Elizabeth stared at them in disbelief and dismay, her hopes plummeting. After tender reassurances of fidelity, was this now to be how love found its doom-with Darcy appearing just as she had meant to give up on his return, only to secure another lady to dance attendance upon?

She struggled for composure, pressing a hand to her suddenly queasy stomach. Who was this mysterious creature he had brought to her own assembly rooms, when by rights the first set should have been hers?

Oblivious to her inner turmoil, Lydia followed her gaze and gasped. "Why, 'tis Mr. Darcy! And who might that lady on his arm be?" She clutched at Elizabeth's wrist in excitement. "This shall make for delicious speculation. Wait until Mama learns of it!"

Before Elizabeth could object, Lydia hurried off in search of their mother. She swallowed her unease and blinked back tears of hurt at the thought of yet more gossip as she watched Mr. Darcy make his way over to her, the young lady trailing behind him hesitantly.

He bowed. "Miss Elizabeth, forgive my prolonged absence. I have been delayed in Town, but now return - and not alone." He gestured to his companion. "May I present my sister, Miss Georgiana Darcy? Georgiana, this is Miss Elizabeth Bennet."

Elizabeth stared at him speechless. His sister? Relief flooded her, and she managed a curtsy. "Welcome to Meryton, Miss Darcy. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Georgiana smiled shyly. "Thank you. My brother has told me so much about you."

"Has he indeed?" Elizabeth's gaze slid to Mr. Darcy, brow arching.

His eyes glinted with humor. "I wished for my sister to meet you."

Elizabeth smiled, tension easing. "The pleasure is mine. I hope you will enjoy your time here in Meryton, Miss Darcy."

Mr. Darcy cleared his throat. "Is your father present this evening, Miss Elizabeth? I had hoped for a word."

Elizabeth tilted her head. "He is here, yes." Her eyes narrowed. "I had heard rumor you removed yourself to London for good. Yet here you stand."

Mr. Darcy sighed. "Rumor is ever prone to folly. I was delayed in Town, but business concluded and I have returned, as promised." His gaze was warm as it held hers. "I could not stay away overlong, even were there no prior commitment binding me hither."

Elizabeth's breath caught at this fervent vow, scarcely daring to believe happiness restored so swiftly. After such turmoil, tender words seemed too wanton a luxury to be real-yet in his eyes she glimpsed an echo of her own longing that eased her doubts.

Elizabeth smiled, glancing to where Georgiana stood watching them shyly. "Miss Darcy, might I introduce you to my elder sister Jane?" At Georgiana's nod, she led her over to where Jane stood.

Jane curtsied, her smile gracious. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Miss Darcy. Welcome to Meryton."

Georgiana curtsied, managing a tremulous smile. "Thank you, Miss Bennet. I am pleased to meet you." She glanced between Elizabeth and Jane. "My brother speaks very highly of you both."

Elizabeth's eyes glinted with humor. "Does he indeed? How very kind of him."

Mr. Darcy made his way to Elizabeth's side, smiling to see his sister in pleasant exchange. His eyes met Elizabeth's, warmth and tenderness mingling with a hint of uncertainty. "Will you stand up with me, Miss Elizabeth?"

At her nod, he led her onto the floor and swept her into the next lively reel. As they danced, Mr. Darcy frowned. "We are the only couple, save your sister partnered with Bingley."

Elizabeth smiled wryly. "Things have been thus since our return from Netherfield. Rumor and shunning have been our constant companions."

Mr. Darcy's jaw tightened. "I regret you faced such wanton spite and cruelty without me. I should not have left you alone to weather this storm."

"You could not know what awaited us here." Her eyes glinted with humor. "Besides, your absence afforded ample opportunity for doubt and dejection-two conditions, I suspect, you mean to remedy in future?"

His eyes smoldered. "You may depend upon it." He spun her around and caught her tightly against him, heedless of propriety. "I will not leave your side again, if I can help it."

Elizabeth caught her breath, heat flooding her cheeks at their sudden closeness and his fervent declaration, pulsing through every fiber of her being like wildfire. Her gaze dropped to his lips and she swayed towards him almost imperceptibly.

Mr. Darcy gazed down at her, eyes darkening with desire evident. "You are utterly bewitching. I do not know how I stayed away so long." His fingers trailed slowly up her arm, leaving tingles in their wake and prompting a delightful shiver. "The memory of your company has sustained me in our parting, but can no longer compare to the intoxication of having you in my arms."

