I could not end this chapter. I finished the rest of it ages ago, but the ending has been rewritten about half a dozen times. I hope you guys like it and I'm going to try and post the next chapter soon to make up for this one being so long coming... Also I'm on summer vacation now, so updates should be faster.
Anyways, shout out to Within the Stars for putting up with me complaining about not being able to write.
A week later:
Waking up to see Alec's face was something that Magnus looked forward to constantly. Waking up to see Isabelle's face less than an inch away from his own was something that Magnus was neither ready for nor looking forward to. Frankly, it was terrifying.
"Jesus!" Magnus yelped, jerking back and almost knocking himself out on the headboard. Isabelle giggled and sat back on her heels. She was near the edge of the bed, still wearing her pyjamas and looking strangely melancholy for someone who had just laughed at Magnus' expense.
"Good morning sunshine." Isabelle snorted. She sighed and yanked her hair out of its falling bun. She started to put it back up, grinning at Magnus. "Are you going to get up, or what?"
"Where's Alec?" Magnus asked instead, feeling the bed next to him and frowning.
"Taking a shower." She paused. "Does he sleep in here every night?"
"No." Magnus laughed, running a sheepish hand through his messy hair. "Sometimes we crash in his bedroom." It was true, it had reached a point where Magnus and Alec rarely spent the night apart. Magnus had gotten used to falling asleep listening to Alec's heartbeat far faster than he was going to admit to Isabelle.
Isabelle stood up, her hands falling to her sides. There was a conflicted look on her face, but she spoke before Magnus could ask what it was about. "You're going home in a week."
Magnus' heat went cold, but he nodded. "I am."
"I don't know if he's going to be able to take you leaving."
"I don't know how I'm going to leave."
That seemed to surprise her, for she fell silent for a moment before telling him, "You'd better figure out."
"You're mad at me." Magnus noted. "And here I thought we were friends, gal pals even."
"No one says gal pals."
"I do."
That was enough to coax a smile out of Isabelle, who shook her head. "You alone say gal pals, no one else would dare. And we are, friends, gal pals, whatever you would like to call it. But you're also the boy who's one week away from breaking my brother's heart."
It was Magnus' turn to pause. He ran another hand through his hair, forcing it to stick up in all sorts of directions. "Listen, Isabelle." Magnus sighed. "I have no idea what's going to happen when I leave. I don't really want to think about it. I love your brother and I'm going to spend time with him."
"You only say that because you won't have to be around to pick up the pieces." Isabelle's words hit him like a slap in the face and Magnus visibly recoiled. Isabelle stopped for a moment and groaned. "I'm sorry, I'm being all weird and depressing again. I can't handle anything right now. That was out of line-"
"No, it wasn't." Magnus said softly, looking down at his hands. "It's true, at least partially." Magnus didn't want to think about what was upsetting Isabelle, she of all people should have been happy.
"You think so?" Isabelle laughed. "Magnus Bane, you may be many things, but you are not a heartbreaker. You are not going to stomp on my brother and never turn around. You're better than that."
If anything, those words were worse than when she was accusing him or being awful. Magnus didn't want to tell Isabelle, because it wasn't the sort of thing that one talked about with their boyfriend's sister, but Magnus had been a heartbreaker. He'd been the worst of the worst. He'd been the kind of person to hook up and never call back, to walk away from people simply because he didn't feel like being with them anymore. Magnus was trying to be a different person, trying to be someone new and someone better. But he wasn't sure he was. He wasn't going to make promises to a girl who didn't even realize Magnus had to try.
"You still there?" Isabelle chuckled, waving a hand in front of Magnus' face. "You seriously spaced out. But, if you're still alive, I want you to promise that you're going to be nice to Alec. Don't destroy him." She grew sad, almost pleading.
"I wouldn't dream of it." Magnus said, wishing the words didn't feel like a lie. "We're gal pals, remember?"
That was enough to bring the grin back to Isabelle's face. "Gal pals." She repeated, before moving to the door. Isabelle paused in the doorway, looking like there were a thousand more things she needed to say. But then she didn't, she left the room and closed the door behind her, leaving Magnus in silence. Before he could get up and join his glorious boyfriend in the shower, Magnus' phone buzzed on his bedside table. Tempted to simply ignore it for a while, Magnus flopped back down on the bed and threw an arm over his eyes.
