Chapter 8: Return to Olympus

Percy was unusually quiet as he hung back and watched. There was something about seeing the original team working together that really reminded him of himself, Annabeth and Grover. Theseus was so much like himself, his bickering and banter with Ariadne was the same as his with Annabeth's, while Pirithous was the peace-bringer between them.

"What's with that wistful look on your face, kiddo?" Pirithous asked as he spotted Percy.

"Yes," Ariadne squinted her eyes at him. "Unusually quiet. Did you break something?"

"I broke a gadget once during my first week!" Percy threw his hands up flustered. "No, I didn't!"

All he had wanted was to be a little bit nostalgic as he watched the original team return from a mission one last time before he would hand in his notice. They'd always known this wasn't permanent. He wanted to learn from Theseus and his team and he really thought he had. Especially about leadership. Theseus led as a friend, he led as an equal who wanted the input of his team in his decisions, who while taking charge never saw himself above them. That was the kind of leader Percy wanted to be too and he thought he had learned a lot from Theseus.

"You were glorious out there, my little ocean!"

Asterion's voice was booming, filled with pride and adoration, as he barreled past Percy so he could sweep Theseus off his feet and whirl him around until he put him down to kiss him. Asterion was closely followed by a very exhausted looking Nico, as the two returned from their own mission.

"Thanks, babe," Theseus was flushed, smoothing his hands over Asterion's broad chest, before he returned his attention toward Percy. "But I believe there was something... I was about to be told."

Damn. The way that man could read people and his intense stare were scary at times. Percy ducked his head and instinctively sought out Nico, reaching out for his hand to squeeze. Despite his exhaustion, Nico straightened up a little and faced the experienced heroes with Percy head on.

"What's this about?" Ariadne asked, even as she sat down at her chair.

She rarely did missions outside, she preferred being the woman in the chair. Dark-gray eyes stared at him from behind thin-framed glasses as Ariadne adjusted her thick, dark hair into a braid.

"We..." Percy paused, motioning between himself and Nico. "Are officially giving notice. We're, uh, grateful for everything you taught us, but... We have other things waiting for us."

"Ah," Theseus looked pleased by that. "I've been waiting for you to gather the courage and self-certainty to move forward with your plans, Percy. I know... you will achieve great things."

He stepped up to them, resting a hand on Percy's shoulder to give it a squeeze, before then also resting one hand on Nico's. "You both will. You are great heroes in the making and you came a long way since you entered my agency. I need you both to know that if you ever need anything from me, or from our agency, you know how to reach us, okay?"

Before he'd finished talking, Percy launched himself at Theseus in a tight hug. "I will. And, uh, actually, I think there might be something where I could use some strings to be pulled..."

"Anything I can help you with making your dreams happen, kiddo."

It was an impulse decision on a scale Annabeth had never done before, but as she wrapped up things at the camp, all of her stuff neatly packed – and in particular, the little pieces that had gathered over the past months of living here, jewelry made by and gifted to her by Bianca, wrapped in cloths to protect them for the journey to New York – she made the most impulsive, heart-led decision of her life. When Bianca stood in front of her, all dark eyes and sad smiles, Annabeth grabbed her face and pulled her close and paused for just a second, just a breath before her mouth, before kissing her.

And oh did it pay off, as Bianca kissed her back with as much fierceness and passion as Annabeth was giving her. Their hands grasped each other's bodies, fingers entangling in the other's curls. Both were flushed and breathless by the time Thalia walked in and interrupted them.

"Well now, I wanted to ask if you were ready to leave, Annabeth, but... I guess not."

There was a giant shit-eating grin on Thalia's face as she regarded Bianca and Annabeth for just another moment before she left the two to themselves again. Only then did Annabeth realize that they were still holding hands, Bianca running gentle circles on the back of Annabeth's hands.

"So..." Bianca drawled off, searching Annabeth's face. "You couldn't have done this earlier? Like, before you are about to leave the hunt to move back to the city?"

Annabeth could feel herself blush harder. "I... I mean, you do... You can shadow-travel. And I will be on a team with your brother and your sister, so... there are plenty of reasons for you to visit...?"

The way she bit her lips made Bianca sigh hopelessly. "You're lucky you're cute."

