Chapter Two
The ride down to the station was quiet on the whole, initial polite chatter only being punctuated by the sniffs and occasional sobs of Piper sat in the back seat. Alex eyed the girl in the rear view mirror as they made their way through the busy evening traffic, drawn by her delicate blue eyes and the soft features of her face. Despite the obvious immediate upset she had captivating quality which held the cops attention. A fact which hadn't gone unnoticed by her partner.
"Hey Vause, how's it going with Sylvie, your girlfriend?", she deliberately drew out the last word making sure that all of the cars occupants were left in no doubt of the brunettes relationship status. Alex inwardly winced at the words and at the fact she had been caught staring at the young blonde. Things had not been going well with Sylvie for a while, sure she was fun and good in bed but she was hard work. Jealousy had never been a quality Alex liked in a person and as their relationship had developed it was apparent that Sylvie was a very jealous person.
"Fine"
"Fine, is that the best you can offer up?"
"Oh i don't know...nice then. Jeez she's one of your friends, you should know!"
"She hot in bed? Man I bet she is, she into some freaky shit?"
"Yeah like im going to discuss that with you!" Alex let out with a throaty chuckle
"I'm gonna take that as a yes!"
Alex countered this statement with a traded mark raised eyebrow.
The two cops had been partners for the past three years and they had instantly become firm friends. Their personalities matched, their sense of humour matched and their lifestyles matched. Put quite simply they got each other. This is why Nicky was more than alert to the tell tale signs of one of her closest friends checking out the girl in the back seat.
Pipers mind was in a daze, the journey to the police station had passed in a blur as she tried to process the events of the last half hour. What she had lost, how stupid she had been and worst of all how she would go about explaining this to her parents. They had had their reservations about Pipers ability to cope in the city, away from their protective presence, and the actions of her first hour in the city will have done nothing to dispel their theory. Every time she thought of having to phone them a small, involuntary sob fell from her lips.
"We're here, get out", the abrupt Brooklyn accent drawing Piper immediately from her thoughts. She looked up to see the wild haired cop at the now open door of the patrol car. Piper followed her blindly into the station unaware that her taller colleague was no longer with them.
"Whatcha got Nichols? Another shoplifter?"
"Nah, had her bag pinched, Vause will be dealing with it, I'm outta here"
"Hey blondie, in here", she held the door open to a small sparse room containing a table and two chairs. Piper entered and took a seat. "th..th..thank you" she managed to stammer out.
"don't thank me, thank Vause, she's the one doing here bit for community policing", with that she turned on her heel and left the blonde alone to her thoughts again.
The door burst open and the brunette came through carrying two steaming cups of coffee and some doughnuts she had managed to liberate from the staff room.
"Here you go kid, figured you could use something sweet after the afternoon you've had" Alex settled the drinks and doughnuts down on the table and took her seat opposite Piper. For the first time Piper looked up at Alex and stared at her face on, she was taken back by how beautiful she was from the perfectly sculpted eyebrows to the hot secretary glasses to the masses of dark hair tied up and back in a neat bun. A small smile graced Alexs lips, softening her features further. Piper offered a small smile back, " thank you", she said, genuinely taken back by the kind gesture.
Alex took down the details of the incident, Pipers lost belongings and contact details. Alex was usually very good in separating her true feelings from her work persona but as she wrote she felt inexplicably sad for the young woman sat in front of her.
"Right then, well I've got all that I need, well be in touch if we find your bag" .
"ok thank you" Piper said as the two made their way out of the room, "how do I get back from here?"
"You've not even registered in yet?" Alex enquired.
"no"
"you got your dorm details?"
Fortunately Piper had the paperwork in her purse, she handed over a wad of crumpled papers and the cop scanned them for the relevant details.
"ok, you're not far from here, my shifts done now so let me go get changed and I'll walk that way with you".
Alex emerged from behind the counter in a pair of black skinny jeans, black band t-shirt and a battered black leather jacket, her hair now loose and falling haphazardly over her shoulders. If Piper thought she looked hot in here uniform, off the clock Alex was certainly hotter.
The pair walked through the now busy streets of Manhattan in silence, Piper trying to take in her new surroundings and Alex casting an occasional kindly gaze over towards Piper.
"Hey kid, I just need to call in here" she said as they drew close to a small Walgreens. Alex picked up a basket and began placing a few small items in, cereal, cookies, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, apples, noodles and some milk. She quickly paid and they resumed their journey.
"Right this is you kid".
Piper stared up at the main entrance to the university, a sudden wave of panic coming over her. "and these are for you", Alex said as she handed over the Walgreens carrier bag, "it's not much, but it'll see you right for a couple of days, until you find your feet".
"Thank you, thank you so much, for everything, I, I can't pay you for these"
"it's ok kid, just be careful, and have fun!" Alex smiled over at the forlorn blonde and with that turned and walked off into the night.
