A/N: Hello. I'm so very sorry it took me so long to get back to this. I had a stressful 2022, full of health-related family issues, and this year I started a new job that has also been keeping me busy. But, at last, I finally have something, so please read on, if you'd like. :)
Chapter 4
"Acceptance"
"Oh my… So, this is Slifer Red, huh?"
As soon as my meeting with Chancellor Sheppard was over, Jaden, along with Professor Banner—who also just so happened to be the headmaster of all of Slifer Red right now, apparently—showed me the way to the aforementioned dormitories, and seeing them for the first time certainly gave me quite the surprise.
While I was by no means expecting anything close to the Four Seasons or anything like that, since Central Duel Academy had always seemed to be touted as the most elite Duel School in the world, I still had at least thought even the lowest ranked dorm would look a bit more… presentable than what my eyes were currently beholding.
Resembling small apartments one might find in a rather financially-challenged part of town, the complex consisted of a pair of identical two-story buildings conjoined by a smaller structure in the center that might have been a dining hall or some sort of common room area. From the looks of things, it seemed like the only way to access the second-floor rooms of each building was via a fairly worn out set of wooden stairs that led up to a simple concrete deck outlined with a balcony that appeared to be made from the same cheap-looking lumber as the staircase.
Despite the fact that the dorms admittingly did have a rather lovely view of the ocean and the boundless horizon, I suspected that could have very well been the leading cause of the structure's shabby appearance, since the wooden façade looked quite weathered by sea breeze while the pale-yellow paint job and red tile roof showed signs of sun damage.
"It sure is!" Jaden acknowledged in his usual happy-go-lucky tone. "I know it doesn't look like much, but it's a pretty rad place once you get used to it."
"Jaden is right. I am sure it will begin feeling like home to you in no time," Professor Banner said with an encouraging smile before then pulling out a set of keys and handing them over to me. "You'll be in room 204B, by the way."
"Oh, thank you," I replied as I absentmindedly traced the keys' dull metal teeth with my fingertip.
After that, the headmaster excused himself and went on ahead, saying something about how he had to start preparing tonight's dinner, so I just took that as an opportunity to go and haul all of my stuff up to my new room, with Jaden's help since he insisted on that, too.
While the inside of the dorm luckily wasn't in nearly as bad shape as the outside, it was still nothing to really write home about, either. The walls of the modestly-sized room were painted a pale beige color and had but one window outfitted with green blackout curtains, while the floors were lined with salmon-pink carpets. As for the décor, that consisted of a triple bunk bed to the right of the room, a rather long desk with two black swivel chairs on the opposite side, a small kitchenette equipped with only a hot plate and a sink near the door, and a little cherrywood tea table next to a wardrobe made from similar wood, all of which were being illuminated by a lone green pendant lamp hanging from the ceiling's center rafter.
"Well, I guess this isn't so bad…" I admitted as I took the time to inspect the room some more, making an effort to focus on the few positives over any negatives.
"See? Told ya so," my brother said with a jovial grin, which made me give a smile in return. Jaden just always seemed to have that effect on people, or at least on me, anyway. (God, how I missed that smile…)
"And from the looks of it, I guess I have the whole room to myself?" I voiced aloud, taking notice of how the place was devoid of anyone else's personal items.
"Uh-huh! To be honest, you're actually the only girl in Slifer Red right now," Jaden informed me.
"Really?" I tilted my head in puzzlement. "Why is that?"
He shrugged his shoulders slightly. "Well, just from what I noticed, there weren't all that many girls put in Slifer at the start of the year to begin with, and the ones that used to be here moved up to Ra Yellow, though there were also a few that decided to drop out in just the first couple of weeks."
"Ah. I see…"
I suddenly couldn't help but suspect that the mediocre design of this dorm was likely meant to help push the students that landed themselves here out and lead them to either one of those outcomes; a way to insensitive growth and improvement for the ones with potential while weeding out the weak-spirited kids with no such drive, or something along those lines…
"It's a total bummer about that last group, though... Not even Miss Midori could get them to change their minds about leaving."
"Miss Midori…" I echoed, the name instantly ringing a bell, but I thought I'd confirm my hunch anyway. "She's one of your teachers, right?"
