This is the story of CM Pilot, I Am the Apocalypse, but happened in Season 6, around PD 6x15 / Med 4x15 (after Will broke up with Natalie). And no, it was not Will's first day on the job.

"Jay, are those new shoes or what?" asked Adam annoyed.

"Huh?" Jay looked up from his report.

"You keep tapping your foot," said Adam.

"Yeah, sorry," mumbled Jay. Hailey scrunched her nose, raising her eyebrows while looking at Jay. "Sorry, just… I didn't sleep well. Not used to having a roommate," said Jay.

"Will is still at your place?" asked Hailey.

"Yeah, where else would he be?" Jay sighed. He felt bad for Will, about the broken engagement with Natalie, but he was still getting used to Will's presence and schedule. The two argued about laundry, dishes, and other things regularly.

"I don't know, maybe…"

"Nope, hasn't pulled the trigger on his own place," Jay shrugged. Voight walked out of his office, talking on his phone. Everyone looked at him.

"Bomb at Med. ER," said Voight. Hailey glanced at Jay, who automatically pulled out his phone to call Will. She grabbed car key from Jay's desk and walked ahead of him down the stairs.

"Will, answer it, damn it!" cursed Jay as they jumped on the car. He kept trying to call Will, his face paled. Hailey grabbed his arm. "Not my brother too, Hailey," he pleaded. Hailey drove following Voight's car.

"Will might be busy helping people who come in to the ER," Hailey reasoned. She glanced at the radio. There were many calls regarding the bomb, one clearly mentioned the ER door was locked because there's a spill of unknown substance. Hailey glanced at Jay; both knew that it was worse than originally thought.

"So was Will hurt by the bomb or the substance?" asked Jay. "Damn it, months ago he had a gun to his head, now this?" He kept calling Will, to no result.

"Nothing you can do now other than to put your head straight, let's see what we can do," said Hailey. They arrived at the hospital, pulled their vest before they went to the side of the building. Jay tried calling Will one last time. He huffed when he heard a cough from the other end.

"WILL?" he yelled. Hailey stopped her movement, looking at him expectantly. "Will, you're there? Tell me you're not in there."

"I am," said Will.

"You're hurt?"

"I… this is not a regular bomb, Jay. I will… wait, I need to go," Will ended the call.

"He's hurt?" asked Hailey.

"He didn't answer that. He said, this is not a regular bomb. As if there is a regular bomb," said Jay. "At least I know he's alive, I can yell at him later for being there," he exhaled a breath he didn't realise he was holding.

"He works here," Hailey smirked, walking alongside Jay towards Voight.

"So you're saying that no one, not even CPD, can enter the ER?" Jay's voice heightened.

"That's right. We need to know what we're dealing with. Not even Hazmat can go inside," said Casey. "My men are already inside, Severide is hurt, I'd appreciate if you stand down and follow our lead."

"Alright, thanks Casey," Hailey stepped in front of Jay, patting Casey's arm. "Please keep us updated."

"I will update you," Casey said the 'you' with a tone which means Hailey personally. Hailey nodded, then pulled Jay aside.

"Don't you see that they are doing nothing?" hissed Jay.

"Pull yourself together," Hailey hissed back. "Right now, those inside are fighting, including Will. Finding the source of virus, treating Severide… let's do what we do best. Kevin has run background on the suspect, let's go and find out about him."

"But Will…" Jay reasoned.

"Casey will call me if there's any news," said Hailey. She guided Jay out of the tent. "Nothing we can do here except for waiting, and you're not thinking clearly here."

"Alright," Jay's shoulders deflated. They walked towards their car. "But we turn back the second there's news."

"Okay," said Hailey. She held out her hand asking for the car key. Jay reluctantly gave it. They went to the suspect's rented property and found some notes on biological and chemical substances. Hailey took photos on it and sent it to Brett. From hanging out in Molly's with 51, she gathered that Brett's partner, the young Violet Mikami, is a science lover. She hoped that would bring clarity as to what they are dealing with.

Jay found some receipts from convenient store nearby, so they went there. Jay reviewed the security camera footages to find information about his purchases, or anything that might help them finding out who the suspect is and what is his goal. When he was reviewing the footages, Hailey picked up some items from the store. It was nearly 2 pm and they hadn't had lunch, not even snack.

