"Higgins!" I yell from my office. To my surprise Crabtree pokes his head into my office. "Sir?" he asks.

"Where's Higgins?" I asked him.

"He went with detective Murdoch. They're at the hospital now."

"Ahh."

"What can I do for you sir?"

I leaned against my desk and motioned for the constable to take a seat.

"Answer me this crabtree, where else would Leslie Garland go?"

"I don't follow."

"He isn't at the hospital, nor was he at the hotel. Where else would he go?"

We sit in silence for a few moments neither of us could come up with a reasonable answer, until Crabtree sat up in his chair.

"Sir, I think I got it. Perhaps he took up residence in his brothers old house." he said standing up.

"Perhaps. Didn't they sell the house?" I asked.

"They did but he could have been hired as a butler, or gardener in exchange for shelter." I nod and stand up straight.

"Have a look into the people who bought the house. See if they knew the Garlands in anyway." He nods and leaves the room. I move away from the desk and pour myself a scotch. I down it quickly and start to pour myself another. I had been drinking a lot lately. "Perhaps I better not." I whisper to myself. I put the pitcher back into the tray and walk over to the couch in my office. I lay down and close my eyes. Nothing was adding up. He had to be doing this for someone, a second party. Why else would he steal a child? They weren't exactly a walk in the park, especially babies. I lay there, listening to the sounds of the station house for a while before slowly drifting off to sleep.

I thought I closed my eyes for a moment but it must have been longer. I was awoken by the sound of Crabtree knocking on my door. He invited himself in and waited by my desk. I sat up, straightened my shirt and rubbed my eyes. "What have you constable?" I ask.

"Sir, I went through the files at city records and found that the house had been sold to a mister and missus Wexford. I checked the Garland files and found that the Wexfords and the Garlands had nothing to do with each other."

"Damn it. I thought we had him."

"Sir thats not all I found. Apparently the Wexfords hired a gardner about four months ago. Around the time Leslie Garland booked the hotel room."

"Have you interviewed the Wexfords yet?"

"Yes Higgins did, he said that the gardener had recently asked if he could stay with them only to disappear about two weeks ago."

I sighed. He knew what he was doing. "Anything else?" I asked in dismay.

"Yes apparently he would often bring female company to the residence. They described her as dark skinned with dark brown hair. They wife added that in her opinion she looked to proper to be a prostitute." he concluded closing his notebook and putting it in his pocket.

"Thank you Crabtree." I said dismissing him.

"Oh and one more thing, Higgins said that the detective was going to stay at the hospital for the night with Julia and little Thomas."

"Alright then. See about this lady Leslie was seeing."

He nods "I will, in the morning."

"What? What time is it?"

"About eleven thirty."

"Bloody hell." I say running for my coat. "The missus must be worried sick." I say to myself. "Crabtree see yourself out." I say walking out the door. I run out the front of the station house and flag down a passing carriage. I tell the driver my address as I close the door.

I tip the driver and walk up to the front door. I slowly open the door and enter careful not to disturb Margaret and the boys. I hung up my coat and tiptoed into the den. There was no fire in the fireplace and the lights were out. Margaret must have gone to bed a while ago. I turned back to the staircase and carefully headed to my room. I took off my shoes and changed into my sleeping gown. I crawled into bed beside Margaret and slowly drifted off to sleep.

I finished feeding Thomas and proceeded to burp him. I struggled to keep my eyes open but I knew that this had to be done otherwise he would keep crying. He was still whimpering and my rocking didn't seem to be working. I thought back to when we adopted Roland. He did the same thing. What did I do to calm him? I started to hum a song I heard a woman singing to her child in the park. After a while his whimpers stopped and fell asleep. I put him in his bassinet and layed down beside William who was sound asleep. I rolled my eyes. He was always sleeping at the worst of times. I layed there looking at him until he slowly opened his eyes.

"What time is it?" he asked drowsily.

"Midnight. Thomas is sound asleep." I whispered.

"Good. Get some sleep Julia, alright?" he yawned

"I will." I said resting my head on Williams chest. I fell asleep to the rise and fall of Williams sleeping chest and the gentle snores of Thomas in his bassinet.

I woke up to the sound of William soothing Thomas. Light was streaming in through the small window behind the bed, illuminating the top of Williams head. I rubbed my eyes and sat up.

"Good morning Julia." he said looking over at me. I smiled. I never thought I would see the day when I woke up to William holding our child.

"Good morning William." I said standing up. I walked behind William and wrapped my arms around his shoulders. "Good morning little Thomas." I said trailing my finger from his forehead to his nose.

"How did you sleep?" William asked.

"Good. Did Thomas wake up after I fed him?"

"Nope not till about an hour ago." he said handing him to me.

"Good. Clearly he inherited his sleeping habits from you." I teased.

"It's still to early to tell. For all we know he could snore like you." he retorted. I rolled my eyes. "You should get ready for work. Leslie Garland is still out there." I said.

"I will once I help you pack up. The doctors said you and Thomas could leave today." William said. I put Thomas back into the bassinet.

"I'll go change then." I said grabbing my outfit from yesterday. There was a folding screen on the other side of the room and I decided that it would be a good place to change. I changed quickly but didn't bother to fix my hair. Folded the smock and left it on the bed. There wasn't much to pack, a blanket and a few nappies for Thomas. I helped William pack then picked up thomas and headed for the door.
