Puppy Kitty Love AU I
This is a SubKam version of the Puppy Love BL manga by Tsuchida Haru! Some Manga quotes here and there and It follows the main story and themes. Petshop AU and Reincarnation AU. Kamui was a kitten in his past life as we all know and is rescued by a kind stranger when all hope seemed lost. I always write way too long chapters so this only takes place for the intro/ch 1 of the manga (^^,). There is a lot of added fluff and Hokuto is alive (and ships the heck out of SubKam) because Subaru deserves a happy life. Updates for this AU and Omegaverse will be coming as well! I have had this idea/story collection for some time and finally have gotten to writing it.
Rescue
Snow. Beautiful, soft and so picturesque yet potentially fatal. One a day like this the longer one remained adrift out in it for too long, the longer they risked a loss to the elements. Especially when it came to a creature struggling for warmth, body temperature dropping.
Lost…stranded, without family. Here this tiny black kitten ventured through the cold, with his little energy left.
Piles and piles of freezing cold snow pour over him, to the point he feels himself sinking. The dark blue highlights on black, contrast greatly with the pure white snow.
It's cold... His big purple eyes closed, slowly coming to accept the circumstances.
I'm hungry. Basic needs not met, harrowing worries began to flood. How long had he been out here?
I can't move. He thinks that piles of snow fall off a branch from a tree and on top of his head. Too tired to move, he collapsed there.
I…am going to die here…. The cruel sense of fate begins crashing down. The kitten breathes softly, purring but only as a way to cope. He mewls pitifully, curling in as tightly to a ball as possible. But he just can't keep warm, not out here and not on his own.
What choice did he have? He was just a scrawny little fluff ball, left to fend without any family left…none he knew of. No known litter mates about or any strays that could offer a moment of warmth. He lost sight of his mother far too young. He let out little mewls, there was no strength left. No family to count on to rescue him.
It had seemed hopeless….
Yet, suddenly as he resolved to his fate, when giving up…He felt the presence of another, soft mittens brushing the snow off his head.
'Who is this?' Perhaps a kind savior. The kitten's violet orbs were in a haze, but the details of the person were blurry. This person was very young and bundled up in an oversized blue snow coat from head to toe.
'I feel warm….' His young savior scooped him up into their arms. The soft warmth of the coat wrapped around the little kitten, and he fell back asleep from exhaustion, waking up to find himself.
From which he rested up in a small cottage, held tenderly by this kind-hearted child. A unique sense of power radiated from this person, it was hard to place what for, but clearly, they were far from ordinary.
Even though I thought this was the end for me…
All thanks to that person…
Brought into a cozy cabin for warmth, his violet orbs open fully, full warmth returning. The kitten purrs and purrs up a storm snuggled up in his pile of blankets. He rests in the lap of the young child rocking him to sleep by the fireplace. Big purple eyes close softly behind eyelids.
I'm alive…
Before he can get used to his newfound rescuer, a voice calls out. The black cat stirs hearing words about 'training' and 'Familial duties.'
The young child leaves with a bittersweet smile. They pet him sweetly on the head before placing the kitten on the chair.
I want to repay them for everything they've done for me.
"I'm sorry we won't be able to see each other again…I have to go now…there are people needing me back home."
Apparently, it was an all-important family business meeting to attend. For someone so young they carried themselves beyond their years, simply closing their eyes and following whatever duty they've been given.
One day…he would surely repay their kindness.
Presently In Tokyo….
Subaru Sumeragi stood at the threshold of his mostly vacant apartment. The tired young heir to the Sumeragi clan. His long fingers clasped and slowly undid the buttons on his long trench coat. He heaved a long strenuous sigh and collapsed on his bed.
Overworked, under sleeping, it was a miracle he made it this far along. His psychic abilities were the only deter to him from becoming terribly ill with so few of his basic needs met.
Instant ramen bowls and empty paper talismans littered all across the floor of the otherwise luxurious apartment. He was compensated well enough…the only catch was his job tended to take about every ounce of energy and breath out of him.
But tonight would be different. He could breathe and rest without worries tomorrow may bring about.
The first day off entirely in the past few weeks, or months? This request was granted by his elder sister's persistence. Even the former Sumeragi head, as stern to principles as she was, had trouble denying the requests of her tenacious granddaughter.
Hokuto… you certainly have the gift of persuasion. Subaru thinks, with a fond shake of his head. As the thought pressed through, he heard a soft buzzing sound. Flipping open his phone he saw the text, flashing on his screen.
'My dearest brother I love you and you need to rest. Do absolutely, take the time off. And don't even think about accepting clients tomorrow or I'll be forced to confiscate your phone!'
Naturally, it showed up from his twin, Hokuto. Her stern kindness had to be the only thing keeping Subaru alive, reminding him to care for himself. Whilst the mess of clothes and snacks piled on the floor, no energy was left to do anything more.
'Cleaning up the apartment…doing laundry, and running errands…I'll get to it tomorrow…'
His last thoughts floated by as he drifted to sleep.
While deep emerald green eyes opened, they quickly shook, in a panic at the sight of the sun creaking in through the blinds.
His work days often start before sunrise. And anytime a client needed him he would be there. Drifting to sleep turned to collapse from exhaustion. Morning had been the next greeting his eyes would receive but it was far later than he expected.
Judging by the sun's placement in the sky, it was already so late.
