Chapter 15

Arizona groaned, as she waddled to the bathroom, her contractions had started a few hours ago, she had timed them waiting, knowing if she went early they'd only send her away. Plus, Callie was due back any moment now, so calling her would just worry her unnecessarily when she was driving.

She wasn't ready for that baby to come, she needed Callie with her, so she was determined to hang on until Callie got home, which she could do as everyone knew first babies took ages, so what if it had been a few hours, sometimes it took days and Callie would be home soon.

She paced up and down the house trying to contain her nerves, it felt strange to rely on Callie so much, but over the last month they'd worked hard on their relationship. Callie had been there, she'd driven her to therapy, she'd made dinner, breakfast, and just listened. Arizona had been learning to, learning it wasn't weak to accept help, and that being a good man didn't mean keeping all your problems to yourself. Callie liked helping, and it was okay to let people help. Their strengthened relationship had helped Sofia too. She was doing amazing at school and seemed happier and more confident.

Suddenly, a gush of water between her legs and a strong contraction brought her out her musings, a slight panic gripping her. Her waters had broke, she paced again going to find her phone as another sharp pain hit her. That was quicker, Callie needed to get home now or this baby was going to be here. Not wanting to panic Callie if she was driving Arizona got out her phone to text Callie, text's were worrying.

Hey, where are you?

Dr Torres is caught up in the OR she said to tell you Dr Grey has Sofia,

Arizona read it groaning, knowing it was likely one of the scrub nurses that had sent that message. She sat on the floor, crying, debating what to do, she wanted Callie, she needed Callie, she had to go to Callie. Decision made she rocked onto her knees, crawling to the chair so she could stand before going to get her car keys. Before she got there another contraction hit. This baby was coming quickly! There was no way she'd be able to drive safely. Arizona panicked opened her phone, knowing there was no point ringing Callie, Arizona searched through her list.

"Meredith, Callie says you have Sofia, are you close?" Arizona asked, she thought she'd have hours, that what normally happened with first babies, this had only been 5 hours!

"We are just leaving school, I was going to text and see if Sofia could come to a play date, Callie said you might want the rest" Meredith said worriedly, "Is everything okay?" she asked, something in Arizona's voice was different.

"No, the baby is coming now" Arizona panted, "Callie is in the OR, and it's coming, my waters have broken, my contractions are every 5 minutes".

"I'm on my way" Meredith promised, "can you open the front door?" she asked, breaking all speed limits to try make the 5 mins drive even quicker.

"No, I need Calliope, I can't have this baby without her, I'm not strong enough" Arizona sobbed, panicking, she needed Callie, she needed her wife, it didn't matter how long ago they had broken up she needed her.

"You are so strong, and we survived a plane crash together, a baby is a piece of cake" Meredith joked, "I'm 2 minutes away, I'm going to hang up now" Meredith said, using the hands free to end the call.

"Zola, can you dial Auntie Bailey" she asked, thankful her daughter did so without arguments,

"Grey" Bailey answered,

"Bailey, Arizona is in labor, I need you to find Callie, we are going to try get her here, but I need to examine her first" Meredith said, "I pulling up at her house, I have to go" she hung up trusting that Miranda would round up Callie and get her to wherever she needed to be.

"Stay here kids" Meredith ordered running in the house, finding Arizona mid contraction. "Can I look?" she asked, Arizona nodded taking one of her hands squeezing it.

"Okay, you are 7cm, I think it's safer to stay and deliver here" Meredith said, trying to remember her time in OB

"No, I need Calliope, please". Arizona begged. Meredith hesitated, checking her watch, Arizona only lived a 10-minute drive, there should be enough time, if they left right now, "please". Arizona pleaded, wanting her friend to feel safe, Meredith made her decision.

"Okay" Meredith agreed, grabbing the go bag next to the door with one hand, and helping to steady Arizona with the other. "Zola, jump in the back" she shouted to her daughter who climbed in the rear seats.

"Is mommy, okay?" Sofia asked worriedly, Arizona was sweaty and trying not to scream,

"The baby is coming, so we are going to find Mamma" Meredith replied trying to put them at ease, checking everyone's seatbelt was on, grateful for the people carrier as she started her car, praying there would be no traffic today. She really didn't want to deliver a baby in the car with 4 children watching.

"Mom, you're driving fast" Zola complained, as they took a corner quickly,

"I know because I want the baby to be born in a hospital and not my car, Zola call Auntie Bailey again, tell her Arizona is 7cm and our ETA is 6 minutes" Meredith ordered, Zola nodded, as Arizona screamed,

"It's okay, kids it's okay, that's just the babies way of telling us it's ready to come out" Meredith assured,

"Ellis made you cry lots too" Zola remembered. Meredith winced hoping Zola had forgotten that.

"She did and now I am okay," Meredith promised, "And so will Arizona"

"I'm okay guys, Meredith will get us to hospital on time and Callie will be there and everything will be fine" Arizona said through gritted teeth.