"Yeah! She's also the other headmaster for Slifer Red," Jaden happily supplied, but then his smile faltered as his shoulders noticeably slumped. "It's just too bad she isn't here right now… Some sort of family thing came up recently that made her have to take off for the rest of year, which sucks. I'm totally sure you'd like her if you got to meet her. She's awesome!"
"Oh, but I actually already have met her, Jaden," I shared with him now that I was sure I knew who he was talking about.
"For real?" he blurted in surprise, brows disappearing into his hairline. "When?"
"Um, well, it was when I went to complete my transfer exam…" I explained, deciding to try my best to just recount that whole experience for him.
=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=
"So, I guess this is the place," I muttered to myself as I walked up to the domed building that I had previously been informed was where the test Duel I was supposed to have today would be held.
Truth be told, I still didn't exactly understand why I had to travel all the way to Domino City just to take the practical portion of Duel Academy's transfer exam, especially when I had been able to do the written test somewhere much closer to home. But whatever... Since it ultimately would put me one step closer to being with Jaden again, I guess I really shouldn't complain.
A shiver ran throughout my body at that moment, though I wasn't entirely sure from what. I mean, while the late January wind blowing through my hair was fairly cold, the weather here wasn't nearly as bad as it was in Hokkaido this time of year.
"Feeling nervous?" Akame wondered, making her presence known as she rested a transparent hand over one of my trembling shoulders.
Nerves? Ah, that could certainly be it…
When I shrugged slightly in response, she offered me a reassuring smile and added, "Relax! Everything will be okay! I just know you're going to do great, treasure."
"Thanks, Akame. I'll… I'll try my best," I whispered, putting in the effort to give her an earnest smile in return. With one last deep breath, I finally decided to get out of the cold and head inside.
Shortly after entering, it thankfully didn't take me very long to find the right people that worked there that were able to help check me in. I honestly just kind of tuned out most of what they had to say, though, other than the part where they told me the directions to get to the Dueling fields and that I should report to field three once I got there.
The room where the fields were located was huge and certainly befitting of an in-door sports arena. The area was surrounded by stadium-style seats, which I'm sure would have been full of applicants and spectators if this was the normal entrance exams, but today the seats were all empty, save for a boxed section within the first three front rows that overlooked fields one through five, where three men wearing identical slate blue coats were sitting and chatting amongst themselves. I figured that they were the ones who were supposed to help evaluate the Duel I was about to have, seeing how it didn't seem like any of them were getting ready to face me themselves, which probably meant I would meet the test proctor on the field.
For some strange, unknown reason, there didn't turn out to be any sort of public-accessible stairs that would allow one to simply walk up onto the Dueling fields, though (because I guess that would have just been too easy). Instead, I had to travel down some passageway underneath the arena, locate a small platform labeled with a 3, and then just stand on it for a few seconds until it suddenly rose up to take me to the appropriate field.
Since I wasn't expecting the darn thing to move quite so fast, however, I got thrown off-balance and ended up falling down on my hands and knees right as the platform reached the top.
Not exactly what one would call a "grand" entrance, I'm sure…
"Hey, are you alright over there?" I heard a voice across from me call out in what sounded like concern.
"Y-yes!" I quickly replied as I shot back up to my feet and immediately hopped off of the platform, fearing that it was going to drop me back down to the lower level if I stayed on it for too long. "Sorry if I happened to worry you, but I'm fine, really!"
After I managed to smooth out the wrinkles from my coat and skirt and successfully cleaned the dust off of my tights, I looked up to face the person who had walked up and was standing just a few meters away from me now. She was a fair-skinned, youthful-looking woman—probably somewhere in her late twenties, if I had to guess—who was well-dressed in a dark red uniform, the coat of which flared out behind her. Her hair was long, straight, and such a dark shade of brown that it almost looked black. She stood with poise and grace, but allowed what looked to be relief cross her striking features.
"That's good. I would hate for you to have come all the way here only to end up at Domino General instead," the woman said, her amber eyes taking the time to look me over, as if to make sure there really wasn't any physical harm done.
"Yes, that would have definitely been unfortunate…" I agreed, looking downward as I tucked a lock of hair behind my ear and tried not to blush.
"Anyway, you must be Shion Yuki, right?"
I nodded in response to the inquiry before giving a formal bow in salutations. "Yes, I am."
