Chapter Three
More Adventures
Emma managed to avoid Regina for another week after her heartfelt revelations about her fears over their family unit. Having no idea if the woman read the real reason between the lines as to her fear, she chose to imagine she didn't. Perhaps she thought Emma was talking about the next inevitable crisis or threat in town. Perhaps she meant that partly, but mainly it was her fear of rejection and being shunned from that precious family.
With Hope at day-care and being back full-time at the sheriff's station, it gave her more time to really dig into the abyss of her mind and get to grips with the overwhelming feelings she had for the queen. Laughing to herself, she realized home life was often more distracting than her cushy job at the station.
There was rarely any trouble in town these days apart from the occasional bar brawl, parking ticket, or domestic disturbance. Yes, even sleepy Storybrook's fairy tale characters occasionally fought amongst themselves, particularly over territory and long-standing rivalries. It was more diplomatic since Regina became the good queen, but not always.
David walked into the station with a stack of papers and dropped half on Emma's desk noticing her far-off expression. "Everything okay? You've had your head in the clouds for days."
She groaned as she noticed the stack of immigration papers and police checks Regina insisted on for new residents coming from other fairy-tale lands looking to make Storybrook their home. "Yeah, I've just got a lot on my mind." She took the first file hoping to distract herself.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"Not really." She chuckled reading the concerns the queen wrote on the sticky note attached to the current file. "She's so friggin anal sometimes. I mean, stealing an apple isn't exactly worthy of going on someone's permanent record."
David laughed. "Yeah, doesn't sound like they'd be much of a threat to the town, unless she's worried about her apples."
"Well, Regina's apples are amazing."
The glazed over look returned and David caught it humming to himself. He'd watched them over the years growing closer, so much to the point that he and Snow had a conversation about it just before things got serious with Hook.
They'd all seen a glimpse of the old Emma at the carnival the other night and it was no surprise to anyone that Regina was the one who would bring her back to life. They plainly loved and were good for each other, whether in a platonic way or something else. Hell, for the last couple of weeks, every sentence she uttered contained Regina's name. It was as if they'd gone back in time and David was getting a feeling of deja vu.
Emma felt eyes analyzing her and when she looked up, her father was watching her with a pained and tragic expression.
"What?"
With a sigh he broached the subject. "Do you know how many times a day you mention Regina's name?"
Emma's cheeks colored. "Well, she's my boss, the queen, the mother of my son, and my best friend. She's literally everywhere. How can I not talk about her?"
"I think she's more than that, and has been for a long time, Emma." He used a delicate but firm tone and Emma saw that pitying look again.
Busying herself with the paperwork, she looked away. "Well, yeah. She's family."
Sitting down opposite her he continued treading gently. "You know, it's been more than six months. You are entitled to start putting yourself out there again. Nobody is judging."
She cringed. "Dad! Please, we don't talk about this stuff!"
"Well I see no reason why we can't. I think you are more than ready to take the next step. So go for it."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"I'm talking about Regina."
"What?!" Her shriek echoed off the station walls and panic set in.
David covered her hand gently on the desk and comforted her with a soft smile. "Em, you and Regina work. We all see it. Long ago, before you were married, your mother and I discussed it and we were both certain it was only a matter of time before you were together romantically. We accepted it as a fated connection, then you went down a different path. But now, there's nothing stopping you."
"Dad, it's... it's..."
She couldn't find it in herself to outright dismiss his theory, and this whole conversation caught her off guard leaving her struggling to know how to proceed. Once she removed all those mental blockages, she was able to see clearly that the majority of their family already thought they were together. It was odd comments, raised eyebrows, hints and knowing glances. Now this forthrightness from her dad.
"What? Is it because you are both women? Is that an issue for you?"
The cringe returned and she shook her head chuckling slightly despite her discomfort. "No! It's not that! God, I don't feel comfortable talking to you about this. Look, it's not... that. Not that I haven't wondered if that would be a problem for everyone else."
Biting the bullet, she knew she had to face this head on like an adult now they were on the subject. She'd never had a problem with her sexuality as such, but she didn't talk about it. After giving up Henry, she'd had relationships with women, but Emma rarely put down roots anywhere or allowed herself to get too close to anyone. She liked men and women, it didn't matter what parts they had.
It was private as far as she was concerned, and she'd never really seen herself settling with a woman. Not before Regina. She hadn't seen herself doing many things before coming to this town all those years ago. Even now, after everything, she was terrified of messing up and losing everyone.
"Look, we are pretty open-minded. You have to be coming from our world. Your mom's best friend is a werewolf, and she lived with seven dwarves for a time, which I don't ask questions about, so yeah... we are pretty accepting."
He laughed at his words and Emma soon smiled too. "So, if it's not that, what is it?"
"It's... Regina. That's the thing. If she isn't into me, then we lose what we have. If it doesn't work, we risk breaking up our entire family. It's too big of a price to pay." Her heart sank finally admitting it directly and out loud to someone.
"I understand but sometimes those are the kind of risks worth taking. You've both been through so much already. Even if you went back to hating each other, you'd make it work because that's what you do. You both value family more than anything, but don't suffer needlessly before finding out for yourselves."
The wetness coating Emma's cheeks was the first indication that she'd started crying. They were a mix of happy and nervous tears which she quickly wiped away sniffling. "Dad, I don't even know if she sees me that way."
David laughed hard shaking his head at his daughter's denseness. "Oh for heaven's sake, Emma, She definitely sees you that way! Regina may be a lot of things, but she's never been known for her subtlety!"
"So, it's not just me who think she's a raging flirt, then?"
"Absolutely not! Half the town were taking bets on when you'd get together back then. But she was only ever that flirty with you. It's quite painful to watch, to be honest. On one hand I want to run her through for acting like that with my daughter, on the other, I want to push you both into a room and lock the door until you work it out."
"Dad, stop..."
"I'm just being honest. I don't like seeing you suffer. If that means putting aside my fatherly pride, so be it." He held his hands up in surrender.
Her heartbeat was slowing down a little and a warmth spread over her chest as she started to feel more confident that she might not be rejected. "Do you really think we have a chance? I'm so unbelievably in love with her. When I see her with Hope it's...everything."
David walked around the other side of the desk, hugged her tight and buried his head in her hair. He was relieved that she'd finally admitted it and wanted to comfort and offer all the support she needed. "You have got more than a chance, my girl. If she doesn't love you then, my name isn't Prince Charming."

