Thomas had started to cry so I stood up and started to walk around with him.
"Well who did you have in mind Julia?" I ask.
"Oh William, give him here." Julia says outstretching her arms to grab Thomas. Reluctantly I give her Thomas. Only once Thomas was secured in her arms and had settled down did she answer my question.
"Well I was thinking that since we named him after the Inspector, we should make George the godfather." she said keeping her gaze fixed on Thomas.
"I think that is a great idea, but are you sure? I mean he is a great man and an excellent cop but will he be a good role model to Thomas?" I ask. She waits a minute, moving Thomas's blanket away from his face.
"Julia I was kidding. It's not like we are saying Higgins should be the godfather." I laughed.
"Right?" I looked at her expecting her to be laughing at my joke. Instead she had that look were she thinking about something.
"Actually that's not a bad idea." she said. Sadly she could not contain her laughter long enough to convince me. I sat down on the bed beside Julia and held my finger out for Thomas to grasp.
"We did it." I whispered in Julia's ear. I kiss her cheek and continue to admire Thomas.
We must have sat like that for hours before a knock on the door disturbed the peace. A nurse appeared in the doorway.
"Excuse the interruption, but you have a guest." she says stepping to the side. Miss Hart appears in the doorway behind the nurse. I stand up and motion for her to come in. She walks in quietly as I if she was scared to wake the baby. I move to the side to let her talk to Julia.
"It's beautiful." she says after a few moments. Without saying a word Julia hands Thomas to Miss. Hart. As she holds him she starts to cry.
"I'm sorry." she says giving Thomas back to Julia.
"There is no need to be sorry" Julia starts. "You helped me get here safely. You made sure I was careful at work. You are one of the reasons he is in the world today." she continues tears rolling down her cheeks. The nurse re- enters the room with a wheelchair.
"Ma'am you should go outside for a bit while there is still light." she says moving closer to the bed.
"Yes that is a good idea. Thomas could use the sunshine." I say helping Julia into the chair.
"As could you." I add avoiding her glare.
"Miss. Hart would you accompany me outside?" Julia asks as Thomas starts to wail. She nods and follows Julia and the nurse out of the room. I follow grabbing my coat on the way out.
We reach the courtyard and stopped right in the middle of the grass. Julia and Miss. Hart were talking about work and the progress of Miss. Violets education how Thomas was faring. I turn to the nurse.
"How long do you think it will be before she can come home?"
"Well we still need to run some tests, make sure the baby is in good health. After we will examine your wife and make sure she is fine." she says. I nod glancing back at Julia.
"From the looks of it she should only be here for the night." The nurse looks at me for a second then continues.
"Detective as much as it pains me I will have to take the babe away from Mrs. Murdoch while we run some of the examinations." We both look back at Julia this time.
"You do know that our child is being targeted for abduction. Julia will never let him out of her sight for anything." I reply.
"I am well aware of the safety issues applying to the child and the mother-"
"So you know that she will demand to be with you the whole time." I interject.
The nurse inhales and turns toward me.
"If needed we will have to sedate her." I nod again fully understanding the situation at hand. I hoped Julia's stubbornness will not get her into trouble. I thanked the nurse and walked over to Julia and .
"Julia I have to go to work. The nurse has to examine you and Thomas so I want you to co-operate alright?"
"William when I have not behaved with other doctors?" she said smiling. I could name a few off the top my head but I just smiled back and kissed her cheek.
"Oh and William bring the pram when you come back." I nod and caress her cheek. She was still flushed from the trauma. Before I leave I cradle Thomas's head in my hand. He was so small, so beautiful.