"Well, it's very nice to meet you, Shion. I'm Professor Midori Hibiki, and today I'm going to be the proctor for your exam," she introduced herself and then got straight to business without ever missing a beat. "Now, let me just start by explaining that since you scored above ninety-five percent on each portion of the written exam, you're already guaranteed a spot at the Academy, regardless of the outcome of this Duel. That being said, you should still do your best to win, as we'll be taking this opportunity to see where your skill levels currently lie and find out what areas you can benefit from improving in going forward. Not to mention, you'll have to be placed on probation if you end up losing here today."
"I… understand," I acknowledged with a curt nod, though honestly the only part I truly cared about was knowing that I would definitely be getting into Duel Academy. (Jaden, here I come!)
"Great. In that case, let's get started then, shall we?"
"R-right," I agreed, scurrying over to my position on the Dueling field as Professor Hibiki leisurely walked to her own.
After taking out my deck from its protective case and giving it a good shuffle, I inserted it into my Duel Disk and turned to face my opponent.
"Duel!" we both called out, our Dueling devices lighting up as the Life Point meter on each climbed from 0 to 4000.
"According to Duel Academy tradition, it's the applicant who makes the first move," the teacher informed me as we each drew out our opening hands.
"Okay. Thank you," I replied before pulling out another card from the top of my deck to give me a hand of six. My eyes widened ever so slightly when I glanced down at the cards I was holding, quickly realizing what could come from them.
Well, Professor Hibiki did say I should do my best to win… I thought to myself as I automatically picked out a certain Spell Card from my hand and inserted it into my Duel Disk.
"I'll start by playing Polymerization. With it, I can use the Level 7 Red-Eyes Shadow Dragon and Level 6 Blastwing Dragon in my hand as material to perform a Fusion Summon…"
The image of two dark-scaled dragons briefly showed themselves before transforming into black and red streams of light, which then flew right into a swirling blue and orange energy vortex that suddenly formed overhead.
Seconds later, what appeared to be a large meteor shot out from the spiral portal and crash-landed behind me with a bang, forming a burning crater. Then, a dragonic figure began to rise from the flames and let out a bellowing roar that blew away all of the fire. This fine creature greatly resembled a Red-Eyes Black Dragon, but he was noticeably bigger, possessed larger wings, and had a rougher black-scaled body tinted with accents of dark purple and covered in cracks that revealed glowing red energy flowing beneath (✩ x 8/ATK 3500/DEF 2000).
"My friend here is called Meteor Black Comet Dragon, and since he was Fusion Summoned, his effect allows me to send a Red-Eyes monster from my hand or deck to the Graveyard and inflict damage to the opponent equal to half that monster's original Attack Points," I explained as I took out my deck from its holder on my Dueling device and fanned it out to locate the desired monster.
It didn't take me long to find Red's card and slip it into my Graveyard, but since the Duel Disk I was using was a rather old model and didn't have an auto-shuffle feature, I had to once again painstakingly perform the action myself before I was able to continue. "…Okay, the monster I just sent was my Red-Eyes Black Dragon, so that's 1200 points of damage."
Comet let out another thundering cry, his wings, horns, and claws all soon ignited in searing flames as he began to form a sphere of vibrant draconic energy that glowed in hues of indigo and orange from his gaping jaws. When the energy orb was large enough and had solidified, he wasted no time and launched it towards the high ceiling above us, where it then promptly exploded in midair like a firework and released several flaming meteorites, all of which rained down upon our opponent. This caused Professor Hibiki to raise up her arms to guard herself, though it did nothing to protect her Life Points, which dropped to 2800 at a rate even faster than those falling stars.
I watched that whole thing unfold through the space between my fingers after having covered my face with my hands somewhere down the line, afraid that my power would randomly trigger and that something was going to get set ablazed. (As if that would have helped in the slightest had Comet actually lit up the stadium or our opponent in real cosmic flames…)
"Are you doing okay over there, Shion?" my proctor asked once she finished bushings off the damage she had taken, probably wondering about the unusual pose I had adopted. "Right now it almost looks like you're the one that just got pelted with high-velocity space rocks!"
"Um, yes… Sorry about that," I responded, finally starting to let myself relax just a little once I was able to verify that nothing was on fire because of me right now. Why, oh, why had I still not managed to get used to that?