Despite the enlightening conversation with her father a few days prior, Emma still hadn't worked up the courage to talk to the woman.
They bumped into each other at the diner on Monday afternoon and Emma could barely say hello without stuttering over the words.
"How are you, Emma?"
"I'm good. I'm good. Are you... good?"
English failed her and she didn't know how to act suddenly afraid of blurting something out that could be misconstrued. She was now hyper aware of her inability to look at the woman without blushing or giving her a longing gaze, all thanks to her father's revelations.
Laughing at the lack of eloquence and sensing some nervousness, Regina replied. "I'm good, but, I really don't think you are... good!" It was endearing but she wanted Emma to loosen up and get over whatever this version was quickly.
"No, no, I am, totally good."
"Oh-kay. I didn't see you this weekend. What happened? I thought we had family time."
"I was, erm working on some... work." Her boots scuffed on the laminate floor and she knew she sounded ridiculous. She was so bashful and awkward and she hated it. She went to lean on the counter casually and missed it, stumbling sideways trying to regain her balance.
Regina started feeling worried and her brow furrowed. Something must have happened. "I didn't see your name on the rota. Are you sure you're alright, Emma?" The last question was in a hushed tone as she stepped closer and put a hand on her friend's arm which only caused her to become more jumpy.
"Yeah, I swapped with my David, I mean, my dad. He's my dad." She stuffed her hands in her back pockets and smiled like a mad woman.
"Yes, I know who your dad is, Emma! What the hell is wrong with you? Has Hope not been sleeping again?"
Shit. She had to look up realizing how bad she was making this. Regina must know how she felt, how could she not? They read each other so well so why was it suddenly so hard to talk to her?
'Just look at her, damnit!'
Big mistake as her core clenched being so close to the object of her desires. "No! I mean, maybe. She's an angel but I think I'm a bit tired or something. I'm gonna go. Okay? We'll talk soon. Bye!"
She turned quickly, exiting the diner as the blush broke out on her face. Anyone coming in at that specific moment would have seen the utter embarrassment on the savior's face as she muttered, "stupid, stupid, stupid, idiot," and practically ran back to the station empty-handed.
Ruby came over with Regina's order as they both stood staring perplexed at the door. "What was that about?"
"I have absolutely no idea." She took the bag and was about to leave but Ruby stopped her.
"Wait. If you're going after her, can you take her lunch?"
Regina sighed. "I'm not going after her. She, clearly doesn't want my company right now."
She left the diner in a poof of smoke and went straight to Zelena's making her jump up off the couch.
"Bloody hell! Ever heard of knocking?"
"Why would I knock? You never do. What have you said to Emma?"
"When?"
"I don't know. When is the last time you spoke to her or had one of your coffee breaks?"
Zelena batted her off. Clearly Regina was paranoid. "Not for weeks. Last time I saw her was with you. Why? What's wrong with her?"
"Ugh, I don't know."
Resigned, she sunk into the armchair and rubbed her temples. "She's distant and made it perfectly clear she doesn't want to be around me right now." It hurt, but she was kicking herself for starting to believe their conversation in the car had meant more than what was said explicitly.
"Why? What have you done?"
Huffing, "Nothing! I have done nothing. I'm as well-behaved and cavalier as ever." Slight lie, she thought as she remembered the little show she put on.
"She's been avoiding me since the carnival."
A knowing, "ah," filled the room and Zelena dropped onto the couch next to her. "Well, you weren't exactly cavalier or subtle that night. She's probably figured out you fancy her. Finally!"
Sulking, "Well, she started it with the double-entendre."
"Yes, but you carried it on."
A long silence ensued as Regina brooded over the fact this was most likely her doing. "There was... more. After. In the car. She basically told me she would do anything to protect the family we built together, even if it meant never having the things we want most. At the time, I thought she was possibly talking about us being together, but now I think she was subtly warning me off."
It played on her mind for the last week trying to read between the lines if it was what she heard or wishful thinking. Seeing her clearly uncomfortable and stuttering around her after more than a weeks worth of avoidance was painful to witness. Obviously Emma wasn't comfortable flirting with her now she figured out Regina was bisexual. Maybe the banter was only ever acceptable to Emma when she assumed they were both straight. She didn't fully believe that. Emma was definitely not a hundred percent straight. There was no fucking way and she was pretty sure Mal told her that Lily and Emma had a fling when they were teens. 'It's just me she's uncomfortable flirting with.'
"Oh, shit. Well, I told you not to start that off again, so I've got no sympathy. It's your own fault if you're suffering." Slapping her thighs as if the matter was settled, she changed the subject swiftly. "I've booked the flights, by the way. We leave on the fourteenth."
"Wait. It's Lucy's birthday on the fourteenth. You knew that!"
"Yes, we are leaving after. Plenty of time for a slice of cake then off we pop to Maine Airport."
She shook her head violently. "Zelena, we are not teleporting to the middle of Maine Airport! Do you want us to get killed? Besides, magic doesn't work over the town line the same way. It's too risky. Cancel it."
"I'm not stupid. I never said anything about teleporting. You're driving. The flight's not until midnight. Got us a red-eye. It was cheaper."
"Since when do you worry about money?"
Zelena rolled her eyes knowing she was caught out and wondering why she'd even bothered trying to lie to her sister who wouldn't judge at all. Force of habit.
"Alright, fine! I know the pilot. He's going to be off for two days when we land. Kelly promised him a tour of the facilities." A wicked grin broke out on her face and then it was Regina's turn to roll her eyes.
"Great! So it's a hook up. That'll be fun for me."
"Oh, come on! The whole point of this little adventure is to hook up. I'm just starting earlier. I plan to join the mile-high club, though technically, I'm already in it. Just haven't done it on an airplane. Broomstick, yes. Don't recommend it."
Regina was still thinking about the way Emma reacted in the diner and not paying much attention to her sister's waffling. Her phone found its way to her hand and she typed out a message to the savior.
R: If I have done something wrong, please tell me what so I can try to fix it.
She didn't like pushing it with Emma, but this was worrying her and she was frightened she might do something stupid. She hated that she'd made Emma uncomfortable with the flirting and scared her off. Her phone vibrated almost straight away.
E: Nothing to fix, promise. I'm just really tired lately. Hope you are okay. X
That kiss was new. Emma never put kisses on her messages. Emojis, yes. Kisses, never.
