" are you sure you should be working in your, um, current state?" I asked, concern for my boss evident.

"Miss Violet, if I thought I should stay home I would stay home." she said dismissively. "Plus if anything were to happen I have you to help me." She said, a smile stretching across her face. I smiled back eyeing the doctor's swollen belly with concern. The doctor grabbed her clipboard and headed to the medicine cabinet. I finished stitching up the corpse and went to wash my hands.

"Have you and the Detective thought about what you will name your child?" I say trying to start a new conversation.

"We both agree that Lily is a nice name for a girl." she says putting down her clipboard on the counter and untying her apron. "As for boys we don't really-" She winces and places a hand on her stomach. "Know yet" she finishes.

"Doctor are you okay?" I ask concern taking over.

"No." she breathes, her knees collapsing beneath her. I run to support some of her weight. She groans taking deep breaths. "Dr. Ogden you should sit down." I say slowly helping her to her chair.

"Miss. Hart go call an ambulance. I'll be fine." she said. I turn to the phone, ready to place the call when Julia cries out in pain. I turn around abruptly to see Julia standing up. She was looking at the now wet chair.

"My water broke." she says turning toward me, panic taking over. I return my focus to the phone.

"Yes can you put a call in for an ambulance for the city morgue? Its an emergency, one of the Doctors went into labour." I hang up and rush over to Julia. She had moved to the side chair and was screaming in pain. I kneeled down next to her taking her hand.

"It will be okay. The ambulance is coming." I reassured her.

"Did you get William?" she breathed her voice barely audible from her pain.

"No" I said. She glared at me. "When the ambulance comes I will go get him." she nods. As if I summoned them two doctors run into the room with a stretcher. Julia lays down on the stretcher reluctantly. I see that she is safely in the carriage before hurrying of to the Station house.

Miss Violet runs into my office panting and out of breath "Miss Violet. What have you?" I ask letting her catch her breath.

"Detective, it's your wife. Sh- she went into labor. She should be at the hospital by now." she said sitting down in a chair to rest. I left her there to rest. I grab my coat and push my way to the entrance.

"Murdoch! Where do you think you're going?" The inspector yelled from his office.

"To the hospital! Julia went into labor!" I yell back when I reach the door. I head to the bike rack and jump on my bike, pedaling as hard as I can down Wilton street. My calves burn but adrenaline keeps me going.

"Move out of the way!" I yell at some people crossing the road. I reach the hospital and drop my bike at the entrance. I run past all the people and halt abruptly at the front desk.

"I need to know what room Julia Ogden is in. I'm her husband an-"

"she would be on the second floor." she said cutting me off. I nod my head and ran for the stairs, almost tripping on a woman's crutches. I run up the stairs taking them two at at a time. I reach the top and take a sharp left and sprint down the hall. I reach number fourteen and stop. I peer through the small window in the door. Julia is laying on a bed in a patient smock. One nurse holds her hand while another stays at the end of the bed. I flinch as she screams in pain. Taking a deep breath I open the door and enter.

Julia is breathing heavily and sweat and tears stain her face. She smiles and holds out her hand. "William. You came." she sighs with exhaustion. I take her hand push the hair out of her face.

"Of course I came." I said smiling. She smiles back.

"She refused to cooperate without you." the nurse holding her hand says. The nurse let go of her hand and went out into the hall. Julia screams again as a contraction rakes her body.

"I can see a head, you need to start pushing now." the nurse says.

"What do you think I've been doing?" Julia yells before another contraction makes her yell in agony.

"You are doing great Julia. One more push." I say encouraging her. She squeezes my hand and yells once more. Moments later a high pitched wail pierces the air. Julia smiles and loosened her grip. We both exhale and look at the nurse holding our child. She turns away from us and a doctor walks into the room. The doctor pays no attention to us keeping his face hidden.

"Excuse me." I say trying to get their attention. We watch them whisper, their voices barely audible over the child crying. Julia's smile fades when the doctor reaches for the baby.

"What are you doing?" she asks as the doctor walks away. "Where are you taking my child?" she yelled after him. She looks at me panic in her eyes.

"Nurse! Where are you taking our child?" I yell. She makes no acknowledgment of my question. The other nurse walks in and escorts me out of the room.

"What's going on?" I ask. Again the nurse is silent.

"William what's going on? Where are you going?" she yelled after me. I could not respond for the door to the room closed leaving me to watch helplessly through a window. Julia starts thrashing and screaming my name. The nurses put a hand cloth over her face and I watch her screams turn to sobs. I try frantically to open the door, but it wouldn't open.

