A/N: New Year Special for FDM at last after running out of ideas of what to write. So…Happy New Year guys!

AU: Girl Next Door

December 31, New Year's Eve, the last day of the year. The day that we finally said goodbye to the previous year and hello to the next. It's another day to spend it with your loved ones to welcome the New Year. Parents took the day off to spend it with their children at home while some spend it just by going to the countdown.

A young girl by the name of Maya Salena watched the happy family going out together from the window in her room. She's envious of the children. Having your family with you to spend the day with. Not in Maya's case though, living with a family that is not yours, is not the same as celebrating it with your real family. She glanced at the photograph on her dresser, it was taken years ago with her parents.

Yao peeked in from the small opening of the door of the young girl's room, slightly worried that she hasn't been high spirited as usual. It's New Year's Eve, he wanted Maya to enjoy at least this day but…she has been acting weird since last night. Being the big brother, he wanted to know what bothers her but…

"Aiyah, what should I do?" Yao said worriedly to himself. "I don't even know what happened to her. Johnathan already went back to Singapore with his parents, Kiku is off celebrating with Ludwig and Feliciano. Such a timing…"

The sound of the front door opening and closing brought Yao back to reality as he leaned closer to the railing of the stairs to take a look. His face lit up at the appearance of his Vietnamese cousin entering. Who would be the better person to ask about a girl's problem other than another girl, that's it! He quickly descended the stairs, calling his Vietnamese cousin.

"Lien! Lien!" he called. His cousin, Lien, stopped and turned to Yao, who looked relief and happy. She gave Yao a look over, slightly confused at his expression. "What's wrong? Don't tell me you broke one of Kiku's Vocaloid figurine collection again while cleaning and now begging me on covering for you when he gets back?"

Yao frowned at that accusing statement. It's not like he did it again. Well, not recently though. He knew how his brother gets pretty touchy with his collection. "As much as I want to make your day by saying yes but no, it's not that."

Lien raised an eyebrow. "So what is it?"

Yao turned his head to Maya's room before turning back to Lien who is waiting for Yao to explain things. Cautiously and softly, he asked his cousin to take the conversation to the kitchen. Lien agreed and they moved to the kitchen.

Once they entered into the kitchen, Yao began explaining his problem to Lien. The young lady didn't looked surprised after the explanation, rather she looked like she wanted to give someone a good smack with a paper fan. She sighed and muttered something in her mother tongue.

"Being the oldest among us, you sure are pretty dense." Lien deadpanned. "She misses her family, especially her parents. On a day like this, you would want to spend it with your family or friends right? Now do recall how Maya reacted after a phone call from her parents."

Yao thought about it. The day when Maya's parents called…Maya acted pretty strange after the call. She skipped dinner afterwards and locked herself in her room the whole time. Her appetite had somewhat been affected. He remembered he did asked what did her parents say, Maya simply said that they will be late coming for her due to a flight being delayed. Wait a minute, didn't they-

"Ah! You mean-!"

Lien sighed exasperatedly. "Exactly that. Now, Mr Wang Yao, do you get the problem?"

"Yes, yes, I got it aru. But how do we make things better for her?"

Lien shrugged. "I have no idea though I was planning on cooking some of her favourite dishes if she were to keep it up and hopefully, get her to video call with her parents while we celebrate together."

"Oh, that's not bad aru. Then we shall give it to her…a party she will never forget"

…..

A knock came at the door as Lien enters. She blinked at the sight of the young Malaysian girl curled up like a cocoon under the thick blanket of hers with a photograph in front of her. Looks like Yao wasn't just exaggerating on this situation.

"Maya," Lien called softly, shaking the big lump on the bed. A slight groan coming from Maya as she mumbled lazily "Not hungry"

"I know but how about a light snack? It's not good to go to bed with an empty stomach." Maya seems to hesitate before agreeing. She pushed herself out of bed and heads to the dining room with Lien walking behind her.

The sound of something popping greeted Maya as she enters the dining room, startling her for a moment before she could processed anything. She blinked before taking in the happy faces of the people she knew. However, what she did not expect was her own parents standing with these people, wearing normal clothes.

"Papa? Mama?" were the first words she uttered out.

Maya's mother nodded, giving her daughter an apologetic smile. "Yes, it's us Maya. Sorry for surprising you like this."

"But didn't you say your flight was delayed?" Maya asked.

Her father chuckled, feeling a little guilty as he explained. "Well, we wanted to surprise you so we kind of lied to you there. We let Yao and Kiku here know about our whereabouts and we asked them not to tell you anything. We're terribly sorry Maya for hiding from you."

Maya shook her head. "Nah, I'm just happy you made it!"

"She was pretty upset about it though." Lien added.

"Kak Lien!"

Maya's mother chuckled. "Now, now, let us welcome this New Year together and hope it will be better than the previous year."

A/N: I'm thinking of ending Fun dengan Malaysia soon. It may seem short but I cannot keep everyone hanging when I'm busy or too distracted with other stuff or too hook on another fandom. I am still in the Hetalia fandom…though not as much. I appreciate all of your reviews, favourites and follows my dear readers but as the author of this fanfic, I felt that I did not do this well. Although inspiration is everywhere, it is hard to filter it to a good few. This won't be the last chapter, this I can promise you. I can have a sequel up however I am not sure whether I am able to do so or not nor am I sure when I will end it however I hope you will continue to support this fanfic until the very end. Thank you very much. Terima Kasih.