"I'm late…" Subaru berated himself, hurriedly grasping for the coat on the floor and turning towards the door. Then realization struck.
"Wait…today is…a day off."
A rare event at that…but his sister petitioned on his behalf, having seen her brother malnourished and all but collapsed on the floor during times she'd visit (which was whenever she fancied). She told him she would be far more careful of intruding when he got a boyfriend…like that would happen.
When would he have time? Not to mention the last relationship, could he even call it that? ended spectacularly badly.
Betrayed by one with the kindest of facades yet most malevolent of powers…His deception, and ability to build up and break down Subaru's sense of hope in love, are unrivaled.
Subaru deep down knew better…that this person was far from ideal for a Sumeragi heir, yet he had hoped things could stay as they were. Selfishly hoping even if this man had done such great atrocities, he would at least hold that kindness towards him, protecting him softly.
He fell painfully hard for the man who betrayed him, hurt his sister dearly…cost his grandmother a great price to save him while bringing him back from that dark place…
Still, he couldn't bring himself to hate him, even now. Yet, he'd promised himself he wouldn't try to pursue it any further, the man absent from his life for nearly a decade. But that was that…the more time to focus on his position as clan leader the better.
He was completely finished with being a fool for love.
With those thoughts out of the way, he found his feet went ahead of his mind and traveled to the kitchen, making a cup of coffee. It was one of the few kitchen duties he could do without giving his twin a heart attack.
Perusing the fridge for creamer he found himself running on empty. The contents of the fridge are almost entirely bare, something that should bring concern for his own health, worrying his loved ones.
Yet, he couldn't find much of anything. He'd have to change that…eventually….when he had the time.
After finishing his coffee, and gazing at the clear sky ahead, he decides he has errands to run and only one day off before who knows how long. He should get started.
Never one for crowds, he found a more unknown, quaint supermarket in his city. The sales sign in the window added some appeal. Perhaps a trait he picked up from shopping with his twin.
Money wasn't a pressing issue, but seeing a sign with bold lettering and bright colors could draw anyone's attention.
The cup noodles were on the weekly sale and among the majority of what he put into his basket. His sister's voice rang in his head, nagging him about nutrition. So he did take time in the produce section, grabbing a collection of colorful fruit and vegetables, whatever didn't need to be cooked.
Another appeal to this supermarket would be the shopping center close by. Not too crowded nor too empty to stop it from thriving. His sister had taken him dozens of times out on her shopping sprees, searching every craft store for the perfect fabric for her newest creation.
For Subaru, he had no interest in such clothes and things, simply enjoyed having his sister's company and often being her model. One store, in particular, caught his interest, with puppies and kittens pawing at the store windows. He could never fight his love for animals, even if he couldn't make caring for them a career.
Subaru walked through the doors before he reasoned with himself. He hadn't the time to care for a dog again, not like when he was a child. And yet….
Once that small glass window came into view it was like his feet had a mind of his own.
Sweetly, running around, playing, and cuddling up was a mix of puppies and kittens showcased in the front window. Their colors and patterns vary likely brought in and found from all around Tokyo.
There was no chance he had the time now to care for another while barely caring for himself.
Yet, here he was, smiling and looking at the adorable baby animals with such awe. Colorful cream and brown little puppies were up and playing, tugging on each other's ears. While a few others quietly curled up in their bed, content to sleep the day away.
Across from the puppies, lies an area sectioned off for the tiniest little kittens. Black, orange, white, gray, and various mixes of colors and patterns. They appeared to all be from different litters. Each animal has its own story for how it came to be here. Yet, they seemed comfortable in the presents of visitors.
The kittens were spunky, swatting around a feather ball and pouncing on one another. There were various groups of litter mates curled up, lying over each other for warmth. The sight alone melted something inside Subaru. His lips couldn't suppress the little curve.
"Meeeew!" The highest-pitched meow caught his attention. A little gray kitten blinks up at him through the glass barrier. He raises himself up on his front paws, standing to look over with those big blue eyes.
'Adorable….'
Subaru melts, holding a hand to his chest. They were all so precious. Heart warm, his cheeks dusted pink, and he was smiling for the first time in a long while, so drawn into the sweet fluff balls.
A dog was out of the question with his schedule but…
'If I had the time and some help…then…maybe I could.'
"Would you like to hold one in your arms?" A young man's soft velvety voice called out to him. He gasped, the sweet tone breaking him from his thoughts.
When he looked into the sparkling violet orbs of the shopkeeper, he felt a peculiar tug in his chest.
This young man simply glows beneath the store lights. His features were exquisite and beautifully effeminate yet had a beautiful figure with lean yet broad shoulders. The boy must have been 19 or 20…and held an air of freedom about him. Something Subaru couldn't imagine when he was that age…nearly a decade ago.
The younger man smiled brightly, with his soft plush pink lips. His hair is silky and raven-black not unlike the kitten he had cradled in his arms. Most strikingly were those beautiful shining doe eyes. The color is a perfect blend of violet and blue, entirely enchanting, pulling him in further.
Working at a simple pet store yet being a natural vision with the smallest upturn of his lips….this young man could easily become a model! Subaru thinks in wonder, not stopping to question these racing thoughts or the fluttering sensation in his stomach.
"I…" Subaru murmurs, his throat dry. The young man's lips curl up higher, seemingly bemused.
"Ah- Sir?" He gently pulls him from his thoughts.