It caused her heart to thud questioning if that was something significant or not. Everything these last weeks was so confusing. She felt like she was on roller-coaster. One minute it seemed she was flirting back, the next she could barely look at her.
R: I am okay. Just worried about you. I'm only a message away if you need anything. X
She hit send and pocketed her phone not expecting a quick reply and wanted to get back to work so she could enjoy the silence. Zelena was still chattering as she stood up.
"Sorry, I've got to go. We'll talk about it another time." With a flurry, she poofed back to the office and spent the next twenty minutes of her break fretting over the kiss she sent back.

On Wednesday the family were scheduled for their mid-week dinner at Regina's and to discuss the last minute details of Lucy's birthday party. Emma messaged ten minutes before saying she couldn't make it and apologized. Regina lost it and quickly switched off the stove. Calling through to the guests in her lounge she made her excuses.
"Henry, I need to pop out. I forgot something at work. I'll be right back."
She poofed herself to Emma's front door and knocked angrily.
Emma opened it looking taken aback, her phone was still in her hand open on their messages. "Uh hi. What are you doing here?"
Eyebrow raised and hand on hip, "can I come in?"
Emma gulped looking over her shoulder and seeing the mess. She quickly waved a hand remembering she could do magic then turned back to the woman standing on her doorstep noticing the frown getting bigger.
"Sure, come in."
Regina took slow steps inside and looked around. She could feel Emma's magic in the air and knew she'd just performed some sort of cloaking spell. Waving her hand over it, it revealed what she'd covered up. A few toys, some shoes scattered on the floor, and one red leather jacket. She looked at Emma in utter confusion and annoyance.
"Why wouldn't you want me to see that? It wasn't even that bad."
Emma blushed. "I just, ahem, I'm not usually so messy."
"Emma, I remember vividly those early days with Henry. The house was chaos. This, this is nothing!" She waved her hand again and re-cloaked it seeing Emma looking so uncomfortable. "Why aren't you coming to dinner, again?"
"I'm not feeling great." It was the truth. She was barely sleeping and couldn't stomach solid food.
Regina pressed a palm to her forehead and shook her head. "Well, you don't seem to be running a fever. What symptoms do you have?"
Emma heart rate quickened with the contact and she fought to try and keep her breathing even. "I'm just not sleeping, and I'm not that hungry. If I came to dinner, it'd be a waste of food."
Where's Hope?" Regina asked looking around the quiet house.
"My mom just took her to yours." A bashful grin broke out on her face and she still couldn't look at her directly. "When she heard your name in the conversation, she wanted to see you."
Regina smiled fondly at first but it soon fell. "Well, at least one of you wants to see me." With a sigh she dropped her own eyes to the floor.
"Look, I know you are avoiding me but you don't need to. It's just a family dinner, nothing more. And we need to work out the last details for Lucy's birthday party. You better still be coming."
Emma's face scrunched up having forgotten about the party and the fact she'd said she'd sort out the music. "Yeah, I'm coming. Of course I am."
"Good. I'm not going to force you to come for dinner now, but you need to get past this, please. You were the one who said you'd do anything for the family, so do it. Whatever it is."
She turned to leave not happy with the fact she'd snapped at the woman, but her heart was breaking all over again. They couldn't do normal if Emma was going to freak out and think she was hitting on her every time they were together. She needed to pull herself together.
"Regina, you don't understand."
Facing her again she was still annoyed. "No, you're right. I don't understand. I don't understand a thing because you aren't talking. When you find your voice, let me know." She opened the door and just as it was closing she heard Emma whisper.
"I don't know how to start."
Regina froze mid-step and her shoulders dropped. Without turning back and in a low defeated tone she spoke. "You start by behaving around me the way you always have." In a flash of purple, she was gone leaving Emma to settle the words in her mind.
She quietly closed the door and went straight to her bedroom for a lie down feeling the weight in her limbs. Regina was right. She needed to pull herself together or get on with it. Either way, she was losing their friendship and making things worse.

Work got surprisingly busy for the rest of the week and Emma was called out to make five arrests. It was silly things like shoplifting and vandalism, but it meant she got to see other parts of the town she rarely set foot in.
On Thursday evening just as she was about to leave and call it a weekend, she got a call reporting an incident over on the edge of the forest. She took the patrol car and headed off to see what the commotion was.
It was mayhem. Two groups of hunters were at a stand off with bows and arrows pointing at each other. Her puny little gun didn't feel very comforting in her holster.
"Alright, what seems to be the problem here?" Her voice directed at the apparent leader of the group.
"They're hunting our game. This is our spot, we've been here longer." It was Little John Emma now recognized.
"Let's all put the weapons down and talk civilly. I'm sure we can come to an arrangement over who gets to hunt where."
Nobody did as she asked so she pulled her gun. "I said, lower your weapons!"
The original residents obliged knowing all too well the damage a gun could do and seeing their response, the new immigrants from the Enchanted Forest lowered theirs also. "We aren't hunting game. We are looking for our comrade, Much. If you'd let us finish talking, you would know we were not threatening you."
One of the merry men took off his mask and peered ahead. "Arthur, is that you? I thought you were dead! It's alright lads. He's one of ours from way back!"
Emma sighed in relief as the two groups began mingling and celebrating. Apparently they all knew each other and got separated in the first curse. She holstered her gun, satisfied there would be no casualties tonight. "Alright guys. Keep it down. If I get any more complaints tonight I'm gonna be super pissed. I think I'm done here."
"Hold up, Emma. Come and have a drink with us. Our mates have got a few stories you'd love to hear about back in the day." John asked hoping to keep the sheriff sweet and off his back.
"Some other time, maybe." She was walking back to the patrol car but he called out again.
"Just one, Emma. Please? I feel terrible you've had to come all the way down here for nothing."
"Alright. One drink. I'm technically off duty now anyway."

It was a little after one in the morning when Regina got a worrying call from David saying Emma had gone off on a job and hadn't come back.
"Where was she headed?"
She cradled the phone between her shoulder and ear already reaching for her purse where she kept various emergency items she could track the woman with if needed.
"What time was that?" Popping the locket open, she pulled out a strand of golden hair as David continued.
"Okay, I'm on my way. I'll call you as soon as I get reception."
Hurriedly clicking off the phone call, she ran to the home study and grabbed the plan of the forest and surrounding areas then performed a quick locator spell with her hands shaking. It took a few moments for the path to be revealed but it worked. She sighed in relief. She was still alive at least.
