to be her father but Jane looked so scared, terrified of him, I had to do something Maura turned to Jane who had finally stopped trembling.
"Maura?" Jane finally spoke when she found her voice
"Yes?"
"Hoyt, he…uhh... he really didn't do or say something thing weird did he?" Jane raised her head and met Maura's eyes with worried ones
Maura frowned trying to think of something and sensing that her uneasiness was for a reason "no, he really was just introducing himself"
"Good" Jane breathed out heavily. "I have to go there`s somewhere I need to be. I'll see you after school ok?" Jane said leaning and grapping her bottle
"Ok?" Maura really was at lost and didn't know what to say
Jane forced herself to 'walk' down the stairs despite the urge she had to run
Anger that was radiating from as she made it to the front gate and started looking right and left until she found it. Crossing the street, Jane walked angrily to the car, raising her left arm and throwing the bottle with all her might at the car before reaching the car that now two men were coming out of.
Jane walked to the older man with fury and punched him in the face, before the younger man grabbed her by her midsection from behind.
"NO! let me go asshole!" Jane said trying to break out of his grip before she turned her attention back to the older man holding his bleeding nose " you promised!" Jane shouted again with all her might "you gave me your word Korsak! You said that I won't see him again! You said that it was over. LET ME GO!" she squirmed again trying to break free
"Fuck!" Jane yelled again in frustration
"Jane calm down" Korsak said holding his hands out as her approached her carefully
"Calm down? Calm down?! Really Korsak?"
Thanking gad that the day was finally over, Maura headed out when she heard someone calling her name , she turned to find mike quickly making his way to her
"Hey" he said out of breath when he finally caught up with her
"Hello again" Maura replied politely
"So, did you have a chance to think about what I told you?" he asked hopeful that she might finally accept. Maura was thinking what she should tell him, she really didn't get the chance to organize her thoughts, what was she going to say? I can't join the math club although I really want to because you were a jerk when you knew me as a kid?
"You know?" Maura stopped walking when she spotted Jane and turned to look at him "It was really a long day for me and I would like to think this over and I'll make sure to tell you my answer before the week is out if that is ok with you?" Maura replied
" yeah , sure" Maura could see that he was disappointed but didn't say anything and started walking " hey" Maura turned again toward him " wanna walk you home?"
"No thank you, I'm walking with my friend but thank you anyway"
"Cool, I'll see you around" he said but Maura had already walked away
what do you think?
