Passing times with the States
Bascal
...
It was a fine day in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Sun and rain are quite normal. Kuala Lumpur, well, he's rich and always causing trouble when New York, Hong Kong and South Korea are involved, even with the 'or'. Trouble follows them wherever they go. He has tons of credit cards to buy guys' stuff not girls, well some girls' stuff for his sisters whenever their birthday is coming soon.
"I'm bored. What should I do?" Kuala Lumpur asked himself.
Bored? How can such a person like him be bored when he has the best WiFi spots in the country, tons of entertainment and all. Well, KL might be bored because of the lack of craziness.
Then he got an idea. Pulling out his brand new smartphone from his pocket, he starts dialing some numbers.
"Hey, are you free today? Let's do something crazy together."
-Time skip-
New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong and South Korea gathered at KL's living room. Tokyo had been dragged in, of course the last time he got in trouble, his New Year money was cut big time to pay for the damages he and KL caused at Malayisa's place. New York, well, his boss made him pay as well. Hong Kong and South Korea both face Malaysia's wrath.
"Welcome to my humble home my dear friends." KL said.
Hong Kong rolled his eyes as New York snorted.
"What shall it be this time KL? Go on a crazy adventure or pranking the other nations or states? London is a good choice."
KL shook his head. "Nah, we went on a crazy adventure around the world already. Pranking other nations or states, we done that several times, Kak Malaysia will kill me while London will torture before murdering me."
South Korea perked up, suggesting "How about watching-"
"NO!" Everyone objected.
"How about visiting the other states KL-kun? We can get to know them better by asking what they do mostly during their free time." Tokyo suggested.
"But Tokyo, we have KL here who can tell us." New York said.
"It's too difficult to explain to you. It's better if I take you guys to them." Kuala Lumpur said.
"He's just lazy isn't he?" Tokyo asked.
"Welcome to the world of Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo." Hong Kong simply said.
"Where life must be made simple." South Korea added with a grin.
"If not KL is no longer KL." New York added as well.
...
Approaching Selangor's house, Kuala Lumpur motioned for the others to be quiet. The others nodded as Kuala Lumpur opens the door slowly and carefully as if he's expecting some kind of a booby trap.
"Selangor, are you here?" Kuala Lumpur called out.
Without waiting for any response, Kuala Lumpur pushes Tokyo to the front before standing behind him. Tokyo looked at Kuala Lumpur questionly when Selangor, KL's big sister, suddenly came rushing out, crushing Tokyo in a death hug.
"My dear baby brother! Oh how I missed you so much!" Selangor said.
New York, Hong Kong and South Korea tried to hold back their laughter when Selangor called KL 'baby brother'.
"Se-Selangor-san...c-can't breathe."
Weird, since when did her baby brother started talking Japanese, and to add 'san'. Selangor releases Tokyo who in turn catches his breath before glaring at Kuala Lumpur.
"My, you don't have to avoid my hugs baby brother." Selangor said, a little dissappointed while stepping aside for the others to enter.
"I'll pass out from lack of oxygen if I do that." Kuala Lumpur said casually, grabbing some snacks from the table before passing it to the others.
"Anyway, Miss Selangor, could you tell us what do you do most during your free time?" New York asked.
Selangor tilted her head to the side. "Free time? Well, I mostly watched some dramas on TV or on my computer. If not I cooked some food to bring over to my boss."
Tokyo nodded as he jolted down everything. "Are there anything else you wish to add?"
Selangor blushed as she glanced down. "Besides praying for Kuala Lumpur to call me 'Kakak' once again in a very sweet tone, there's nothing else."
Before anyone could respond, Kuala Lumpur shoved everyone outside.
"Next stop, we're heading to Putrajaya."
-Time Skip-
"Things I'm doing during my free time?" Putrajaya asked while doing some paperworks in his office.
"If you had any Putrajaya-san, please tell us." Tokyo said.
