"Awaken…"
Kara's eyes slowly opened, her body gradually rising to sit up. "Alex?" She called out, however she was met with silence. She was then aware that someone was in the medical area with her. She glanced over as the warrior that Leo knew rose. "You're Leo's… friend. You were at the LuthorExpo."
Diana rubbed the temples of her head. "Yes… you know Leo? What happened? Last thing I remember I was talking with Leo… then I must have blacked out." Diana stood up. "I'm Diana. Nice to meet you."
Kara stood up as well. "I was fighting a chimera, but I don't remember what happened after that. I'm Supergirl, but you can call me Kara." Kara used her x-ray vision to scan the area, but no one was in the tower. That was odd. "No one is here. I wonder what happened." She walked out to the control center, with Diana following her.
Kara's fingers activated the computer system. "Looks like something is being broadcast… let me pull it up." After a few button presses, Kara saw that the news media was broadcasting an emergency announcement.
The man giving the report started to disclose the horrible news. "The drought continues to affect the central portion of the nation. The president has declared a state of emergency. Environmentalists are stunned, but they have indicated that water levels around the globe are dropping in a similar fashion. It's now reported that more than half of the globe is experiencing this unexplainable drought."
Kara and Diana were both stunned as they watched the news feed. "This must be Leviathan." Diana was sure of it. It was the only explanation that made any sense and why Leo and Diggle were nowhere to be found. They must have gone to prevent them from succeeding. Were they alive?
"If this is Leviathan's doing, then we need to find them and end this." They could be facing millions dying all to accomplish Leviathan's twisted plan.
Diana gave a nod. "I have a lead. Before I passed out, an old friend was trying to contact me. We have a way to go though."
"We better get going then." She hoped the others were safe.
Leo's eyes shot open, and he instantly sat up. Manitou was calmly sitting cross-legged beside him. "Did you put your hand in my chest?" Leo looked down at his chest. There was an obvious hole. "Oh god! Am I dead?"
"Calm yourself. You aren't dead, but you aren't alive either. Some place in between." Manitou motioned to Leo's heart, which was placed in front of Manitou. "The spell required a strong heart."
Leo swallowed thickly, "You're just going to leave it on the ground like that?! You need to explain things! Where are we and why did you pull my heart out of my chest? I thought I was going to die!"
Manitou seemed strangely calm, considering Leo was confused and concerned that his heart was out of his body. "In order to save your friends, I needed to save their spirits. It was too late to save their bodies. Your heart was necessary in order for me to cast the spell." He paused before picking Leo's heart up and placing it in a small leather bag and hooking the bag to his belt. "As for where we are, we are in an underground cavern. Hidden from your mother while we wait for your friends."
"So they really are dead, but you saved their spirit." Leo slowly repeated Manitou's words to help process. "You mentioned that my mother was lost… lost how? Before this, he focused more on trying to save his friends than figuring out what Manitou meant when he said that his mother was lost.
"Your mother was true to her word before she began absorbing the energy from her fallen allies." Was all he said.
"Began? You mean she started before she raised the city?"
"Yes, even for her, it would have been too great a strain to take in all that energy. Now, though her body has adjusted, she's taken to gorging herself."
"Are you keeping an eye on her?"
"As much as I can. I can send my Raven to keep watch. She's drained them all. All except the Queen. We must stop her. The spell she cast is pulling all the water to Atlantis. The rest of the world will soon burn."
Hearing that there was a sliver of hope that his mother wasn't completely evil gave him some comfort. "If we are going to stop her, then we need an excellent plan and we need backup."
Manitou smiled. "I have woken your friends. They will find their way here."
Diana and Kara flew to the planned meeting place. It was a small uninhabited island in the Atlantic ocean. They'd been waiting a while with no response. "How long should we wait?"
Diana's eyes scanned over the water, which was surprisingly not that low over here considering the drought. "Let's give them a little more time."
Kara gave a nod, though waiting like this when her sister and her friends were in danger was difficult to do. Thankfully, they didn't have to wait much longer as a woman rose out of the water. She had radiant red hair, her eyes were a deep green.
As she neared them, the strange woman focused on Diana. "Praise Poseidon, it is you. I knew you would come. I knew you wouldn't leave us."
"It is good to see you, my friend." Diana motioned toward Kara. "This is Supergirl. We came as soon as we could. What has happened? In order for you to contact me this way, the situation must be grave."
Mera sighed, the anguish was clearly painted on her face. "I have never been so… ashamed of the land and the people I love. Our own kin have enslaved us. Forced to hide like eels in caves for years."
"Years?" Diana hadn't known that this had transpired for so long.