The final strains of music faded, signaling an end to their stolen moment of reprieve. With reluctance, Elizabeth stepped back from the circle of Mr. Darcy's arms with flushed cheeks.

He guided her back to where her sister Jane sat with Georgiana. "I must speak with your father now. Rumor and malice have delayed us long enough."

Georgiana, looked between Elizabeth and her brother, her eyes sparkling with delight. Before Elizabeth could reply, he strode across the floor to where her father sat.

Caroline's brow furrowed in confusion and disbelief as she watched Mr. Darcy approach Mr. Bennet. She leaned closer to her sister Louisa and whispered, "Why on earth would Mr. Darcy seek out that buffoon of a man? He clearly cannot stand the entire Bennet family."

Louisa, neither comprehending the situation, replied in hushed tones, "Indeed, it is most perplexing. Perhaps he has some urgent business to discuss."

"Mr. Bennet, I wondered if I might beg a word?" At Mr. Bennet's nod, Mr. Darcy blurted, "I seek your blessing to make your daughter Elizabeth my wife."

A hush spread across the ballroom at the announcement. Elizabeth flushed as every eye in the vicinity turned to her, but she found she could not tear her gaze from the man who had just unabashedly declared his desire to face the world at her side before all.

Mr. Bennet arched a brow. "Indeed? And has my daughter consented to this plan?"

Elizabeth made her way swiftly to his side. "Yes, Papa. I have." She slipped her hand into Mr. Darcy's and gazed up at him, smiling.

Mr. Bennet chuckled. "Very well, if you have settled it between you, I have no objections."

As the astonishing news of Mr. Darcy's proposal to Elizabeth and Mr. Bennet's subsequent blessing began to circulate, whispers erupted among the closest onlookers. Like ripples in a pond, the murmurs spread throughout the ballroom, each person informing the next until an audible roar filled the air.

Caroline's eyes widened, and her mouth fell open as she heard of Elizabeth's acceptance of Mr. Darcy's proposal. Louisa, equally stunned, stared at the unfolding scene with her jaw slackened.

The sisters exchanged disbelieving looks, each attempting to gauge the other's reaction. Both found themselves almost paralyzed in shock, unable to tear their gazes away from the shocking scene before them.

As the weight of the situation bore down upon her, Caroline inadvertently let her fan slip from her grasp. It tumbled to the floor with an unceremonious clatter, garnering the attention of several nearby guests. She swayed and reached for a nearby chair, steadying herself against its back as she struggled to maintain her composure.

Mrs. Bennet, having overheard the exchange, her hands fluttering with excitement, gushed, "My Elizabeth is to marry Mr. Darcy! A splendid connection! We shall be the talk of Hertfordshire!"

Suddenly, Mr. Bingley appeared at the couple's side, beaming with delight. "Darcy, congratulations! I am overjoyed for you both." He turned to Elizabeth and bowed. "Miss Elizabeth, welcome to our circle. You have captured my friend's heart in the most spectacular fashion."

Elizabeth curtsied, her cheeks flushed with pleasure. "Thank you, Mr. Bingley."

As the group continued to revel in the news, Jane and Georgiana approached with eager expressions on their faces.

Jane, her eyes shining with happiness for her sister, embraced Elizabeth warmly. "Dearest Lizzy, I am so delighted for you both! This is truly wonderful news."

Georgiana offered a sincere smile as she added her own well-wishes. "Miss Elizabeth, I am beyond thrilled to welcome you into our family. At long last, I shall have the sister I've always wished for, and my brother could not have chosen a more deserving partner!"

Across the room, Sir William Lucas shook his head, a mixture of disbelief and admiration on his features. "I must say, I did not see this coming," he admitted to his wife.

Lady Lucas nodded pensively. "It does make one wonder if perhaps we judged her too hastily. After all, a man like Mr. Darcy wouldn't choose just any woman as his bride."

Mrs. Philips could barely contain her excitement. "Oh, my dear sister," she gushed to Mrs. Bennet, "you must be so proud! Your Lizzy is to marry one of the finest gentlemen in all of England!"

