I know how to make her laugh
Or blush, or mad at me
But that's OK there ain't no one
More beautiful angry
And she loves just as deep
As she goes when she's down
The highs match the lows
Can't have one without the other
And I love her just the way
God made her
Sunshine mixed with
A little hurricane
And she destroys me in that t-shirt
And I love her so much it hurts
I never meant to fall like this
But she don't just rain she pours
That girl right there's
The perfect storm
-Perfect Storm, by Brad Paisley
I was sitting at the table cleaning my guns when my nephew decided it would be a great idea to bust into my apartment.
"Cora!" I quirked an eyebrow.
"Yes nephew, hello, how are you?"
"Derek just broke my phone!" Scott exclaimed angrily.
"Why the hell did he do that?" I asked curiously.
"Well first he showed up in the parking garage of the grocery store and scared the crap out of me with some training thing! Then he was mad at me because he caught me because my phone rang. He told me I had to stay away from Allison and then just threw my phone against the wall!" He rushed out flopping down into the seat across from me, eying the guns spread out on the table wearily. I rolled my eyes.
"He's a dick for breaking your phone, but he's got a point. You should honestly be staying away from Allison until you get yourself under control." He looked guiltily down. I narrowed my eyes.
"What?" I questioned.
"I just came from Allison's." I chuckled not surprised. "I had to let her know why I wasn't responding, and then the Alpha showed up." I sat up straighter in my seat.
"Why the hell didn't you lead with that Scott? That's kind of important information. Are you okay?" I asked concerned. He nodded. I let out a sigh.
"Derek's going to want to talk to you. Can you wait for him to get here?" I asked. He shook his head.
"No I have to get these groceries home. I've already been gone for too long."
"Alright well I'll let him know. He'll probably stop over to talk to you tonight."
"What am I going to do about a phone? Mom's going to be so pissed." I sighed.
"Just give me a couple days. I'll pick up a few extra shifts at the bar and get you a new one."
"Derek's the one that broke it. Why don't you just make him pay for it? Don't you have that weird bond thing with him?" I laughed.
"The bond doesn't mean we can control the other person Scott. It just means we're connected." Scott nodded and stood.
"Alright well I need to get home. I'll see you later." I nodded.
"Love you!" I called as he headed to the door. He turned to me and smiled.
"Love you too, Aunt C." Once he was gone I picked up my phone and sent Derek a text.
Scott saw the Alpha. Might be a good idea to go see him. I got a thumbs up emoji in response. PS try NOT to be an asshole. Thxs. I ended the text with a kissy face emoji, and the response I received was an eye roll and middle finger emoji causing me to smile.
"Derek, do you remember when I asked you to lighten up on Scott?" I asked the wolf as he walked into the apartment. He quirked an eyebrow at me.
"Yes?" He questioned warily. I glared at him.
"Then why the FUCK would you break his phone?" He sighed.
"Because I can't teach him if he's distracted by some girl!" He responded angrily. I rolled my eyes.
"Don't pretend you weren't the same way when you were his age. She's the first girl that's shown interest in him and he really likes her. Not to mention breaking his phone was a dick move. He's just going to find other ways to talk to her and now I have to buy him a new one because I'm not going to let Melissa pay for something you broke." I told him just as angrily.
"I had control when I was his age."
"Bullshit, you had a little bit of control. How many times did we end up in training exercises because you lost control and shifted? Good thing I've always been a good fighter." Derek rolled his eyes.
"Well maybe if you weren't so fucking difficult to deal with all of the time, I wouldn't have lost control!" Derek yelled. I scoffed, turned on my heel and headed down to the bar slamming the door on the way out.
The next morning, I woke up to Derek's side of the bed empty. I was slightly thankful because I was still mad at him from our argument the night before and had a hard-enough time ignoring him last night when I got back from the bar. I decided that it would be a good morning to go for a run considering I hadn't gone for one in a while, and now was a time when I needed to stay in shape.
Once I got back to the apartment I noticed Derek's Camaro was back and sighed. Thankfully my phone went off and it gave me a reason to not go in for a few minutes.
"Yellow?" I answered.
"Hey Cor!" Sam's happy voice drifted through the phone.
"Hellllooooo Smamuel. What can I do for ya this morning?"
"I'm actually just calling to see how you're doing…" Sam trailed off. I chuckled.