In a puff she was at the edge of the forest with her map in hand and phone in her pocket. When the smoke cleared, she saw the patrol car haphazardly parked up, unlocked, and it seemed there was no immediate sign of struggle. That was a small relief but not comforting considering how deep into the forest the dot was glowing. She followed the trail on foot with a fireball in hand lighting the way.
She hadn't done anything like this for a long time and her heart was in her throat. Maybe coming alone wasn't the best idea, but she reminded herself she had very powerful magic and could transport out of there in an instant.
Owls hooted overhead and the forest rustled with signs of predators lurking in the shadows so she made the fireball bigger and picked up the pace. She wasn't dressed for the terrain and hadn't thought to do anything about it until already well into the journey. Poofing into an unknown location with that many trees, possible villains or kidnappers, and no clue what was going on was too dangerous. Her navigation skills were a little rusty after so long living a fairly sedentary lifestyle. What had Emma been thinking coming out here alone?
Regina did meticulous background checks on any new residents moving into Storybrook, but nobody was ever completely safe in this town. There were still plenty of people in both the old world and the new who wished to harm them. It hadn't been that long ago that she herself was cursed. The Evil Queen falling prey to someone else's version of the thing she started. Emma had made some enemies as both the dark-one and the savior. People like them, powerful magic-wielding women, didn't get a break and certainly couldn't become complacent.
They had become complacent these last two and a half years. Life seemed good. Relaxed even, and that was a dangerous mentality.
As she walked, she realized she didn't miss this fear, panic and worry that churned her stomach. She didn't miss these rescue missions and adventures. Not one bit. They might have laughed about the details over the last few months, having distance between themselves and past events, but they weren't ever entertaining and she wished they could all just catch a break. She'd already lived so many lifetimes, more than should be humanly possible, and she'd seen enough adventures that she was certain if reincarnation was a thing, she would not have to come back again. Regina was tired and ready for retirement. She was ready to start aging out with grace and settle down for her final years. She did not want to keep chasing people around dank forests. Regina hated forests.
Soon she saw a fire glowing in the distance and her heart battered like a drum against her ribcage. From this far she couldn't tell if they were friend or foe.
As she got cautiously closer, she heard music playing and lots of laughter.
Extinguishing the fireball, she stepped out into the middle of the merry men's camp feeling a mix of nostalgia, sadness and anger.
Her eyes scanned everyone's faces until they fell on Emma who was currently laughing obnoxiously at a table with six other people. She stormed over feeling every inch her former self.
"What the hell were you thinking?"
The people at the table all bowed their heads in reverence to the queen but Emma looked up and smiled excitedly. "R'gnaaaa! I didn't know you were here! When did ya get here?"
"Un-be-lievable!"
Seeing Emma drunk and completely oblivious to the fact she'd worried her and David needlessly, plus having just spent the last half an hour traipsing through a dark forest in yoga pants and flip-flops was making her furious. She hadn't been this angry in years and once again, it was because of Emma Swan.
"Can we get my queen a beer? She needs a beer." Emma was gesticulating and waving her hands around trying to get someone's attention. As Regina got within grabbing distance, Emma slung an arm around her waist and pulled her closer. "Hey, missed you!"
"I can't believe you. Get up. We're leaving." She went to pull her off the bench and realized she was very unsteady on her feet.
"I love you. Sssso muchhh. Like sexy lvvv you!"
The drunken slurred words did not help in subsiding her annoyance and she tried to steady the blonde to a fairly upright position before attempting to teleport.
"You are drunk."
"Sssooo arrr you!" She snorted and laughed trying to act flirty and press a finger to Regina's nose, but she missed and poked her in the cheek, earning herself another death glare.
"I certainly am not. I was in bed. Do you have any idea how worried your father was?" That's it. Focus on her father's worry and not her own.
Emma looked confused and tried to focus on one of the Regina's currently in her vision as there seemed to be three.
"Why wozii worried? I told him I was here. With John, and... sssomeone, I don't r-member who, but... I do know I was... here."
She couldn't stop giggling now able to focus on one of the Regina's if she held on to her shoulders. She tried to flutter her eyelashes but it just came off as drunken squinting. "You got out of bed for me?"
Regina sighed and got short with her words. She needed her to sober up at least a little before attempting to move her magically. Not that she particularly felt like rescuing the woman now she saw she was just drunk and in no danger.
"Yes, I did. So can we please get going so I can return to it."
Emma's eyes darkened a little and she leaned in closer. Regina could smell the alcohol on her breath as she attempted a sultry whisper, "You gonna take me to your bed? Cos, for the record, I'd like that. A lot."
She was swaying and Regina had to pull back a little to avoid a sloppy kiss. Her heat raced with the uncensored and unguarded words but hell if she was going to let them affect her.
"Emma... this is not the time, nor the place. I am angry at you right now so do not push me."
She untangled herself from the savior's grasp and started out of the camp into the forest. A bit of walking would do them both some good.
Emma followed hot on her heels. "Why are you angry?"
"Because you left the station seven hours ago to resolve a conflict and didn't check in! Your phone doesn't get reception this far out, as you well know. You have me and David running around worried sick thinking the worst, and then I traipse though the forest for half and hour only to find you drunk off your face with the merry men, of all people!"
It was useless explaining any of this as she likely wouldn't remember tomorrow as she rarely did in these states. But she needed to rant and began pacing faster.
"You have barely spoken a word to me in weeks since the carnival. You start looking like the Emma I used to know and then you shut down just when I think we're getting somewhere. You tell me you would do anything to protect this family, then you treat me like I'm nothing."
Her anger flared and the fireball lighting the way in her palm doubled in size, the flames danced in her eyes as she turned to shout at the blonde behind her.
"Now you love me? Now you want me to take you to my bed!? Now you're drunk enough. Not good enough, Swan. I'm done with this. That is why I'm so fucking angry at you, to answer your ridiculous question."
She dropped onto the nearest log in a frustrated huff and made a drink appear in her hand. She needed it after letting all that out. She shouldn't have said anything but the adrenaline had bubbled to the surface and she felt raw. The relief of seeing Emma alive was short lived and quickly replaced by annoyance. Years of frustration and back and forth between them hit her in one massive blow. Knocking back the whisky on ice and grimacing as it hit her throat with a burn she looked back over to where Emma was swaying.