"Julia!" I yell still twisting the handle. "Let me in!" I yell pounding on the door. Giving up I leave the door and start pacing trying to determine why these events were happening. Occasionally I would glance at the door for any sign that I could go in.

I must have been pacing for a while, or at least that's what it felt like, before a voice broke my concentration. A moment later the inspector appears at the top of the stairs.

"Congratulations!" he says holding out his hand. I shake it, pride and confidence suddenly returning, then leaving as fast as it came.

"Thank you sir."

"So how's the doctor?" he asks heading to the door.

"I don't know. They kicked me out after she gave birth. We don't even know the sex of the child." I say sitting down on a chair beside the door. The inspector sighs and pulls up another chair beside me. We sit in silence until a nurse walks by carrying a child. She stops in front of me.

"Are you the father?" she asks trying her best to be quiet.

"I am" I say standing up. The nurse unlocks the door and I rush to Julia's side. I nudge her awake.

"William. What's happening? Where's our child?" she asks. She turns and faces the nurse and calms down.

"Is that our child?" she asks tears in her eyes.

"Yes it is. It's a boy." she says handing Julia the baby. She sits upright on the bed and reaches for the baby. I wrap my arm around her shoulder and look at the baby. Julia and I look at each other and smile, tears in both our eyes.

"He needs a name." I say looking back at the baby.

"I like the name Thomas." she said looking at the child.

"Thomas it is then." I say looking back at Julia.

"Did someone say my name?" the inspector says walking into the room. He smiles and stops at the end of the bed.

"Oh inspector." I say laughing. He walks around to see Julia. I reach over and slowly take Thomas from Julia.

"So this is the wee bugger?" the inspector asked. Julia nods.

"His name is Thomas." Julia says looking over at me and the baby. "Aw he's named after a good bloke ain't he." the inspector said jokingly.

"He is, because he is named after you." Julia said with a smile. "I named him Thomas because when I married William it was you who walked me down the aisle." she said tears forming in her eyes again.

"I know he should be named after my father or William's" she continues, "But when I was convicted of Darcys murder you put your job on the line for me and put the real killer to justice. To me you are as close to a father as one could hope for." I pass Thomas to the inspector, who also is crying, though he tried his best to hide it. I look at Julia who has the biggest smile I have ever seen on her. I lean forward and kiss her.

Thomas starts crying again so me and the inspector leave the room to let Julia feed him. The nurse is waiting outside the room fear barely showing in her eyes.

"Why was it the doctor left with Thomas?" I ask her. She looks around her then talks.

"He wanted to keep the child" she started.

"Said he was going to give it to his wife as a gift because she can't have one." her voice was full of fear at this point. "Said anyone who stopped him would pay. I brought him back because I didn't trust him. He just joined a little over a month ago and he was already taking control of the establishment." she stopped to catch her breath.

"What is his name ma'am?" I ask.

"He said his name is Garland, L-"

"Leslie Garland" I finished.I look at the inspector who nodded.

"Thank you for telling us, and for returning our son. The inspector will escort you to the station for further questions." I say. "I should stay for awhile, just to.."

"Murdoch I understand. Go be with your family." the inspector interrupts. I nod and re enter the room. I look at Julia who is smiling down at Thomas while he eats. A nurse left a chair for me to sit on beside the bed. As I take a seat Julia looks at me concern and fear returning once more.

"William, who was that doctor? Why did he want our son?" she asked. I sigh and take her hand.

"Julia, the doctor who took our son was Leslie Garland." Julia looked at me, astonished at what I just said. She looks back at Thomas holding him closer to her.

"Julia I-"

"If he comes anywhere near our son, I'll kill him." Julia interrupts looking back at with fear and anger in her voice.

"Isn't that a little drastic?" I say shifting from the chair to the bed.

"First he pretended to be James Gillies to scare us and now this? How did he even get out of jail William?" She stated. She breathed trying to control her temper. "I want him hanged William." she said turning to face me, tears rolling down her face. "After all he's done to us, to our family" she paused for a moment to see to Thomas who had started to whimper. "I want him gone. Somewhere where he will never get to us again." she whispered.

"I do to Julia believe me, I do. But for now we have more important things to worry about." I reach over and stroke Thomas's head.

"Can you hold him for a minute?" Julia asks. I nod carefully taking Thomas from Julia. As I look down at his small face, so small and innocent, everything that just happened seemed to disappear. I look over at Julia who's expression matched mine. I smile tears forming in my eyes.

"We still have to decide who the godparents will be." Julia said.