"It was too great a risk to send a message to you. It was only now I that I could. After we've finished the work, that witch made us do." Her voice became icy as she mentioned a witch.
Kara raised an eyebrow. "A witch? What happened?"
"It all began with Arthur's wish to protect our beloved people should Atlantis ever fall to the land dwellers. We were working on a plan. Should they ever find Atlantis, however that witch came to us. Arthur took to her at once. He ate up every word and promise that they will well care for his people. That was the last time I saw him. That was three years ago. She brought others with her. They called themselves Leviathan. Things only got worse when our own people splintered apart and our own from Venturia came, led by Clea. They made us slaves, forced us to work upon the pillars to hold Atlantis above." Mera growled. "She took my husband away from me… our king, our country. You came today. Now I have hope… now I have my anger back. I want justice! I want my husband! I want to go home!"
Leviathan was once again ruining innocent people's lives. Kara didn't know this woman or her people, but instantly she wanted to help her. She needed to make this better. "I promise we will free your people and your husband."
Diana nodded in agreement, "We will free them and Arthur, I swear it. You have my pledge, Mera as an Amazon. Is there a way we can get into the city?"
Mera gave a nod. "Yes, there are underground caverns. I will lead you to them. You'll have to go alone, I must watch over my people." Mera wished she could exact her revenge on this witch, but she had greater responsibilities. She led them under water till they came to a network of underground caverns. These caverns had air pockets. That would make things easier for Diana and Kara.
The two women headed deep into the cavern that Mera had shown them. The way was uneventful until Kara knew she heard something. "You hear that?"
Diana slowed to a stop as there was a silence between them. "Yes. Someone is up ahead."
Kara used her x-ray vision. She could see there were two figures there, both male. "It's only two of them. I think we can take them." They gave each other a firm nod before she quietly made their way up ahead and as they rounded the corner, Kara was met with a familiar face. "Leo!" She rushed to him and enveloped him in a tight hug. Only seeming to focus on Leo for the moment and not the strange man that was with him. She was relieved that someone she cared about was safe.
"Kara!" Leo soon found himself in Kara's arms. He hadn't seen her in months. He was glad to see her, and she was safe. He smiled and returned the hug before Kara pulled back to look at him.
It was only when she looked at him that she realized he wasn't as safe as she thought. "You're very pale…" She noted he had some sort of bandage across his chest. "Are you hurt?!" She didn't wait for a response but x-rayed his chest, only to discover his heart was missing. "Leo…" She gasped in horror.
"I know. We have a lot to talk about." His eyes then focused on Diana, and it brought another smile to his lips. "You're awake."
Diana smiled as she neared them both. "I am glad you are safe. I wasn't sure what happened to you and John."
Leo introduced Kara and Diana to Manitou. "This is Manitou. He's going to help us stop my mother."
Kara blinked. "Your mother?"
Leo rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah… you were unconscious when I told everyone. My birth mother is the leader of Levithan. She's a powerful magic user."
Kara nodded. "Ok, well then we will need everyone on deck if we are going to…"
Leo slowly began. "Well, there is also something else I need to tell you-"
Manitou cut Leo off. "Your friends are dead."
"What!? How!? When!?" Kara just woke up, only to be informed that her friends were dead.
Leo looked at Manitou, irritated. "We need to work on your explanations."
Manitou explained, "Their bodies are broken, but their spirit is what's important and they are safe, thanks to Leo."
Leo cleared his throat. "He took my heart and cast some spell…" Kara and Diana seemed shocked at this.
"How are you still standing and can he fix you?" Diana asked.
"I honestly don't know how I'm still standing. It's very odd. I'm not dead yet. I'm not alive either. Somewhere in between. Manitou said he can put my heart back in my body." Leo gave a little shudder, just thinking about his heart casually hanging in a bag on Manitou's belt.
Manitou gave a nod. "We must work together to stop Fey. She is bound to Atlantis when she raised it from below. Between her connection to the land and the power she has absorbed from her allies, she is a fearsome foe. No living being can resist her. This will be a tough battle."
"Mera, she said they had to build these large pillars to hold the city. It will be difficult to destroy them." Diana explained.
Manitou nodded. "We need to sink Atlantis, and there is only one person who can do so. The true King of Atlantis, he is waiting to help us."
Kara bit her bottom lip as she was in thought. Even if they sunk the city, they still had to contend with Leo's mother. "You said her spells are strong against the living… is there a way to fight her with the dead?"
Manitou stroked his chin, "Dangerous, your friends would become exposed. If I had the energy to forge them new vessels, perhaps, but the materials at hand…" He paused. "Your friends are eager to help. It's settled then."
"Ready to hit something, Diana?" Leo asked.