"I'm so sssorry. Imma get my sshit togeth..."
Before she could finish, she was hurling up the liquid she'd been drinking all night and Regina averted her gaze until she finished. 'Good. Serves you right,' Regina thought to herself relishing a little in the alcohol getting revenge on its drinker. It was a few minutes before everything came out and Regina sat patiently waiting until she was quite certain she was done.
Emma started drunk weeping as she wiped her mouth. "I'm so embarrassed. You hate me now."
"For God's sake, I don't hate you. Pull yourself together, Swan. Now, we are leaving."
Taking a few cautious steps toward her, she placed a hand on her shoulder and poofed them to Emma's porch.
"Go freshen yourself up. Then bed, got it?" She was using her stern mother voice and Emma nodded through sniffles and hiccups. "Good night," she said with a finality to it that started Emma off sobbing again.
"I don't *hic want you to *hic go."
Uncomfortably she cleared her throat and firmly repeated her previous sentence. "Freshen up then bed. Good night." She wasn't doing this now.
In a poof she was home and the adrenaline wore off leaving her shaky once again. Emma Swan was a God damn nightmare! Remembering suddenly she hadn't let David and Snow know, she grabbed her phone and dialled hoping the noise wouldn't wake Hope or Neal.
"It's me. Yes, she's home." She rubbed her temples feeling her first stress induced migraine coming on in years as she waited. "Well I wouldn't say she's okay, but she isn't in any danger. I'll let her explain herself tomorrow. Goodnight David."
Hanging up with a sigh, she made her way to her own bed ready to curl up in a ball and never leave it again. Emma Swan had some explaining, and some serious, next-level wooing to do if she was going to make up for that outburst.
After everything they'd been through, all the curses, portals, deaths, and everything else, did the woman really need to be drunk to admit to having feelings for her? How dare she! They were family. They were friends. They talked their shit through like the responsible magical adults they both were. They owned their dark actions and impulses and did not need to dress things up with excuses like being too drunk to remember. She didn't want a drunk Emma's declarations and advances.
Despite her annoyance she couldn't help the smile tugging at her lips as she recalled Emma's words. At least it made sense now why she was avoiding her and acting awkward. She should have called it before because she could now vividly remember how Emma got all flustered and stuttered around Hook right back when they started.
It should have been obvious but she'd somehow forgotten how much of a dork Emma was when dating. She cackled in villain style as she sung to herself, "What shall I do with the drunken savior early in the morning." Now she had all the confirmation she needed, oh boy was she going to enjoy every second of watching her Swan bumble and swoon.
#
Emma woke up cursing her alarm for disturbing her and with yet another hangover. She needed water desperately and plodded to the kitchen to pour a glass and pop a couple of aspirin. Her body ached and her throat burned. She must have been sick at some point but she couldn't remember a thing after the merry men's home brew.
She gagged and shuddered just thinking about alcohol and decided that she was never drinking ale again. As she was putting some bread in the toaster a loud banging on her front door made her jump. Groaning and plodding to door she realized she wouldn't have the luxury of hanging on the couch for the day. When she opened it, her dad looked her up and down and frowned.
"Ah, I see. That explains it."
"What?"
He followed her in and closed the door behind himself fuming. "You didn't come back. You didn't call. Emma, you know that can't happen."
"No, I know. You're right. I'm really sorry. I didn't mean for it to happen. I had two beers then I can't remember a thing after that. Little John wanted me to stay as a thank you for resolving the conflict. I don't even know how I got home." She slumped against the breakfast bar and started buttering her toast.
"I had to call Regina to find you with a locator spell. Honestly, you are pretty lucky to be alive right now. She was not happy and neither am I."
"Regina brought me home?"
"Mmm-hmm."
"Oh, shit... I'm gonna have to go and apologize to her."
"Yeah, you do that AFTER you've recovered the patrol car. Can I trust you to not get drunk again and disappear in the process?"
She nodded. "Yup, absolutely. Never drinking again. I'll just get showered and head over there. I'll have it back to the station before lunch."
"Hmmm. Alright. Hope's ready to come home and your mom needs you to have Neal for a couple of hours. She's gotta run a few errands."
"No worries. I'll go straight there from the station."
When he was happy everything was all in order, he left Emma to sort herself out and face the long day she now had to battle thanks to her drunken adventures in the forest. She groaned again realizing Regina was likely going to be extra annoyed at the company she kept last night. There was also a highly likely chance that she'd embarrassed herself in front of the woman and probably said something stupid like always. With a sigh, she headed for the shower and started operation clean up.
Half an hour later, she was back in the patrol car returning it to the station and David didn't comment about the uncharacteristic sunglasses she was wearing.
By the time she got to her parents house, she was feeling a little more with it but was desperate for more coffee.
"You look like death, Emma," Snow commented whilst handing Hope to her.
"Thanks mom, love you too." Neal took her free hand and she started buckling them both into the back of the bug. "What time do you want him back?"
"I should be done by six but I might go for a drink or two with Ruby. I should be home before one though. you know, like a responsible mother." Her arms were folded over her chest and she wore an eerily similar expression to the ones she was used to seeing on Regina when she was pissed.
"I'm really sorry about last night. It won't happen again. I promise."
"I don't mind having her stay over, Emma, but you need to check in. It better not happen again. You can drop him off at seven, okay?"
"Got it, see you later."
With the two kids chattering and screeching loudly in the back, she drove off to the diner to stock up on all the sugary treats she would need to get through the day. As she was unbuckling Hope, Neal was hitting her with a plush Hulk toy and making all the smash sounds that went along with such an action. Hope was throwing a tantrum because she didn't want to get out the car, and Regina watched smirking from the window.
It was a surprise to see her at all today. She imagined she'd spend most of it asleep but figured this was David and Snow's punishment for making them worry all night and she had to admit, it was a good one. She straightened her face as the woman and the two rowdy kids came inside.
"I'm gonna need a caramel cappuccino, double shot, six bear claws, four Boston cremes, two juice boxes, a grilled cheese, and two kiddy meals to go, please." She reeled off her order not even caring how high Ruby's eyebrows were rising knowing that it was pretty much all for her.
"Shall I throw in a couple of aspirin to go with that?" She did not need wolf senses to know a hangover when she saw one.
"Can't hurt." They shared a little chuckle before Ruby went off to put the order through. Emma flopped into the nearest seat to wait and tried her best to keep the kids entertained.