"Oh…r-right. H-hold…in my arms. To…hold you," Subaru scrambled for words, hands waving about feeling stupid. An unusual flush pulled over his often calm features. Did I really just say…that? To a stranger?
And an absolutely beautiful stranger at that.
How did the words come out that poorly?
"Huh?" The younger shopkeeper titled his head cutely, seemingly lost. He quickly beamed, an angelic laugh slipping through plush lips.
"Hahaha…no, silly," He laughs in a tender tone, not far from an adorable giggle. Looking closer at Subaru, gazing into his eyes, he starts to flush. "I'm afraid I am a bit too heavy to hold like this little one."
Subaru thinks before he can stop himself. I think I'd be perfectly capable of carrying you if need be…
Easily he could envision scooping the young shopkeeper into his arms. Whether carrying him on his back, hoisted over his shoulder, or more ideally….held with his arms under the young man's legs and back, it could certainly be done.
Thankfully Subaru doesn't voice these ideas into words.
"Would you like to try holding this one?" He asks politely, cradling a soft black kitten with a streak of white upon its back, resembling wings. "I saw you looking at the kittens and puppies for a while now."
Has it been a while? He'd been drawn in by such a cute relaxing atmosphere. The worker and kitten gazed up at him with an air of fondness. Their eyes have a similar tone, the kitten's eyes sparkle with a lighter shade of purple akin to lilac. While this young man holds a gaze shimmering with the perfect fusion of deep blue and violet.
"Can I really…?" Subaru asks, already reaching for the cat, its purrs beginning to vibrate. All so gently, the worker hands the kitten over to him, pressing it against his chest. Their hands brushed, the younger man ensuring Subaru had a careful hold under the feline before letting go.
Subaru cradled the purring feline instantly, its tiny black head nuzzling his chest.
"He seems quite attached to you," The younger male says wistfully. His voice is quiet, but there's something in his eyes showing he is seemingly thrilled.
"He's incredibly warm…" Subaru begins, petting between the kitten's ears. His long and gentle fingers brush and pet the kitten's head and face, earning a new series of purrs.
"Meeeeew!" The kitten mewls up at him, pawing at his chest. Sparkly doe eyes look to the kind holder expectantly
"And vocal!" Subaru adds on just a hint of a laugh escaping. He misses the way the younger man bites his lip.
"It's wonderful isn't it, how happy and full of life something this tiny can be…barely being in the world for a few weeks," He returns with a caring tone, brushing through the kitten with a single finger, under its chin.
"It must feel nice being held so gently," The young man whispers to the kitten. It mewls at the shopkeeper, before turning and nuzzling Subaru as though claiming territory. "I'm glad then."
Hearing every word, Subaru found his stomach doing flips. This beautiful young stranger smiles the tiniest of smiles and his expression melts helplessly…something pulled Subaru in deeper. He was never one for chitchat…or had an urge to know anyone more and yet…he found words slipping out.
"I used to have a dog when I was little…but I always wondered what it might be like having a cat," Subaru rambles on with his thoughts. Sharing something about himself, even this much, how unlike him. Vulnerability came from speaking to others about these things and yet he found himself oddly relaxed here.
A warm hand brushed over his own, whilst petting the kitten in his arms.
"Aw, really? Well, animals seem attached to you," he cheerily tells him, holding a hand to his cheek. Those purple orbs, glancing up and admiring the older man. With a Cheshire-cat grin, the younger male boldly tells him, "I can see why." He flushes realizing the words that slipped forward.
Subaru swallows but otherwise keeps calming front. He thanks all the training from the Sumeragi clan to not let his emotions fall.
"Unfortunately right now…I've got my hands full with my own problems…my work is incredibly draining…" Subaru bows his head, looking solemnly down at the carefree kitty. "Honestly, I don't even know how I make it through the day…I can hardly care for myself…my sister always worries…so being responsible and caring for another creature seems…"
"Hey!" The bright shopkeeper brings him from his despairing thoughts. He holds his hands up to the side. "Even if you can't adopt. You can still come by here any time you want to visit. Watching the animals here seemed to make you look really happy." Cutely, he folds his hands closed, pumping them up by his cheeks, as though cheering him on. Those hands curl up like cat paws, seeming so natural.
Subaru reaches a hand to his cheeks, his lips, feeling the curve there. "I look…happy?"
Had he only realized now? Was happiness even a possibility in his life, with his fate…and duties…he held doubts.
Yet the longer Subaru gazed into sparkling violet orbs the more he began to hold to a sense of hope.
"Please come and visit them and cheer yourself up whenever you need to," He encourages further, a beaming smile leaving all others breathless.
"Do…you mean that?" Subaru holds some disbelief, why was a stranger this caring…noticing his expressions, seeming to read him better than he himself could.
"Of course," Again, he laughs that same enchanting airy laugh.
The younger male leans up on his tiptoes. He leans in close, closer making Subaru nearly step back. The younger male leans in, breathing in his scent.
His mind too preoccupied with the look of delicate long lashes fluttering to a beautiful close, he lets the younger man linger.
"Ah?" Subaru voices, unsure.
Seeming to recognize what he's done, the young man leans back onto his heels. His cheeks bloom an enchanting shade of light pink. He covers his mouth.
"Do…I smell bad or…something?" Subaru asks apprehensive, sniffing the same part of his jacket.
"Oh. I-I really am sorry," he apologizes, bowing his head. "It's just you…" The hand at his lips rises to his cheek. "You have this nostalgic scent about you."