When it continued to buzz, making it obvious that it was a phone call, Magnus reached over and picked it up.
"What?"
"That's a nice way to great your best friend." Camille muttered.
"It's been almost a week since we talked." Magnus reminded her. "I texted you and you never texted back - which I'm very torn about. I can't believe you would do such a thing. Have you no values-"
"Shush, you drama fairy."
"Queen darling. I've always been a Queen." Camille laughed and Magnus couldn't help but join her. "Now, how can I assist you, Cammie my dear."
"I just missed you." Camille said, sounding a little more morose than usual. "I've been all in my head about the whole Ragnor situation and needed a little bit of Magnus time. I'm really confused and I want to know everything."
"Everything? How much time do you have? Because if I'm going to tell you everything, I'm going to start with a description of Alec's hair and work my way down."
"Have you done anything other than shacking up with my sweet, little, innocent," Camille stressed, "country boy?"
"Not really. And I don't think he's as innocent as you think he is." Magnus sighed. "I still want an answer you know."
"About what?" Camille asked, faking ignorance. "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Why are you talking to Jace?"
Camille was quiet. "I feel like you're not telling me everything. So I asked Jace."
"And?"
"He told me that something seriously personal went down." Camille said slowly. Magnus' heart turned to ice, his father. He'd never even thought about Jace telling Camille, it hadn't clued in. "But he wouldn't tell me what it was."
That shouldn't have taken Magnus by surprise. If anyone knew that somethings were nicer if kept secret, it was Jace. "Oh."
"Yeah."
"You're mad."
"I'm not." Camille snapped, before sighing. "I just feel like you're so far away and I can't help at all. I'm supposed to be your best friend, but it's more like you're this unknown person."
"Cam-"
"No, it's true. I know that we tried and we still talk and all that. But you didn't tell me. You wouldn't tell me anything. It was all happy news and good things. It's like we're in a really shit long distance relationship. I want to know what the hell happened, but I also want to know why you didn't tell me."
Because saying it out loud is so very different from having it inside, Magnus thought. Even after talking to his Dad and losing his father and everything that had happened, telling Camille made it real. Telling Camille made it a concrete chapter of his life. It had always been this way, that telling Camille made good news feel good and made a break-up feel like the end. Magnus could tell Jace, he could tell Maryse, he could tell himself, but he couldn't tell Camille.
"Because telling you makes it real." Magnus said honestly. Camille was completely silent. "Look, it wasn't terrible, I'm going to survive. Alec is helping." He added.
"I'm glad you have him."
"So am I." Magnus paused. "Can I tell you when I get home? I don't know if I want to do this over the phone. Besides, you'll be graced with my lovely presence in a week, I'm sure you can live."
"I supposed I can find a way to carry on." Camille laughed, sounding more like her normal self. "You tell me the second you get home mister, I need a good old fashioned best friend snuggle."
Snorting, Magnus told her to go and vamoose, so that he could spend some time with Alec. He made her promise to call him later that night so they could discuss the so-called 'Ragnor situation'.
"One more thing." Camille said, just before Magnus hung up the phone. "Are you and Will suddenly super tight? Because Jessamine was being bitchy the other day at breakfast and Will stood up for you."
"I can't even imagine how you reacted to that."
"Ragnor dropped a mug of coffee on himself." She tried to deadpan, but there was a touch of fondness in her voice.
"Naturally."
"So?" Camille pressed. "What's the deal?"
"We have a level of understanding?" Magnus said, choosing his words carefully. "I think William and I are starting into a lovely new part of our friendship. He and I have never gotten along, mostly because we're so similar - assholes and all that - but I think that I'm going to have to learn to love myself. And if that means learning to like Will as well, well then, I'm willing to try."
"You've gotten very wise."
"Thank you."
"But I still think you've gone insane, I'm waiting for the apocalypse. I think I might even see a pig fly this afternoon."
"Haha."
"No seriously." Camille said, laughing over Magnus' sarcastic, fake laughter. "I can't even fathom that this is happening right now."
Magnus heard the shower turn off and sighed. "My boyfriend is returning to our bed," ignoring her spluttering, he continued, "goodbye bitch."
"Later you harlot."