Regina came over looking like Madam Mayor ready to rip her a new one and Emma grimaced.
"So, last night was.. interesting."
"I'm really sorry. If it's any consolation, believe me, I'm paying for it today."
It seemed as though her suspicions were correct and Emma didn't remember the details very well, if at all. She actually seemed more herself than ever. "Did you have fun?" There was a glint in her eye and she thought she'd like to mess with her a little.
Emma didn't catch it as her eyes were on Neal making sure he didn't run off. "Honestly, I don't even remember. I'm such a light weight. Neal, please just sit down five more minutes okay?" She was distracted and clearly struggling. "My dad said you came to my rescue, so thank you and sorry if I was a mess."
Regina shook her head. "The merry men, dear? After everything we've been through?"
"They wanted to thank me for breaking up the fight. It wasn't intentional."
"You really don't remember anything, do you?"
Emma finally caught her gaze and saw that smug look on the brunette's face. The one she used to get when she knew something someone else didn't. Grimacing, "did I say something weird, coz if I did, I apologize."
Leaning in slightly menacingly, yet still managing to be seductive, she whispered in the savior's ear, conscious of the wolves with excellent hearing close by. The words tickled Emma's ear as she spoke and Regina reveled in the goosebumps it caused. "You said a lot to, uhm, I think the term you used was, 'my queen'." A low rumble of amusement resonated as she straightened up and watched Emma's cheeks turn pink.
Trying to think of a way out, she realized there might not be one and maybe it was better to do as Regina had said before: Treat her as always. "Well, you are a queen, and you are technically my queen."
"Technically, so, as your queen, I request that you stop messing around or risk falling out of favor."
"Got it, your majesty."
"Hmm, not yet you don't." She couldn't resist adding a subtle wink to the words before exiting the diner with a slight wiggle, leaving Emma to mull that one over. It took a while for her addled brain to make sense of it, but when she did, it hit her like a freight train causing the largest grin and redness to spread over her face.
Ruby came over with the order in two large paper bags grinning at seeing the improvement in her mood. "Got everything you wanted?"
"Not yet, but almost, I think." She didn't care at this point if Ruby knew what she was talking about, but she imagined she did as it was most likely her that started the bet in the first place and there was no way she could hide the smile right now or who the cause of it was.
"Well, I really hope you get it soon. Welcome back to the team."
#
Later that evening once Hope was asleep and Neal was back safely with her parents, she decided to message Regina.
E: I think my queen is playing with me but I'm not sure. X
She had a few fuzzy memories from last night return to her during the day and she could have sworn she remembered hearing Regina say something along the lines of being too drunk to bed her, but she could be wrong. It was very fuzzy.
R: If I were playing with you, there would be no room for doubt as to what was happening. X
Emma stared at the message getting the strong impression it was implying something of a sexual nature.
E: I'm starting to think you would like to be doing that with me. In fact, I think you wouldn't mind if I did it back...
It was a few moments before the reply came causing Emma to get antsy.
R: Are you really only just starting to think that? It shouldn't surprise me... Maybe I wouldn't mind. Maybe I'd like it, but you'd have to try it to know for certain. Preferably not drunk off your face and vomiting.
Emma read the message and whimpered. Okay, so she'd definitely put the moves on the woman at some point last night and the fact she'd thrown up and the woman was still willing to entertain her gave her the resolve to go full in.
E: My queen deserves better. Let me start over, please?
R: You already have. X
Over at the mansion Regina read back through their exchange smiling over the fact it had taken her so long to figure things out, but she got there in the end. Maybe now things were clear, she'd get a chance to show just how much she didn't mind toying with the woman. Tomorrow couldn't come soon enough.

It was Lucy's big party on Saturday and the entire family, plus a few friends from school were at the Author's old mansion. It was rarely used other than by Henry on occasion, and it also had a fabulous ballroom just going to waste.
Regina and Henry got there early in the morning to blow up balloons and decorate. This was going to be Lucy's first birthday in Storybrook and her dad wanted to make it memorable. There was an air of nostalgia as they worked in tandem and Regina relished having her son all to herself for a few hours. It was very rare they got to spend time together other than for meals and she even found herself dragging it out by not using her magic.
"I can't believe you were Lucy's age the first time we came here. You were so young for all that responsibility and I hated it."
"Yeah, it's pretty crazy thinking back on it now. I don't think I'd handle it if that happened to my baby girl."
Regina ruffled his hair as if he were that little boy again. "Now you know why Emma and I were so protective of you!"
"Yes, I do! It's not easy and actually, I think you two had a much harder time with me than I do with her. I was not an easy kid!"
Regina laughed shaking her head. "No, you really weren't! But you turned out great and I wouldn't change anything about you. In the end, me and your Ma did alright."
Henry smiled and started hanging more pink balloons. "You've never called her Ma before."
"No, I don't think I have." She couldn't stop smiling as she thought about Emma again and her son noticed the hint of color in her cheeks. it was only slight but it was definitely there.
"She's doing better, isn't she?"
"She's getting there. I think she sometimes forgets she has all of us and only needs to ask if she needs an extra hand."
Henry chuckled. "That was in bad taste."
"Yet, you laughed." She smiled but felt guilty for accidently referencing Hook. it hadn't been intentional. Her son was as much a product of nurture as nature. She inflated another balloon and tied the knot before handing it over.
"So, I know we talked a lot before when we were in the Enchanted Forest, but things are different now." He knew he was pushing it but that was kind of his signature move anyhow.
Regina groaned in warning. She didn't regret telling him she was once in love with Emma, but it was a lot easier to talk about when they were in completely different realms, and she'd already come to terms with the fact they'd likely never see each other again. "You better not be getting any operation ideas."
"I promise, I'm not. I just want you to be happy. Both of you."
"Thank you." She blew up another balloon hoping he'd drop it.
"So...?"
She rolled her eyes and threw the balloon at him. "You're right. Things are different."
In a good way or...?"
"Maybe. Let her figure things out in her own time."
For the next few minutes they both continued silently filling more balloons and then started on hanging banners. Snow arrived with a tonne of glitter and shiny things for the candy table, shortly followed by Jacinda and Tiana who brought most of the food. Everyone's mouth started watering as the smell of beignet's, pralines, and jambalaya found its way to their noses.
The final items were added and noticing the time, Regina finished it all off with a touch of magic fairy lights, some music, and a dance floor that lit up when your walked on it.