Diana grinned. "I'm done waiting. I'm ready to hit something." She cracked her knuckles. It was time to fix this.
Kara grinned. "Good, let's finish this."
Manitou, Leo, and Supergirl were standing out on the surface of Atlantis. The people must have been hiding, there was no sight of anyone. What they didn't know was that everyone was terrified of the witch. They saw her suck the life out of all the members of Leviathan except Queen Clea.
The scorching sun beat down on them while Manitou was sitting in the middle of some sort of ring. He had drawn symbols in the ground surrounding him. His eyes were closed as he was meditating and mumbling something incoherent. "It is done."
The bones of the Super Friends rose as Diana stepped alongside them. She waited until they were completely formed before they went to where the throne room was.
Just outside the throne room, there were bones. The bones of Fey's former allies, The Whaler, The Anointed One, and Gamemnae all drained of their powers. They now were a part of Fey.
Fey exited the throne room. "You've come to stop me?"
"You will pay for the crimes you've committed on this land. To these people!" Diana shouted.
Fey shook her head. "I've done everything for Atlantis! The land dwellers would have destroyed everything. My only option was to give Atlantis back the sky! I gave her the land, a new life! I will not allow you to let it sink back below the waves!" She snorted. "It's former King could not see the gift I was going to bestow on them. He loved the water so deeply that I married him to it and I replaced him with a ruler that was worthy of Atlantis." She smirked as she saw their feeble attempt. "What good will a handful of bones be against my power!"
Alex hissed, "You're about to find out!"
Fey snarled as her hands rose, then the ground began to ripple out toward them. The Super Friends scattered as they occupied Fey. Keeping her attention drawn on them while Supergirl, Leo, and Manitou continued with their other plan.
Queen Clea had her sights on Diana. She lunged at her, and Diana brought her blade up to block just in time. "Humm Amazon, let's see what you've got."
"That Trident does not belong to you." Diana pushed the sharp blade of the trident away from her and swung down quickly toward Clea.
"It does now…" She smirked. Easily blocking Diana's blade.
Manitou, Leo, and Supergirl ran to the pool that was holding the King of Atlantis. "Are you sure they will be alright?"
"She will soon find out that she won't be able to defeat the undead. The only way to kill undead enemies is to bring them back to life so you can kill them properly." Manitou explained, and soon they arrived at the pool.
"How do we know this will actually work?" Leo asked. Their entire plan hung on this moment.
"It will, Supergirl. Break the stone."
Within that moment, Supergirl clenched her fist and struck down into the stone. Each punch sending cracks down the side of the stone enclosure. Until finally the stone broke, the water inside the pool escape and flooded out into the sea.
Leo watched eagerly, and nothing happened. No King of Atlantis. "Manitou…"
"Patience…the sea knows her king… give it a moment."
"We should head back to the others. They will need our help one way or another." Supergirl stated. Of course, if this King of Atlantis didn't free himself from the water, could they beat Fey without his help?
The Super Friends were merely keeping Fey occupied. Of course, with her abilities she could block the attacks however, they were persistent. Green Lantern and Dreamer aimed their abilities on either side of Fey. Bolts of green and blue unleashed. Fey placed up a barrier to block the attacks, however it was at that moment that Guardian slammed her shield into her squarely.
J'onn gave Alex a firm toss into the air and Alex's boney foot made contact, sending Fey back down on the ground. She soon vanished like smoke and the Super Friends quickly dispersed. Electricity surrounded the area and even though the bolts struck their bones, that made little difference. She could not hurt them, not in the undead state they were in.
Wonder Woman and Queen Clea were still battling each other. The Amazon was fast, but Clea had the trident. She'd let this battle go on far enough. It was time to finish this. She put some distance between herself and Wonder Woman and built up energy in the trident. The trident glowed a steady golden color before she pointed it toward Wonder Woman. Energy sparked out and struck Wonder Woman, however Diana was ready. She raised her gauntlets up, her gauntlets absorbing the brunt of the attack.
"Impossible!" Clea hadn't known something existed that could block the power of the trident. She didn't have long to consider her options, as Diana was soon right on her. The blade slicing the air with a whoosh as Clea backed up. The blade sliced through some strands of Clea's blonde hair.
Diana blocked the counterattack with her sword before she twisted her blade downward and then with a swift motion swept her leg out, causing Clea to stumble onto the ground. Diana whipped out her lasso and within moments, she had Clea secured within the lasso. The woman yelled. "No!" She attempted to break out of the lasso that bound her, but it was impossible to break out of.