And then she leaned in and kissed Annabeth again, a gentle peck on the lips but the gentleness of it was what had Annabeth's heart fluttering. Damn, she really should have done this earlier.

"This is... a lot of work," Luke frowned as he looked around.

Everything was covered in a sheet of dust. Olympus hadn't been in use for a long time now. Yet there was something so contagious to Percy's excitement and even with all the work ahead of them, Luke felt himself overcome with eagerness himself. A project, one with a real future.

"How are things going to go?" Rachel asked, running her fingers over the dust. "I mean, I'm not quitting on Octavian and what the two of us have been building, but that's not required anyway, since I see Thalia on the roster too and she is still a huntress. But, you know. Details?"

This was the first time they were all in the same space. All the new Olympians. Percy was practically bouncing on the balls of his feet. Seeing all of them together made this feel so much more real than ever before, all of his planning and envisioning was one thing, but... this was all of them in the actual Olympus. Their new headquarters, thanks in large parts to Theseus.

The last favor Percy had asked for before parting with his mentor was for him to pull some strings so Percy and his team could use Olympus. It was a big ask, Percy was aware. But Olympus stood empty, nobody used it. This was important, it should be used by heroes, not stand empty. Which was the argument Theseus made, on Percy's behalf (and Percy knew that he could have asked his dad and mom, but he didn't want to. He wanted to make a name for himself. Asking Theseus for help was still asking for it earned with what he had proven he was capable of, not simply nepotism because he was the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite).

"Yes, not all of us are going to be here full-time," Percy stepped forward – into the figurative spotlight, feeling the eyes of everyone on himself. "Everyone is offered an apartment in the Empire State Building at a good price. You can choose to live right here, if you'd like, but it's your choice. If you already have a place in the city and don't want to move, like Rach or Luke, I get that."

"Yeah, there is no way Tav would agree to move into a skyscraper," Luke chuckled. "Also, a little too... close to all of you for his taste, I'd say."

Rachel nodded her agreement. "And I am so not giving up my perfect studio."

"The upper levels are effectively closed to the public again," Percy continued, now pacing. "We'll... have a lot of work ahead of us, Luke is right. The museum will be moved to the lower levels of the building to still give access to the public while giving us the space to do... our work. I'd... like to remodel but also get all of your input on how we remodel. So... For now, let's get settled in. A tour, of the place and the apartments that are offered so you guys can make a decision. And then a team-meeting on what we can do with the space. Sound good?"

He looked around and received nods and words of affirmation from everyone. Good. Good start.

Jason was busy unpacking their stuff in their new apartment while his boyfriends were touring Olympus with their new team and doing who knew what. Superhero stuff. He had to admit that, at times, he felt... left out. Nico and Percy were planning this and had this all to themselves and Jason was, by virtue of things, not part of it. Which felt frustrating at times. And at these times, he tried to remind himself of how great their relationship was, the trust they had built between them, the life they had built together. That helped him calm down himself usually.

The apartment was nice. Huge, so high up they could oversee so much of New York. Their view was breathtaking that it alone was worth moving here, honestly. Putting another book into the shelf, Jason moved on to walk over to their large bed and throw himself onto it.

"New start, new life," Jason whispered to himself. "New me."

Maybe part of the frustration was also with himself. With the future that laid before him. School had been... safe. A set schedule, he knew what to expect, where to go, what to do. Now, he was left to his own devices. He had to go and look for a job. And yes, he knew he was going to have more chances waiting for him, as the son of Beryl Grace and Tristan McLean, he knew their names were going to open more auditioning doors for him and may bend more ears to him, may make more people willing to cast him just to be in the good graces of his parents. Still though, nothing was sure. Not yet anyway. As of right now, all Jason had was a newspaper with auditions circled.

Reyna, Annabeth and Piper ended up taking an apartment together, right opposite the boys. Even at a reasonable price, rent was expensive enough that they decided to spit it three ways. They all had experience sharing their living spaces, from home with their siblings, the dorms at high school, Reyna and Piper had lived in their shoe-box apartment together in San Francisco as of late, and both Reyna and Annabeth had lived with the huntresses. Compared to all of these living situations, this large luxurious apartment was a definite upgrade.