"Nearly there" Meredith promised, as Arizona screamed again,

"That was only 3 minutes" Meredith said, worriedly, "Do you feel the need to push?" she asked, wondering if she should pull over,

"No, just keep driving" Arizona insisted. Not sure if her friend was lying or not Meredith decided to just keep driving.

Pulling up outside the ER, she was pleased to see Bailey had come through. Alex was standing with a wheelchair, Callie was waiting, and so was Rania.

"Arizona, hun," Callie ran around the car as soon as it was stopped,

"Callie, I need you" Arizona sobbed, "she is coming, and I'm not ready" she pleaded,

"Yes you are, our daughter has an amazing mommy, who is strong, she has a mamma who is going to be their the whole time.

"Lets get her to a delivery room" Rania suggested helping Callie get her into the wheelchair,

"No, she is coming now" Arizona panted, "I need to push,"

"Okay, trauma 2" Bailey suggested, "DeLuca, take the kids to day care" she ordered, "And you Thomas, move Dr Grey's car".

"No, I want to go with mommy" Sofia insisted, moving away from Andrew. Sensing they weren't going to win without upsetting her, Miranda nodded.

"Okay, Sofia, you can stay with me, but you have to be good" Bailey said softly. Sofia nodded holding her hand as Bailey followed to trauma 2 waiting with Alex outside.

Inside, Arizona was clinging onto Callie for dear life, as Rania stood at the end of the bed.

"Arizona I'm going to have a look, is that okay" she asked away this could be traumatic for her patient.

"Yeah," Arizona said, too far gone to care, plus with Callie here she felt safe.

"You were right, it's time to push on your next contraction" Rania advised,

"One more push baby, one more push" Callie encouraged, wincing as Arizona squeezed her hand. When had she got so strong!

"it's coming" Arizona moaned,

"I have the head, keep pushing," Rania said, Arizona groaned, until suddenly the pressure was gone and a cry filled the air. Meredith quickly wrapped her in a blanket, passing her to Arizona.

"She is beautiful" Callie said awestruck, already she had tufts of blonde hair, even in all the goo, she looked so much like Arizona it was uncanny. She gently reached down stroking her daughter's face, was this what Arizona felt with Sofia, so much love, her heart felt full to burst.

"Our daughter" Callie marveled,

"Esme Robbins Torres" Arizona named, "I want our daughters to have the same last name" she explained,

"Alex is outside, he wants to check she is okay, says his boss would kill him if he didn't do a good job" Meredith interrupted, she knew from experience if left alone they would next let go of their daughter.

Arizona nodded her consent. Meredith taking her and opening the door, allowing Alex and Sofia to come in.

"Is that my sister?" Sofia asked, peering up at the baby standing next to Alex,

"Yeah, so we always do checks on new babies to make sure they are okay" he explained slowly, talking Sofia through each step.

"Mommy, she passed the checks" Sofia called excitedly, Arizona smiled tiredly, while Callie nodded walking over too.

"Okay, Mamma you can have your baby back" Alex offered; Callie didn't need asking twice cradling her baby close to her heart.

"My turn please" Sofia begged. Callie nodded reluctantly, "sit next to mommy" she encouraged, Sofia climbed onto the bed Arizona helping her with her arms. Slowly Callie placed Esme into her arms sitting on the chair next to her daughter, both mom's helping one either side. Neither aware of the multiple photos Bailey was taking on her phone.

"Hello Esme, my name is Sofia, and I'm your sister, and I'm going to be nice and share my toys with you and my mommies, you can have my daddy to, he lives in heaven." Sofia explained as Esme let out a soft cry.

"Here, Sof, she probably needs a feed" Arizona guessed.

"Doughnuts?" Sofia asked hopefully. The adults in the room exchanged amused looks,

"No, not doughnuts, babies drink milk" Callie explained,

"Hey Sof, I bet your hungry, why don't we go find something to eat?" Alex suggested, he didn't want to see his bosses' boobs, and guessed Arizona wouldn't want to show him.

"Please mamma" Sofia asked, she loved doughnuts but was only allowed them as a special treat.

"Sure, thank Alex" Callie said,

"We'll leave you for a bit too, let me know when your done and we will transfer you upstairs" Bailey suggested leaving Callie, Arizona and Esme alone.

Esme began feeding, Arizona gently stroking her soft face,

"I was worried she would look like him" she revealed, "but she is perfect,"

"She is, our daughter" Callie marveled, "she is your mini me. I bet she has dimples and huge blue eyes, that I won't be able to say no to".

"Well Sofia is a mini you," Arizona protested,

"Only in looks her personality is all you" Callie defended, "But you, I can tell, future Ortho Goddess". she said looking at Esme, holding her small hand in her finger.

"Don't listen to her Esme, you can be anything you want, Pediatric surgeon, neonatal surgeon" Arizona joked. "But all we really want for you is too be happy, to be a good man in a storm, to be the person we know you can be. And I promise, we are going to be there every step." She said seriously, Callie nodded.