"You know it's not a bad thing to say it, Sam. I'm doing fine. I think the bonds getting stronger, I've been feeling more bursts of emotion from him, when their strong enough, when we're not touching the last few days. I'm assuming that's because the full moon is less than a week away." Sam hmmed across the line.
"That's good. That's good." I narrowed my eyes.
"What's the real reason you called?" I asked suspiciously.
"I don't know what you mean." I rolled my eyes.
"Are you checking up on me for Dean?"
"No..." Sam said in a tone that didn't convince me at all.
"Jesus Christ. Put him on the phone." I heard shuffling around on the other end and then Deans voice drifted through.
"What?" He asked.
"Don't use that tone of voice with me. You know you can call me asshole. You don't have to have Sam check up on me."
"I didn't know if it'd cause problems with you and wolf man." Dean grumbled. I rolled my eyes.
"You're dumb. You can call me anytime. You're family." I told him.
"I used to be more." I sighed.
"Dean, really?"
"How're things with you and Fido."
"You know, you keep this up and my eyes are going to be permanently stuck in the back of my head." Dean chuckled. "We're pretty good. In the middle of a spat right now, but other than that we're good."
"What's got your panties in a bunch sweetheart?" I chuckled.
"I want him to be nicer to Scott so he will actually accept help from Derek, with the whole control thing. Anyway, we were arguing about it and he told me I was difficult to deal with." Dean laughed at the irritation in my voice at the end.
"Cora, have you met you? You're super difficult to deal with. You're a psycho." I scoffed.
"You're an asshole."
"Hey, it's not a bad thing. Guys dig crazy chicks. You just know how to push buttons is all." I sighed knowing he was right.
"Whatever." I grumbled.
"How's things going with the Alpha situation?"
"Shitty. We can't figure out who it is. It isn't normal. I think it's one that's lost all of its humanity. We got a video of it from a girl's phone and it's a nasty looking mother fucker."
"You need any help?" I shook my head and headed towards my truck to grab my cigarettes. Pulling one out of the box and lighting it up I answered Dean's question.
"No. I know you guys have enough on your plate. We've got it handled here. It's a little harder cause we have to watch our backs with the Argents around. They already tried to kill Derek a couple times. Almost succeeded the first time." I took a long drag of my cigarette as Dean responded.
"Which ones are there?"
"Originally it was just Chris and his wife and his normal goons. My dumb ass nephew is dating his daughter. But crazy Kate got into town when I was out at Bobby's. She shot Derek with a wolfs bane bullet. It was pretty bad. Almost had to cut his arm off."
"Jesus Christ. You sure you don't need reinforcements?" I took another drag.
"Nah. We're good. I've got it handled. I'm just gonna fucking shoot Kate one of these days. She's had it coming for a long time."
"Don't do anything stupid Cora. You don't need the whole clan coming after you." I laughed.
"I'll be careful. I'll let you guys know if something comes up and we end up needing help."
"Alright. Good. I'm gonna let you go though. We just got to our hotel."
"Alright. Don't be a stranger. Tell Sammy I said bye."
"Will do." Dean responded before hanging up. I took the last drag of my cigarette before throwing it down.
"Time to put on your big girl panties Cora." I mumbled to myself before heading into the apartment.
When I entered, I was hit with the smell of bacon and eggs and saw Derek standing by the stove.
"Hey." I responded softly.
"Have a good run?" He asked turning to face me. I nodded.
"Yeah it wasn't bad." Derek turned back to the stove and served the food up onto two plates. He brought them over to the table after shutting off the stove. I pulled out a chair and sat across from him.
"I'm sorry." I told him taking a bite of the bacon on my plate.
"Me too. I'll try to be less of an asshole to Scott." I sighed.
"I guess I'll try to be less difficult." Derek let out a laugh around his bite of his eggs.
"Don't worry C. You're the perfect amount of difficult. You keep me on my toes. As annoying as it is, it's also one of the things I love about you." He told me causing a giant smile to spread across my face.
I was at the bar making sure the night shift was all set, because I didn't feel like working tonight. My phone started going off and I sighed when I saw it was Stiles' number.
"Hello?" I question wearily.
"Cora! You need to get your boyfriend on a tighter leash. He just beat the crap out of Scott's boss." I drew in a deep breath.
"Jesus Christ. Why?"
"He thinks he's the Alpha."
"Fuck, okay. I'll take care of it."
"Meet us at the school in an hour. Scott has a plan. Derek took off with Dr. Deaton. Go make sure he doesn't kill him."
