"As soon as I return home this afternoon, I'll set right to work on the DNA test." Dr. Evans vowed to Severus on Sunday morning, as he and the other parents prepared to end their visit to Hogwarts by departing on the train.

Severus nodded.

"...Then I suppose that will tell us where to go from there." Dr. Evans smiled softly, "Regardless of what the results show, Professor Snape, I do thank you very much for hosting me, as well as the others, this weekend. It's been a treat to see my little Lily before the holidays and to understand the magnitude of the esteemed institution that will be educating her."

"Of course." Severus frowned.

As the train whistle blew, Dr. Evans bid him farewell before he boarded the waiting locomotive.

Severus's dark robes rustled in the breeze created by the passing train as the Hogwarts Express pulled away from the track at an impressive speed, running just slightly behind schedule.

As he watched the train vanish into the distance, a frown marred his pale face.

Had he really spent the weekend with his son?

…………Did Harriet have a brother?

A half-brother?

—————————————————————

Severus junior bore a frown that eerily resembled Headmaster Snape's as he walked the hallways of his research laboratory at the hospital later that evening.

The hair Severus had granted him was clutched firmly between his fingers; silky, long, and black.

As Dr. Evans retrieved one of his own shoulder-length red hairs, he undertook the nerve-wracking task of running the crucial DNA test.

Alone in his lab except for an occasional, passing technician who bustled around tending to their overtime assignments, Dr. Evans nearly gnawed his lips off as he waited to learn the results.

Unable to obtain his answer that evening, he went home to an empty house, after which he spent hours wandering the halls as anxiety forced him to stay awake.

He had just dozed off the following morning when an unexpected phone call roused him from his brief slumber.

With a noise between a gasp and a snort, he swiped the screen of his iPhone and hurriedly answered, "Yes?!"

"Dr. Evans? This is Natalie." A voice came from the other end of the phone as one of his surgical technicians identified themselves.

"Oh……..Hello, Natalie." Dr. Evans sighed as he shook off his drowsiness and fought through his surprise.

"I was just calling about the DNA test results we received this morning." Natalie went on, "The system says you ordered it last night? I'm sorry, sir, there's no label on the file besides your name."

"What did it say?!" He asked urgently as he sat up with wide eyes.

The breath seemed to evaporate from his lungs as he waited to hear the words she would utter next.

"Dr. Evans'." Natalie explained, the shrug evident even in her voice.

"No." He sighed impatiently as he closed his eyes in irritation, "Not the name on the file, the results, Natalie, the results! What did the test results say?"

"Oh, of course. It was a match, sir." Natalie replied.

Dr. Evans' mouth fell open.

"...The two samples tested were a 98% match for each other." She added, "Shall I put a name and a medical record number on the file? And send the results somewhere?"

"-No." Dr. Evans said quickly, "I'll……..I'll do that myself. Thanks, Natalie. See you this afternoon."

Before she had a chance to respond, Dr. Evans ended the call and leapt to his feet.

In a frantic haste, he turned his house upside down in a desperate search for blank copy paper and an empty envelope.

Mailed letters in the muggle world had basically been rendered obsolete.

Regardless, due to his non-magical status, Dr, Evans realized that sending word through the post would be the fastest way to notify Hogwarts' headmaster of the shocking confirmation.

His dark eyes narrowed as his pen scribbled across the page.

To Mr. Severus Snape,

I hope this letter finds you well, truly. I've decided the most egregarious confirmation that you and I are indeed, at least biologically, father and son. Please accept this humble invitation to my home in London for dinner so that we discuss this intriguing new development further. I have a great desire to know you better, which I can only hope is returned.

I've waited for you for a lifetime,

Severus T. Evans, MD

Dr. Evans had learned from an early age to content himself with the knowledge that his father was dead, that he would never know the stoic presence of a paternal figure in his life the way his playmates had.

After he mailed his letter and returned home, he contemplated his plight in silence for several hours while silent tears lamenting what could have been and what may perhaps still be ran down his cheeks.

Severus sat at his desk while he opened his mail the following morning.

One letter after another, he read and answered each parcel until he came to the last envelope.

The stark whiteness spoke of its origin from the muggle world before Severus noticed the sender's name at the top.

Severus T Evans, MD

His heart raced and his jaw clenched as he used his tapered fingers to slit the sealed envelope, remove the letter inside, and read over the words it contained.

Severus's dark eyes widened.

As he rose from his seat and paced across the room, he resisted the urge to apparate straight to the return address.

Answers!

He needed answers!

Severus Snape had never made love to any woman besides Lily…..Lily Evans.

His mouth fell open as he thought.

Lily.

It was true, his suspicions were true, they had to be!

The boy's mother, Lily, was…….his Lily, his lost love.

Severus struggled to swallow as he staggered over to the window for a breath of fresh air.

If Lily had borne him a son, that meant….

That meant…….

Dr. Evans had told him the truth, she was still alive, living in muggle London, completely unaware of her past, of Severus, of Harriet.

A sound between a gasp and a cry left Severus's lips as he raised his black eyes towards the cloudy sky.

Severus remained a twitchy, irritable mess of jittery nervousness for the rest of the day.