"So... you and Hazel are... no longer a thing?" Annabeth asked carefully.

She hadn't exactly stayed in touch with Reyna or Piper. They'd run into each other at Grover and Juniper's wedding and whenever they saw each other, they were friendly and Annabeth was looking forward to living with them. They had been close. Both of them were her exes, but they hadn't drifted apart out of malice or any such negativity. Time and space had just pulled them apart. Peoples lives grew in different ways and sometimes, people lost touch. Sometimes, those lives would then bring them together again, as was the case right now, and Annabeth was grateful for it.

"No," Piper shrugged, turning away a little and busying herself with putting up the shelf in the living room. "I'm... It didn't work out. We were good, while we were good. But... I guess it wasn't meant to be. I, uh... Honestly, maybe a little nervous about how well we'll work on a team now? Like, we didn't break up bad but I also... haven't seen her since the break-up, at all? And now we're going to... work together, on the same team...?"

"Ri—ight," Reyna cleared her throat at that, her eyes landing on Annabeth for just a moment. "That can be... I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work though. You're... amazing, Piper. You'll do it."

Huh. Annabeth blinked a couple of times as she clocked a particular way in which Reyna was now looking at Piper. With so much softness and that particular little smile. Okay. Interesting.

The offer to live at the Empire State Building was one that was very hard to decline. It was also not the most affordable still though, not for young upcoming heroes in the working. It was a conversation to be had though, or rather two conversations to be had. Leo and Frank had been dancing around moving in together for a while now, never quite bringing it up even though both wanted it. Cute dorks who weren't sure if the other wanted it too. This was the perfect thing to get them going. However, they both knew it wasn't exactly going to work for just the two of them.

So the second conversation they had was a sit-down with both Will Solace and Jake Mason.

"This is... a nice apartment," Jake commented, eyes wide as he looked around. "Whose... is it?"

"Ours, if we want it," Leo was bouncing a little. "If... you want it."

"Mh?" Jake turned his attention onto Leo. "What?"

"We – all of us upcoming Olympians, or whatever – were offered apartments," Will supplied, reaching out to rest a hand on his boyfriend's thigh. "And... I gotta admit, I may have fallen a tiny bit in love with this place. It is gorgeous and much better than the tiny place we shared so far."

"Also looks much more expensive though...?"

"That's where we come in," Frank offered. "The apartment is big. I mean, huge. It's a three bedroom. So, we thought... How about we move in together and split the rent four ways? Turn the third bedroom into a work space of sorts. Maybe for you and Leo, a workshop?"

Jake's eyes were sparkling with eagerness at that additional suggestion. Hook, line and sinker.

Percy bit his lips, his eyes on Jason's butt as the blonde was on all four crawling around to clean up some tiny space in the control-center. It was sweet of him to come and help out with cleaning up and cleaning out Olympus. And he looked good doing it too. These jeans did hug him in all the right ways, Percy knew that. Someone elbowed him hard.

"Stop staring at Jason's ass," Leo gave him the most pointed glare. "Get cleaning, Jackson."

"I'm just thinking!" Percy threw up his hands in surrender. "Planning! You know, leader stuff!"

"Oh, the things you are 'planning' in your dirty little mind have nothing to do with the team."

Percy narrowed his eyes at Leo and stuck out his tongue. Though he couldn't argue this any more with Leo, because Leo wasn't wrong. And since everyone else on the team – and some very helpful partners – were putting in the work, Percy couldn't slack off either.

"Boss-man," Piper stuck her head in. "We got a delivery coming in."

Okay. Okay, okay. So Percy should get to work. Before following her, he grabbed his mask and put it on. Azure blue, with a paling toward the rim like waves, curling patterns. They all were registered heroes, they had hero names registered. But it was different, going out as a hero, working as an apprentice to a big-name hero, and now doing this. Being in charge, putting his name down on things as the hero in charge. The Sea Prince, leader of his own team.

Piper herself was also wearing her costume – since she had apparently accepted the delivery. It was a very bisexual blend of pink and blue that gave purple where it met. Not in bright colors, but dulled and grayed down. She'd never been a Barbie-doll kind of type.