Mrs. Bennet, her cheeks flushed with delight, couldn't help but preen at the attention. "Indeed, I am beyond elated! And let us not forget my dear Jane and Mr. Bingley. To be sure, I had expected their engagement to be the first of all my girls but with Lizzy's news, it appears she has taken the lead! No matter, I will be equally thrilled for them when it is their turn. Two daughters engaged to such fine gentlemen is a testament to our family's good fortune."

Caroline Bingley trembled, her entire body quaking as she stared at the scene before her. Slowly, she shook her head, muttering under her breath, "No, no... this is not possible. This was never supposed to happen."

Louisa leaned in close and hissed, "Be quiet, Caro. Don't let them hear you. Compose yourself!"

But Caroline seemed nearly insensible, her eyes remained wide, her breathing shallow.

The crowd seemed to part like a wave, and the newly engaged couple found themselves standing directly in front of the Bingley sisters. Louisa attempted to put on a pleasant, polite smile, while Caroline's face remained pale and twitching. Louisa discreetly pinched her sister, but Caroline did not change her aghast expression.

Mr. Darcy addressed both sisters with a pleased and calculating expression. "I would like to share with you both that Elizabeth has made me the happiest of men today. She has graciously agreed to be my wife."

Louisa, with feigned cheerfulness, responded with a tight-lipped smile. "Congratulations to you both."

Unable to contain herself any longer, Caroline murmured a single word, over and over: "No... No..."

Mr. Darcy stared directly at Caroline, his gaze steady and unflinching as he said, "You know," he began, his voice firm, "if it wasn't for those baseless rumors, I might not have asked Miss Elizabeth to marry me so quickly. If I knew who had instigated such gossip," Mr. Darcy continued, "I would extend my sincerest gratitude, for they indeed hastened our felicity."

At these words, Caroline's pallor was so severe that she appeared as though she might dissolve into the damask wallpaper behind her. She swayed dangerously, her eyes rolling back as she crumpled to the floor in an inelegant heap, a most unbecoming swoon.

Louisa, still wearing her forced smile, merely stood there, staring at her sister in shock.

A titter of laughter erupted among the guests as Miss Bingley crumpled into an ungainly heap upon the floor.

"Quickly, someone assist Miss Bingley!"

A nearby matron and her daughter rushed forward at his call. With the help of several nearby gentlemen, they lifted the limp Miss Bingley and moved her to a settee in an antechamber off the ballroom. Louisa followed hurriedly behind them.

Elizabeth could not find it in her heart to feel anything but compassion for the silly woman. After all, Caroline had just received a rather nasty shock, and Elizabeth knew her own happiness would be short-lived if it came at the expense of another's suffering.

As the whispers and murmurs gradually subsided, the musicians struck up a lively tune. As Mr. Bingley led Jane to the dance floor, their eyes locked in a silent promise of future happiness, Mr. Darcy turned to Elizabeth and whispered tenderly, "Allow me the pleasure of this dance, my dearest Elizabeth."

Her heart swelled with emotion, threatening to burst forth in song as she placed her hand upon his arm. "I would be honored, Mr. Darcy."

As they took their place in the center of the dance floor, Elizabeth noted with some surprise that others were now eagerly joining them. Sir William and Lady Lucas bustled past with bright smiles and words of congratulations. The younger Miss Bennets happily took to the floor with amiable young suitors.

As they danced, Elizabeth couldn't help but notice the way Mr. Darcy's fingers ever so gently grazed her waist, sending shivers down her spine. His warm breath whispered across her cheek, the scent of spiced cologne intoxicating her senses.

"Elizabeth," he murmured tenderly, his voice a low rumble in her ear, "you have made me the happiest of men. I shall do everything in my power to ensure your happiness for as long as we both shall live."

Her heart swelled with emotion, and she met his eyes, her own shining with unshed tears. His fingers grazed her waist, sending shivers down her spine. His breath whispered across her cheek, the scent of spiced cologne intoxicating her senses.

"Elizabeth," he murmured tenderly, his voice a low rumble in her ear, "I traveled to London to procure a special license. We need not wait for the banns to be read. I will speak to the parson on the morrow, and we can be married within the week!"

"Truly?" she breathed, her eyes widening in delight. At his eager nod, her heart swelled near to bursting. "Why Mr. Darcy, how very expedient you are," she teased lightly. "One might think you rather impatient to wed."

Mr. Darcy chuckled, pulling her closer as they continued to dance. "When the prize is as great as you, my darling Elizabeth, patience is a virtue I do not possess," he replied softly.