Nostalgic? Subaru inwardly repeats. Perplexed, yet something about the word makes him feel, full, warm, and special.
"Kamui!"
A deeper, masculine voice calls out, scolding the young man. He appears with a confident stride over, tall, dark, and handsome. His body is larger, broader, and more muscular than Kamui, with shorter dark hair and darkening amber eyes.
"Can you help me in the back?"
"Ah, Fuuma?" Kamui seemed to sense the tension, before nodding. "Sure, I'll be there to help."
Seeing the displeasure in the other worker's eyes, Subaru bowed out. He ducked his head, apologizing. "Sorry for taking so much of your time. I hadn't meant to keep you from work."
Kamui gingerly took back the kitten from him. He closed his eyes, lips curling up graciously. He shakes his head. "Not at all. You're not taking anything from me. In fact, you got this kitty so relaxed for me. He's quite timid around others…yet he seemed drawn to you right away." He looks down towards said fluffball. "Oh? It felt nice being held by him?"
The kitten looks up at Kamui, a seemingly kindred spirit. It blinks slowly.
"Aw, then I'm happy for you…" Kamui responds ears perking to the little meows.
Subaru finds his stomach in knots, melting at the sight. He talks to the kittens…that's rather adorable.
While his tone carried a hint of affection talking to his coworker, it didn't carry to Subaru.
He looked Subaru over from head to toe, then towards his flustered co-worker and back. He scowled at Subaru, seemingly annoyed.
"Come again!" Kamui cheerfully replies, with a cute wink to follow up. As though Subaru needed more incentive.
"So… how was your first day off?" Hokuto chimes in, busying herself from her twin's apartment.
"Hokuto," Subaru voices only mild surprise. He nods his head, remembering his sister's insistence on kind greetings and formalities. "Ah, right I mean, I'm home."
His sister looks him up and down, noticing the worried lines on her brother's forehead fade. And more peculiar, his lips are curved up, ever so slightly.
"Welcome back," She says. Her twin feels two slender arms wrapping him up in a comforting hug.
"How was your time?" Whilst uninvited, Subaru couldn't complain about her stopping in, often helping to clean things up. She tidied up a few food items on the counter, throwing out the expired foods and trash he missed lying about.
"It's been…" Subaru pauses, how to describe it? Whilst he felt the impulse to be working that soon faded as he busied himself with errands. Those beautiful sparkling purple eyes flood his mind. He doesn't notice the dreamy curl forming further upon his lips. "Nice."
"Oh~" Hokuto lifted a brow, placing down emptied shopping back on the kitchen counter. Her eyes twinkled, interest piqued. She walks around her twin, studying his features more closely. "You do seem happier than usual."
"Ah…really?" Subaru runs his finger along his cheek. In turn, he feels the upturned curve lifting them up. An expression he hadn't worn in some time. "I guess so…"
"Where'd you go?" Hokuto holds mischief in her eyes. There's something there. She playfully giggles, and teases. "You've got a hot date or something planned?"
"W-what? No!" Subaru denies voice cracking, denial stronger than necessary. His sister raises her eyes.
"Wait did you really~" She's bouncing upon her heels. Her hands fold curled up to her chest.
"No, I just ran some errands." Subaru can't let her finish the thought. Always one to get carried away, pointing out nearly every guy looking his way since…the breakup. If he could even count it as having a relationship.
"I went to the supermarket," Subaru explains, gesturing to the bags in his hands. The light bag stuffed with cup noodles makes his twin shake her head.
She brightens like seeing a variety of produce in the other bag. 'Baby steps, to take care of himself.' The other food is perfectly fine additions, and with little to no preparation.
"I'm glad, your kitchen was nearly empty when I came to check on things…I brought over some food too…but don't try to cook them again" She begins with a gentle warning. Her tone holds firmness but care." I am happy to cook for us." She voices honestly while holding a silent prayer. 'Dear God, please let him find a husband that can cook.'
Handling one Subaru nearly burning down their apartment was enough. She couldn't handle two.
She placed her hands on her hip, adding slyly. "So… is that where you saw them?"
Subaru blinks, "Who?"
Hokuto giggles, sure of herself. "Whoever brought that smile to your face."
"N…no… it's like…" Subaru flushed slightly pink, turning his head. What was he getting so worked up for? "I went to the pet store nearby…"
"Oh?" Hokuto begins, gesturing for her brother to relax and have a seat on his couch.
Subaru waves his hand dismissively, pacing around his kitchen with a hint of nerves. He could feel his twin's eyes on his back reading him naturally.
"They had a lot of new puppies and kittens…" Subaru trails off quietly. No matter how much adoration he felt for the little animals he couldn't get over the sight of those gorgeous violet eyes. "I got to hold one of the kittens…" His lips curl up into a smile, hopelessly an animal person.
"Aww! Now I have to go there. I remember when we were younger having a puppy and how attached he was to you! And the cats around Kyoto used to come up to you and follow you back home wait-" She takes a breath momentarily ceasing her ramble. It adds together. "Is that where you found this someone?"
"Someone?" Subaru blinks, leaning over the kitchen island. He glances around, really noticing everything was so neatly organized and put away…his sister did so much, and perhaps that's why he let her indulge in her matchmaking schemes. But he still felt a sense of dread, pink blooming on his expression.