After signing a few papers, Putrajaya gave them a dark look, scaring everyone but Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.
"We can leave if you want da-ze." South Korea said, wanting to get out of here soon.
"Watching the scenery, eat some snacks while listening to the rambling of those people. Taking a boat ride around my place and...that's about it. I have limited free time unlike our dear big sister who dumped this onto me and those good-for-nothing-"
"Chill Putrajaya, at this rate you're going to blow." Hong Kong said.
"What Putrajaya does is more like a routine already." Kuala Lumpur added.
Putrajaya resisted the urge to strangle his brother silly. Sure Kuala Lumpur had been older but stuck in a teenage boy's form. Clearing his throat, he said in a low and dark voice "Please scram before I decided to kill you all."
Scrambling out of the office, Kuala Lumpur checked the time on a huge clock hanging on the wall.
"Let's go to our next stop." Kuala Lumpur said before turning to the others.
"Make sure you had your running shoes and try to jolt information fast Tokyo, because we're heading to Negeri Sembilan."
-Time Skip-
Negeri Sembilan, a pair of non-identical cheeky twins. Kuala Lumpur texted them that he'll pay a visit with a few others.
"Ni hao Hong Kong! Hello New York! Konnichiwa Tokyo! Annyeonghaseyo S. Korea!" the twins greeted.
"So what do you two most during your free time?" Hong Kong asked.
"Take a dive in Port Dickson, makan-makan, running and pulling pranks on everyone!" the two replied.
"Makan-makan?" New York asked, confused.
"It means eating. Depends on how you use it." Kuala Lumpur replied.
"Wanna swim or take a dive? It's peaceful and jumping on waves are nice!" the twins offered.
Then a loud shouting interupts them "Hey you two cheeky kids! Get back here!"
The twins screamed before running off. Kuala Lumpur followed with the others trailing behind him. With an impassive look, Hong Kong asks "What did you do?"
"Nothing" the twins said in unison.
"Then why are we running da-ze?" South Korea asked.
"Yeah, what he said!"
"Getting caught by their boss leads to complaints and complaints mean more trouble with the higher ups. And the two must have drank lots of espresso while no one is looking. They must have broke tons of stuff there." Kuala Lumpur replied.
"Where are we heading next KL-kun?" Tokyo asked.
"Kak Malaysia's old home!"
-Time Skip-
Kuala Lumpur knocked on the old style wooden door, waiting for someone to open the door.
"Yes!" The door opens revealing a young girl who looks like a younger version of Malaysia except her bangs covered her entire forehead unlike Malaysia.
"Yo Malacca!" Kuala Lumpur greeted.
"Ah, KL, you came to visit! You also brought some company! Do come in!"
Kuala Lumpur and the others entered Malacca's home. Her house does have some traditional feeling that leads back to the days of the Malacca Sultanate.
"What brings you guys here?" Malacca asked.
"Just asking what do you do during your free time." New York replied.
"Free time...there are tons of things to do here. Going into the Peranakan Mansion, taking a heavily decorated bicycle rickshaw go around the place, taking a stroll next to the river, do a little sewing, embroidery and-" Malacca was cut off when the alarm rang.
Everyone glanced at the source of the alarm as Malacca stood up. "It's time for my cook-off against Penang."
Kuala Lumpur rolled his eyes. "You do those every weekend."
"Yes, well, I do have to boost my cooking skills and also to prove that my cooking is better." Malacca simply said as she went into the kitchen before coming out with a bag of kitchen utensils, ingredients and so on.
"That's a lot da-ze." South Korea pointed out.
Malacca nodded. "Indeed. Expect some free and freshly cooked food from this. Do tag along, I'm sure the others won't mind."
-Time Skip-
Penang was preparing for her big cook off with Malacca when Tokyo and the others approach her.
"Konnichiwa Penang-san." Tokyo greeted.
"Hey there"
"Annyeonghaseyo"
"Ni Hao."