He snarked his way through his classes, interrupted by meal breaks and lengthy silences of miserable brooding while he paced the confines of his dungeon office.

Later that evening, during dinner in the Great Hall, Harriet blinked at her father as she sat beside him in his carved chair.

"...What's the matter?" She asked while the rest of the room's inhabitants enjoyed their meal.

Severus shot her a silent, scathing scowl in reply.

He longed to tell Harriet that she had a brother, that her mother lived, but Severus Snape was not a hasty man.

As he looked into Harriet's emerald eyes, he vowed to find out more information before he breathed a word of his new knowledge to her.

The scheduled dinner night seemed to drift slowly towards both Severus senior and junior in the sands of time.

Finally, the evening arrived and Severus senior found himself on Dr. Evans' doorstep, dressed in his usual, black robes as he raised a hand and knocked on the painted wood.

A muggle couple walking their dog happened to pass by and as they threw him questioning looks, he realized that perhaps he should have worn different clothing.

As he thought, the door swung open and he found himself staring into a familiar face, his own, no, his son's.

"Good evening." Dr. Evans said with a small smile.

His deep voice rang with his father's same, decadent purr.

"Good evening." Severus greeted him in return.

He silently reminded himself again that he was not, in fact, staring into a mirror that showed his youth.

His son had red hair, wasn't that enough of a difference all on its own?

Severus swallowed as he realized the shades of crimson in Dr. Evans' hair replicated his memory of Lily's tresses perfectly.

"Won't you come in?" Dr. Evans asked as he gestured inside.

Severus nodded.

As Dr. Evans swept to the side, Severus glided past him and into the fine house.

Besides Lily's family, Severus hadn't visited that many muggle homes in his lifetime.

He had no idea about what would be considered stylish or marks of social standing, but as he glanced around at the high ceilings, impeccable neatness, and quality of the decorations, he inferred his son's affluence.

"As you know, my Lily is still at school." Dr. Evans nodded, "At Hogwarts……"

Severus nodded with his signature scowl firmly on his pale face.

Dr. Evans cleared his throat, "However…..your Lily is waiting in the dining room, Dad."

Severus's breath hitched.

He closed his eyes for a second as if a great thorn had been pulled from his hand.

As he laid a hand over his chest, Dr. Evans asked, "May I call you 'Dad'? I know it sounds a bit strange, but you are my-"

"-You may call me whatever you want as long as you lead me to her…..immediately!" Severus commanded in a terse gasp.

"Certianly." Dr. Evans replied with a rushed nod. He walked in striding steps through the main living room, rounded a corner, and gestured down a short hallway, "This way, she's eager to meet you."

Lily was eager to see him?

Severus didn't have to be convinced further.

He followed obediently on his son's heels, desperate for a reunion yet simultaneously sick with fear that somehow it had all been wrong, the assumptions, the coincidences, the DNA test.

Dr. Evans entered the dining room first and held a hand out to keep Severus in the hallway as he spoke to someone, "...Mum? He's here! I've found Dad and brought him home. The test was absolute. It's him! It's really him!"

"Oh, do let me see him, love!" A singsong voice replied.

Tears welled in Severus's dark eyes.

He would recognize the sweet sound of his lover's beautiful cadence anywhere.

That was Lily who had spoken, there could be no doubt.

It happened in a blur.

Dr. Evans stepped aside.

Severus pushed past him.

"LILY!" He cried as his eyes fell on his dear one once again.

She had barely aged a day since he had seen her last.

Her beauty had not diminished in the slightest.

Dressed in muggle clothes, her green eyes were as bright as ever, and her hair remained its same shade of vibrant red.

"...Hello!" Lily said with a soft smile.

It shattered Severus to bits that she could not recognize him, although she tried very hard as her emerald gaze scanned over every inch of his face.

"...You were my husband?" She asked with a wonderfully soft smile.

Severus melted at the comforting sight.

"Nearly." He replied, "I'm afraid we were forced apart before we could marry…. My name is Severus Snape."

He purposely omitted James, at least for the time being.

"Oh……" Lily frowned.

She glanced down at the table for a moment as Dr. Evans slipped away.

"...Sorry if this seems rude," She said with a wry smile as she glanced up again, "But why have you never come for us? Why did you not seek us out?"

Severus's chest heaved in a gasping sigh as Lily splintered his cracked heart, "Forgive me, my love. They told me you had died and……And I've only recently learned of our son's existence."

Lily furrowed her brow as she tried to understand Severus's explanation.

"Why then-" She began until Dr. Evans interrupted as he strode past Severus carrying a massive, cooked turkey.

"Now then!" He called, "Why don't we all sit down and share a meal together? Our first one as a proper family!"

Severus's bewilderment silenced him from mentioning Harriet right away as he sat down across from Lily, at the head of the table, while their son placed himself on his right.

The chatter that ensued that evening was a bit awkward and tinged with painful lament, but it remained surprisingly enjoyable.

Severus delighted in connecting with his darling and their son.

Lily had no memory of Severus Snape.

Regardless, by the time they parted, she had already arranged to meet him for dinner a few days later.

Later that night, as she lay down in bed, a blush tinted her cheeks as she thought about his velvet voice and dark eyes.

She could easily believe Severus Snape had in fact been the man she had loved.
