Chapter 6

If there was one thing that she could appreciate from the Twilight series, it was the accurate descriptions of both the characters personalities and the setting. Stephanie Meyer was spot on when she described how green Forks is and Bella was spot on when she mentioned how awkward the car ride to Charlie's was. Although, Leah has some appreciation for the man from the four and a half hours she has known him, she could see why Bella had a hard time connecting with the man. If you discount all of the supernatural drama, Charlie was a man of few words and was terrible at showing emotion. If Leah didn't have a virtual strategy guide on the universe she was chucked into and its characters, she might have thought that Charlie pegged her as a dangerous wild animal, to be treated with caution and distance. Either that or he was secretly a robot, which actually might be true. With the many impossible and improbable things, she has witnessed, in this life and the last, she honestly would not be surprised.

Turning her head away from the view of the many green trees, she turned to Charlie and observed him. Everything that she knew about him was from the books and the few scenes from the movie. Even with the short interactions she has had with him herself, she couldn't gauge the type of man he is and that could be dangerous. From the books, she knows that he is the Chief of Police of Forks, but other than that she doesn't know much about his job. Leah doesn't know if he is as observant as he seemed in Breaking Dawn, or if he is purposely oblivious to all the supernatural crap in the series. If that is the case, how is she going to hide just how different from his daughter that she is. That is not including how he will take her being a lesbian, Leah knows some people who were kicked out of their homes for being gay. Leah would be screwed if that happened, she doesn't know anything about Forks.

Leah has never lived anywhere near the East Coast before. Leah has only ever lived in three places all of her life, New Orleans, Texas and South Carolina; all of which are amongst the South Coast. Leah wouldn't know the laws of the area, what the requirement for emancipation or the schooling requirements are. Each state and region are different and if Charlie kicked her out, she would have to learn fast what she needs to know how to survive on her own. That is something that she really doesn't need right now... or ever! Especially on top of the other crap she has to deal with.

Leah still hasn't dealt with Sara's death yet, that dream was a short respite at best. Leah can still feel the loss as keenly as she did when it happened. The fact of the matter is, she doesn't believe she will ever get over her death. Although, she knows logically that she will eventually move on from it, she knows it won't be for a while. If she could just talk to someone about it, it might help. But who can she talk to? There is nobody from her world for her to talk to, the only people she has met from this world are Charlie, Renee' and Phil. Even then, she doesn't know them very well enough to even begin talking about something so big. Besides even if she did trust them enough to talk, what would she say? "Hi, my name is Leah, I know I look like your daughter, but that's because I died and took over your daughter's body. Oh, and did I forget to mention that in my world you are all fictional characters from a book and movie franchise, one that I really hate?" Yeah, that is a conversation that would go well, not!

With all of that in mind, Leah decided that she will need to look into the emancipation laws of Washington and anything else that is pertinent to learn to live on her own. Once she has a plan in place and is comfortable enough with him, she will inform Charlie of her sexuality. In the meantime, she thought, giving Charlie one more once over before looking back out of the window, mind as well get to know dear old dad a bit.

Charlie had indeed realized that his daughter was watching him, studying him really. The stare was intense enough, that you would have to be especially blind to miss that look. Though, why she was so troubled and why she was studying him so intently, he didn't know, and he didn't ask. If she wanted him to know, she would tell him, she will tell him when she is ready. But while he left her to her thoughts, he thought about his own troubles. Though he is happy that his daughter will be living with him for the foreseeable future, he just now realized that living with his troubled teenage daughter will be a challenge.

Though she doesn't seem like it, Charlie is a cop and more important than that he is a father, which means he knows that his daughter is troubled. What he doesn't know is, what is it that troubles her so? When she spoke of her friend, he noticed the fondness and sadness in her voice. Charlie figured out that this friend is dead, but he couldn't remember Bella ever mentioning a friend that she would love so much that it affected her so deeply. Charlie doesn't know if this friend is a boy or a girl, if it was a recent loss or if it happened a while ago but still affects her. It was this trail of thought that made him realize just how little he knows of his only child. The thought that he is so out of touch with his only child that he doesn't even know if she has any friends and was surprised to hear about this one, saddened him.

