"No," warned the cop, and the room seemed to swirl around Leon in a dizzying kaleidoscope of colors. "First you need to tell me what y'all are doing out here alone in the middle of the night, all right?"
The air suddenly a thick, gagging slime but Piper narrowed her eyes at the cop, he seemed to be as sour as an old pickle. "Us?" Asked Piper as the four of them stood beneath overhead fluorescents that fought a losing battle, literal dying of the light, as some tubes flickered warnings of imminent failure. The incessant buzzing threatened to scour from the troubled mind any last vestiges of sanity. "What about you?"
"It's my job, little lady!" Snapped the cop. "Why don't you do your job and tell me?"
"Are we getting paid?"
"Answer my damned questions!"
A sour half-laugh came from Leon's mouth. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you," sighed Leon.
"Try me." The door behind the officer began to lower. "Hey! You two, put that door back up! Put that door back up right now!"
"Wait! Wait!" Screamed Leon but it had been too late, a shovel went through the head of the cop, spraying Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy in his blood. The police officer fell to the ground and the father lowered the shovel, cutting him up with the shovel as if he hadn't noticed the blood soaked family. Leon ran and grabbed the gun.
"Fuck it! I'm gonna kill every one of you!" Growled the father as Leon, Piper and Emma got into the car that was parked in the garage. The father turned and saw the Kennedy's huddled in the car as Leon tried to hot wire the car. The father ran over, banging the bloody shovel on the car.
The car came to life, and Leon sat up right behind the wheel. "If you do not run that psycho over, move over, dear!" Said Piper. Leon pressed the accelerator to the floor and ran the father over, and backed the car up only to see the father get up once more. "Again!"
"Motherfuck!" Laughed the father once standing again. Leon slammed on the gas again. "You do got some balls, boy!" He slammed into the father again, but he jumped over the car, landing on the roof, mere moments later, he ripped the roof off of the car.
"Daddy!" Screamed Emma.
"Oh shit!" Screamed Leon as he drove in reverse.
They smashed into the wall, and the father put the car into drive, Leon's foot never leaving the gas. "Where'd you learn to drive?" The father chuckled.
"Fuck!" Screamed Leon.
Leon finally slammed on the break. "Let's finish this, you and I!" Growled the father, his upper lip curling into a sneer. He grabbed an axe off of the shelf they had rammed into.
"No…No!" Screamed Leon.
Leon Kennedy shut his eyes when the father swung the axe right at his face, but he never felt the stinging sensation of the blade in his face, rather he heard the roar of a chainsaw. Leon opened his eyes to see a dying chainsaw gnawing through the man's skull, and Piper's front coated in blood.
The Kennedy family exited the car, Piper throwing a match, they backed up and watched as the car became engulfed in flames. He wrapped his arms around his family, it was all over, they just needed to find Hazel, and they could escape this nightmare.
They heard the car door open from within the flames. "Oh! Come on!" Cried Leon as they watched as the father, on fire, stumbled out from the car. He took two head shots on the father before the father fell to his knees and collapsed.
"Daddy, look!" Chirped Emma, pointing to a ladder. The Kennedy's went towards the ladder, Piper going first, then Emma, and Leon would take up the rear. They followed a cat walk before jumping down where the door was for the garage.
"Look what I found, Piper, I found the horses head," said Leon, showing his wife what he had found. The Kennedy's scurried through the house, locating the door once more; Leon smashed the head onto the body, and the door gave way - to a sitting area, with two staircases. "I was hoping this would lead us outside."
The phone on a small side table began to cry out, and Leon hurried to it. He picked it up and before he could even say hello, the voice on the other end spoke to him. "Did my daddy give you a hard time?"
"He's your father?"
"He used to be."
"I'm sorry…but…he…my wife…he's dead."
"The Kennedy's might just be able to pull this off!"
"What?" Asked Leon. "Pull what off?"
"There's something I need you to do…but I can't explain it right now," said the voice, which was now barely audible. "What needs to happen first is for you and your family to find a way of that house."
"Uh, yeah."
"I'll be in touch."
The phone hung up and Leon hung up his end. Piper was by his side. "Emma said we need to find the head of a dog to get out of here."
"Mommy! Daddy!" Cried Emma, and both parents spun around to see their little girl going through an old wardrobe. "I found a puppy head for the door!"
Emma brought over the dog's head to Leon who smashed it into the door. But it did not unlock, there were two key holes. "Of course," Piper groaned. She followed her husband and daughter up one of the staircases. At the end of the hallway was the old woman Leon had been seated next to, her blue eyes sparkled in a face full of wrinkles under a head of hair as soft as dandelion fluff.
She didn't make a sound nor did she try to reach out and grab the family, she seemed harmless enough, which the family appreciated. Emma pushed the door next to her open and the old woman lurched forward and grabbed Piper's arm, making her yelp in surprise. "She's in my bedroom," the old woman croaked out. "She's safe."
Though she never said the name Harper, they knew exactly who she was talking about. "Where is the old lady's bedroom?" Asked Leon once they went through the door which had led them into another hallway chockfull of more house.
Piper shrugged and then tossed her log black hair back so that it cascaded in think chunks down her back, falling like heavy smoke. "I was never allowed to leave the basement," she sighed, looking at a table that was cluttered with photos.
They all heard a voice, and scurried out onto the balcony to see the wife…the mother…outside by an old trailer, swinging a lantern around. The sight of another family member made Leon's throat feel dry and tight. The Kennedy's ended up as confused as a cow in a parking lot trying to figure out exactly what she was doing.
They scurried back inside, afraid of being seen by the mumbling mad woman that was criss crossing the yard, through the tall grass like a venomous snake, silent and fierce. Terror had robbed Emma and Piper of their ability to think of their next move. The wind howled through the open windows, but they all silently agreed that all they needed to do now was find Harper and get the hell out of there.