Fey soon reappeared, emerging seemingly out of thin air. She couldn't keep this up for long. As powerful as she was, eventually they would wear her down. Before the Super Friends could strike again, she healed them. Each of the hero's skin and flesh was being restored. Each person's skin and flesh was healed like new. Now she could kill them properly, so no one would bring them back. "Enjoy your last breaths of air! You'll never regain your strength in time to be a true threat!"
As Leo, Supergirl, and Manitou arrived, they saw Fey had healed them. All was going to plan, Manitou removed Leo's heart from the small sack on his belt. "Hold still…" He spoke a spell before he pressed Leo's heart back into his body.
Leo let out a gasp and looked down after Manitou was done. Everything seemed to be back to normal and Leo no longer had the pale dead man walking look anymore.
Before Fey could strike at the now healed Super Friends, there was a rumbling. At first the group wondered if it had been an earthquake, but their answer soon came. The water rose around Atlantis, forming itself into the shape of a gigantic man. The water spoke with authority and yelled. "Fey! Traitoress of Atlantis and all who dared to follow her! The true King of Atlantis calls you forth for judgment!"
Dreamer let out a low whistle of amazement. "Wow…"
Brainy nodded in agreement. "He's a water wraith now. His body is the entire ocean."
Alex nodded. "Yeah, and the ocean is very pissed off. Let's get everyone to safety and get the hell out of here before he sinks us back into the ocean."
Fey scoffed. "You wanted to keep your people in the depths of the sea. Atlantis deserves to live in the light. I gave them strength! Under you, they will just become fish forced to feed on the bottom." Fey was rather indignant. She couldn't comprehend her own logic anymore. She was buried under all these personalities. So what came out was everyone else but herself.
King Arthur was furious. "You made me suffer for years! What's worse is you made my people slaves! We are not ready to rise! Atlantis will be great someday. I know it in my heart." The water wraith sunk back into the ocean and Arthur pummeled the massive stone pillars that held up the city. Each massive strike made the ground of Atlantis rumble and shudder. Arthur soon broke the pillars, and the city sank.
The Super Friends evacuated the land as it was slowly sinking. Diana took her prisoner along with the trident to a nearby island where they could take shelter. Leo, however, didn't want to leave, and Manitou knew he had to finish this. Supergirl stood beside Leo. She hoped Fey would surrender.
Fey attempted to keep the city afloat with her powers, but the spells were breaking. Her connection to the land was gone. She saw her son and Manitou. This was all Manitou's fault. "Are you proud, Manitou? You've ruined everything! You've turned my son against me!"
"Mom, please stop this… I'm begging you. I want you in my life, mom. If you just surrender, we can have that, just please." Leo hoped he could reach his mother somehow, but Manitou was convinced she was gone. There had to be a part of her in there. Somewhere beneath all that mess.
Fey hesitated, her mind a jumbled mess of emotions and memories. The stronger emotions of hate overcame her. "I will not surrender."
Manitou raised his ax. "I am ashamed of the part I played in this… but I will repent with word and deed. Inukchuk!" He ran and jumped at her before he vanished into a swarm of ravens. Fey's powers had drained, she'd lost her connection to the land, and she'd grown even weaker attempting to keep the city afloat. Yet Fey still managed to cast a basic protection spell in front of her.
Fey raised her hand up, creating a barrier in front of her to block any attacks. When Manitou vanished, she furrowed her eyebrows. Her eyes widened when she realized he had gotten behind her. She realized too late as she soon felt the blade of the ax strike her from behind. Fey cried out as she fell. She felt someone above her and as her eyes opened; she saw Leo.
Leo was kneeling on the ground, his arms holding her. "Mom…"
"Leo… I'm so sorry…. I-I never… meant to hurt you… to hurt anyone…" She raised her hand up and gently pressed it against his cheek. She could feel his face was wet with tears.
"I forgive you…" Leo whispered. He could feel the water of the ocean climbing. It was now up to his thighs. Fey's hand soon fell from Leo's cheek as she died. Leo felt Kara's hand grip his shoulder, and he looked up at her. They held each other's gaze and he could feel her sympathy.
"Leo…" What could Kara say to Leo? He'd lost his mother a second time. Once when he was 4 and now all these years later. This time it was more painful, tragic. She wished she could take away his pain, his grief.
Leo carefully let his mother's body go and watched as her body sank into the water before looking up at Kara and took a deep breath. "Let's go…"
The world had water again, everything was back as it should be. Even though the world below the waves would never be the same. King Arthur imprisoned Clea for her crimes and Arthur had regained his normal appearance after Fey's death. After the battle Manitou vanished, he had redeemed himself for his actions. Back at the tower, things were solemn.
Yes, they had saved the world. They had won, yet Leo was still dealing with the fact that he had gained and lost his mother again. He was leaning against the balcony looking out toward National City. He heard someone come behind him, but he didn't make any motion to look to see who it was.