Laughing as he hung up the phone, Magnus tossed it back on the table and watched the bathroom door open.
"You're up." Alec remarked, grinning at Magnus as he wandered out of the bathroom. Magnus just nodded, soaking up the view of Alec, naked from the waist up, in nothing but a towel. "And you're doing that weird looking thing."
"I can't help it." Magnus sighed, savouring the way that Alec blushed when Magnus did it again. "You're gorgeous."
Blushing and smiling, Alec made his way over to the bed and leaned down to kiss his boyfriend. Magnus accepted the kiss greedily, letting his hands run over Alec's muscled chest. Alec pulled away, still blushing red as a tomato.
"What do you have in store for us today?" Magnus asked, running his fingers over the rough towel at his boyfriend's waist.
Alec slapped his hands away with a grin. "Watch it. I actually want to do something today, which will never get done if you spend all day fondling me."
"That's a shame." Magnus said, giving Alec an innocent smile and putting his hands back on his boyfriend's hips. "I sincerely enjoy fondling you." He pressed a kiss to Alec's hip bone and Alec groaned.
"You're going to kill me." Alec huffed, pushing Magnus away playfully. "But seriously, we do have something we're going to do today."
"What?"
"Picnic."
Magnus wandered down the stairs, his hair probably still a mess and he was only half certain that the clothes he was wearing were clean. But it didn't matter, because he was delighted to be spending the day with this boyfriend. Plus, he doubted it was that obvious.
"Dear God," Jace said, tossing his apple up into the air and catching it - without looking, because that was apparently the cool way to do it. "You look like you just got out of bed."
"I did."
"Please tell me Alec wasn't in there with you." Jace made a face, though he grinned after so that Magnus knew he was kidding. Jace had been surprisingly on board with their whole relationship, all things considered. Magnus figured Jace hadn't come to the conclusion that Isabelle had crammed down Magnus' throat that morning. Not yet at least.
"He was." Magnus smirked. "And we were doing all sorts of homosexual activities."
Jace snorted. "Naturally."
"Anything to eat?" Magnus asked, pulling open the pantry. Living in the Lightwoods house had gradually made it home and Magnus wasn't nearly as apprehensive about simply helping himself as he had been.
"Not really." Jace frowned, taking a large bite out of his apple. He spoke with his mouth full, something he managed to still do with a fair amount of grace. "Mum's been out all morning with Elaine. Things have been a little awkward. I think they're trying their best to make it work."
"Oh."
Magnus didn't want to admit it, but the notion that Mrs Lewis wasn't totally on board with their relationship hurt a little. She'd been so nice, but it had all turned south. That was honesty for you, Magnus supposed.
"Aren't you two going on some lovely outing anyways?" Jace asked, tossing his apple up and down between bites. Magnus was tempted to take it away before he dropped it. Not to mention it was terribly distracting.
"Yes." Magnus muttered. "But I'm dying of starvation. Practically wasting away."
"Poor baby."
"Poor muffin." Echoed Isabelle, as she walked through the back door. She was fully dressed now and carrying a basket of eggs. It was almost a quaint, a light wicker basket that looked like it was pulled straight from Red Riding Hood's hands.
"Don't say that name in this household." Jace snarled. "That demon spawn could still be lurking."
"She's been dead for ages." Isabelle sighed, setting the basket on the counter. "It's nothing to worry- did you just throw your apple in the fucking sink?"
"Maybe." Jace said, sniffing. "It's the name, it's messing with my head. I'm not responsible for any of my actions."
"What name?" Alec asked. Magnus' boyfriend tugged a shirt over his head as he walked down the stairs.
"Muffin." Magnus flashed Alec a grin and accepted his peck on the lips happily.
"A few notes." Jace said. "Firstly, your joy is sickening, please take it elsewhere-"
"He's just upset because Luke and Jocelyn are on their honeymoon and Clary still won't let him in her pants." Isabelle stage-whispered, giggling behind her hand. Magnus snorted and walked to the fridge, choosing to pour himself a glass of milk. The glass dangling from one hand, he watched Jace give Isabelle a death glare.
"And B-"
"Do you mean secondly? Because you did say firstly-"
"And B," Jace repeated, louder this time to be heard over his siblings laughter, "the name Muffin is a really large trigger-"
"Not really qualifying as a trigger." Magnus interrupted, "I mean, I don't think the name itself was exactly traumatic and using it like that is a little disrespectful." Alec gave him and adoring look, while Isabelle mumbled something that sounded like 'you tell him'.
