Chapter 23
Sophie did not appreciate being interrupted in the middle of her interrogation of Josh Brandt, but Supergirl promised to keep him company. Surprisingly, once they got to Crow Headquarters, Josh had become talkative, and Kara wondered if that was because she was there. Her outward appearance may not be all that intimidating to hardened criminals or aliens, but her powers were a different story.
"Josh, you need to come clean. Why did your mom deserve that today?" Kara tried to press on without Sophie. He had admitted that he had helped steal from the chemistry equipment warehouse. He even admitted that he took money for the equipment from a guy he only knew as Michael, but he hadn't admitted to what caused today's insanity.
"They flashed his face on the TV about the bank robbery. That's when I found out his name wasn't Michael," Josh finally crumbled.
"Pike wanted the equipment," Kara said.
"Yes. I had no idea he was some master criminal. We met in a bar a few times. Got to chatting about our troubles and he thought we could help each other. I'm in deep with my bookie and now that I have no job…" Josh was obviously on the edge of a cliff.
"So, you thought getting arrested would solve your problem?" Kara didn't get an answer to that as Sophie opened the door to the room.
"Josh what other dealings did you have with Pike?" She asked without explaining.
"None. He said that he had a small private school that couldn't afford the full price of equipment. So, if I borrowed some, we'd get money that no one would have to know about. It wasn't hard to offload a box of each pieces he said he needed. The cameras in the loading dock hadn't worked for years and the warehouse was a mess I inherited," John shrugged.
"You never worked with a Fatima or Rebecca?" Kara wanted to know.
"No…" he gave her a look like those names meant nothing.
"Then we'll just book you on the mess you made. Supergirl, we're needed elsewhere," Sophie told her. The blonde quickly left the room and a couple of Crow officers escorted Josh to his cell.
"What's going on?" Kara asked.
"Kate and Nyssa called. We've got a possible target for the Fear Toxin – the Gotham Auto Show. They found a flyer in Rebecca Burke's shop. Now that wouldn't be suspicious except for the fact that the shop was empty and the doors were unlocked," Sophie explained.
"No signs of a break-in?" The blonde wondered.
"Nope," the Crow said.
"Not good. Let's go," Kara said.
"Kate and Nyssa are already headed that way. I've called security at the Convention Center and told them to check everything. I've also got them evacuating the Convention Center. Luckily, not many people are there now," Sophie said as they moved toward the front door and Sophie's standard issue Crow armored SUV.
"I'll meet them down there after I warn Batwoman," Kara promised.
"Ok, see you there," Sophie hurried to climb into her vehicle while Kara headed into the sky and put her comms back in.
"You read me?" She asked anyone on the other end.
"Got you. Can you check the roof of the convention center?" Kate asked.
"You got it. Sophie is enroute. Security personnel already on evacuating people," Kara warned her.
"Nyssa and I are staring at security footage. Trying to see if anyone or anything suspicious might be located. We've got Robert here helping us," the brunette told her.
"ETA is one minute," Supergirl promised.