"Okay." I told him stiffly before hanging up. I tried calling Derek, but he didn't answer. So, I tried five more times until he finally picked up.
"What?" He asked into the phone in irritation.
"Come pick me up right now." I demanded.
"No, I might have the Alpha in the backseat of my car. I'm not putting you in danger like that." I scowled at the phone.
"Derek, either you come pick me up right now, or I show up at the school in an hour anyway. Or I just come straight to you. We're in this together, you can't just do shit like this without me." I told him. Derek sighed.
"Alright, I'll be there in 10." He said before hanging up.
"Where's my boss?" Scott was straight down to business when we showed up to the school a little while later.
"He's in the back." Derek told him motioning towards the back window. Stiles leaned around me to peek in the window and scoffed.
"Oh, well, he looks comfortable. Nice job keeping him on a leash, Cora." Stiles said sarcastically. I rolled my eyes.
"He's alive." I retorted. Stiles just looked to Scott who motioned him towards the school. I quirked an eyebrow.
"Wait. Hey. What are you doing?" Derek asked suspiciously. The two boys locked eyes for a moment.
"You said I was linked with the Alpha. I'm gonna see if you're right." Scott answered walking off, Stiles right on his tail. Ha, ha. I turned to Derek.
"This is going to turn out so bad." I mumbled, Derek just nodded in agreement. About five minutes later the air was permeated by what sounded like hundreds of cats choking to death.
"You've got to be kidding me." Derek grumbled as I busted out in laughter. I was quickly silenced after a minute though as a bone chilling howl rung out. It was loud and had me straightening up eyes alert and on the look out for the Alpha, or anything else that howl might draw in. My gun was unfasted from its holster and into my hand quickly.
"I'm gonna kill both of you. What the hell was that? What are you trying to do, attract the entire state to the school?" Derek yelled at the two boys as they came wandering out.
"Sorry. I didn't know it would be that loud." Scott said embarrassed.
"Yeah, it was loud. And it was AWESOME." Stiles exclaimed in excitement.
"Shut up." Derek told him with a glare on his face.
"Don't be such a sour wolf." Stiles retorted causing me to snort. Okay that was a good one.
"What'd you do with him?" Scott asked looking into the backseat, anger evident in his voice. Derek and I exchanged confused looks before looking to see what Scott was talking about. Deaton was gone.
"What? I didn't do anything." Derek protested.
"It's true. I swear." I backed up my mate. Just as Scott was about to speak I felt a sharp pain in my back and let out a loud explicative pulling my gun up and opening fire when I turned and saw Derek a foot off the ground. He had blood dripping from his mouth and the Alpha's claws were imbedded in his back. I continued to shoot at the Alpha.
"RUN!" I yelled at Scott and Stiles. The two took off towards the school. The Alpha threw Derek away from him and took off towards the other end of the school away from my spray of bullets. I quickly holstered the gun and ran to Derek.
"Fucking hell D. Wake up." I exclaimed shaking him. When I got no response, I grabbed him by the shoulders and began dragging him to the Camaro as quickly as I could while keeping an eye out for the Alpha.
I finally got Derek into the Camaro heart pounding a mile a minute. I was covered in blood and Derek was out cold in the back. I could imagine the kind of pain he was in considering how bad my back felt and I was just feeling probably less than half of the pain he was. I took off out of the parking lot and sped off towards the apartment. I grabbed my phone and dialed Anna's number.
"Anna! I need you to get to my apartment now!" I exclaimed into the phone. I could hear the grogginess in her voice as she responded.
"Cora? What's going on?"
"I don't have time to explain. Just get there. I need help Derek's hurt. Bad." I told her before hanging up and slamming down on the accelerator.
I pulled up to the apartment five minutes later, the drive was short when you drove 100 mph the whole way. Anna was waiting by her car a bag slung over her shoulder. I slammed on the breaks and rushed out of the car.
"Help me get him inside." I told her opening the back door. She circled around to my side and helped me pull Derek from the car. The two of us dragged him up the stairs and into the apartment.
"Let's get him on the bed." I instructed. We gently got Derek onto the bed face down and I started working on getting his jacket and shirt off.
"What happened?" Anna asked pulling a bunch of herbs and a mortar and pestle out of her bag and set them onto the counter. I finally got Derek's jacket off and blanched at the amount of blood on his shirt. The whole thing was completely soaked.
"The Alpha attacked us at the school. Shoved his fist into Derek's back." I told her.
