Disclaimer: I do not own either the characters from the movie Balto or the novel series The Wings of Fire, only the story. Balto and the characters of the franchise belongs to Universal Studios and The Wings of Fire belongs to Tui T. Sutherland.. I apologize for any errors in grammar and/or if I was not accurate in reference to something.

A/N: I will always ship these two together. After all, they are a perfect match. And for the sake of the story, Peril will not have her fire scales in this little story.

Clay and Peril's Northern Lights

PerilJenna

It was a cold night in the town of Sanctuary, deep within the continent of Pyrrhia. Winter had rolled in not too long ago, and quite harshly at that as well. The sun was starting to set in the west and Peril, a red Skywing, stood outside the Sanctuary Healers Hut. She saw a bunch of sick creatures, Dragons and scavengers alike. Peril felt her heart breaking from seeing them all like this. She could only watch in sadness as some of the patients started coughing or were trying to sleep off their illness.

As night time came over the city, a brown Mudwing named Clay came walking through the town of Sanctuary. He had learned from another dragon that Peril was here. But as he came around a corner he saw Peril standing at the window and looked down at a puddle of water. He saw a brown spot on his cheek and thought it to be mud. He tried to brush it off with his talons. But when he stopped it still seemed to be there. With a small growl he vigorously tried to get it off again but ended up with the same results. He then noticed that it was only his scales. Deciding to just leave it alone, Clay looked away from the puddle and walked over to Peril.

Peril was still looking in the window when Clay walked up behind her. Clay then tried to get her attention, "Peril?"

When she didn't seem to hear him, Clay cleared his throat to make himself known. This time she heard him and looked back as he said, "Uh, Peril."

"Oh, Clay." She said before looking back into the window with a, "Hi."

"Hi." Clay returned with a slight grin. Then looking about the Mudwing then tried to ask, "Look, uh… this is just a small shot in the dark…" He shook his head as he tried to search for the right words, "but I-I was wondering if, uh- I don't know, maybe you'd like to go grab a bite or something."

Clay looked to Peril with a grin, but his face fell when she didn't seem to hear his question. He noticed that she was looking a little sad and he moved next to her and ask, "Peril?"

"Just look at all the poor creatures in there. Dragons and scavengers alike." Peril shook her head and they both looked into the window. Clay seemed a little heartbroken as well and said, "I've been hearing that whatever they have isn't good."

They watched as some of the patients were having their temperatures taken, got into a coughing fit or whatever was ailing or being done to help them get through this. Peril sighed and hung her head, making Clay look to her. She looked to him and asked, "Clay, what do you think is wrong?"

"Hm. I'm not sure." Clay shook his head, puzzled about what was going on. But then an idea came to him and he waved for her to follow with his talons, "But I do know how we can find out. Come on."

Clay walked away from the window and Peril took once more glance to those inside before following after her friend. They came up to a storm drain. Clay looked to her with a small grin, "I have the keys to the city."

Clay wrapped his talons on the storm drain and used his great strength to lift it up. The Skywing was looking a little impressed and he moved the grate. He moved over and acted like a gentleman when he motioned for Peril to first, "After you."

"Thanks." Peril said with a grin before climbing down the storm drain. Clay looked about and saw that there was no one around. He jumped in after Peril and landed beside her. They looked about the dragon made tunnels and Clay looked to Peril and said, "Stay close."

Peril gave a small laugh as they started walking. Then she reassured him by saying, "No problem there."

She looked about the tunnels and thought that it was a little creepy down here. As they kept going, Clay made right turn and Peril asked, "Are you sure that you know where you're going down here?" She tried to sound brave when she came around the corner, "Not that I'm afraid of this place."

But she gasped in fright when she had nearly walked into a really large spider web. Clay glanced back to her and said, "Don't worry, Peril. I've been down here a few times. And I know my way around."

He used his thicker tail to knock the web down and said, "We'll figure out what's going on with the sick, and we'll even have time to visit one of the most beautiful spots in the world."

They came to a spot that seemed to be under the Healing Hut, judging from the sounds of coughing from above. There were many grates above them and Clay walked over to the one in the middle. Peril didn't think this place beautiful when she looked to Clay and said, "I don't see anything beautiful down here, Clay."

"That's because you're looking at the bowl half empty."

"Um?" Peril said as she didn't understand. Clay walked over to the grate and was standing on a small hill. He pointed down to the ground and she looked to see a cluster of dragon-sized broken bottles at his feet. She gave him a question look and he said, "See these? They're the ice caps in the Ice Kingdom."

"Clay, those are just a bunch of broken bottles." Peril pointed out to him, not very amused by what he was doing, "And they're not half empty, they're all empty."

But it didn't stop Clay was he only smiled at her. The Mudwing looked up and saw a lantern above the grate. He motioned to it and said, "The sun."

"Uh, Clay." Peril shook her head, not in the mood for games and started to turn back to leave. Clay then looked in a certain direction, "And… to the north."

When he moved out of the way of lantern's way, the light from it shone down on the bottle pieces and it suddenly brightened up the room. Peril gasped at the sight, "It guess it would be like this in the Ice Kingdom." Clay walked up to her and she said, "It's like some kind of Northern Lights.

"Wow." Peril said and smiled at the beauty as the lights danced around. She looked to Clay and said, "Oh, Clay, you were right. It's so beautiful."

But Clay was only looking at Peril and he said with a smile, "Yeah, beautiful."

This caused Peril to look away from the lights and into the Mudwing's eyes. Clay's smile dropped as he found himself lost in the Skywing's as well. The Mudwing and the Skywing started leaning forward as if about to kiss. But the sudden sound of claws against the floor and someone moving in front of the lantern made them look away.

Author's Note: I plan to have the Clay vs story akin to this up soon. As for the other couples from Wings of Fire, I shall do those at a later time. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