"Hello, whose waves washed you up here?" Penang greeted.
"Actually we would like to ask a few things from you."
"Yeah, what did you do during your free time?" New York asked.
Penang raised an eyebrow before continuing "Take a tour around my place, go to the beach for a relaxing evening, dig myself in the delicious cuisine that my people cooked, do a little embroidery for myself, visit the Peranakan Mansion to indulge myself in the past."
"Besides hanging out with Singapore." Kuala Lumpur added.
"Go away brother, the last thing I need is you bothering me on my cook off with Malacca."
"Yeah, yeah"
...
"Eh? You want to know about what I do to pass the times? Isn't that invading a person's privacy?" Pahang asked, slightly annoyed.
Kuala Lumpur snorted. "Please, as if I'm doing this for myself. No one even cares about what you do anyway."
"Excuse me!?"
Tokyo quickly intervened the two before a full on argument could occur. "Now, now, we are just doing this so that the readers can know the states better."
New York nodded. "Yeah, leave no detail behind!"
Hong Kong rolled his eyes. "I'm out of here."
"We haven't finish yet Hong Kong."
Hong Kong cast South Korea a look. "It's best if we move on with the next state. We can get things faster this way."
Kuala Lumpur raised his hand. "Can I join you?"
WHACK!
"Fine, I'll stay." Kuala Lumpur grumbled after receiving a blow from his sister.
"Then, at least have South Korea with you. I'll be going then with Tokyo."
After Hong Kong left, dragging Tokyo away, leaving behind Kuala Lumpur with South Korea and New York. With the two gone, who knows what trouble can they cause just by interviewing Pahang. It couldn't be bad, right?
"I'll make this quick boys. Hanging out at the national park, wander around in my already commercial Cameron Highlands thanks to those blasted, idiotic, good-for-nothing, son of a-"
"Cool sis, cool. I don't want Kak Malaysia to complain about an explosion later." Kuala Lumpur said, in a small attempt to cool his sister down.
Pahang took a deep breath and continued "Sorry about that. I also like to eat, drink and perhaps do a little planting in my garden. I think that's all."
New York and South Korea nodded.
...
Kedah had been watching the cook off between Malacca and Penang. The normal cook off on who cooks better food. Not that really matters, all that they care about is the free food. Is Labuan here already with Philippines? Those two couldn't resist free food.
"Kedah" Hong Kong called, approaching the older man.
"Ah, Xiang Gang (HK's Chinese name), Tokyo, what brings you here?" Kedah asked.
*Skip the explanation because I'm lazy*
"I see now, for the readers is it? Besides going to Langkawi, watching Malacca and Penang having a cooking battle, listen to some music, visit my boss (the Sultan of course), surfing the net? There's none."
Hong Kong nodded. "I see, thanks for sharing some time uncle."
Tokyo paused in his writing and glanced at Hong Kong. "Hong Kong-san, you're already talking like KL-kun."
Hong Kong's eyes widen a little before returning back to his normal impassive look. "Great, I had been infected by the Malaysian virus. Is there any WiFi hotspots here? Rewatching some of my movies might help."
...
While eating some pomelo while watching a football match, Perak sat on the opposite of his brother KL, New York and South Korea.
"Let's skip to the details da-ze! What did you do during your free time?" South Korea asked.
Perak swallowed as he pointed to the TV where an ongoing football match is airing. "Besides that, going to my Lost World of Tambun, eating, watching Kak Malacca and Kak Penang having a cook off, FB and...nothing else."
"At least you have Lost World of Tambun." KL said, eyes not leaving the TV.
"I did bump into many foreigners. Almost everyone there thought I was a lost child when I am just wandering around."
...
Johor, yes, one of the adults among the states is also watching the cook off between Penang and Malacca. Well, that is the only worth watching entertainment around for them. However he along with other states are wondering, is there an end to this cooking battle. Not like they mind but almost every time they have a cooking battle. They're the ones to complain, their food are pretty good as well, million times better than eating England's scones.