Charlie resolved to become more involved in his daughter's life from now on. He knows that it will be tough, with his job not only are the hours long, but there is always a chance that he could either be hurt or killed in the line of duty. But what is life without risks right? If Charlie let's that stop him with connecting with his child, then he is not fit to be called a father. There is also Bella to consider, she seems a little anti-social and slow to trust. That will make getting to know her difficult, add in Charlie's own social issues and it seems impossible. But damned if he won't try.

"So, how have you been?" Bella's quiet voice interrupted the silence of the car, jolting Charlie out of his own thoughts. Giving her a quick glance, Charlie returned his eyes to the road as he replied. "I've been good. You?" Charlie's reply was short and set the tone for their talk. To her credit, Leah tried, she brought up how excited she was to get a new start and spend time with him at the same time. The one thing she is most grateful for is that she can lie so well that no one would ever know otherwise. From what she has read about Bella Swan, she is a terrible liar, that is one of the good things Leah has brought over from her previous life, her ability to lie. Thankfully, she fooled Charlie because then he brought up her hair cut again like in cannon. But as soon as he mentioned the hair, she was done with him. Leah hates the hair that this body has, she plans on not only returning her hair to the style and color from her previous life, but as soon as possible. But poor Charlie doesn't need to know about that yet, just like he doesn't need to hear about her woes of how she can't see herself being happy here. What he doesn't know won't hurt him.

Finally, they arrived at Charlie's house and what seems like for the foreseeable future her house as well. The house was an exact replica of the movies, complete with the tree that Edward used to sneak into her room. As she inspected the tree next to her window, she wondered how she could convince Charlie to have it cut down without sounding like a paranoid freak. With a shrug, she decided to add that to her list of things to do as well. The only thing that she could see that was not cannon was that the 'thing' was not there. In fact, there was no car at all, this made her both surprised and wary. Leah assumed that the universe she was in was set in stone as cannon. Leah could expect that Charlie wouldn't look like Billy Burke, that is a little change and lead her to believe that she was in the book verse instead of the movie verse. But the red truck was in both the movie and books and was important to Bella. If something that was in both versions of Twilight and was something so special to Bella isn't there, then something is wrong.

Just what the hell is going on here? Leah thought incredulously as she stared at the empty driveway as Charlie parked in the space she was used to belonging to an obnoxiously red ugly truck. Seeing the look of surprise on Bella's face, Charlie thought she must be surprised about how nothing has changed concerning the house. It has been years since Bella has last been here, so Charlie could understand the surprise of there being no change. But with the absolute flabbergasted look on her face seemed a bit much. With a shrug, he shrugged it off to a quirk of her to be excessively expressive in the face of change and proceeded to get her bags from the truck. When Charlie left the truck to get her bags, Leah shook herself out of her shock. Seeing that change to the story had shaken her. If something that small yet important is different, she wondered what else is different. Does she have Bella's shield? Are the Cullen's powers the same as cannon? Then Leah had a truly horrifying thought, are the Cullen's even vegetarians in this universe or are they human drinkers instead and will they kill her?

"Bells? Are you coming?" Charlie's confused voice roused her from her horrifying thoughts. Hearing the name Charlie used, she released an imperceptible sigh of agitation. Leah knows she can't expect Charlie to immediately call her by her preferred name, but oh how she hates being called Bella! Leah hates this whole goddamned situation, really. But she can't blame Charlie, the poor man just lost his daughter whether he realized it or not. But mark her words she will get him into the habit of calling her Ruža or even the English translation because damnit she will not spend however long she is here answering to that meek twit's name! Releasing a huff, she got out of the car, ignoring Charlie's apologetic glance as he realized his faux paus, and headed upstairs to where she knew her room would be.

Luckily, since the outside of the house is the same, she surmised that everything else would be. Imagine her surprise then, to find the room is not at all like Stephanie Meyers description in the books or the movie. In fact, her room is smaller than the movie and book and is of all horrors-pink! Everywhere! There is pink wallpaper with what looked like butterflies, all the furniture in the room is white pine, the comforters are pink, the rug is periwinkle! The only thing in the room not pink or white is the rocking chair in the corner and that is Cherrywood Oak, though the chair itself looks rickety and on its last legs.