"There's someone who works there right?" Hokuto grins cheerily. She stands up to meet her twin in the kitchen and places her elbows on the countertop. Her palms frame her face, holding under her chin. "Whoever let you hold the kitten?"
"Yes…" Subaru answers slowly, a smile quivers, having an idea where this was going. "Of course, the employee was very nice…he reminded me a bit of the kittens he saw." He doesn't mean to let the latter part slip, and he sees his sister's eyes raise before lighting up wildly
"Oh. My. gosh! You have to tell me all about him! What did he look like? How old is he? Is he your type, oh he's totally your type, look you're blushing." Hokuto teases, leaning up to poke her brother's cheek, her series of questions only continues further.
Something told him this was going to be a long day. Hokuto wouldn't give up until she heard the name of the mystery employees. "What's his name." One who brought such a relaxed smile to her brother's face in…who knows how long it's been?
"Kamui."
"Aww! I have to meet him!" Hokuto speaks, already decided.
Subaru purses his lips, willing away the blush. Hokuto hums happily, finally getting her overworked brother to have a seat. Whilst she begins her rambles.
"Kamui, huh? He sounds super cute! I'll have to visit the pet shop sometime to see what he's like and…."
Subaru shakes his head, fond and quite used to the routine. 'Oh, well…at least she's happy.'
For Subaru to show some interest in another after his ex…well she couldn't help but be on cloud nine. Feeling much like witnessing a rainbow after the rain.
And Subaru couldn't say this feeling now was all that bad.
Changes
"Yes, I will still be in Kyoto for the weekend, I'm just not taking on more clients for the weekend unless it's absolutely necessary and….yes…yes…thank you for understanding, Grandmother. I'll see you then. Goodbye." Subaru politely ends the call, falling back into the chair at his desk.
Never in his life, and certainly not since becoming clan leader did he turn down work (even if it was one that could be handled by other clan members). Not for reasons like needing a break or time to sleep….
When he thinks it over he almost laughs, his entire world had been built upon his place in the world. His fate and responsibilities as clan leader mattered most…only when he first fell in love did he deviate from the norm… keeping secrets from the former head and becoming reclused…unreachable for some time after his first love, relationship and everything crashed and burned spectacularly…one year after it so-called started.
Perhaps, after that time it made him all the more likely to overwork himself, as though making amends. Struggles to say no, as when he was a teen, came back.
Life was hectic and busy but not overly painful. He didn't involve others aside from his family to get close. And assumed he could keep it that way…
But here he is now… allowing himself to feel again…attachment.
Attached, to those tiny little kittens at the pet store, making him feel so at ease. Attached to that calming little shop. And attachment towards that bright smile, gorgeous violet eyes, and sweet demeanor. The store worker hadn't left his mind for a day.
For the first time in a long time, he let himself feel…enjoy something simply because it made him a little bit happy. Just an afternoon off after weeks of work, but for Subaru it was a relief. He'd been going out earlier if the last Onmyouji job hadn't gone until the middle of the night.
But that was then… and right now-Impulse brought him back to the same shopping mall. As though pulled in by a magnetic force he planted himself in front of the pet shop window, staring amicably at the curled-up kittens and playful puppies living freely.
'You seem so happy and carefree, playing and sleeping as you like…as you should be.' Subaru thinks affectionately, seeing the mix of litters rescued from all about. All the animals were sweet, now able to live life in harmony, with plenty of love and attention from Kamui for certain. 'So very cute….'
"Oh, hey, you're back." That familiar, soft velvety voice greeted Subaru out of his daydream. Meowing, the same kitten, fluffed with raven-black fur. The little guy had been curled up in the shop window, blinking sleepily up at its admirer.
"Ah, Kamui!" Subaru returned, trying his best not to stumble on a simple word. Dazzling violet-blue eyes swirled with a sheen of excitement. They lit up considerably, locking eyes with a pair of emerald orbs.
"Welcome back, it's been some time," Kamui greets sweetly, waving for his returning customer to come fully inside the shop and explore.
"Ah…" Subaru nods, mind going dizzy the more he takes in such a sweet smile, feeling so private…as though one just for him. He clears his throat for good measure before continuing. "Yes…My work doesn't allow me a lot of time off…but I had the afternoon free and…I do really want to adopt a kitten."
Kamui beamed, eyes sparkling as bright as the heavens. "That's wonderful!" He cheered him on. Catching the glances towards the small black cat, Kamui scoops up the fur balls, cradling it in his arms, drawing it closer to its potential owner.
Subaru couldn't deny the odd tugs at his chest, coming up during this second visit.
"I still need to work out my schedule…and see if I can get my sister to help care for it when I can't make the time but…I'll get there…" Subaru speaks assuredly, despite having no idea if he'd get there. He struggled taking half a day off- But those dazzling eyes and plush lips curled up high, made him want to do everything he could to try.
And he…quite liked the idea of coming home to bond with and care for another pet again, it had been too long. The silent comfort, understanding beyond words.
"Ah…" Subaru holds a hand to his mouth as though trying to physically push the blush away and prevent himself from saying something off. It became harder as he felt a warm presence coming closer to him. "It may be some time…but when I can figure it out I will come back here and I'll see you…ah, Kamui right?