"Oh," Percy's eyes sparkled when he saw the deliveries. "Wonderful. Thank you so much."

Training equipment. The now former museum was being converted back to the training facilities they used to be back in his parents' days. The only rooms from the training facilities that had remained, but laid unused, had been the swimming pool. Which was currently being cleaned out too. They needed the training facilities right here, it was convenient and also important for bonding. Percy wanted the team to stand together, not just during missions. He knew it was going to be different, he knew many members of his team had a life outside of the team, so training was going to be an important part of bonding since they weren't always going to be together.

"I'm glad to have you here, even if it's not full-time," Nico grinned as he wrapped an arm around Hazel's shoulders, pulling his sister close. "I missed you."

Which was the truth. As annoyed as he was when he was spending too much time in close quarters with his sisters, too much distance to them felt just as wrong. And this life she had built for herself in Las Vegas, it felt so very alien to him. New Orleans, in a way, hadn't. She'd been from New Orleans, it had felt a little bit familiar. Like back in the very, very old days, the faintest memories Nico had of being very young, of a very tiny Hazel, when she had still been his cousin, before her parents had died and she had moved in with them. Her quest to reconnect with that past, remember and learn about her parents. But Las Vegas had been new and had been wholly hers. Nico had no connection to that, when he had stumbled into it, it had all been... different.

"We're still working out a schedule," Hazel huffed, nudging him away. "I think this may be breaking your boyfriend's brain, by the way. Trying to figure out me, Luke, Thalia, Rachel, Leo and Will. Having half your team be part-time is... an issue."

"Not with a twelve-person team," Nico shrugged. "We're not... We won't start out saving the world. We'll start out as a local team, here to protect New York. Six permanent heroes is more than enough that we can still rotate more than easily. We'll have time to figure out schedules."

"Annabeth said the same thing to Percy," Hazel huffed out a small laugh. "He's trying to solve everything all at once right now, I think. Maybe you should... check in on your boyfriend."

Nico furrowed his brows at that. Perhaps his sister was right with that one. But he also had wanted to spend some time with Hazel right now, so that left him a little torn. Hazel rolled her eyes.

"Go," Hazel shoved him again, this time more pointedly. "I wouldn't mind spending an evening with Piper, Reyna and Annabeth. I have friends too, you know. I'm staying here. I cleared my schedule with Al and Lou, I'll be exclusively in New York for the next three weeks for us to get this all going and for us to get settled, before I'll return to Vegas again. They got the store covered."

"And I'm grateful for that," Nico leaned in to kiss her temple. "And thankful for you."

The two of them parted ways on that, with Hazel heading downstairs toward the girls' apartment and Nico to venture wherever his boyfriend was hiding out. He found Percy in his office – in the former office of Chiron – hunched over too many papers. Well that didn't look right.

"Amore," Nico approached and wrapped his arms around Percy's neck. "Let's go home."

"Mh?" Percy looked up, tiredness all over his face. "Just a little more. I gotta figure-"

"I'm sure Jay is waiting up for us, it's getting late."

"Oh," Percy blinked owlishly. "Right. Yeah. Okay. Let's get home."

The mention of Jason did the trick and Percy got off the floor, allowing Nico to lead him out of the office and toward the private elevator. One of the first renovations was locking the upper levels from public access again. By the time they reached their bedroom, where Jason was already in bed with his glasses perched on his nose as he read a book, Percy seemed so exhausted, he just... collapsed forward into the bed, landing face first next to Jason.

"...Someone seems tired," Jason turned to look at Nico with mild concern.

"Someone is a little too overly eager to make this work so he is overworking himself."

Percy huffed, glaring at his boyfriends. "Someone is in the room."

Jason smiled at him with gentle eyes, putting his book down before leaning over to kiss him. "Maybe this someone should sleep some then, mh?"

Percy grumbled but was definitely too tired to argue with him, already drifting off to sleep. Nico sighed, taking off Percy's jeans at least before joining his boyfriends in bed.

Author's note: I'd like to note that I know in our world the Empire State Building does not host apartments, however, it also doesn't host a hero central sooo, ya know, figured that this world's Empire State would be different. Next chapter, time for some team building and the first mission ;)