"You're not alone…" Supergirl said as she attempted to reassure him.
Leo looked at Kara. "I probably deserve this… after all the bad things I've done in my past…"
"Leo!" Kara interrupted. "You've been through so much, but you do not deserve this. I know you've struggled to redeem yourself and I think you have. You've grown so much and I know I've pushed you the most, but that is only because I-I… believe in you."
Leo turned and straightened up. "You believe in me? Shouldn't I be the one saying that to you? You're the hero, after all."
Kara smiled before she wrapped her arms around Leo, hugging him tightly. She felt his arms wrap around her as they embraced. Kara closed her eyes. "Thank you… Kara." They slowly parted and Leo's feelings flared, his heart beating just a bit faster. He was sure Kara could hear it. He'd missed her more than he realized, and as they parted, they both lingered a bit, staying in contact with each other before Leo and Kara rested their hands back to their sides.
Kara shifted a bit uneasily, "Well… I am going to go home… I'm exhausted. I'll see again… right?"
Leo smiled. "Of course you'll see me again." Kara gave a nod and smiled before she walked away, leaving Leo alone. Leo leaned his back against the railing of the balcony, letting out a slow sigh. He wasn't alone for long as Diana soon approached and little did he know she had seen the embrace Kara and Leo had exchanged. She had left them alone until Kara had left. "Diana."
Diana smiled, attempting to reassure him. "I am sorry for your loss. I wished things could have ended better."
"Thank you… at least she is at peace now." Leo replied. "Are you staying?"
Diana smiled. "I think I should be on my way."
Leo looked surprised. "You're leaving?"
"Leo Luthor, I do care for you, but I see now that your heart belongs to another. She's a good woman." Diana admitted and while she wanted to stay and find out what could be with Leo, she knew she did not have his whole heart.
"You mean Kara?" Leo shook his head. "Kara and I are-"
Diana interrupted him. "You care for her." Diana gently raised her hand and gently caressed Leo's cheek. "You attempt to hide it, but it's clear to see…"
Leo bit his tongue lightly. She was right, he was in love with Kara. "Diana, I-I want you to know that… I do care for you as well, it's just…" He looked for the words, but Diana seemed to already know. It didn't mean nothing and he wished the best for Diana. She deserved the world, and she deserved to be happy. His heart ached to see her go, but he understood.
"I know…" Perhaps in a different life or a different time, but they shared a connection. A connection Leo couldn't explain, but his heart loved Kara as well. As much as it pained him to choose, he had to let Diana go. Perhaps one day they could rekindle their friendship.
"Will I see you again?"
Diana's smile held a hint of sadness. "You shall, my friend. I wish you the best."
"Goodbye Diana…" Leo whispered as Diana's hand slowly fell from his face. He watched the strong Amazonian walk away, and Leo knew now that he had to find Kara. It was time they actually had a serious talk.
It was late, and Kara was looking forward to lounging with some cookies and ice cream. She had on a nice comfy shirt and some sweatpants on. It was then that she heard a knock on her door. She lazily stood up, not bothering to x-ray vision the door, however Leo was standing on the other side after she opened it. "Leo!" She gawked. "Are you alright?"
Leo gave a nod, "I'm fine Kara. I just. I know it's late but there is something important I think we should discuss. Is it alright if I come in?" Kara nodded and let Leo come in.
"What did you want to discuss?" Kara asked.
Leo looked down at Kara before he frowned. "Well, I do have a confession. I told you that I wasn't going to lie to you again but I have… remember when you asked if I just wanted to be friends. I lied. I lied to push you away because I was trying to protect you. Hearing that you die because we're together, I wanted to do whatever I could to protect you but… Kara I…"
"I miss you too." Kara admitted, causing Leo to look up and lock eyes with her. "I love you Leo. I still do." Kara wrapped her arms around Leo's neck and gently, but firmly, pulled him toward her. Her lips tenderly slipped onto his. Leo froze for a brief moment, but he slowly returned the kiss. His hands settled onto her waist as they shared a tender kiss.
The kiss broke, but they kept inches apart. Kara whispered. "I know you're scared. I'm scared too, but I've seen a glimpse of our future together and I want to be with you. I want us. Whatever happens, we will do this together. We've always gotten through any problems with each other."
Leo leaned his forehead against hers. "El Mayarah." It was settled whatever happened, whatever choices or decisions that they made, they were going to get through this together.
Leo stayed with Kara that night, he was currently grabbing some chocolate chip cookies from the kitchen for a midnight snack before he came back to bed. He slid in under the covers and Kara eagerly grabbed a cookie from the small plate he had in hand, and took a bite. "Humm, I've missed this. Missed you."
