Ariel was always a little wary around duplicates of herself; Ursula had made herself into a near copy of her to steal Eric, and the original version of herself had such a sad fate. This time though, her worries seemed unwarranted. This visitor with her face was sitting peacefully on the couch with her, a fussing baby in her arms.
Her counterpart was young, her early twenties at most. She dressed in a purple top, darker purple jacket, dark green skirt and elegant blue boots. A golden chain hung around her neck, with a crown shaped pendant of the same color dangling from it. Her small baby, dressed in a Moogle-like playsuit, babbled as he grasped it with his chubby fingers and tried to pull it into his mouth. The other Ariel laughed gently, and tugged the pendant out of her son's reach. She then looked up at Ariel with an apologetic smile.
"Sorry" she said. "He figured out how his arms work."
"It's all right. I remember when Melody was the same way," Ariel said with a soft laugh. She scooted over and gazed into the face of the little baby, who giggled at seeing an older version of his mother.
"What's his name?" Ariel asked, stroking the top of the baby's head. He had her red hair, albeit spikier, but his blue eyes were definitely not hers.
"Kaito. I wanted to name him Axel, but Sora didn't want him to live up to any expectations in the name," the other Ariel said. She chuckled as Kaito managed to grasp the Moogle bobble on top of his hood, and brought it down to suck on. "Besides, it would only make Axel smug in the afterlife."
"I suppose so," Ariel agreed, studying the face of the tiny baby. "So how did it... You know..."
"How did Sora and I get together?" The other Ariel asked. "It really wasn't too complicated. Right after defeating Ursula for the first time..."
"Look, you need all the help you can get and I know about other worlds anyway! Take me with you!" Ariel demanded. Donald crossed his arms with a scowl.
"This isn't a pleasure cruise! We're gonna be in danger and-"
"And I can take care of myself! And you!" Ariel insisted. "Please?"
Donald winced at the puppy dog eyes Ariel was giving him. He looked over at Goofy and Sora, hoping for some support... But he just got the same look on their faces. "ARRGHHH! Fine! She can come!" Donald grumbled. "But no more strays!"
"YEAH!" They all cheered.
"I just had to do that to go with them?" Ariel asked in disbelief.
The other Ariel shrugged. "Well, to be fair I also said it would make Father mad. And they were all for that after putting up with him."
"You two did make up though, right?" Ariel asked her counterpart. The other Ariel nodded, gently rocking Kaito when he fussed.
"Yes... Though it did involve the fate of the world hanging in the balance."
Ariel rolled her eyes. "What else is new?"
Kairi didn't know what to think when Sora told her about the other Ariel. The one from another universe. The one that universe's Sora had fallen in love with, married, and had a child with.
Words just did not seem adequate to relate her feelings. Her heart itself had bonded with Sora' s. He had fought across the multiverse, twice, just to find Her! That kind of feeling was so strong and deep, maybe she would never find the words for it.
Maybe that is the problem, part of her whispered. Maybe the fact you can't talk about it means nothing will happen. Nothing will change.
Would she always be the untouchable Princess? Would they never find the words? And so would Sora find someone who could put their feelings into mortal, concrete action? Bound together heart to heart seemed the most romantic thing imaginable... And yet so beyond human understanding it didn't fit.
All of these thoughts swirled in her mind as she nodded and made mindless small talk with the other Ariel. She felt like she wasn't really there, and she wondered what else was just an illusion...
Until the other Ariel asked, " Would you like to hold him?"
"Ah?" Her arms extended automatically, and the other Ariel gently placed her son in Kairi's embrace. She held the tiny baby carefully, as her mother had taught her to hold infants. She looked into little Kaito's eyes. The baby boy stared back, his gaze wide, innocent, and curious.
Then he giggled, and reached out to Kairi's hand. She took it, and smiled down as the boy grasped her fingers.
"Hello," she whispered to the other Sora's son. Sora's baby... Who, ignorant of her troubles, beamed at her in joy and wonder. Whose tiny heart felt so strong...
She looked up at Sora. Her Sora, who was smiling at them. A soft expression was in his eyes, locked onto her. Kairi flushed, and smiled back. She played with her hair a bit, making Sora blush back.
Maybe it wasn't as hard to put to words as she feared. Maybe they didn't need them at all...