"Johor-san, konnichiwa." Tokyo greeted.
"Ah, selamat petang (good afternoon) Tokyo, Hong Kong, are you going to interview me about the same thing as well?"
Both nodded. "Yes please"
"Well as you know, my weekends are Sunday and Monday unlike the other states. So I mostly spend my time, hanging around my Legoland (not Hello Kitty Land, those are for girls...and China), if not I might wander around my place till I bump into a familiar face, watching some football match, surfing the net looking for something good to watch or read."
"That's all?" Hong Kong asked.
"What did you expect from me? I am not very popular with tourists unlike dear Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca. I am only famous because of Legoland and Hello Kitty Land. Heading to Singapore doesn't make much of a difference except that I will spend more that I had already did."
...
"Want to know what I do to pass the time?" Terengganu asked.
Kuala Lumpur nodded. "Yes Kak Terengganu. Although I know you would mostly take a dive in your famous beaches."
"Indeed but it cannot be help that there are some idiots who polluted them yet get away with it. Because of them I'm losing tourists! Why can't people just treasure the environment! Penang also complains about losing tourists because of her polluted beach. My sea turtles are also in risk of extinction because of some idiots as well! When I find out who's responsible, I'm going to-"
"OK,OK, just take a deep breath Kak. What's with you and the others? Losing your cool like that, I'm not surprise about Pahang but-"
"Yes I know KL. I just can't help but to slice those idiots up." Terengganu said, rubbing her forehead.
"Isn't that something Kyoto would do?" New York asked.
"And Shanghai." KL added.
"Why slicing people up? Can't you just beat them up the normal way da-ze?"
Terengganu looked at South Korea before replying "No"
...
Hong Kong approaches Kelantan as he watches, yes, the cooking battle between Penang and Malacca. After all, it's the only entertainment worth watching and...you'll get free food in the end.
"Konnichiwa Kelantan-san." Tokyo greeted.
Kelantan nodded in greeting. "Hello there Tokyo, Hong Kong. Care to watch the battle with us? Free food in the end."
"Maybe later Kelantan. We need to interview you, if you don't mind." Hong kong said.
Kelantan nodded again. "I understand. You want to know what I do with my free time, don't you? Well, as mentioned in the last few chapters, I had a boss who is very strict with Islamic laws, that means no entertainment at my place. I had to go to other states for entertainment. I constantly practiced my shadow puppets in other states. If not I'll just stuffed my stomach with sweets. Visiting Langkawi isn't bad either or Penang or Malacca. They have lots of entertainment and they would always sponsor me some food."
"You'll get cavity at this rate."
...
"Perlis!" Kuala Lumpur called.
The young girl, who was fishing at a lake, turned to her brother, Kuala Lumpur.
"You're free for the moment Perlis?" Kuala Lumpur asked.
Perlis nodded.
"Great, can we interview you for a while?"
Perlis tilted her head to the side. "What for KL?"
-Skip explanation-
"I see. What I usually do is just fishing, eating in my own restaurants and hang out with Mr. Canada for some pancakes." Perlis said.
New York grinned. "Are you two perhaps...?"
"What do you mean da-ze?" South Korea asked.
KL grinned. "Perlis is the state counterpart to Canada and considering those two are always together..."
Before anyone could say anything, Perlis used all of her strength to knock New York and KL with her fishing rod. That gotta hurts.
...
After interviewing the states on the Peninsular, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and their team head to East Malaysia where there are more states/territories waiting to be interviewed.
Fortunately, they don't have to look everywhere as Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan were hanging out with each other...scratch that, Sarawak and Labuan were fighting over who gets to protect Sabah and all.
"Oi, keep it down you two! You're disturbing nature!" Kuala Lumpur yelled.
"You're the one who's disturbing nature KL-kun." Tokyo muttered.