Leo smiled. "I've missed you too." He pressed a kiss against her cheek. "It has been too long."
"What's it like up on the space station?" Kara asked, curiously. Leo had spent most of their time apart on that space station he bought.
"You can see the whole Earth from up there. It's beautiful. It's not finished completely yet. It's supposed to be a station to defend and protect Earth, but if any government found out about The Watchtower, then they'd either want to control it or destroy it." Leo ate another chocolate chip cookie. "I can't manage it alone, though. All I have is Diggle with me. I'm sure Brainy will help, he's been dying to get his hands on it."
Kara took another cookie while she thought. "I guess we need someone trustworthy to help us look after it. We need a team or a group."
"Or a league…"
"A league of heroes…." Kara began as her head was already spinning a mile a minute as she thought about the possibilities.
Leo slowly chewed on the cookie he had. "Heroes… like Superheroes?"
Kara nodded excitedly. "Yes! Leo, think about it. We have the perfect base for superheroes. They can help defend and protect Earth from any threat."
Leo finished the cookie and glanced down at the now empty plate before he set it aside. "I mean, we'd have to find and recruit people, but it's going to take time to find heroes."
Kara seemed to believe this was the right direction. "Barry, Kate, and I already established a team, but since Oliver and Kate are gone, we will need more members. The Justice League. The Watchtower will make a perfect base."
"I guess we have a lot of work to do, then. We're out of cookies too." Leo went to get up, but he felt Kara push him down firmly on the bed. Gosh, she was strong, she barely had to use any effort.
"We do but…" Kara slowly climbed on top of Leo, the covers no longer covering her naked body. She slowly leaned down her lips pressing a soft kiss against his collarbone. Kara's soft warm lips traveling along his skin up his neck to her lover's lips. "We have more pressing matters…"
Kara gently nipped at Leo's lower lip, she definitely had Leo right where she wanted him. Leo leaned forward to kiss Kara but Kara inched away. Keeping their lips just inches away. "Kara…" Leo almost begged.
"Yes?" Her voice held a mischievous and yet playful tone.
"You tease…" Leo slowly ran his fingers along Kara's hips but he soon felt Kara reach back and easily pin his hands above his head. His lover was easily taking control. Kara was powerful and utterly sexy and he was completely putty in her hands. "I love you."
Kara smiled, "I love you, too." With that she finally kissed him deeply.
Year: 2046
It was a very sunny day and the Danvers-Luthor family were taking a much needed vacation. Kara and Leo were currently relaxing on a private beach. They placed their lounge beach chairs next to each other on the sandy beach. Leo had his sunglasses on while he layed back and watched the waves. His children were currently out having a swim, huge smiles plastered on their faces.
They weren't so young anymore, when did that happen? They grew up so fast. Alura was already 20, Jeremiah 19, and the twins Emma and Harvey, 16 and ready to learn to drive.
"You asleep?" Kara asked.
"Humm just woke up…" Leo stretched his arms above his head before he felt Kara gently run her hand through Leo's hair affectionately.
"You've been working hard lately. Especially since your nephew arrived…"
Leo let out a frustrated groan. "Don't get me started Kara… I might go mental thinking about Alexander Luthor." Of course, Lillian gave her grandson shares in Luthor Corp.
"Well, I think we've all needed a family vacation. Who knows when we'll be able to all be together again…" Jeremiah was going out of state to college. Kara had been so used to having everyone together, the thought of their family getting smaller made her sad. They spent years slowly growing there family now it was shrinking again.
"I'll miss him too. No more talk about Jeremiah going off to college right now let's just enjoy our vacation. No technology, completely cut off from the world." Leo stated and leaned forward, giving Kara a loving kiss.
Kara smiled, returning the kiss, but they had spoken too soon. Soon, a metal sphere about the size of a tennis ball appeared and landed right in front of Leo and Kara in the sand. A scripted JL appeared on the metal. Leo sighed. "You know, even on vacation they still manage to find us."
Kara sighed. "Well, I suppose we should find out what's up. They went through the trouble of finding us." Kara stood up and grabbed the sphere and waited for Leo before they headed back into the beach house. They went into the basement and after a few moments Leo plugged in the computer and powered it on. All that trouble of going offline. Kara placed the sphere into the terminal of the computer and soon they made contact with The Watchtower. "Watchtower, this is Supergirl and Leo. What's the situation?"
Brainy's voice came over the speaker. "I know you two are on vacation, but a situation has come up. A few hours ago, we received reports of a creature attacking Metropolis. We sent a team led by Wonder Woman and Green Lantern. They are requesting backup and emergency medical attention. Superman is already on his way, but I think you should lend assistance."