"She's gonna love it," Henry said and put an arm around his mom.
"Let's hope so. I'm going to go home and get changed. I won't be long."
She poofed away looking forward to a nice shower to get rid of the dusty stuff off her fingers from the balloons. She considered her outfits and decided to go traditional but not too formal. Just a simple yet elegant black velvet dress with long sleeves.
She reached for her first ever tiara, a gift from her father, and suddenly changed her mind having second thoughts about giving it to Lucy. It was a family heirloom and as much as she wanted her to have it, her father's words echoed in her mind.
'One day, you shall gift this to your daughter and make her a princess.'
Years ago, she planned to give it to Robyn knowing she'd never have a daughter of her own, but she really didn't turn out to be the tiara type. When Henry had Lucy, there was no question in her mind that she would be the one to inherit it. But now, there was another little girl playing heavily on her heart and mind.
She heard a squeaky little voice in her head saying, "Mommy Gina pretty," and her heart exploded. With a shuddered breath and a trembling bottom lip, she wrapped it in its protective layers and pushed it back into her closet. It wouldn't hurt to wait another year. Traditions were all out of whack these days and she was probably the only one other than Snow that still remembered some of the old ways.
By the time she returned to the Author's place, the majority of guests had arrived and were waiting for Lucy. She spotted Emma rushing off out into the corridor looking upset and she followed her.
"Everything okay... oh!" The smell hit before the vision did. Hope had a little accident and Emma was rummaging in her bag for a change of outfit.
"Hey, sorry. She's been doing really well for the last two months but now and then, it happens."
Regina chuckled and went to lend a hand. "Let me help."
"Regina, you really don't have to!"
"But I want to. Is it weird that I actually miss doing this?" She expertly got the job done in half the time it would have taken Emma, then she magically summoned a cute little outfit she'd bought as gift to her but not had chance to give to her yet: A soft yellow dress with tiny daisy motifs dotting the skirt, and a tiny faux fur shrug in a lighter shade. Emma was still rummaging in the bag on the floor and hadn't seen yet.
"Yeah, that's kinda weird. Believe me, when you're doing it every day, the novelty wears off." As she stood up holding the recovered item, she noticed the outfit laid out next to Hope and she melted. "That is so beautiful!"
"May I?" She smiled when Emma nodded, suddenly timid under her observation. Slowly she took the greatest of care to dress the little girl all the while feeling eyes on her. When she was done, she took in the sight filled with love in her heart. "You look beautiful, Hope." She lifted her back off the table and the little girl eagerly raced back to find her big brother in the party leaving the women alone.
Emma went to bag the soiled outfit but Regina got their first and poofed it away.
"All done." She felt so lightheaded with the way Emma was looking at her in utter adoration at that moment and she almost forgot to breathe.
"You're amazing. With her, I uh, really appreciate everything you do for us." Her mouth was dry and she knew her words were a bit breathless but she needed to say it.
Regina kept looking at Emma's lips, unconsciously wetting her own. "Thank you. That means a lot to hear. I meant to give her that a few weeks ago. I'm glad it still fits."
Emma's eyes kept flitting between lips and eyes. This should not have been a romantic moment at all. It was ridiculously embarrassing how wet for the queen of diapers she was at this moment. "It's beautiful." 'God, Regina, you're beau...,' she inhaled about to say it when Henry called out to them clutching Hope's hand.
"Mom, Ma, Lucy's just out front. Everybody in places." He noticed their proximity and internally swore to himself for still having the absolute worse timing. All these years, all the missed moments and he remembered interrupting way more than he should have.
"Mommy Gina let go!"
They all laughed and Henry added for both their benefits, "Yeah, Hope I agree. Mom's, it's time so, let go." With a knowing smirk he headed back inside and Regina and Emma scowled after him but still wore smiles they could barely contain.
"Our kids are so bossy," Emma chuckled realizing a little too late how it could have sounded.
Regina's grin widened and she shot her a side glance as they slowly walked back inside. "I wonder who they get that from?"
Emma didn't even respond as she closed the door behind them. The room darkened and hushed up ready to surprise their granddaughter. In the dark, they couldn't see a thing but for approximately five seconds, Emma felt a gentle hand stroking the small or her back and heard a long, content sigh. If she could hear that, then there was no doubt Regina heard her shocked intake of breath.
The door on the opposite side of the room opened and two figures appeared which was their cue. Regina waved her hand and magically reactivated all the lights and music again as they all shouted, "surprise!" Just as quickly as the hand had been placed there, it was removed and Emma missed it immediately.
Lucy was overwhelmed and one by one, Jacinda led her to everyone to thank them individually. When she got to her grandparents, her eyes sparkled.
"Thank you so much grandma's! I love you both so much!"
"And we love you. Happy birthday, Lucy." Regina seemed to speak for both of them and it felt natural to Emma.
"Happy birthday, beautiful. Love you loads." Emma added feeling like she had thirteen years of making up to do, longer than she had with her son. It was like dejavu.
Lucy continued. "I have the coolest grandma's in the world! Let me guess, grandma Gina did the lights and dance floor?"
"Correct, but I blew up a lot of balloons too!"
"Really? With your mouth? Like normal people?"
The all laughed. "Yes, with my mouth!" She couldn't help glance at Emma and add, "I do a lot of things like normal people using regular methidd." She smirked seeing it had the desired effect and turned her attention back to Lucy.
"Cool. And grandma Emma picked the music?"
"Of course! I do have the best taste."
"Thanks so much! I love you guys!" Then she disappeared off to thank the others.
Regina's eyes darkened turning to Emma and giving her the look that Emma would later come to describe as indecent for a children's birthday party. "So, you have the best taste, do you?"
"Apparently so." She gave an eyebrow wiggle that told Regina it was her move.
"What if I disagree. What if I've been told mine is the best taste?"
The fine downy hairs on the back of Emma's neck and all down her back stood to attention knowing this was game on, green light, come for me bitch, level seduction and they absolutely weren't talking about music. "Then I suggest we find out for ourselves, or take each other's word for it."
Regina stepped a little closer sucking her bottom lip and humming in agreement. "I'm open to trying something new."
Emma stepped closer by a few inches and they were now in the level of personal space they hadn't been in this intensely since the carnival. It brought back flashes to both of them from when they were fighting and the chemistry that was always there, just bubbling under the surface to either love or fight.