"Here," Hailey handed Jay a protein bar once they were back in the car. Jay looked at it and shook his head.

"Not hungry," murmured Jay. How can he eat while he had yet to hear any information about Will? He might be dying inside, because of the bombing or the virus.

"Okay," said Hailey. She bit into hers and drove away.

It was later that day when the ER was finally opened after they made sure that the substance wasn't dangerous. Connor was suturing Will's leg which had a glass cut, but didn't realise it until later, when Jay barged in through the ER door.

"Will!" they heard Jay's voice in the hallway.

"Oh God, no," Will groaned.

"Treatment 4!" Connor called loudly. Will rolled his eyes.

"You can't wait until you're finished with my leg?" he protested

"Nope, I need to tell your emergency contact about your treatment," said Connor. Jay arrived at the door, opening the curtain and perplexed at what he saw. Will sat on the floor, his leg was propped up on a stool and Connor were suturing his wound. "Hey, Jay," Connor said without looking up.

"You can't barge in to a treatment room, Jay. Even we knock, unless it's a code blue," said Will. "This… yeah, I didn't realise I had a cut until ten minutes ago," he explained. Jay walked to them and ran his hand through Will's hair. "Hey!"

"What's the verdict, doc?" asked Jay, squatted beside Will. Connor finished the sutures, then tidied up his kit.

"Seven stitches. Just don't put too much weight on it. Don't get it wet. He knows it," said Connor. Jay pulled Will standing, and engulfed him in a tight hug. Connor smirked at Will, who glared over Jay's shoulder. He left the room and closed the curtain, giving the brothers some privacy.

"I'm good, Jay. I'm okay," Will used his big brother voice, returned the hug. Jay responded by tightening his grab on Will. It took Jay another minute to pull himself together and released his hold on Will.

"You know I am okay since hours ago," Will clapped Jay on his shoulder, pulling him to sit on the bed.

"I knew you're alive, but… still," said Jay. "You tend to get in trouble wherever you go," he scolded weakly.

"I'll try to find a less dangerous job? Like, being a detective?" joked Will. "I really want to go home, take a shower, though."

"I'll drive you home," said Jay quickly, guiding Will out of the ER.

"Don't you have any job to do?" Will asked as Jay guided him to the makeshift tent in the ER parking lot used as command centre. It was not as busy as it was hours ago, when they had no idea what they were up against. Voight was there talking with another cop from bomb squad, and Maggie was also there to give a statement. She immediately walked to Will and hugged him.

"You're okay? Dr. Rhodes said you were injured?" asked Maggie.

"It's an exaggeration, Maggie. He said I was injured?" asked Will.

"He said he gave you stitches," Maggie tried to find the injured part, looking around Will's arm and looking behind him. "Your leg. But you were running around, you didn't realise you were hurt?"

"Nope. Or maybe it's Rhodes, he might stab me after with glass," joked Will.

"Poor big red. You need help with anything?" asked Maggie.

"I'm sure Jay got that covered," said Will. Jay nodded. He had yet to let Will go. He caught Voight's eyes once Voight finished talking with the other cop.

"Sarge, I'm taking Will home," Jay said flatly to Voight, keeping his hand on Will's back.

"You okay Will?" asked Voight.

"He hurt his leg, I'll take him home then come back to the district," said Jay.

"Stay with him, come back tomorrow," said Voight. Jay nodded.

"You don't need to, I'm good," said Will. Jay led him outside the tent.

"I have a free pass off work and you were ruining it," he glared at Will. They passed Hailey on the way out. She raised her eyebrows, which was responded by a nod from Jay. Jay passed his car key to Hailey, the only person he trusted to drive his car.

"Glad you're okay, Will," Hailey patted Will's arm. Will nodded. His adrenaline was running out. After everything that happened, he didn't stop running around and helping people. Up until Rhodes found out that he was injured because he accidentally tapped Will's leg, he didn't even sit down. He swayed and bumped into Jay, who kept a hand on his back as they walked. They walked into the parking lot, walking to Will's car. Will silently passed the car key to Jay, who helped Will to the passenger seat.

