There were days when he did not feel like laughing, and many times when he was not truly so cheerful, but he would laugh and paint a smile, all for her his little majesties. He would never dare destroy their world, but protect them, teach them, endure their comments. Everyone had their ways of adjusting, and whether or not they were effective or detrimental. His way, at least the way he knew how was to carry on as usual, to be convivial, but untouchable. It would not be difficult, just throw a few insignificant details into the wind, and wait for everyone to buy them up.
Whether he was alright, it would be a secret, to the bells, to the tresses of golden hair upon his head, and to his pen. Laughter, it was the best disguise after all, and a smile was the simplest gesture. He was an actor after all, what was a little more pretending when everyone proved to be false or true? Oh, but what a pity it would be, when gaiety failed, and thunder struck golden upon the tongue, when silver lashes were bestowed into the unlikeliest of listeners. Indelible, those sparks, those scotch marks upon the soul.
Ingratiating, he would remain, for the benefit of his little majesties, for the lady Knight, for the midnight sadness. Odious it would be, but the perspicuous man he was, the truth could not be ignored. A fool, would remain a fool, as lowly, unmoved, and frozen in his dealings. Blame it on birth, on circumstance, on time, but he was a blundering, pathetic coward of a fool. He might have been almost a hero, but at the end of the day, he would be stuck playing the fool.
