So sorry about the wait. But I got it done and I will seriously try to get more chapters done fast.
So, please read on!
Chapter 7: Things Begin Changing
The next morning after that, I had to say, awkward chat with Dad, I was laying in my bed bored out of my mind, when a soft knock caught my attention. Looking towards the door, I saw Savanna smiling at me. She walked over to my bed and sat down at the end.
"Feeling any better?" She asked.
I rolled my eyes. "I'd feel better if Hiccup and Dad would let me go outside for once."
Savanna chuckled. "They're just being family." I shrugged. Savanna continued, the smile dropping a little. "You don't remember me, do you?"
I sighed. "Honestly, no, and I have to say, if Hiccup didn't trust you so much, I'd be really skeptical of you."
"We met when you were 4 years old."
"Hiccup told me that." I said, crossing my arms loosely over my chest. "He said you and your family came to stay at Berk for a while after you lost your home." Savanna nodded. "Then your parents were killed and you disappeared from the town. Hiccup never saw you again after that."
"And you grew up, forgetting that you and I had ever met." Savanna concluded. "Glad to see that you got your voice back."
"It wasn't really gone." I said. "I just never had a reason to use it."
That was mostly true. See, you know how I mentioned at the start of this story that I was mocked about as much as Hiccup cause neither of us was any good at killing dragons? Well, while Hiccup chose to cover any hurt he felt from the mocking with sarcastic remarks, I was another matter entirely. I don't remember why, (though I'm pretty sure the mocking was at the root of the problem) but I chose to let the hurt build and I stopped talking entirely. The way I saw it, if I didn't talk, no one could mock me. For ten years, no one heard a peep out of me, no laughter, no talking, no shouting, no nothing.
Only Hiccup ever seemed to know what I wanted to say even without me doing anything. It wasn't until Hiccup fought the Green Death and earned a little respect for the two of us that I started talking again. My voice was worn from years of disuse, and it took several weeks to a couple of months for me to be able to talk with coughing my lungs out.
Now that I thought about it, I did vaguely remember Savanna. Hiccup had always had a better memory than me so I really wasn't surprised that he remembered Savanna when I couldn't.
Savanna smiled. "Well, anyways, I'm glad that this time around I can actually talk to you with voices and not have to try and figure out what you're trying to tell me."
I smirked. "Yeah, I guess that is a plus."
Savanna got a thoughtful look on her face. "Hey I've got an idea." I looked up, an eyebrow raised in question. "How bout I take you on a ride on my dragon sister?"
I sighed. "You do remember I said my dad and brother are holding me captive, right?"
"Who says we're going through the front door?" Savanna got up, climbed a little to the skylight and looked out. She let out a loud call that sounded like a dragon call.
A dragon, similar, I noticed, to Toothless in appearance, except she was silvery gray and some of her physical features were different, flew in the skylight and landed in front of my bed. Savanna smiled, climbed back down from the skylight and walked over to the dragon.
"Rana," she said. "Meet my sister, Skyling."
I nodded slowly. "Nice to meet you, Skyling."
Skyling eyed me warily, than she smiled and nudged my side.
I looked at Savanna. "Hey, wanna see something Hiccup found out?" Savanna nodded. I smiled. "Awesome because I haven't tested it on Skalm yet." I looked towards the stairs. "But we'll have to get past Toothless. Hiccup put him on guard duty."
Savanna smirked. "Skyling can help us get past him." She helped me out of my bed (Hiccup was still working on my prosthetic) and onto Skyling's back. She climbed on behind me, holding me on Skyling's back securely, and we took off, flying through the skylight. Apparently, we made it out without a certain Night Fury noticing us.
I directed Savanna to the dragon training academy where, thankfully, the only people there were the twins and Snotlout. Then I also took notice that Drott and Ash were there. Drott was staring at me with this irritated look and Ash was looking at me in much the same way. They looked up as Savanna and I came in.
"What are you doing here?" Drott asked. "I thought you were a leg short."
I rolled my eyes, but chose to ignore him.
"Her leg must be invisible!" Tuffnut exclaimed.
Ruffnut grinned. "That must be the improvement Hiccup made to the design!" The twins banged their heads together and I groaned.
"No, my leg is not invisible." I said. "My leg is still gone. I just can't stand laying around in bed all day."
"So you came here against the wishes of your father and brother?" Snotlout asked. Then he grinned and gave me a thumbs up. "Atta girl, cuz!"
I sighed. "Don't do that, please, Snotlout," I said. "The last thing I want is that kind of praise from you."
My cousin just shrugged and crossed his arms.
"So what are you doing here, Rana?" Drott asked.
"I'm showing Savanna the eel test." I answered. To this, everyone, even Drott, looked at me in shock. "We've never seen her dragon before. We have to find out if Skyling likes eel or not. After I get my new leg, I'm gonna test the same thing on Skalm." With Savanna's help, I made my way over to where I knew Hiccup kept the eels. Taking one out, Savanna and I walked back over to Skyling and I held it out to her. She sniffed it for a moment, then her eyes turned to slits and she hissed loudly. Once she did, I took the eel away and tossed it back behind me away from the dragons.
"Okay," I said. "So apparently Skyling's species doesn't like eel either. Now, I just need Hiccup to give me my new leg so I can test this on Skalm. The more we know about her species the better."
"So this is where you went." A familiar voice said behind me. I went a little rigid as I slowly turned around to see Hiccup standing there, his arms crossed with something in his left hand. Toothless was behind him, a scowl on his face as both of them glared at me. "You, Rana, are supposed to be in bed."
I smiled sheepishly. "You should know that I can't sit still for long. Plus Anna was helping me."
Hiccup looked up a little to see Savanna supporting me by the arm. "Anna, why did you bring Rana here when you knew that…"
Savanna looked at Hiccup. "It's alright, Hiccup."
"Stop, Anna." I said. "It was my idea to come here. I wanted to do the eel test on Skyling. Once I get my leg, I'm gonna try it on Skalm, but…"
"But what?" Hiccup asked.
"I was telling Astrid earlier how much you used to…" I looked up at Savanna.
Hiccup stuttered a bit. "Astrid's not even here." He said.
"Who's not here?" Hiccup stood up straighter and turned around to see Astrid standing behind him. I covered my mouth as I struggled to hold back a laugh. I failed though and burst out laughing before Hiccup could say anything.
Astrid sighed and shrugged. Then she looked at me, like she was just noticing I was here. "What are you doing here, Rana?"
"I wanted to do the eel test on Skyling. I couldn't wait any longer." I answered.
"Well, I finished your prosthetic." Hiccup said, holding said object out. I looked at it. It looked similar to Hiccup's, but had some modifications to it. "Let's get home so you can try it out."
I nodded and, with Hiccup's help, I climbed on Toothless's back and we flew back home.
So how was this chapter? Good? Bad? I seriously hope this was excellent.