"So am I. In fact, I'm really looking forward to it."
Regina's chest was rising and falling rapidly and her eyes flitted to the back door. She was going to burst if they didn't kiss now. It was undeniable but she wasn't going to embarrass their granddaughter on her birthday but she wasn't above baiting or calling her bluff. "I'll believe it when I see it."
It felt like time had stopped moving and Emma questioned if she was projecting for a second. Her eyes also flitted to the back door, then to Regina's whose lower lids squinted daring Emma to make the move.
She pulled in a long chug of air filling her lungs, then pursed her lips before surprising herself and the queen by pulling the door open and walking through it.
Regina gave herself a few beats to relish the moment of conquest she'd anticipated for longer than she dare admit. Schooling her features and casting a cautionary glance around to assure nobody was watching, she slipped out of the party and discreetly closed the door behind her. Emma was bumbling and second guessing the situation. "Regina, are you sure we are on the same page here coz you're kinda intense and.."
"Emma, I did not come out to talk."
"Good. Neither did I." Without overthinking it, Emma bound into the queen knocking the air from her lungs as their lips finally met. Regina's ass was against the door from the force and she smirked into the kiss that was well overdue.
Someone rattled the door handle trying to get out. Whoever it was would have to wait and she magically locked it allowing them to have this moment in relative peace.
Both gasped for air and pushed apart, just holding the other gently but firmly by the cheeks and neck. Emma moved in for a second time, a little softer and Regina matched her pace perfectly. A hint of tongue smoothly and methodically explored the inner realms of the queen's mouth and they both groaned as the action was returned. Regina's fists balled in the fabric of Emma's dress pulling her closer until she was flush against the brunette's body. Breathless again, Emma steadied her forehead against Regina's and they slowly came out of their lusty kiss, smiling and opening their eyes.
Regina really hadn't expected this tonight she was almost disappointed that she wasn't going to witness more of the savior nervously wondering if there was more between their lines. Almost.
Another bang on the door and they both laughed lightly knowing this was the only exit to the bathrooms but neither was quite ready to move just yet. Regina brought her hands back up to Emma's cheeks and pulled her forward for one last kiss knowing they had to return to the party and it couldn't go any farther right this moment.
When they broke apart, Regina pushed her toward the bathroom. "Wait in there for a few minutes. I'll go out first."
Emma nodded but couldn't resist leaning in to steal another chaste but lingering kiss from the woman. "Okay, I'm going now." Another kiss made Regina chuckled darkly, satisfied Emma craved and desired her as much as she did the blonde.
Her heart and body was alight as she watched her disappear into the ladies room then her eyes rolled back in her skull savoring the feeling and burning it into her memory as one of the best ones.
More banging on the door and she pulled herself together, flicking her magic and pulling it open with a theatrical frown. "I don't know what happened. The door must have jammed. I think I fixed it."
She walked back into the party as if her world hadn't just been completely rocked off its hinges and calmly went to find herself a drink. She stood back just watching their family and friends enjoying themselves, then she spotted Emma returning to the room.
She was having a harder time acting unaffected, but then again, Regina had a longer time to practice. Her eyes followed the woman of her dreams across the room where she grabbed her daughter's hands and started dancing around making the floor light up pink and purple beneath their feet. Shit, maybe she wasn't as well versed in acting unaffected when it came to both of them together.
Zelena sidled up to her. "Caught you. Put your tongue back in."
"Leave me alone. I'm enjoying myself."
"Really? Because it looks like pining from where I'm standing."
"Not pining."
Emma looked over from the dance floor beaming at Regina like she was the only person that existed in the entire room and Regina felt like she was kissing her all over again. She sent a very subtle wink causing Emma to bite her bottom lip to try and control her bashful smile.
Zelena's face fell in shock. "You sneaky cow! It's finally happened, hasn't it?"
"What are you babbling about now, dear?"
Zelena shook her head laughing in glee. She was quite honestly impressed. "I didn't think she had it in her. Good for her. Good for you!"
A small satisfied smirk found its way to her lips and she shrugged nonchalantly. "Its early days. Fragile. It was just a kiss."
"Way to go, Swan! Shame she won't see you for a week."
Regina's shoulders slumped remembering they were supposed to go away in a few hours. "I won't be coming to Hawaii with you."
"Regina! Don't you dare cancel on me! I've been looking forward to this for ages!"
"You can still go. Take my car if you want. Just bring it back in one piece."
"I cant go on my own. How desperate is that?!"
"Oh please! You planned to desert me before we even got off the plane. Go. Enjoy the pilot."
She huffed and sulked a bit more. "The only reason I arranged this was to take your mind off her."
"Well, I don't want to take my mind off her, nor my eyes. Hmm, nor my mouth."
Emma was looking over again and she tilted her head as if to invite her to join them on the dancefloor. She smiled and nodded. One dance together with the secret would be delicious. She began walking toward her future leaving Zelena sulking.
"Well, sod you then! I'll give your ticket to Ruby. She's more fun anyway!" She wasn't too annoyed to be honest. She wanted her sister to get what she wanted and if Emma was finally going to give it to her, then she wouldn't get in the way. Besides, she'd never driven the Benz. Smiling with the thought, she poofed Regina's car keys out of her purse and disappeared out of the party.
Regina didn't hear a word as her focus became Emma and Hope dancing with her. They both held each of the little girls' hands, not touching and only stealing well guarded glances at each other whilst swaying to the music. It wasn't long before Lucy, Henry, Robyn and Alice joined them, shortly followed by everybody else. At some point the music switched to something slow and all the couples paired off. They stayed as a trio, spinning and dipping Hope who giggled the entire song.
By the end of the night the cake was cut and everyone was in high spirits. Regina took a seat next to Emma discreetly as she ate her cake and shoulder bumped her earning one back. They didn't need to talk. This was them. This was how they fit and they both knew it now. Robyn caught her eye and smiled fondly at her aunty, recognizing the bloom of something new between them. Breathing deeply, Regina smiled. "I hope you will save some room for family dinner tomorrow."
"You know me. Always have room for your food."
"Good. You know, it's quite late. You and Hope could stay over my place tonight and we'll all be there together in the morning. For family time."
Emma looked up to see Regina taking a very large interest in her fingernails and unable to meet her eye. She gulped. "I think that sounds perfect."
She stopped looking at her hands and smiled broadly. "Good. You can drive. Zelena took my car."