"You ate already?" asked Jay. He was starving. He had eaten half a protein bar which Hailey nearly force fed him, but that was it. He could not stop pacing around the command centre, and when they found an intact camera inside, he had a hard time looking away, trying to find Will in the video.

"I think I only need to sleep," said Will, yawning.

"Copy that," Jay drove home. He stole glances at Will once in a while. Will passed out on the passenger seat quickly. When they arrived, Jay poked Will's shoulder.

"Will, we've arrived," said Jay. Will opened his eyes slowly. "Come on, wake up. At least until you've showered. You stink," Jay circled the car and helped Will got out of the car, before throwing Will's arm around his shoulder and helped him walk.

"I can walk," protested Will weakly, but let Jay guided him and even leaned to Jay.

"How can you safely take shower without getting your stitches wet?" asked Jay once he deposited Will on the sofa.

"The bandage is waterproof," said Will.

"Go shower, I'll grab your clothes," said Jay. He pulled Will standing and walked him to the bathroom. "Um…"

"No, I can shower on my own," Will glared ineffectively. Jay smirked and nodded before leaving the bathroom. He pulled some comfortable clothes for Will to sleep in from the dryer, then knocked and slipped Will's clothes inside. After grabbing a bottle of whiskey and poured himself some, he opened the fridge and pulled out a container of chicken soup Hailey sent him the other day when he wasn't feeling well as well as some leftover pizza. He heated the soup then divided it into two bowls and sat on the sofa, waiting for the pizza. He couldn't believe what happened today. His job has always been dangerous, but Will's isn't. He shouldn't ever be worried about Will's safety as he works in a hospital, surrounded by A-team doctors. However, for around 15 minutes between the district and the hospital until he could reach Will, he felt that dread sipping in. Will is his only family member alive, and they left for work in the morning after arguing about laundry. Had anything happened… Jay was so lost in his thought he didn't realise Will walked from the bathroom to the sofa. When Will plopped down beside Jay, Jay jumped out of his skin and gripped Will's arm.

"Jay, it's me," Will's voice snapped Jay out of his thought. He quickly let go of Will's arm.

"Sorry," whispered Jay. He cleared his throat. "Eat, then sleep," he pointed at the bowls. The timer went off and he went to grab the pizza from the oven. "Are you on painkiller? Do you want beer?" he asked.

"No, no," said Will. Jay took a bottle of beer for himself and sat back on the sofa. They ate in silence. Jay started with the pizza while Will started with the soup.

"You ever think about taking a less dangerous job?" asked Jay quietly. Will put his spoon down and looked at Jay as if he was seeing an alien.

"You got shot last year, what do you think?" asked Will. "Where is this coming from?" inquired Will.

"From you going to work and facing a bomb with hazardous chemical and got stabbed in the leg," said Jay.

"Jay, listen," Will faced him. "It's not an everyday thing, a bomb in the hospital. I think the last time there is such threat was ten years ago," said Will.

"Still," Jay rolled his eyes. Will was about to answer, before deciding to be the wiser one and let it go. "What?" challenged Jay.

"No, I'll go to sleep," said Will. He didn't finish his soup, and didn't touch the pizza. Jay looked disapprovingly at Will's bowl. He touched Will's forehead with worry, checking for infection. "Playing doctor on me?"

"At least finish your soup, I bet you didn't have time to eat while you ran around treating people," said Jay, relieved that he didn't find Will too warm. If any, he was cold.

"Feeling a bit sick, actually. Can't finish it," Will shrugged, deciding to shoot Jay straight. "If you can eat faster, you're sitting on my bed," said Will.

"Go sleep on the bed," Jay pointed to his bedroom. "Need anything?"

"No, I'm good," said Will. Jay stood with him, about to help him walk to the bedroom. "I can walk just fine," Will resisted the urge to roll his eyes, knowing that Jay needed to do it. After all, Jay never had to worry about Will's danger working in the ER. Will was the one with constant worry about Jay being in danger on the streets of Chicago. After Will sat on the bed, Jay knelt to check on his bandage. "I didn't get it wet," informed Will.

"I am checking for infection," said Jay.

"No, it's fine," said Will, but didn't shoo Jay away, as much as he wanted to. Will even let Jay tucked him into bed and smoothed the blanket.

