Here's the epilogue! Thank you so much for your wonderful comments and for giving this story a chance!

EPILOGUE:

Elizabeth gazed out the frost-laced window of her bedchamber at Longbourn, watching delicate snowflakes drift down from leaden winter skies. Today, the parson would join her and Mr. Darcy in the bonds of matrimony at last.

Her breath caught at the thought. After enduring grim trials that would daunt the staunchest of hearts, joy had awakened in her breast on this radiant morn.

Mrs. Bennet bustled into the room, fussing with the details of Elizabeth's gown. "Such a pity we could not have the ceremony at Netherfield, with its grand ballroom and that lovely old chapel!" She sighed, loudly. "But after the west wing's collapse, I suppose it's for the best."

Elizabeth smiled, though an uneasy sensation stirred within. The crumbling ruins of Netherfield stood as a reminder of the shadowy forces they had narrowly escaped. But today, of all days, she chose to push aside memories of the darkness that had threatened to devour them and focus on the light that had prevailed.

Jane came next with a handful of pins for Elizabeth's hair.

"After all we have endured together, I can scarce believe this day has come at last!" Jane said, smiling.

"We have weathered storms that would daunt the bravest of souls," Elizabeth replied. "And emerged to find love awaiting us on the other side."

Though joy flooded her heart, Elizabeth knew shadows waited, still hungry to regain entry into this world. She briefly took her sister's hand, drawing comfort from the warmth and light kindled within. Together they had triumphed against grim death; and together, come what may, they would prevail.

Soon, arm in arm with Jane, Elizabeth descended the stairs to the parlor. Mr. Darcy turned as she entered, his breath catching at her beauty. In two swift strides, he was at her side, embracing.

"You look radiant, my love," he whispered. "On this day and always, my heart and hand belong to you."

Elizabeth gazed up into his stormy eyes, reassured by the depths of devotion she found there. "As mine are yours. What trials may come, we shall face them side by side."

Mr. Darcy kissed her forehead gently. "Together we have grasped a joy that will light our way, no matter how dark the road ahead seems." With playful affection, he added, "Though I daresay even my aunt Catherine will have to reconcile herself to you as mistress of Pemberley, as surely as England shall rally to overcome Bonaparte's forces."

Elizabeth laughed, her heart swelling with love for this man who had sacrificed everything to stand by her side. Together, their light would cleanse the shadows that yet hungered.

The parson began the ceremony as snowflakes drifted down, blanketing the countryside in white. As Elizabeth gazed into Darcy's eyes and pledged her vows, joy flooded her being. She clung to the warmth of his hands, focusing on the light they had grasped together.

At the conclusion of their vows, Darcy drew her into his arms and kissed her deeply. Elizabeth returned his ardor, heedless of their guests' indulgent smiles.

Lydia's piercing whisper cut through the tender moment. "Well, they certainly won't waste any time producing an heir for Pemberley!"

"Hush, you foolish girl!" Mrs. Bennet chided. With effusive delight she added, "And to think, if all goes well Jane will soon follow—I daresay she and Mr. Bingley shall wed by spring!"

Mr. Bingley flushed scarlet at this pronouncement. Though an ugly rope of scarring marred his cheek, he smiled. Jane leaned into him, radiating joy and contentment.

At the edges of her awareness, Elizabeth heard her guests' commentary, but in this moment all else receded; there was only Darcy's tender embrace, the warmth of his lips pressed to hers, and the wild hammering of her heart.

The wedding breakfast proceeded amid laughter and cheer. But as the candles guttered low, touches of darkness encroached, causing Elizabeth fleeting moments of alarm. The baying of hounds in the distance became, for a heartbeat, the unearthly howls of creatures best left unnamed. A draft tracing icy fingers down her spine felt suddenly like the chilling caress of oblivion awaiting its chance.

Sensing her disquiet, Darcy gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. With his touch, the waking nightmares receded, and she gazed round at their guests with warmth and joy. Jane smiled at Elizabeth across the table. Mr. Bingley's eyes were soft with adoration as he glanced at Jane.

Surrounded by those she held most dear, the radiance awakened in Elizabeth's heart could never be extinguished. Love had triumphed against grim death. And in her soul Elizabeth knew, as dawn awoke fire and gold to drive the night monsters, that same light would carry her and Mr. Darcy forward.

After a tearful farewell to her family, Elizabeth took her place beside Mr. Darcy in the carriage. The snow drifted down, frosting the familiar grounds of Longbourn in white.

As the carriage rattled along the road, it caught against a rut. In a flash, Elizabeth relived the moment of plunging into darkness, tumbling into the foul temple beneath Netherfield. She gasped, heart racing, as malevolent whispers and clutching shadows threatened to overwhelm.

Mr. Darcy pulled her close, scattering the waking nightmares. "All is well, my love," he murmured. At her side once more in the gently rocking carriage, the scent of leather seats replacing the fetid reek of decay, the sweet taste of his kiss chasing away the cloying copper tang of blood from her recollections.

Elizabeth leaned into Mr. Darcy's warmth, anchoring herself in the present. Gazing down at their joined hands, golden scars twining together, those reminders of trials overcome lost their terror. No darkness could breach their embrace. The carriage rattled on through fleeting winter twilight and pools of lamplight, bearing them toward joys to come.