Leo's face grew white at this news. Could this be the creature that kills Kara? The one that the Monitor warned them about. If Diana needed backup, then this creature must be extremely resilient and strong. "What about civilians?" Leo asked.
Brainy answered. "I've already sent multiple teams down to help with evacuations of civilians."
"We'll be there soon." Kara answered before she disconnected from the call. Kara looked at Leo, this could be the incident. The day she died. "I…"
"I know. I know you have to go." Leo turned to look at her. "We need to get something at Luthor Corp. I built you a suit. Alexander Jr. isn't the only reason why I've been working late. It's taken me years to develop and perfect. If it can take Superman's and Diana's punches, then I'm sure it can take whatever this creature can throw at you."
Kara gave a small smile and walked toward her husband. Her hands carefully taking hold of his and giving them a squeeze. "You never told me you were working on that."
"I was hoping you wouldn't have to use it." He took in a shaky breath and, to be honest both were a little scared. Scared that the future they were trying to prevent would end up coming true. "Come back to me."
"Always." Kara leaned forward and pressed her lips to Leo's. It was a very loving yet sad kiss. The fact that this could be their last moments together was not something they wanted to face. Together, they had to face this. Kara leaned her forehead against Leo's as they lingered in each other's arms before they held hands and quickly got ready to leave. They went out to talk to their children.
As they got back to the beach, they waved their children in. They came up soaking wet from the water. Harvey was the first to voice his opinion. "Are we in trouble? I swear I haven't done anything."
Kara smiled. "No, you aren't in trouble. Something came up, so your father and I need to leave and assist the League."
The kids looked concerned. The Justice League was getting a hold of their parents while they were on vacation? "Is everything alright?" Jeremiah asked.
"Nothing to be concerned about. Everything is going to be fine." Leo stated, trying to reassure them. "We'll be back before you know it. They just need our specialized talents for something that can't wait."
Emma asked. "So you'll be back in a few hours then?"
Kara nodded. "Yes, we'll be back and our vacation will be back on schedule. We have to have our family game night!"
Harvey nodded. "Humm you two can't be on a team together."
Kara and Leo blinked. "Why?" They both asked.
Harvey answered, "It's too OP! It's like cheating!" The rest of the kids nodded in agreement.
Kara and Leo laughed. "Alright go on! Continue playing! Behave yourselves." Leo stated, and then Harvey, Emma, and Jeremiah ran back into the water.
Alura, however, didn't rush back with her siblings. "What's really going on? The League hardly ever calls you guys unless it's end of the world stuff. Not just a quick little assist." She crossed her arms, not buying the nonchalant attitude.
Kara smiled at her daughter. "I need to help your uncle and if everything goes according to plan, then I will be back within a few hours."
"Look, maybe I can help…"
Leo gently placed his hand on Alura's shoulder and gave a gentle squeeze. "What we need you to do right now is just watch your brothers and sister. I promise that if we need anything else we'll let you know."
Alura gently bit her bottom lip before she nodded. "Aright, I'll see you guys soon then." Their oldest could be very intuitive. She seemed to have a knack for reading people. Kara and Leo watched as their daughter headed in the water with her siblings. Now, though, it was time to get to work.
With Kara's speed of flying, it didn't take them too long to pick up the special suit from Luthor Corp and then land in Metropolis. After Kara landed, there was a great deal of damage to the city. Some small fires and emergency personnel were around dealing with trying to assist the injured and contain the fires.
Leo and Kara spotted multiple members of the Justice League lending assistance. Leo and Kara soon spotted a familiar face. Diana was greatly injured as she was hobbling and arguing with a medical personnel from the Justice League. "You need to let me take a look at you. I've already sent the rest of your team back to The Watchtower. You need medial attention." The woman medic insisted.
Leo and Kara approached. "You should listen to her."
Diana turned and saw her companions. "Leo! Kara!" Diana looked at Kara. "Do not hold back when you engage that creature. It is not interested in your mercy. All it wants is to destroy everything. It is nothing more than a monster. Be careful, Kara."
Kara nodded, "I understand." She could hear what sounded like fighting from not too far away. No doubt that was Clark and the creature. She turned, looking in the distance before the helmet enclosed over her head. Supergirl lifted off and headed into battle.
Leo watched as his wife took off, they had done all they could. Now it was up to Kara and Clark to take this creature down. Leo examined Diana, who was bruised, bleeding and standing on one leg. He wouldn't be surprised if she had some broken bones as well. "You should sit down." He knew she wouldn't abandon the battlefield. Not while Superman and Supergirl were still fighting.
"I'm not leaving."