"Call if you need anything," said Jay before turning off the light and leaving the room, softly closing the door. Once he closed the door, his emotion got the better of him. He squatted on the floor and broke down crying. The fear of losing Will, the strange feeling of seeing Will very vulnerable got the better of him. Trying to muffle his sobs, he grabbed his key and left the apartment, bumped into someone just as he closed his apartment door from the outside.

"Jay?" Hailey was perplexed. She had a pack of beer and a bag of takeaway on her hands. "We just finished at the district, I thought I'd come by and bring dinner… what's wrong?"

There's no doubt she saw Jay's face, which was wet and blotched. He was still trying to stop crying as well as hide his face from his partner, but when Hailey put her belongings on the floor and gently pull him into her arms, he succumbed. He buried his face in her shoulder, his hands grabbed the back of her jacket as he sobbed audibly. Hailey pulled him down and guided him to sit on the floor without letting go of the hug. After a while, Jay finally calmed down, and he rested his head on Hailey's shoulder. Hailey had her arm around Jay's back.

"Something happened?" asked Hailey gently.

"No, just… Will just went to bed and I'm able to release my emotions without him knowing," said Jay.

"He's okay though?" asked Hailey. Jay nodded. "And you?"

"Don't know. I think I'm okay now, as in not about to cry again," said Jay. "What do you bring?"

"Beer and Thai food," said Hailey. Jay stood and pulled her up. He picked up the food that she brought and opened the door to his apartment. Jay excused himself to the bathroom to freshen up.

"We weren't done with dinner," Jay pointed at the food on the table. He put the soup in the fridge.

"Well, any space for some pad gra pao and drunken noodle?" asked Hailey. Jay nodded. When Hailey took plates from the kitchen, Jay realised that she is very familiar with his apartment—probably because she let herself into his place when he was down with the flu last week as well as their weekly hangout at each other's place.

"Yeah, I'm hungry, I just realised," said Jay. Hailey looked at the leftover food on the table and rose her eyebrows. "Will didn't finish his soup, didn't even touch that," he pointed at the pizza. "He said he felt sick."

"Sick as in sick or too tired? Is his wound okay?" asked.

"I think it's just crash of adrenaline," said Jay. He just watched when Hailey plated the food into two plates. He accepted one plate and ate.

"Just forget about what you saw earlier, okay?" Jay looked down at his food. Hailey had seen more of him than the rest of his colleagues, she had seen the ugly side since she was usually his punching bag. Still, he was still not ready for her to see him crying, moreover a full-blown cry. Hailey touched his knee.

"I think there's nothing wrong with worrying for your brother," said Hailey. "I'd be upset if my brother didn't flinch at the possibility of me dying."

"It's just, I was just starting to get frustrated that he's living here. Having someone who works shift sleeps in my sofa isn't the best thing to get home to," said Jay.

"And you gave up your bed tonight, what a brother," teased Hailey.

"He can take the bed for a week," Jay shrugged, then smirked.

"Only a week? Thank God you're not my brother," joked Hailey.

"Hey! I'm a good brother!" Jay felt the need to defend himself.

"I know. And not only today," nodded Hailey gently. The atmosphere lightened. They continued eating. Jay glanced at Hailey who was stealing his half of spring roll, grateful for her being there, keeping him company when he needed it most.

After they finished eating, Hailey packed everything back to the bag she brought them in, and Jay washed the plates. He then took a bottle of whiskey out and poured two shots. He passed one to Hailey.

"Going for the hard thing today?" asked Hailey.

"Yeah. I don't know about you, but I for sure need it," said Jay. They clinked their glass before finishing the shot. "So, who was the bomber?"

"Life science activist," Hailey sighed. "His family said that he was mentally ill. With him being dead, nothing else we can do other than writing reports. No clarity about the why."

"Guess I'll be behind in report," Jay groaned.

"Don't worry about it," said Hailey. They sat on the sofa. Jay spread a blanket over them.

"Thanks for coming. Don't know what I'd do if you weren't there when I stormed out," said Jay softly.

"Anytime, partner," said Hailey. Jay turned on the tv on mute.

"Yeah, same goes to you," said Jay sleepily. He put his feet on the table and saw Hailey did the same. Hailey leaned her head on Jay's shoulder as The Lord of The Rings started playing on TV, both knowing they would be asleep far before the movie is finished.