"No need to apologize," she insisted with a wave of her hand. "So, is there still more to your turn?"
I nodded, stilling my trembling hand before I moved to play my next card. "I now activate Fusion Recovery. In accordance with this Spell's effect, I can target Polymerization and Blastwing Dragon—who was used as material for a Fusion Summon—that are in my Graveyard and add them to my hand."
"Ah, replenishing your resources, I see," the teacher commented on my play.
"Something like that…" I muttered with a weak shrug as I held out one of the cards I just got back. "I now Tribute Comet to bring out Blastwing Dragon."
The Fusion Monster vanished from the field in a pillar of dark fire, and out of that same inferno emerged a smaller dragon with obsidian and amber mottled scales and a pair of black webbed wings coursing with bright orange veins of energy (✩ x 6/ATK 2200/DEF 1200).
"Blastwing Dragon has an ability that activates when she's Normal Summoned, but I'm going to chain that effect by using the final ability of my Meteor Black Comet Dragon first," I went on as the inside of my Duel Disk's Graveyard slot began to give off a faint red glow.
Since Comet had been sent from a Monster Card Zone to the Graveyard, his effect allowed me to target one Normal Monster in my Graveyard and Special Summon it. As the one and only option, I obviously chose my beloved Red-Eyes Black Dragon, who joined the Duel with an ardent roar (✩ x 7/ATK 2400/DEF 2000).
"With that, the effect of Blastwing Dragon finally resolves… Each player now takes 1000 points of damage," I disclosed right as the aforementioned dragon threw her head back and screeched while she stretched out her wings, which were glowing intensely at that moment. She then beat them violently, creating an explosive shockwave that shot out in all directions. Professor Hibiki and I were hit with the blast simultaneously, resulting in her score dropping to 1800 while mine went down to 3000.
Because she hadn't played anything in response to any of my other cards' effects, I took that to mean that the test deck the teacher was using didn't have any hand traps that were capable of nullifying Spells or burn damage, or, if it did, then she simply got unlucky by not getting any in her opening hand. Either way, it stood to reason that she should have no way of stopping what was about to happen next…
"Lastly, I cast the Spell known as Inferno Fire Blast," I declared with an air of finality as I inserted the forenamed card into my Duel Disk. "By targeting my Red-Eyes Black Dragon on the field, this card allows him to inflict damage to the opponent equal to his original Attack Points. Please do your thing, Red."
My dear ebony-scaled friend let out a cry of enthusiasm as he gladly complied with my request and formed a large ball of dark fire in his jaws. The moment it was ready to go, he then proceeded to launch it across the field at our opponent with all of the ferocity he was able to muster.
Professor Hibiki calmly braced herself, holding her Duel Disk up to instinctively stave off the assault, but, once again, it was to no avail when it came to saving her Life Points when the fireball actually stuck her, the remainder of which were easily burned away by the (thankfully holographic) conflagration as she took 2400 points worth of damage.
"A First Turn Kill, huh? You sure don't see those every day," she commented when the flames had finally died off. She powered down her Duel Disk then, causing the blade to retract and the vibrant red glow the device's outer edges were giving off to vanish in an instant, which signified the end of the Duel.
I decided to do the same, the Solid Vision-produced protections of my two dragons that were still on the field disappearing from sight after I removed their cards and carefully placed them back in my deck.
"Y-yes… Well, thank you very much for your time all the same," I stammered out, a few of the long bangs I was always too lazy to cut falling over my downcast eyes as I bowed my head. "Even though we were just trying to follow your advice about winning, I'm sorry if we somehow ended up going overboard with things there."
The trio of draconic growls I felt ring in my ears and heart at that moment basically told me that I was speaking for myself when it came to that because, since no one actually got hurt, all three of them sure as hell weren't the least bit sorry and regretted absolutely nothing about how that Duel played out.
Well, I guess I shouldn't be surprised about that…
"You sure are fond of apologizing, aren't you?" Professor Hibiki remarked, though not unkindly. "It's fine, really. Outcomes like that happen sometimes. It's all a part of the game, after all."
I pursed my lips and just kept my gaze averted since I wasn't really sure how to properly respond to that.
"But since that Duel ended quicker than expected, why don't we use this as an opportunity to go over your performance?" the teacher surprised me by suggesting.