"Fine." Jace ground out. "it makes me uncomfortable to think of the harsh being that used to roam this halls. I had nightmares for years."
"And finally," Alec smirked, taking a sip of Magnus' milk. "Where's Max gone off to?"
"He's hanging out with Helen's brother today. The little one. You know," Jace waved his arms around, "the small, annoying one."
"Right." Alec said, drawing the word out and looking at his brother. "Do you really not remember his name."
"I'll remember his name when he remembers mine." Jace snapped, causing his siblings to laugh.
Seeing Magnus' confused look, Isabelle explained "He thinks that Jace's name is Jason. It's not far off really, seeing that he thought my name was Irene for a couple years. But he's never stopped calling Jace Jason. Drives him absolutely insane."
"Damn right it does."
Isabelle rolled her eyes and put the eggs in the fridge, unloading them into the door before putting the basket in a cupboard near the sink. Then she waved at them, sprinting upstairs.
"Bye?" Jace called after her, looking mildly confused.
"She might hang out with Simon later." Alec explained, rooting through the cupboards for the picnic basket. "So she has to go look ah-mazing." He rolled his eyes and Jace nodded.
"I don't understand that."
"What?" Magnus asked, pointing at the fridge and getting a nod from Alec. He walked over and opened it, seeing most of what Alec prepared just in the front. He pulled them out, passing them to his boyfriend.
"Firstly," Jace said, making another list on his fingers. Alec sighed, but Jace ignored him. "How the hell the two of you can do shit like that without talking. You just pointed at the fridge and then started grabbing stuff. How?" Before either of them could respond, Jace kept going. "And also, if they're dating and she likes him and stuff, shouldn't she want him to like her without makeup?"
"Would you like Clary without makeup?" Alec asked absentmindedly.
"Yeah."
"Have you seen her without makeup?" Magnus asked.
"Uh," Jace paused, "I think so?"
They both stopped to look at him. "You think so?"
"I don't know. I don't think I really notice. She's always beautiful, so does it really matter?"
"Aww," Magnus cooed, "that was almost romantic. To think, we might just make a human of you yet. And Jace, there are a few reasons why people wear makeup. For most, they don't think that they're beautiful enough without it - totally a lie crafted by society. But for some people like Isabelle, more and more now, they simply like it. It makes them feel confident."
Jace was quiet, so Alec and Magnus continued to load the basket. Magnus kept holding things up, just to be silly, and Alec had to laugh and shake his head. No Magnus, they could not take an entire container of lima beans with them - did they really want to?
"I think we're ready to go." Alec said happily, grabbing one last thing from the cupboard and tossing it to Magnus. It was a pack of Oreos, and Magnus laughed, cramming it in the basket and then grabbing it off the counter.
"Jace, you look stunned." Magnus noted, staring at Jace, who had been completely still for far too long. He was looking at the counter. "You okay?"
"I think so." Jace said slowly. "I'm just going to go upstairs and tell Isabelle she looks nice."
Magnus and Alec blinked at him. Once, twice and then again.
"You what?"
It wasn't that Jace wasn't a nice person - though often times he wasn't - it was more that he wasn't the kind of person to do something nice out of the blue. He wasn't the one to make the small, kind gesture, but more wait and go for the grand sweeping one.
"I just-" Jace waved them away, making his way upstairs. To Magnus' amusement, he grabbed another apple from the bowl on the counter, ignoring the one that was still floating around in the sink.
"And for the record Magnus." Jace said, sticking his head around the corner one last time. "I will not allow you to make me politically incorrect. In fact, I will go out of my way to thwart your plans of making me a better human being."
"I feel like we're in a fairytale." Magnus said, spinning around as he looked up through the trees. Magnus couldn't see anything more than a sliver of blue sky and sunshine between the trees.
"Really?" Alec asked, climbing up a ridge and shifting the basket to his other hand so that he could hold a hand out to his boyfriend. "What's happening in this fairytale?"
"Well," Magnus said, grabbing his hand and hoisting himself up. They continued through the forest, but Magnus could see the edge approaching as they walked. "Once upon a time-"
"Always a good start."