Sarawak and Labuan glanced at Kuala Lumpur before stopping with their show. Sabah sighs in relief.
"You three have time?" Hong Kong asked.
Sabah nodded. "I'm free for now. What brings you here?"
-Explanation skipped-
"I see. Well there are a lot of things to do here such as going to Mount Kinabalu, helping out with the villagers, hanging out in the jungle with the animals and all. Brunei often comes here as well. Swimming would be one of the things I usually do but it's getting dangerous now so I have to be on alert most of the time." Sabah said.
"How about you two da-ze?" South Korea asked.
"Me? Hanging out with Sabah of course!" Both Sarawak and Labuan said proudly at the same time before glaring at each other.
"Ok...one by one guys." KL said.
Sarawak decides to go first. "Besides hanging out with Sabah, I like to go and be one with nature, helping out my people with fishing and farming and perhaps sometimes take a tour around Kuching."
Labuan then steps forward, pushing Sarawak aside, causing the other to glare at him.
"I often help Sabah with whatever help she needs like fishing, farming, hanging out with the orang utan. It's better than hanging out at Sarawak's place." Labuan said.
"Isn't the rafflesia at his place?"
...
Meow~ Meow~
The meowing of the cats could be heard at Kuching's house. His place could be like Greece's already. Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, was lying in front of the house, sleeping when one of the cats jumped onto him.
Kuching lazily picked up his cat and said "Hey KL, don't be like that. Don't sleep on my face like that."
Kuala Lumpur, who was there, frowning and slightly offended that the cat was named after him. New York and the others couldn't help but snicker at the Malaysian capital.
"Excuse me Kuching, I don't recall giving you permission to name cats after me!" KL said through his gritted teeth.
"But he really looks like you Kuala Lumpur." Kuching merely said.
"You're right, the eyes are the same!" Tokyo pointed out laughing.
Kuala Lumpur cleared his throat before asking "What did you do during your free time Kuching?"
"Hanging out with my cats...ah, Labuan and Sarawak are fighting again." Kuching said before his attention shifted to the two male cats.
"Forget about him. Let's move on."
...
Miri, an 18 year old. Yes one of the territories in Sarawak and also known as the bossy one.
"You want to interview me?" Miri asked.
"Yeah, we are wondering what did you do to past the time." South Korea replied.
Miri raised an eyebrow at the guys before continuing "Cleaning, eating, jungle trekking and going for a boat ride."
Tokyo jolted it down before thanking Miri.
"For once, you don't act so bossy." KL muttered.
"I heard that you fool. Now that you're here, why don't you help me decorate the place?" Miri asked.
KL paled. What kind of excuse he will used now?
"Sorry ah, I no free lah. A lot of work to do you know." Kuala Lumpur simply said.
"You're lying." Miri said.
"Where got? I'm not lying you know!"
...
After a long day interviewing the states, Hong Kong, South Korea, Tokyo and New York head back to KL's house after Kuala Lumpur was forced to work at Miri's place.
"I think that's about it." Tokyo said.
"Not yet!" a voice denied.
Everyone turned to the source of the voice. A small boy riding a bike.
"You still haven't interview me! I am the Malaysian micronation, the State of Bascal otherwise known as Bascal!"
...
"And? You want to be interviewed?" Hong Kong asked.
Bascal nodded. "I usually ride a bike at Terengganu's place, sometimes flying a kite, eating and I always trying to get Kak Malaysia's attention!"
"She never paid any attention to you?" New York asked.
"She wasn't aware of me..."
...
Instead of the usual special segment, we have a something different this time. For the Merdeka Day special, we will have a few different people to be interviewed on what do they think Merdeka Day is all about and how do they feel that time.
nadillaandlaprasthefireandice: Merdeaka is a day of freedom. Freedom of being united with other nations, free from fighting, free to have friends and love ones that are close to you. I feel that on that day, I want everyone to stop what they are doing and enjoy each other's company. No matter what race, skin, gender or age you are. That's all I can say. Me and my friends are a mixed bunch and I am the oldest among them. I don't care if I am old. We are one.