"I know." Leo hooked his arm around her and she hooked hers around his neck, using him for support as he led her to an ambulance. The back doors of the ambulance were open, and he helped her sit down off the back of it. The medic from the Justice League was relieved that Leo seemed to calm Diana down. At least Diana was more agreeable.
As Supergirl flew into the fray, she saw the creature for the first time. Monster was an effect description. It was massive, at least 7 feet tall, and had enough muscle that he was built like a tank. She could see the massive sharp spikes protruding through his skin. He was about to strike Superman when Kara slammed her fist into his side, sending him barrelling back and crashing into a nearby building. "Clark! Are you alright?"
Superman nodded, blood was dripping down his brow, and he had cuts along his arms. "Nice timing." His eyes focused on Doomsday. "The sun. I can launch him up but I'll need help getting him there." Clark had sustained some serious injuries; he'd been fighting Doomsday a lot longer and trying to keep as many innocent civilians out of the way.
Supergirl gave a nod. "Let's do it."
Superman's eyes widened as Doomsday's eyes glowed red. "Watch out!" Superman yelled as Doomsday shot his heat vision at his new opponent. Kara raised her hands up, crossing them together as the beam hit her. She was flung backward and collided into a concrete building. She grunted, thankfully the suit took most of the impact but she still felt it.
Ok now she was ticked off. Doomsday jumped toward Superman ready to slam down into him. Superman moved quickly and grabbed a steel beam and swung like a baseball bat. He hit Doomsday right in the chest, sending him soaring.
Kara took flight, charging as fast as she could, her arm preparing to strike again. She hit hard, helping launch Doomsday up higher. Superman flew behind Supergirl and after she launched Doomsday up, he flew after him to launch him again. As Superman went to strike him again to send him higher into the atmosphere, it seemed Doomsday was figuring out what they were doing. He grabbed Superman and smacked him in the jaw multiple times as they started to descend back to earth.
Supergirl gritted her teeth. "No, you don't!" She yelled as she flew into him, grabbing him by the white locks of hair that covered the top of his head and she tossed him back down. So much for launching him into the sun, he was smarter than she realized. Doomsday collided into the street below, and Supergirl and Superman charged after him.
Supergirl was the first to come after Doomsday as he was just getting onto his feet. He blocked her punch, catching her one fist, and then blocked her other punch. Supergirl struggled as she pushed against the creature's strength. The pavement cracking underneath their feet. Doomsday then head-butted Kara shattering the helmet and Supergirl fell backward just enough for Doomsday to raise his foot and kick her backward.
Supergirl collided into a truck. Kara could feel something dripping down her brow and at first she thought it was sweat, but no this was different. It was her blood.
Superman gritted his teeth as he lunged toward Doomsday, raising his fist. Doomsday roared and charged at Superman. Each of their fists collided into each other's face. The shockwave of the punch breaking the glass along the skyscrapers. Superman blocked the next punch before attacking again they went back and forth before Doomsday grabbed Superman's cape. He tugged hard before wrapping it around his neck and then landed a hard kick into his back.
Supergirl removed her crushed helmet and clenched her fists. She had to end this, it was up to both of them. No matter what. Supergirl charged, using her ability of flight to push herself as fast as she could go, her fists slammed into Doomsday's head. The impact snapping his neck back as Supergirl flew through her punch. She stopped after he fell down motionless. Was it over? She let out a shaky breath, her hands shaking slightly. She had broken through the suit; her knuckles were raw and bloody.
Superman struggled to stand, but eventually he rose to his feet. He looked down at Doomsday. They did it, he was dead. "Are you alright, Kara?" When Kara didn't respond, Superman repeated. "Kara?"
Supergirl snapped out of her daze. "Yeah… I'm alright." It was then that she heard someone coming, footsteps frantically running down the pavement. She saw Leo and immediately went to him.
They immediately embraced, and Leo was soon immediately looking at Kara's injuries. "You're… you're…" He couldn't find the words, but was moved with relief. He laughed a bit as some tears came to his face. She was alive.
Kara let out a little laugh as well, her eyes watery, she could only hold Leo. They made it, and it wouldn't have happened if they hadn't worked together. They endured and they survived. Together.
Author's Note:
I could have gone many different ways on this one. I bounced back a number of different outcomes but I finally settled on this ending. This one has been a great journey. I think it got better as I went along. It's not perfect but there are moments that I really enjoyed. It definitely hasn't been easy with this fic, I've gotten some disgust but we pushed though it and I've completed the fic. I'm looking forward to the future projects that I got in the works. Thank you to all who've stayed with me till the end I know I've had some super long updates but I'm super happy I've finished it. We can close the book on this one.