"Hush, I'm storytelling." Magnus chided. "Once upon a time, there was a prince."
"Isn't it supposed to start with a princess?"
"Yeah, if you're feeling sexist. Dudes can be in fairytales too, ladies can be president. It's not the dark ages."
"You're weird."
"Hush. Anyways, this prince was the fairest in all the land." Magnus grinned. "He had really pretty blue eyes and awesome abs. He lived in a huge castle," cue throwing out the arms for emphasis, "with his family. He had one sister and two brothers-"
"Hold up." Alec said, holding up a hand and looking at Magnus incredulously. "Is this person - your prince or whatever - supposed to be me?"
"Obviously." Magnus rolled his eyes. "Anyways, back to my awesome story. This wonderful prince lived a wonderful life, being all chill in the castle."
"God," Alec sighed, "fairy tales are always so formal. The language just seems to stilted."
"Until one day, a dragon arrived." Magnus continued, like Alec hadn't spoken. "The dragon was spoiled and mean, he wasn't nice to the people in the castle, but they were nice enough to let him stay anyways." Alec didn't say anything, but Magnus could feel his eyes on him as the story got more self-deprecating. "The dragon was sad and lonely, but he holed up in the tallest room, of the tallest tower. He demanded to be alone."
"Doesn't sound fun." Alec said softly.
"It wasn't." Magnus said, cramming his hands in his pockets. "And this self-imposed isolation didn't make the dragon feel any better. It almost made him feel worse. It was no fun and he was more lonely then ever."
"So did he ever stop?" Alec asked, as though he didn't know the answer. "Did he give up the isolation to hang out with the family?"
"Not by choice." Magnus told him, smiling slightly. "The prince - remember he was wonderful, chilling in the castle, all the stuff from before - came to give the dragon some food. And the dragon opened the door to see the most wonderful human being ever - the prince." Alec made a face, but Magnus ignored him. "And everything changed. The dragon made friends and fell in love. It was more than being forced to come to the castle, it was being free of everything he'd left behind."
"And then?"
"They lived happily ever after." Magnus said, wishing the words didn't stick in his throat. Alec didn't look so convinced, so Magnus reached out and grabbed the hand that wasn't holding the basket. "They lived happily ever after." Magnus repeated, but Alec wouldn't meet his eyes.
They stepped out into the sunshine their hands still firmly intertwined. Magnus had to squint to see as his eyes adjusted from the dark forest. He wasn't entirely sure if this was the same hill they'd rode to that one day - it didn't seem likely that they'd gotten there on foot - but the view was much the same. Long sloping hills and fall away houses that looked like nothing more than painted doll houses on the perfect hills.
Alec lay down the picnic blanket and smiled, it was slightly hollow, but Magnus chose to ignore it. He sat down on the blanket, patting the space next to him and grabbing Alec's hand the moment he sat down. He pulled Alec in for a quick kiss, holding him there longer than he would have normally, not wanting the moment to end.
"I've been meaning to ask you." Magnus said, letting one of his hands linger on Alec's waist. "Why the hell is there a forest in the middle of your farm land?"
"We're not really those kinds of farmers." Alec shrugged. "We keep the chickens and the horses because we can, but we didn't really need the land for crops or anything. So we left the forest there."
"It looks really out of place the more I look at it."
"Everyone's a critic."
Magnus snorted. "So you're telling me that most of this was forest before you horrific farm people cut it all down?"
"I guess so? I mean there are still parts here and there - I think Helen's got some in her backyard. I think it might be natural though, bits and pieces of forest. Why the sudden interest?"
"Just wondering." Magnus shrugged. He suddenly flopped back so that he was looking up at the bright blue sky. He had to squint, because it was still bright out and it hurt his eyes to look skyward for too long. It was picture perfect, just the way it had been all the way back when he'd arrived - it felt like nothing had changed, but that wasn't true at all. Magnus remembered touching down in Texas and being mildly annoyed, his mood fluctuating between happy and angry. He remembered opening the door and seeing Alec. It felt like yesterday and a hundred years ago all at the same time.
"What are you thinking about now?" Alec asked, lying down next to Magnus. Magnus turned to see his boyfriend looking at him, his lips turned up at the corners into an almost smile. His eyes were bluer than the sky and Magnus had to look away, for Alec was brighter than the sun.