"Huh? Right here?" was my reply as I gave her a look that I'm sure had my bewilderment written all over it.
"Sure. There's no time like the present, as they say," she insisted with a patient smile.
How much could there possibly be to discuss regarding a Duel as short as the one that had just transpired? I honestly really didn't see the point, but since declining and then immediately trying to hightail it out of there seemed like it would be awfully rude, I decided to just stay put and hear out whatever this woman had to say.
"Now then… One positive thing I noticed is that you seem to be able to think pretty quickly on your feet when it comes to strategizing. You only had to glance at your hand for a second before you were ready to go with your first card, just like that!" She snapped her fingers on her last word to further accentuate her point. "It shows that you know your deck well and what it's capable of."
"Th-thank you," I uttered back just above a whisper, finding an excuse to break eye contact so I could look down and pull out the collection of cards from my Duel Disk. I gently held them in my hands with the care they deserved. "I've had this deck for quite some time now, actually…"
"I can tell," the professor acknowledged with an understanding nod. "I only wish the Duel could have lasted a little longer so you would have had the chance to really enjoy yourself and show off even more of that bond. It would have also been nice to see how you would have responded to your opponent's moves..."
"Are… Are things like that really so important?" I couldn't help but ask.
"Of course," she replied, as if with the utmost certainty. "After all, Dueling is all about having fun and creating connections, both with your cards and with your opponents."
That sounds a lot like something Jaden would say… I realized, suddenly feeling an uncomfortable pang in my chest, knowing that it was because, even after everything I've been through so far, I somehow still wasn't able to truly understand such a sentiment.
Bonding with my monsters wasn't a problem and was pretty much like second nature at this point, considering how they had been a part of my life from as far back as I could remember… But trying to establish some kind of meaningful rapport with our opponents and having a good time? Yeah, I still didn't really know the first thing about that.
In the past, I blamed my powers as the reason for this, as they always had the disastrous effect of hurting everyone involved the moment I dared to get the least bit serious in a Duel. But now… After Akame had sealed away a majority of my power, I tested the waters by having well over a dozen battles with other Duelists back home before I even thought about applying for Duel Academy, and yet during all of those encounters, besides the feeling of immense relief when they all ended with everyone involved still safe and unharmed, it never seemed like I got anything really meaningful out of them. No matter what, it always felt like I was simply going through the motions, just to get to the end. Today's Duel was really no different, now that I think about it…
"Uh-oh… There's that face again," the sound of Professor Hibiki's voice tore me away from my troubled thoughts and made me turn my attention back to her once more.
"Huh? Oh, I'm sorry!" I apologized as I tried to shake off my dour mood. "I guess I got a little lost in thought there..."
"That's alright, though that does relate to one of the areas I think you could benefit from working on in the future."
"And what's that?"
"Mainly, your presence," was her immediate response, much to my confusion.
"My… 'presence'?" I repeated back, probably going glassy-eyed.
"Exactly. During the Duel, even though you were standing right there in front of me, it almost felt like you were miles away at times," she explained. "I know nerves may have played a part in that, but you should be careful to not let something like that keep you closed off from everything around you."
So, in other words, try not to be such an antisocial space case, Shion, I bitterly berated myself.
Outwardly, I made an effort to keep the self-loathing to a minimum and worked on displaying what I hoped looked like a courteous smile instead. "I… I see. Thank you very much for that insight, Professor Hibiki. I'll, um… be sure to keep that all in mind."
"Please do," she said with a smile that, unlike mine, appeared so effortless and bright. "You know, to be honest, you seem like just the type of student I would especially enjoy working with. I always do love a good challenge, after all."
She chuckled to herself at that, but then her expression took on a more wistful look. "It really is unfortunate that I'd have to take leave now, of all times…"
"Oh…? Does that mean you're not going to be at the academy, then?" I wondered, hoping I didn't sound too disappointed. I mean, even though I just met her, she seemed like a pretty cool teacher, so it might have been nice being in one of her classes, or whatever…
"'Fraid so. This was actually the last piece of business I had before the start of my leave," she explained, and then, as if to cheer me up, added, "Hey, but that's okay! I'm positive you'll do just fine at Duel Academy, regardless. At the very least, you'll have Jaden to watch your back and keep things interesting."