Kamui steps closer to him, closing in until they're separated by a small kitten-sized space. The feline from the window cradled in his arms. As he looks back up, head tilted back, they realize the height difference. The younger man is gazing up at him, his lips curve brightly, quite enticing. "That's right…"
Kamui is close enough that Subaru can reel the warm breath on his lips. He gasps softly, swallowing hard the next second. "I had a dog before but I certainly could use some tips on being a proper cat owner if you don't mind…"
"Of course," Kamui confirms, leaning up on his tiptoes, if only to look more directly into the other's eyes. From this angle, Subaru notices how long those eyelashes are, and how soft and plush those lips look. "You seem…quite kind, I hope you are able to take him home with you…Mister?"
There's a pause, Kamui looks expectantly unsure how to address him.
"Ah, it's Sumeragi Subaru," Subaru introduces, reaching his hand up to pat the top of the kitten's head. The little cat purrs contentedly, hugged between their two warm bodies, snuggling them both. "I've never been good being addressed formerly…"
"So…Subaru then?" Kamui clarifies, although being on a first-name basis would seem sudden…this time it comes out feeling all too right. "Like the constellation right?"
Subaru nods, feeling his body temperature rise simply being this close to the other. He feels something tug at his chest, when those eyes turn to the side, albeit shyly.
"That's a beautiful name…" Kamui murmurs, flushed slightly pink and uncertain if he really voiced the thought aloud.
"Thank you," Subaru returns in kind. You are also quite… "Y-your name as well…" He falls into a stuttering mess, barely saving himself from losing face.
Then a gentle, smile curling of lips open to a breathy, beautiful bout of laughter. "Thank you," Kamui returns in all sincerity, turning his gaze a bit. As though only realizing how close he'd gotten, the younger male takes a step back. He brings the black kitten up higher, covering part of his face. "Then I'll be waiting for you to come and get me." He puts on a quiet little voice for the actual kitten.
Subaru takes a moment to pause heart clenching at the scene…His mind stutters unsure if the male before him and the small kitten are all that different. He's smitten at the sight. I want to take you home… Though, he's really not sure which 'kitten' his mind refers to.
"Ah…" Kamui lowers the kitten from his face, before turning his head away. 'What did I just do? Did I honestly…embarrass myself in front of the most gorgeous man I've seen?' He flushes a bright cherry red. "Please say something…I'm sorry I didn't make it too awkward did I-"
"Ah-" Subaru starts before breaking into a breathily warm laugh, mind finally processing the words said. He's unsure how much comes from amusement and nerves. "Sorry, you're…that was haha…" What was he doing, laughing like this? Opening himself up further without a second thought, in front of this person he just met. Seeing the out-of-plush lips he quickly seeks to make amends. "But…in a good, way.."
"That's enough laughing though…" Kamui huffs, puffing out his lips.
Subaru settles himself down. There's one thing he knows, he can't stop himself from saying- "No…it's just…you were quite cute."
Kamui freezes. "I-"
Quite cute.
This person…Subaru…
Perhaps the most beautiful man he's laid eyes on finds….him? To be cute?
Here he thought he'd grown annoyed by that word, yet the second 'cute' slipped from this man's lips, he felt his stomach do flips. Words came so genuine, not a tease as he'd expect from others.
This beautiful person before him just said he was…. A full-bodied blush drowned over Kamui's features, his chest fluttering.
"Ah, ah saying something sweet like that is well…Also quite….cu-" Kamui fumbled with a series of words and retorts making very little sense. He quickly covered his mouth with his palm, calming himself the best he could. His face burned from top to bottom a searing shade of red.
"Kamui?" Subaru calls with concern attempting to step forward, reaching for…comfort? Since when did he do that? And with someone he knew so little. Thankfully, the tender kitten seems to take on that role, placing a consoling paw by Kamui's arm as though patting it.
Kamui steps back and shakes his head. He calms enough, returning to that tiny serene smile.
"That…really helped. I was caught up in work constantly…and that made me feel better…you and the kittens. So thank you." Subaru professes in all seriousness.
"You…don't have to thank me…" Kamui murmurs, abashedly, keeping his gaze on the kitten in his arms.
"I'm planning on taking more time out so I can care for one of these," Subaru voices petting the top of the cat's head, which nuzzles instantly to his touch. "So…" This time it's Subaru who takes that extra step forward, he leans his head down gently voice so tender. "Wish me luck?"
Kamui is struck with the unexpected urge to lean in closer. He swallows at the question. His earlier blush returns at the words, as much as he tries to loin away he keeps being brought back to those orbs of emerald.
"Of course, I will." Kamui returns with an equally tender, blissful smile.
Reluctantly, Subaru pets the baby cat's head once more. He refrains, barely, from doing the same with Kamui. Yet, he fears if he stays here too long…his chest might just explode with this newfound warmth. So for today…they part.
The tender purrs and sweet smiles, drive Subaru to work harder to build the life he wants…one where he can make the time for something more than just his…fate.
While Subaru still struggled with allowing himself a little time for his own needs and wants…he had certain motivation now.
Nearly every weekend, he squeezed in the time. Never had he worked harder to make something "non-essential" a part of his life. For once, he favored time just for himself, his own happiness.
"Off to see your boyfriend again?~" Hokuto teases all too knowing, eyes full of mischief.
"Ah…you know he's not…but," Subaru breathes a sigh softly, shaking his head. He settles for accepting the teasing. He can't stay too bothered because…that word doesn't sound all too bad. Against his better judgment, and plans to keep his distance, he was becoming attached. "I am gonna visit the pet shop for a bit…"
"Have fun then!" Hokuto remembers, voting cheerily. " Also I saw him yesterday when I was out running errands. He's adorable!"