"Can you tell if it's healed any?" She asked beginning to put herbs into the bowl. I shook my head.
"No it's still really bad. Please tell me you have a spell that will help." I asked the witch.
"Not a spell, but I can make a salve that should help to offset the fact that it was a wound from an Alpha. It will still take some time for it to heal, just because it's such a bad wound, but this should prevent him from dying before it can heal." I let out a sigh of relief.
"Do you need me to do anything?"
"Clean him up so I can see the extent of the damage. And get some needle and thread, we're going to have to sew the wounds with the salve inside." I nodded and headed to grab a bowl and my first aid kit.
Once I came back into the room I took off my jacket, exposing the mating mark on my shoulder due to the tank top I was wearing. I quickly grabbed my supplies and began to clean Derek's back.
"I knew something was different between you two." Anna mused seeing the mark on my neck. "I sensed it I just couldn't place what it was." She told me coming to help me finish cleaning Derek's back.
"Do you mind?" She asked motioning towards the mark.
"Go for it." I told her knowing she wanted to touch it. She placed a hand on it and gasped.
"Holy shit! You're true mates!" She exclaimed. I nodded. "Cora this is amazing! Do you know how rare this is?"
"Rare enough that everyone thinks it's just a myth." I told her as I wiped the last of the blood off of Derek's back. The site of how bad the wounds on his back were made me sick to my stomach. I could see his ribs.
"Has it matured yet?" She asked hopefully. I shook my head. "No matter, it'll still help. Spit into this." She told me holding the salve up to my face.
"What?"
"C'mon Cora. I'm assuming you know that eventually you guys will be able to help each other heal. It's in your saliva. The bonds not matured so it won't be as strong, but it will help the salve to work even better." It made sense so I did as she asked. She quickly mixed my saliva into the salve and then started putting it into the wounds. My back began to ache again as she pushed it as deep as she could into the wounds. Once she had it all packed in we set to work stitching up the five claw marks in his back.
"How long do you think it will take him to heal?" I asked once we had finished. We walked into the bathroom to wash up.
"Best guess? Three days to be fully healed." I sighed. Monday was too far away.
"Alright thanks."
"Do you want me to stay with you?" Anna asked. I shook my head. I went to tell her thank you when I received a text from Stiles.
Hope you're okay. Assuming you got Derek out. He needs to hide somewhere. We blamed the murders on him… it was Scott's idea don't kill me please. I glared angrily at my phone.
"I do need you to stay with him for a little bit. Apparently, I need to go hide his car." I said in annoyance. "Maybe go maim my nephew." She quirked an eyebrow at me. I just showed her the text in answer.
"Jesus. Alright. Yeah. You want me to follow you and bring you back?" I shook my head.
"No just stay with Derek. I'm not going to go far." I headed out to the Camaro and took off towards the industrial district of town. When Derek and Laura had still lived in Beacon Hills they had bout a building right by the industrial district and had lived in the loft upstairs. The two had sold off all their furniture and stuff before leaving, but they had kept the building. I knew there was a garage on the bottom floor and that was where I planned on hiding the Camaro. After dropping the car off, I had picked the lock to get into the garage, I started walking back to the apartment. The walk took me about half an hour.
Once I returned I sent Anna home to get some rest before her shift in the morning. I pulled a chair in from the kitchen. I sat eyes trained on Derek for the remainder of the night assessing every shift of movement and making sure he was as comfortable as possible. I had cleaned up and the only thing still out covered in blood was the little bit on my sheets from when we had first laid Derek down.
Around 8 o'clock the next morning he finally woke up with a groan of pain. I quickly rushed to his side.
"Cora?" He asked, voice rough from sleep and pain.
"Shh. Shh. Don't move D. You'll pull out your stitches." I told him squatting down on the floor so I was level with his head.
"What- what- ha-" I cut him off giving him a sip of water through a straw which he greedily drank.
"Don't try and talk Hun. Save your strength." I took the water away from him when he was done and sat it on the dresser. "The alpha attacked last night at the school. He shoved his claws through your back. I got you out and had Anna come over. She put a salve in your wound and we stitched you up until your body takes over the healing process."
I pulled the cover away from his back to get a look at the wounds. They had healed a bit in the hours that he had been asleep, but I could tell they were still bad. He went to speak again, but was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"Who is it?" I questioned.
"Sheriff." Derek grumbled out beginning to drift back to sleep.
