Chell's Afterlife – 3

"There you are." The turret says.

I hear footsteps just before I hear shooting.
"Ahhhh! What the hell! Stop shooting at me! I'm unarmed!" I hear someone yell, another voice…
I quickly unscrew one of the screws holding the turret together, this deactivates it.
"Malfunction!" the turret says just before it shuts down.
"Who the hell are you?!" I hear the voice yell, I look, but there's no person there. I am however on a street in a small town, destroyed or not, the buildings are relatively intact. The person, who's voice is male, must be ducked into an ally.

I'm not sure if I should answer him or not. I didn't talk at Aperture, and that was because I didn't want those machines to beat me, but what about out here? Should I talk?
"I'm a marksman, if you don't answer me I'll put a bullet between your eyes." His threats didn't scare me, they-
Wait…
"You just said you're unarmed," I tell him, he can't shoot me if he's unarmed.
"Well…I can…craaaap!" I smirk, and it's maybe my first laugh in years, but I think this guy is funny. I'll talk to him.

"Okay, I'm coming out, just…just don't hurt me, okay?" he asks, he sounds like he's in his late teens. I remember being that young, granted I was trapped inside Aperture, even so, I remember it.
"It's fine, I CAN'T hurt you, I don't have a weapon." I need to make a friend out here, so I want him to not be afraid of me.
"Yes you do, you have a gun, I can clearly see it, we all can, you're holding one." He's talking about Ash.
"It doesn't shoot bullets, come on out." I want to see who I'm talking to.

Peeking his head out, and eventually leaving his hiding spot is a scrawny man in, as I guessed, his late teens/early adulthood, maybe 20. He has short blond hair and seems kind of short, maybe even shorter then me. But I guess that isn't saying much since I'm older then him and I'm 5'8. He slowly walks towards me until I realize, oh yeah, he's afraid of Ash, so I lower my arm to make him feel safer. He smiles and speeds up a little bit, but not very much, he still has about 31' and 6" to walk to get to me.
"Just answer me one thing." He says as he makes his way in my direction.
"And what's that?" I ask.
"Is your name Chell?"

The short man and the woman stand staring at the cave.
"She's gone," The man says.
"Really? I didn't already guess that from NOT seeing her here." The second remarks a bit sarcastically, "I mean it's not like-"
The two stop for a moment as they receive information via telepathy. The man looks up at the woman.
"She's in the town of Lobella, let's go."

"What?" I ask, how did this kid know my name?!
"I'm asking what your name is, it's important." He looks nervous, he better, I want an explanation.
"I'm not answering until you explain how you know that name!" I'm beginning to become annoyed. The kid sighs, then starts talking.
"Fine, I'm asking you if you're Chell because she just yesterday was able to escape the Aperture Science building. Despite the rogue sentient AI running the place, she defeated it and made it out."

Oh, okay, this is less creepy then I expected. I keep forgetting that what I did might be considered a big deal to other people.

"Supposing I were who you think I am, what would happen?" I don't exactly want to get hung if that's what this person has in mind.
"Actually, there's a place in town set up for her. I've been watching her through the cameras that've been hacked. She's a hero around here." He talked about me with admiration, it was nice change of pace compared to all the insults I got about being fat or adopted. Plus I'm not even fat, so insults like that didn't make any sense.
"Then yes, I'm Chell. Sorry about the secrecy, but a girl needs her privacy." His face lit up like Wheatley's flashlight, now he's typing onto a keypad thing he wears around his wrist.
"I'd like you to meet a couple people."

I look around and see about 20 people emerging from individual hiding places in the area surrounding me. Now not all of them are walking towards me, they mostly look like they're just returning to their schedules, 4 people however do walk over to me. The first is a woman that looks my age, if not then older, she has blonde hair and looks impressed to meet me.
"Nice ta meech ya, the name's Mel," She holds out her hand for me to shake, I comply. "I didn't think anyone else would make it outta there." She's confusing me.
"You escaped that place?" I ask, if she did then I want to know how.
"Yep, back when the big bad took over. You kin thank my dad fur that one."
I smile at her and she walks away.

The next person to talk to me is an older man, maybe his early 40s? Of all the people I can see, he seems to be wearing the nicest clothes.
"Well hello there miss, I'm the mayor of this nice town, and I'd like to personally welcome you to Lobella." I smile at him too, he seems like a nice man to me, I don't trust him, but he's at least being civil. And if he wants to kill me then he's being subtle too. Finally, I met a set of twins, one's a boy and one's a girl, they too look about the age of 20. They look almost the same, except for obvious things, also the girl's stomach is slightly chubbier, she must eat more then her brother.

"I'm Charlie-" "-and I'm Charlotte." The two of them say, one then the other, I'd think it was funny if it wasn't creepy.
""And it's nice to meet you."" They now BOTH say, I'm about to respond when my stomach growls loudly, oh yeah, I'm hungry aren't I?
"Wow, you sure sound hungry," Charlotte tells me.
"I haven't eaten yet today."
"WHAT! Ya've got ta eat!" Mel yells, walking back over to us and grabbing me by the arm, "c'mon, yur set up ta room at my place." She starts leading me away from everyone.
"What?" I ask, surprised, I'm not used to people touching me anymore.
"Wur gonna be roomies!" she says, smiling, "bye everybody!"
Mel's VERY energetic, but I don't care, I don't. This is DEFINITELY an improvement over my last place, bah! More like 'prison'. She may have adopted me, but that's no excuse to treat me like crap.

"It'll be another 20 minutes to Lobella." The short man says to the woman as she drives the APC. She looks at the man through her rear view mirror.
"What do you think Lobella will look like?"
"I'm sure it'll look fine, the Combine were pulled from this area months ago. It won't be anymore destroyed then you think it is."
"Let's just get there and get this woman, it's vital that we bring her to Geartwitch. She's ready."

Mel and I sit in her apartment; there are bullet holes in the walls, and the windows are boarded up for the most part, but otherwise it looks like a normal home. She and I sit on a couch, I want to talk to her about the facility.
"So, about Aperture, how'd you say you escaped again?" I ask, it's kind of out of the blue, but I want to know.
"That's my dad, he helped me out when Gladdy went loony. I wuz just 9 at the time. He didn't want ta bring me ta 'bring yur daughter ta werk' day. But they said he'd be fired if he didn't. Ya see, he wuzn't on the team ta build her, but he knew she'd go crazy and take over the place. Nobuddy bulieved dad though, he had skitzafrenia. Either way, on the day he told me ta wait in the car well he went in, I did. After Gladdy shut the place down I unlocked the car trunk, dad said he'd leave my skooter in there, and I shoud ride it home if he didn't come back to get me an hour later. After that everything went ta hell and then you showed up." She made sense, even if she slurred her words a bit, but who she's talking about, her dad, he sounds kind of familiar.
"You know, I think I might have heard about your dad from the other test subjects back before Glados was turned on. They said the scientists called him crazy, and the other subjects believed them too. I think his name was Greg something."
"Doug," Mel says, "His name was Doug Rattmann."