Subaru can't deny the obvious, so he stays silent nodding and smiling. He bites his lip, quickly turns the knob of the door, and closes it behind him a rush driving through him.
In no time he's returned to that place.
"Good evening, Kamui," Subaru greets tenderly, taking the initiative to enter the pet shop, instead of staring out the shop window longingly.
"Oh," Kamui pauses from where he's standing. He places down the box of supplies, before turning on his heel. His lips curl shyly, cheeks dusting pink and his eyes begin to glow. "Good evening. It's good to see you. I've noticed you're here even on weekdays…I know this place is a comfort after a long day of work so…." He all too enticingly bites his lips. "I hope you're not working yourself too hard."
Truly. That had been the incentive…relaxing after a hectic work day. Simply relaxing to see…the kittens and puppies of course!
"Oh no…it's not too bad…" Subaru begins a bit shakily. He rubs at the back of his neck, laughing a little nervously.
Of course, there were other incentives now…but this was Kamui… Adorably, oblivious Kamui.
"But really don't work yourself too hard…I wouldn't want you feeling sick," Kamui voices his concerns in earnest, gazing up with tender puppy eyes. Perhaps…kitten eyes were more likely. "But I'm happy to have
"Thank you I really-" Subaru leans in closer. He meant to say something more. His hand subconsciously reached out, brushing ever so lightly over Kamui's hands when-
"Kamui!" A stern, deeply masculine voice calls out, tone clearly disapproving. The mood earlier dampened.
Subaru turns back to see the stern look of the man behind them. He's young, about the same age as Kamui, but looking at them closer, he sees the way this man towers over Kamui. His dark hair held a mysterious sheen to it while his cool amber eyes held a hint of displeasure.
"Fuuma?" Kamui turns back, calling with comfort and familiarity.
Perhaps…he was someone quite special to Kamui.
The very thought makes Subaru turn sour… He can feel those eyes glaring daggers at his back, as the man steps closer to Kamui.
"A customer needs your help out front," Fuuma informs his coworker.
"Oh, sorry I must be keeping you from work…" Subaru bows his head, guilt swirled in his eyes. Even though the guilt, he's reluctant to go.
"Not at all. Take all the time you need," Kamui bows his head, smiling at Subaru. He seems comfortable enough, leaving his favorite customer to help another. In his haste to head back to work, he leaves, missing the tension between the two men behind him.
And now it's the two of us… Subaru thinks disdainful tension is growing thicker. His incentives for staying here walking further away.
"Excuse me." The displeased store clerk calls from behind him, eyes growing darker by the moment.
Subaru estimates there must be an age gap of at least 8 or 9 years…there is little to no indication this man holds any respect, or uncomfortability around him. Specifically him…
"Yes?" Subaru turns his head, meeting the steely amber eyes. He holds back a gasp, the man seeming to resemble his ex-lover a little too easily with such a cold gaze. "Can I help you?"
"Tell me, exactly what is your relationship with Kamui?" Fuuma doesn't waste any time.
Subaru swallows hard, fears confirmed, there was clearly something between those two. "Ah, you don't need to worry…" He forces his breathing to calm, speaking cooly. "We are simply just an employee and customer." It wasn't a total lie…so Why does it ache that much to voice aloud?
"Oh, I am sorry." Subaru apologetically lowers his head, respectfully. He attempts to amend the situation, giving this man the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps, it's not jealousy, but understandable frustration keeping his coworker occupied "I've come by quite often lately…and have been too much of a distraction. I was planning on heading back now anyway so…"
"You're leaving so soon?" Fuuma asks, eyes cold and holding more than a hint of resentment. Yet, there's an odd trace of amusement as well. It's perplexing.
'Doesn't that solve the main problem if I go now?' Truly, it's not like this man could simply read Subaru's thoughts.
"We're going to have the kittens out to play in the back room, you might as well see them while you're here?" Fuuma surprises him with a considerate gesture.
"Ah, they are?" Subaru feels slight ease of tension. Maybe he read this man wrong? He held a hospitable side. This was an excellent chance to get more up close and personal, playing with his next potential pet.
Before Subaru can turn and leave to see said kittens he's struck with a warning. A firm hand clasps over his shoulder.
"Oh, and by the way. If I do find you're causing Kamui any trouble," Fuuma warns, feigning a smile the entire time…making it all the more terrifying. "Or causing him pain. You will be more than just banned from this store. And can forget about seeing Kamui again." The protective nature and warning went beyond a sign of sole friendship.
"Of course…I understand his job is important to him…" Subaru replies with a forced smile back. He is ever grateful for his training as a Sumeragi to keep his emotions in check. He couldn't let himself get into discourse with someone close to Kamui.
Thankfully the tension dissolved once entering a small room in the back. He unwound seeing the kittens up close, waving a feather wand around and watching the tiny fluff balls paw and chase after it.
Before he could head out for the night a familiar voice cried out.
"Subaru!" Kamui came running up to him. He grasps his arm as though desperate not to lose sight of him.
Remembering his co-worker's warnings Subaru ensures to mention. "Kamui, you should be at work right?"
"I'll be off soon," Kamui informs with a brightening smile. His lips pursed as a flush painted over creamy cheeks. "If you have the time…to wait for me…maybe we could grab a drink in the park and talk for a little?"