That certainly did the trick, because I instantly perked up at the mention of my brother's name. "You know Jaden?"
"I sure do," Professor Hibiki affirmed, her eyes alight with what seemed like fondness. "Your brother has been making waves with his Dueling since the entrance exams, so it was hard not to take notice. He's a really great kid, too."
Her hand suddenly clenched into a fist and her brow twitched slightly as she threw in, "Although I'm sure he'd also be a much better student if he would actually bother to study once and a while and stop sleeping through his classes…"
"Yeah, that definitely sounds like Jaden, alright," I sighed in an odd mix of affection and exasperation from hearing of his antics. "I really hope he hasn't been causing too much trouble, though. While I love him dearly, even I know he can be a bit of a handful sometimes..."
"Heh, you're not wrong there, though I think all brothers are just like that, honestly," the teacher admitted under a laugh, which I couldn't help but join in a little as well this time.
"Oh, but, um… How did you know that I was Jaden's sister, by the way?" I inquired after curiosity finally got the best of me. After all, not too many people seemed to be able to tell the two of us were related just by looking at us, and our contrasting personalities didn't really help drawing any connections, either.
"Since Jaden has talked about you before, I happened to recognize your name when I was going over your written test, and meeting you today only helped confirm my suspicions."
"I-is that so…?" I could feel myself blushing, embarrassed to hear that my brother had actually told other people about me at least in some capacity, because who knows what kind of things he's said…
Seeming to know exactly what I was thinking again, Professor Hibiki chuckled and threw in, "Don't worry! He had nothing but nice things to say about you, I promise."
"Good to know…" I murmured, though somehow I'm sure I would still find even those "nice things" embarrassing, one way or another. A little louder, I then said, "Um, well, in any event, it was really nice talking with you, Professor Hibiki."
"Same here, Shion. I hope to see more of you when I return next school year," she replied with an easy smile, offering her hand.
Deciding to push down the lingering insecurities and doubts I still had for the time being, I reached out and accepted her handshake. "S-sure."
=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=•=
"Overall, I thought Professor Hibiki was cool and really nice, so can see why you like her," I remarked as I sat down next to Jaden on the bunk bed's somewhat lumpy bottom mattress, deciding to take a break from the unpacking I had been busying myself with while I was sharing my little story.
"Yeah, though she can be pretty scary when she's angry," he admitted under a chuckle, scratching the side of his cheek like he usually did when he was nervous or embarrassed.
"Hm. Well, if you let her catch you slacking off in class, then I'm sure you deserved whatever wrath you faced..."
Jaden clutched his hand over his chest dramatically and fell back on the bed, pretending as though my blunt words had actually hurt him. "Ouch! And here I thought you were supposed to be on my side!"
I rolled my eyes at his theatrics. "I'm always on your side, big brother. You know that... I just don't like to hear that you're not giving things your best."
"Heh, yeah, I know," he replied with a nonchalant grin as he returned to a sitting position, seeming to have made a miraculous recovery from his earlier imaginary injury in record time.
"Seriously, though… I get it that your work ethic has never been all that great, but you're not stupid, so don't go failing any of your classes, okay?" I said, somewhere in between a request and a demand. "Professor Hibiki may not be here right now to give you a hard time for it, but I certainly will, if I need to."
"I'm sure you would," Jaden laughed and gave me a pat on the head, but I was positive that he knew that I meant what I said. "I won't, okay? So don't sweat it!"
I sighed softly. "Fine…"
"But anyway," Jaden spoke up, apparently deciding that it was time to change topics, "since we're alone, is now a good time to ask about the, uh, whole situation regarding your powers?"
"Ah. Yeah, I really do owe you an explanation for that…" I muttered, still feeling a bit guilty that I had left him in the dark about most of the things I had been up to back home.
He nodded in agreement. "Uh-huh. You said something before about Akame helping you with them?"
"Th-that's right…" I nodded right back and then let out a long sigh since I knew I was going to have to go even further back to explain all of that, too…
A/N: While I actually originally had more for this chapter, the other flashback I wanted to include was becoming a lot longer than expected, so I decided to make a separate entry out of it instead and just end things here.
Anyway, thanks for your time and feel free to leave a comment if you want. Take care! ^^/
