Lemon

He watched, arms crossed over his plated chest, leaning in the doorway that led to her kitchen. The weight of his body pressed the skin of his upper arm into the wooden molding: marks sure to form and be visible as soon as he moved. His intent had been to grab a bag of chips, but seeing her at work he'd stalled his mission just to observe her. She had a knife in hand, the blade slowly but purposely slicing through the yellow fruit on her cutting board. Beside her was a pitcher that already had some of the sliced fruit inside it.

She sniffled, the cold she'd been fighting all week still lingering as she put her knife down to adjust her glasses and pull stray blonde hairs that had escaped her ponytail behind her ear. She scooped up the lemons and tossed them in the pitcher before giving the whole thing a stir, the ice inside the glass container clinking as she did so.

She put the spoon down and looked up at him, brown eyes sparkling as she canted her head to the side and stared at him curiously. She had known he'd been there. For some reason, he could never sneak up on her. His brothers could, her startled screams more than a little funny followed by the whap of her hand against their shells. Raph once said it was because he stunk, and that she could smell him coming. He'd started taking two showers a day after that for a while, and still... She knew. She always knew.

"Hey!" she greeted finally, pulling up the sleeves of her plain, grey sweatshirt. "Want some homemade lemon-aide?"

"Sure." Chips forgotten, he found an abandoned bar stool and pulled it up to the counter, sliding onto it easily. "Looks good."

"My grandmother taught me before she passed away," she said, taking down two glasses and filling them. "Normally I let the lemons set in the water a while before drinking it but I can't wait."

She poured a generous amount in their glasses, putting the glass pitcher in the fridge before raising her glass to her lips and taking a sip. Her eyes fluttered closed and he watched as she hummed her pleasure. Her lips released the glass and she licked them before opening her eyes, smiling brightly.

"So good."

"Yeah?" His overly large hand encircled the glass and he tried it. It was good, and he knew once the lemons flavored it more it would be incredible. "Mmm yeah, very good."

"How about we go watch that show now, huh?" she asked, taking her glass with her.

"Yeah, sure," he said, reluctantly leaving the kitchen where they had been alone, where he had her to himself to enjoy her company: to rejoin his brothers and April in the living room.