"Fuck. D. I need you to listen to me. You can't make a sound. Okay? Do you hear me? I need you to stay quiet. Scott and Stiles blamed all of the murders on you. Told the police you tried to kill them at the school last night." Derek didn't respond. Damn it.
I quickly stood hearing another knock on the door. I looked down to make sure I was presentable enough for the company. Tank top, no bra, and shorts. Eh fuck it. Maybe it'll make them uncomfortable.
I headed out through the apartment shutting the door to my room as another knock sounded. Opening the door, I was greeted by Sheriff Stilinski and two younger deputies I was unfamiliar with. I quirked an eye brow and leaned against the door frame. I watched the two deputies' eyes trail over my outfit and linger on my breasts and legs. I smirked.
"What can I do for you boys this morning?"
"You mind if we come in Cora?" Stilinski asked. I shook my head and turned sideways and took a step back and swung out an arm in a "come on in" gesture. As the two deputies followed the sheriff in I sent them a sultry smile. The one winked at me while the other just looked me up and down again in appreciation.
"Coffee?" I asked them as I headed over to the machine.
"No thanks. We need to ask you some questions, ma'am." One of the deputies responded.
"Oh, call me Cora sugar. Ma'am makes me feel old. Do I look old to you?" I asked waving a hand down my body. The two deputies smirked and the sheriff just rolled his eyes.
"When was the last time you saw Derek Hale Cora? I know he's back in town and I know you two have always been close." I quirked an eyebrow in question.
"Why're you asking me about Derek? Is this about Laura? I thought her death was ruled an animal attack." The sheriff shook his head.
"Just answer the question." One of the deputies piped up.
"How about you watch how you speak to me in my house. I have a right to know why you're questioning me." I snapped. The deputy that had spoken flared at me and the other looked surprised that I would so blatantly talk back to an officer. While the sheriff wasn't even fazed considering he knew me quite well.
"There was another attack at the school last night. The janitor was murdered and five teenagers were chased through the school. Two of them say it was Derek who did it." The sheriff responded.
"There any actual evidence it was him?" The deputy douche bag scoffed.
"Eye witnesses aren't actual evidence? Guess you're not as smart as you look." I glared at him.
"Listen shit bag. It's dark at night time and kids have crazy fucking imaginations. Everyone knows Derek was just arrested on suspicion of killing his sister. Maybe they didn't get a good look at the guy and just assumed it was him."
"Excuse me? You better watch who you're talking to la-"
"Stevens. Shut up or go wait in the car." Stilinski snapped. I smirked as Stevens locked up and glared at me.
"It was Scott and Stiles that ID'd him, Cora. Now according to them you and Derek are dating?" I sighed.
"Yeah we are. I haven't seen him since yesterday morning though. He came over for breakfast and then I went to work down in the bar to take care of some paper work. Haven't heard from him since then. He hasn't been answering my calls."
"What'd you do after work?" The quiet deputy asked.
"I went over to Anna Danvers'. She's the manager at my bar. We get together for dinner every so often to go over staffing and stuff and just hang out away from the bar."
"Why?" Stevens asked.
"Because we're friends? I've known her since I was 16. She's been an employee of the bar since I was that age."
"If we go and see her is she going to give us the same story?"
"Yeah since that's where I fucking was. Stop being a dou-"
"I dare you to finish that sentence."
"I dare you to threaten me in my own fucking house one more time. I'll get you fired faster than it takes you come during sex. And from the douchey air you've got going on in betting it's less than fifteen seconds."
"Stevens! Car! Now!" Stilinski snapped. Stevens glared at me and stormed from the apartment slamming the door on his way out.
"If he broke my door I'm charging the department." I told the Sheriff. He let out a long sigh.
"Why are you always so difficult?" He asked with a chuckle.
"All part of the Cavanaugh charm Sheriff."
"You promise you haven't heard from Derek?" I nodded.
"Scouts honor."
"If I find out you're lying I'll arrest you for obstructing justice. Or aiding and abetting. Whichever sticks." I rolled my eyes.
"Come on Noah! I promise. I have not heard from or seen Derek since yesterday morning. If it makes you feel better I'll let you know if he contacts me." Noah nodded.
"Alright. I'll get out of your hair."
Once they were gone and I watched them pull away from the apartment I went back into the bedroom. Derek was awake again staring at the door to the room as I walked in.
"Even the sheriff thinks your difficult." He coughed out. I rolled my eyes.
"Shut up and go back to sleep. You need to rest and heal. Anna said it'd take about three days for you to be full speed again."