MasakiHikaru: Merdeka? Well.. Its about the freedom we gained over the years,I guess.. Its when we celebrate the day we suceeded to attain our right to be claimed as 1 country,as a free nation that will no longer be ruled under another nation again. I feel happy to celebrate Merdeka because it reminds us of all the hardships our leader and citizens when through just for this day and that all the hard work didnt go to waste.
Ore. Jibun. Boku. Watashi: Merdeka? Well, for me, Merdeka meant a lot, it meant freedom, not only of our lands, but of our minds from what we've been accepting as our culture of what was actually our colonies culture. On that day, I felt overwhelmed by many emotions, happy, proud, yet sad for our country loss in its culture...
RyuVonBielefeld: Let's see...I'm sure everyone had their own thought about Merdeka. But for me. (Although this might sound cheesy). Merdeka is the start of our colorful culture. We can't possibly achieve what we have today without the help of our ancestor that help us to get the freedom. Merdeka is when we have our on name. Tanah melayu at that time and now Malaysia. ^^
Perhaps what I like the most about Merdeka is because people unite (whether it's Malay, Chinese or Indian) under the same name, the same place and the same colorful culture. When we talk about Merdeka/national day etc, people didn't seem to remember their race. Forget about Malay, Chinese, or Indians. We unite under the name of Malaysian. To protect and love for Malaysia and fight for its freedom, I think that's really mean a lot.
/if you ask heta-Malaysia version.
Malacca is where he was once a full size adult. While Merdeka means he was rebirth as a child. /or so I believe hahahaha
Writer Of Illusion: Merdeka is too many Malaysians the Freedom from our countless invaders and is symbol of what our forefathers fought for with blood and tears. a Symbol of our victory.
For some it is seen as a rebirth of local rule of the land.
For others it is seen as Movement to the future together as one from all walks of life.
For the our current generation is serves as a reminder of our past and how we should live life and be greatful for what we have now because of the sacrifice of our ancestors.
In sort I guess, for me Merdeka is symbol of Sacrifice, Freedom, Unity and the undeniable proof of our faults in the past and present.
A Gift that should cherishin the depths of our hearts.
I guess that it, the meaning of merdeka for me.
Wanna hear the author's point of view?
From my point of view, merdeka is seen as a symbol of freedom from the invaders. On August 31 1957, Malaysia or the Federation of Malaya that time is independent, which Malaysians are able to rule the land their ancestors and heroes fought for a long time ago. In current time, it is also a reminder to younger generations that we are still here alive and breathing because of our ancestors and the brave heroes of Malaysia who fought bravely. It also gave us the reason to take care of this land.
How do I feel on Merdeka Day? Great! I am proud of my country! After all, it is Malaysia where my home is, it is also where I met many people who would play a part in my life and finally...it is a place where love is born...
-Line Break-
Both Male and Female Malaysia were now crying, not in the sad way.
"Why...*sniff* must they write such touching words?" Male Malaysia asked, blowing his nose with a handkerchief.
"Don't ask me lah! Ask *sniff* them instead!" Female Malaysia wailed.
"No lah *sniff*, how can I ask when I *sniff* look like I have been crying!?"
"You *sniff* are crying now!"
"You as *sniff* well!"
The two Malaysians stared at each other for a while before bawling their eyes out because of the touching words the people of Malaysia wrote. So touching!
"We love you yet don't love you because what you wrote are so touching!" both Malaysians yelled before hugging each other to cry over the touching words of their people.
...
A/N: Indeed, what you wrote are kind of touching. Nearly tear up while reading. Really good words. Honestly, they are! Now excuse me while I go and lend Male and Female Malaysia with the remaining tissues I still have left.
