Vergil arrived at the scene of Hiei in action, fists blurred as he engaged in combat with some opponent, who nearly matched him in every blow.
A human, Vergil realized. Hiei was fighting a human. And not in the easy, almost careless way he ended the scum he found at the tip of his blade, but like this human was a challenge. Like he was one of Sensui's ilk.
But Vergil knew that this boy wasn't one of Sensui's. If he was, Vergil would have easily been able to pick his energy out from the crowd. There was something about it, he mused. Something off, compared to the other spiritually aware humans he'd met…
The human paused mid-blow, stepping back and looking in Vergil's direction.
"Uh, Hiei?" the guy said, "I think there's someone following you."
Vergil took that as his clue to touch down on the ground, landing neatly and shifting back into his human form.
Hiei growled.
"Didn't I tell you to stay put?" he said.
Vergil merely smirked.
"Indeed, you did. And yet, idle human curiosity tends to win out most of the time, against my better judgment. And when my so-called ally runs off to make a deal with some human behind my back…"
Hiei grunted.
"This doesn't concern you, half-breed."
"Yeah, dude," the kid said. "Calm your tits. Hiei takes allying with people seriously. If he likes you enough to work with you, he won't screw you over. It's against his honor code."
"Oh, indeed?" Vergil said, drawing the Yamato. "Then tell me, Hiei. Why are you cavorting with this… human child?"
"Were you even listening to anything I just said?" the kid said, clenching his fists "Look, dude. I'm in a mighty pissed off mood, and you insulting my friend's honor is making me even more pissed off. So if it's a fight you're looking for, I'm more than happy to kick your ass. Got it?"
"Fool!" Hiei said, stepping in between him and Vergil. "Don't try to pick fights you cannot win. Especially when you have bigger and better foes to fight."
"Wait," the kid said, "So you'll actually help me get Kuwabara back?"
Hiei tsked.
"I'm just curious as to the contents of the Chapter Black tape. That's all."
So the human was going after Sensui as well, then. Vergil was mildly curious as to whether he thought he could succeed at his current level of strength. If he could barely beat Sniper, how would he have any hope against Sensui's power?
Vergil snorted.
"The Chapter Black tape is nothing worth watching," Vergil cut in.
"You've watched it?" the kid said.
"The contents of the tape are nothing in comparison to the exploits of the highest ranking demons of the demon realm," Vergil continued, ignoring the human boy. "The deaths of every human on that tape are infinitesimal compared to the scores of demons the kings have massacred just to claim their bloody thrones."
"Well that's sure a morbid-ass way to put it," the kid said. "How'd you get your hands on the tape anyway? I doubt everyone's favorite bitchy toddler let you have it scot-free."
"What toddler?" Vergil asked, narrowing his eyes.
"Koenma, the ruler of the Spirit World," Hiei said. "Yusuke here happens to be his detective."
"Really, now?" Vergil said, "So why are you suggesting we work with him? Didn't you just tell me you wished to avoid the Spirit World at all costs?"
"That was before I discovered our goals aligned, you fool. We all wish for Shinobu Sensui's defeat. Wouldn't it be more prudent to combine forces? Especially since it's obvious that he outclasses us individually."
"That much is obvious," Vergil said. "I just thought you'd be smarter than to ally with people who lack the power to stand on their own against Sensui's might, Jagan Master."
"Hey, just because I can't beat Sensui doesn't mean I can't beat you up if I wanted to!" the kid said.
"Yusuke," Hiei cut in, sending him a glare.
Yusuke rolled his eyes.
"What? You know I could. I bet this guy's nothing compared to Toguro."
"He would surprise you, then, " Hiei said. "As would the detective, half-breed. I would reconsider refusing to work with him, if I were you. For a human, he is an extremely skilled fighter."
"Yeah, being human doesn't mean I'm weak," Yusuke said. "I keep kicking your ass, right Hiei?"
"Hn," Hiei said. "I had a narrow lead in our last fight, and you know it."
"Yeah, but I kept up just fine! Trust me, if I spent just a bit more time getting my ass beaten in by the Old Hag, I'd hand your ass to you on a silver platter."
Hiei smirked.
"You can try," he said. "But you'll fail."
"If that's what helps you sleep at night, keep thinking that." Yusuke said,
He turned to Vergil.
"So, rich guy," he said. "What'd Sensui do to piss you off?"
"Give me a good reason to tell you, and perhaps I will say," Vergil replied. "Personally, I'd rather not reveal my motivations to a weakling."
The kid smiled.
"Weakling, huh? How about this: if I kick your ass in a fair fight, you tell me everything. And if you kick my ass, we leave you alone and you can go off and do whatever. How does that sound?"
Vergil was just about to refuse when Hiei gave him a look.
"You should accept, half-breed," Hiei said. "Even if Yusuke is a fool for using up all of his spirit energy in petty fights instead of saving it for important things."
"Making new friends is important, Hiei. If I didn't beat you the first time we met, we wouldn't have been friends either."
Vergil sighed, and grit his teeth.
"Fine. I accept. But under no circumstances will I become your friend."
"Great!" Yusuke said, backing away. "So, you want to go all out, or do you just want a no-powers smackdown? Because I'm good with either. A fight's a fight to me."
Vergil smiled thinly.
"Hm…" Vergil said. "I suppose I wouldn't need demonic energy to defeat an enemy of your caliber."
Yusuke laughed.
"Oh, you'll change your tune after I'm done with you," he said, cracking his knuckles. "Trust me."
Then Yusuke rushed at him.
Sorry about the delay! This has been written for a while, I've just been SUPER busy.
Hope you guys enjoy!