"You." Magnus replied honestly. His voice was almost a whisper and it left silence behind when it was carried away by the wind.
"Oh."
Magnus giggled, it was so like Alec to be dumbfounded that even his boyfriend was thinking about him. They had fallen hard and fast, meaning that for Alec, the basics of what happened in a relationship - ie, thinking about the other person a lot - didn't really clue in.
"Oh?"
"I thought you might have been having deep philosophical thoughts about life."
"I'm having deep philosophical thoughts about your face."
"Oh."
There was another beat of silence, filled only by the sound of the wind rushing through the trees behind them. Alec reached down and took one of Magnus' hands, threading his fingers through Magnus'. Magnus scooted over, so that his head was just at Alec's shoulder.
"I don't want you to go." Alec said. It was almost a whisper, and it broke Magnus' heart.
He hadn't expected it to be this hard, he'd thought he'd be counting down the days before he could go home with joy. But here Magnus was, waiting for the day with dread and wishing that he didn't have to go. He wanted to lie underneath the pale blue sky with Alec forever. He tightened his grip of Alec's hand.
"I don't want to go." Magnus said back, splaying the fingers from his other hand on Alec's chest and curling into him. "I don't want to ever have to leave you."
"So stay." Alec said it so simply that Magnus wanted to scream. Because it wasn't that simple, it wasn't at all. Magnus didn't belong here. He would never fit in with the happy people here, because he wasn't cut from the same pure stone that they were. He was a puzzle piece that didn't fit, no matter how much they tried to make him - no matter how much he tried to make himself. Magnus wanted to stay, he really did. But New York called to him like a song, that one tiny thing missing. It was one thing to love being in Texas with Alec, but it was another to leave New York and make this his home. He was torn between the two places, the place where he belonged and the place that held his heart.
"You know I can't." Magnus whispered, his voice thick. For a moment Magnus wanted to get up, he wanted to beg Alec to come with him, to leave it all behind. To take Alec with him would be to have the best of both places at his fingertips. It would be to have his friends and his family, without ever having to give up the boy he loved. But in the same way that Magnus belonged under the grey sky of Manhattan, shopping bags slung on one arm and Camille dangling off the other, Alec belonged in the free, open spaces of Texas. He belonged in the sun, running around with his siblings and being the person that Magnus had fallen in love with. Magnus wasn't sure he could tear Alec away from that.
"I was going to hate it, you know." Magnus said, turning away from Alec slightly to look up at the sky. "I was determined to have a terrible time, to sulk the whole time and make my parents feel horribly guilty for making me miss a summer hanging out with my friends. That was the plan. But then I met you. You ruined my plan, you shattered everything that I thought about being happy and being in love. You make me feel loved, you make me feel special-"
"You are special." Alec said it quickly, like he didn't even have to think about it. Magnus wished that there were more people in the world like Alec, more people so genuinely wonderful.
Magnus made a small noise of protest. "You're too sweet. Is it crazy that I want to go back to the beginning of the summer and do it all over again."
"Really?"
"Yeah." Magnus hummed. "I really don't want to go home. But I know that I can't stay. I used up all my time." Alec was looking at him, eyes bright. Something in Magnus felt like a little kid around Alec, lying on a picnic blanket and looking up at the sky. He felt like he was having his first crush, his heart racing and his head such a jumbled mix of emotions he couldn't breathe.
"We'll talk when you go home, won't we?" Alec's voice was hopeful and when Magnus turned to him, he wouldn't meet Magnus' eyes.
"Camille and I have been friends for ages." Magnus said and Alec gave him a funny look, clearly wondering how this related to what they were talking about at all. "And I haven't seen her for three months - technically less - and we're not the same. Maybe everything will be as normal when I get back, but there's this constant issue that she's separate from what's happening around me. I guess what I'm getting at is I'm scared that even if we do talk, it won't be the same. What if I'm not ready to lose you?"
Alec didn't say anything and Magnus pulled him closer, resting his head on Alec's chest and listening to his heartbeat, letting its sound drown out the rest of the world and all the thoughts that were spinning in his head.
There you go! Also, we are officially 5 chapters away from the end! There will be 28 chapters to this fic and I'm really surprised it's almost over.