Leah let loose a whimper at the horrifying room she is forced to call hers, as Charlie was beaming at all the hard work he did on the room. Turning to look at Bella's face to see her reaction to the room, Leah's face was as happy as she could look without showing her true disgust for the room show. Leah really should get an Oscar's for her performance. But even as she saw how happy Charlie was for her like of his decorating, she silently vowed to buy new...everything, redecorate and burn all of this pink crap. The thought of setting it all on fire, made the smile she wore for Charlie look more real. I am a terrible person, Leah concluded as a proud as a peacock Charlie left the room to let her unpack. Instead of unpacking, she tossed her bags into the closet and plopped on the bed. As she got a look at the ceiling though, she turned her head into the nearest pillow and screamed into it.

It seemed silly, but seeing the pink smiling stars plastered on the ceiling seemed to be the last straw for her. Leah has put up with a lot so far in twenty-four hours. In twenty-four hours she has got into a fight with her girlfriend about the damned Twilight series, got into a car accident, watched her girlfriend die, died herself, woke up in another universe, woke up in someone else's body and in someone else's life. To say that she isn't impressed or pleased to wake up in the body of the protagonist in the series that contributed to her death, is an understatement. The irony is not missed either, her and Sarah's last fight was about the Twilight series, they were headed to a book signing of said series and were killed because of it and now she is living in it. To say she is not amused would be an understatement. But it was the goddamned starfish ceiling that did her stress levels in. It makes no sense, but at this point she is surprised that she hasn't cracked sooner.

Sometime between the screaming into her pillow and crying as she thought of all that she has lost and what brought her to this point, she fell asleep. An hour later, when Charlie came to get her for dinner, he found her cuddled into her pillow with her back to him, fast asleep. Deciding to let her rest, he turned away from her and was about to leave the room when he paused. Turning back, he quietly walked over to her and put the quilt that was at the end of the bed over her, she didn't even stir. Eyes softening as he took in how peaceful she looked, he bent over and kissed her on the head and left her alone.

Charlie just hoped that the next time he tucked her in, he won't see any more tearstains on her cheeks and instead will see a smile.

Author notes:

I hope you enjoyed the chapter!

I know it doesn't seem like it, but this chapter is an important character development point for both Leah and Charlie. I want to show how at this point even though Charlie is a stranger to Leah, so she is being cautious and already planning ahead in case the worst comes to worse and she has to leave him. This is important for the future, because without spoiling anything you will see that this is not how she usually operates. As for Charlie, he realizes that he doesn't really know his daughter as well as he should, and this will be a blessing for Leah, but it is going to bite Charlie in the ass on more than one occasion.

I also wanted to make this universe different from cannon Twilight in little ways. I have read numerous Self-Inserts that have changes to cannon or none at all and I haven't read one yet where there is an absence of Bella's beloved truck. I figured that would be the biggest indicator that something is wrong here. I needed to keep building the stress for Leah so that she could eventually crack sooner rather than later. If you hadn't noticed, Leah is an incredibly strong character, to have gone through so much in 24 hours and I needed to give her the push to break. It seemed the dreaded starfish was the best I could do. Don't worry things will get better for her, now that she has at least cried and screamed, she can move through the next phases of the stages of grief and proceed to screw with cannon.

The next chapter we will meet the Blacks, and the Cullen's.

Now enough of that! Onto answering the latest review comments and questions! From recent to oldest:

Child of Dreams: If you are asking if I would pair Leah with Edward, Alice & Jacob, then the answer is no. Leah is a lesbian and the boys aren't in the running and Alice isn't either because with the kind of woman Leah is, she would sooner or later try to kill her than love her. Alice is too hyper and just generally too much for Leah to even begin to try to handle. If you are asking if I will be bashing them, yes. I will try not to bash them too much, but I will be calling them out on their faults and they will be at least lightly bashed. If you are asking if they will be friends, maybe. Alice will be eventually, but I don't know about Edward and Jacob yet.

Child of Dreams: Leah's last name was McCarty. Her full name was Leah, Rose McCarty.

Marlastiano: I am glad you like it! 😊
