I remember when the thought of having children seemed impossible. But here I am, holding the most precious child in the world. Miss. Violet referred to him as a miracle child, and I don't think I've agreed more to anything. Sitting here holding Thomas feels like a dream. I remember working with Marilyn Clark who had discovered a hormone treatment. It gave me such urgency, I think William was somewhat scared for me when it started happening. When I found out I was pregnant, I believe I worried everyone at the station with my morning sickness.

"He was stabbed between the left and right aorta. Death would have been instant." I said pointing to the wound. I struggled to concentrate, breathing deeply to choke down my nausea.

"Do you have any idea what the weapon was?" the inspector asked me.

I took a minute to process what he had asked me. My stomach churned, and I had to excuse myself.

"Could you excuse me for moment?" I ask placing a hand on my stomach. He nods and I run off to the water closet. It wasn't the first time this had happened. In fact this must have happened every day for at least three weeks. I straighten up and head back to the inspector. "Sorry about that inspector. As for the weapon I suspect the blade would be approximately three inches long with a serrated edge. Death occurred between eight and nine pm last night."

"Thank you Doctor." the inspector said grabbing his hat and walking to the door. "Doctor Ogden, are you alright?"

"Yes, of course inspector."

He nods and walks out of the morgue.

"Mrs. Murdoch? It's time for your sons examination." a nurse says. I nod and give her Thomas. Another nurse comes and pushes me in the wheelchair behind them. We head to the first floor and the nurse with Thomas heads into a room. Another mother waits outside, presumably waiting for her baby to finish the examination. She looks up and smiles. I turn around and see a doctor walking out with a baby. The woman reaches and grabs her child. It was whimpering, but the sound of its mother voice calms it down.

"Is it a boy or girl?" I ask trying to be friendly.

"Girl. Her name is Rose."

"That's a lovely name."

"What about your babe?"

I smile "His name is Thomas."

"Is he your first child?" she asks smoothing the blanket.

"Yes, he is."

A nurse whispers into her ear and she nods. "You must be very happy then." she replies. "Yes we are very happy, but it just doesn't feel right." I sigh.

Her expression changed to concern at these words.

"What do you mean?"

"Someone is trying to kidnap my son." I say tears forming in my eyes. "I fear that I will never be able to protect him."

She stands up and places her arm around me. "You will be a great mother, don't doubt it ever. When I had my first child I thought I would fail her, but now she is in school and I have never been more proud."

I nod and wipe my eyes. "Thank you miss."

"Call me Molly, Molly McRae, and you are?"

"Where are my manners? Dr. Julia Ogden, city coroner." I say holding out my hand. She shakes it.

"Doctor eh? Your Thomas will be a curious one." We laugh until the door opens and the doctor walks out. He hands me Thomas and I hold him close, his little fists grasp at my breasts. The doctor then hands me a file and leaves.

"Hes beautiful." Molly says. I smile, pride swelling in my chest.

"Mrs. Murdoch it's time you went for your appointment." the nurse says.

"Well I guess I'm off then." I say to Molly.

"Yes, well, I guess I'll see you around Dr. Ogden."

"Please, call me Julia." I smile.

The nurse pushes me away to my room as Thomas starts to cry. We took the elevator to the second floor. By the time we reached our room Thomas was in a fit, waving his little fists around and screaming at the top of his lungs. The nurse hands me a towel and I slip the top of my smock down. Once Thomas started making slight suckling noises the nurse went and prepared the bassinet.

"Excuse me, do you think it would be possible for someone to guard Thomas? A known felon is after him and I can't lose him." The nurse nods.

"If you want we can summon a constable for you. We can't let a villain take a newborn. Our establishment is hanging on threads as it is." she says with a smile. I exhale relief flooding my body.

"You can call my husband, Detective Murdoch of station house four." I said to her. I just hope William will send Crabtree. The nurse leaves and I am left alone in the room with Thomas. He has finished eating was sleeping in my arms. I smooth the blanket and whisper his name to him.

"Mommy is going to have an appointment, so I need you to be brave. Alright?" I say to Thomas. The nurse returns and puts Thomas into the bassinet.

"Ma'am constable Crabtree is here to watch Thomas while your gone." she says as constable Crabtree tips his helmet and takes his position beside Thomas.

"Hello George." I say as the nurse wheels me out of the room. I take a final glance at the bassinet before the nurse closes the door behind her.