Subaru freezes, head spinning as his mind races a million miles a minute. His chest clenches, and he holds a hand to it. 'Does this count as a date?' No, no no he was supposed to be done with that kind of thinking. Had he learned nothing? Yet...he couldn't fight whatever this was, bubbling up his chest, a feeling locked tight away beginning to escape from his heart's chambers.
Was Kamui possibly asking him out?…or at least maybe feeling a fraction of the confusing feelings Subaru kept inside were not one-sided?
"If you're too tired after a long day of work I understand," Kamui abashedly rubs at his cheek. "Sorry…I don't mean to put you on the spot like that and.."
"I will be waiting for you as soon as you're off," Subaru declares with far more intensity than intended.
Kamui tilts his head to the side for a moment. His eyes close dreamily while his lips break out into a fully beaming grin. "Good, in that case, I'll see you later."
Subaru forgot the scenery, other people, and everything that didn't involve Kamui. His mind carried him dreamily towards a park not far from the shop. Anticipating the younger male's arrival he felt his heart soar.
"Subaru!" Kamui's velvety soft voice calls out to him, waving cheerily. He can't seem to stop himself from running to the older man, ignoring his beautifully flushed cheeks. "I'm sorry I made you wait. "
"It's no problem at all," Subaru ensures with a brightened smile.
Kamui catches up to him, right at his side. Despite how little they knew of each other it was comforting and right. Somehow, Kamui found himself under Subaru's arm, an excuse for the cold breeze.
Kamui happily rested his head on Subaru's shoulder nuzzling him like a kitten. He beams, cuddling closer to Subaru's neck. He hums softly akin to a purr, at the gentle hand, unconsciously petting his hair.
'He is very much a kitten….' Subaru thinks entirely fondly.
"So what are you smiling about?" Kamui breaks him from his thoughts, those enchanting doe eyes now entirely closed. Those long eyelashes unconsciously batting leave Subaru breathless.
"I was thinking…when I touched your hair…you reminded me like a purring kitten."
Caught off guard, feeling seen through, Kamui sputters. He waves his hands in front of himself, averting his eyes. "W-what?! Why would you say that?" He's entirely too defensive, Subaru blinks.
"It's quite cute," Subaru compliments again, gently repeating the action, petting the crown of Kamui's head and carding his fingers through those silky locks. "Well, there's a vending machine up ahead…"
Subaru recalls the original purpose of this meeting. "Would you like anything?"
"You don't have to…" Kamui responds humbly, seeing the older male.
"I want to," Subaru answers with conviction. His lips melt into a smile, the tender little curl of his lips, reserved as what he considers the "seeing Kamui" smile.
"In that case…maybe a hot chocolate?" Even his choice of drink is adorable and sweet.
"Sure thing," Subaru confirms dialing in the numbers and selecting a can of hot cocoa and a coffee.
"Thank you," Kamui begins tenderly, taking his drink. As they stroll through the park, Kamui voices. "You are…quite kind…"
Lost in the midst of their conversation, Kamui loses himself in those emerald eyes. They approach a crosswalk, his feet moving ahead of his mind and tripping over that step separating the sidewalk to the center of the road.
"Kamui!" Subaru cries out in alarm. Instinctively he reaches for the younger male before he can fall. His right arm swoops around the male's slender waist, the left outstretched, hand grasping around Kamui's wrist.
Sparks ignite from the sudden contact. The younger man subconsciously holds tight to him, arms wound around his neck like a lifeline. Kamui is brought up carefully, his head resting again on Subaru's chest hearing his roaring heartbeat.
With one hand resting at Kamui's back and the other clasping his hand, it's as though they were brought into an ever-slow and intimate kind of tango. The younger male dipping back ever so slightly
He pulls him up quickly, enveloping the younger man in his embrace.
"Are you alright?" Subaru asks tone huskies than normal and so very warm. He breathes it so close to Kamui's ear, he nearly mewls.
"Yes… thank you…" Kamui means to lean up, and properly look Subaru in the eyes. He finds his pupils blown out, gazing into that deep sea of emeralds, in turn falling to violet orbs.
This close-up and…flushed together…Kamui is enamored…flooded with that familiar scent. He feels entirely certain. "I knew it…"
"Kamui?" Subaru asks again with great concern, still unrelenting in holding Kamui this close. Neither finds it necessary to move just yet.
An overwhelming wave of bliss sweeps up and down his body. He subconsciously reaches a hand forward, resting it on Subarus's cheeks. He can't hide the blissful smile curling on his lips nor the near tears threatening to fall from his eyes. His cheeks blush a deep pink while his heart aims to set new records beating madly. "I know this scent…I've finally found you."
"Kamui?" Subaru asks, furrowing his brow. He feels the younger male taking both hands into his own, holding them tight. "Subaru… I'm that same kitten you saved out in the snow all those years ago."
"You…what?" Subaru processes, searching for a hint of a teasing smirk or follow-up. Kamui locks eyes with him dead serious. Is he…serious?
Certainly, he heard of spirits remaining among living things, people, plants, and animals…but…he certainly would remember saving a poor kitten stuck out in the snow, and one as cute as Kamui.
Perhaps…this is all built up in his head. Despite the circumstances, Subaru can't turn away or bring himself to move, the embrace between them all too warm.
It's not like he can fight the fluttering feelings in his chest, no matter how abstract he may sound.
It seems… His heart could only be drawn to the most peculiar of characters.
