Chapter 10
Lilly and Joe were walking back to her trailer. They had just finished filming a scene together and now Joe was walking her back.
"You don't have to walk me back, you know," Lilly said, smiling up at him. Joe's hand tightened in hers.
"Yes, I do," he told her grimly. Ever since she had gotten that envelope, Joe and all the others had been super protective. Joe in particular wanted to make sure she was never by herself, so one of the Jonases or Oliver was with her wherever she went. He even went so far once, when Oliver was gone and all the boys were filming, to enlist Carl's help in keeping her company, although Joe didn't tell him why. It was all very sweet and everything, but she had to admit; she was feeling a little stifled. She never had a moment to herself anymore.
His reaction to the pictures and the envelope was particularly violent. It was all anyone could do to stop him from going after Creepy—er, Peter—calling him "Creepy" wasn't really so funny anymore—and Nick and Kevin both had to physically restrain him.
"It's really sweet of you, but we're on a movie set. There are people everywhere. I think I'll be okay," Lilly smirked.
"And I think you're taking this too lightly." Joe looked stern and he tightened his hold on her hand.
"You're taking this way too seriously."
"Lilly—"
Lilly stopped, turned to face him fully and looked him in the eye. "Joe, come on. It was probably just a stupid prank or whatever. Has anything happened since then?"
"No," he mumbled, looking away.
"And how long has it been?"
"Six days," he muttered. "But Peter's still staring at you funny."
"You can't know that it was Peter."
"Yeah, I can."
"Joe!"
"Fine, I don't know it was him, but –"
Lilly placed a finger on his lips to shush him. "Chill out. It's not a big deal. It was a practical joke, someone had a good laugh over it, it's over and I'm not that freaked out about it."
"You were," he pointed out, moving her hand and holding it.
"Yes, at first. But after six days with nothing else happening, it's not that big of a deal. And thinking about it, it's not like he got pictures of my room or of me changing or whatever. It's not like he had to—to stalk me to get those pictures. Maybe he had to follow me for a little bit, but there are no pictures of me in our guesthouse or in our trailer." Lilly admonished.
"There's that picture of you sleeping!"
"Yeah, on the couch in the main house. Lighten up!"
"Fine," he sighed.
"Thank you. Now will you let me walk to the trailer on my own?"
He didn't even pretend to consider it. "No."
Lilly was torn between laughing and screaming. "JOE!"
"What?" Joe said. "I'll walk you back and then I'll leave you alone."
"Ugh! That works for now," Lilly said with a grin. She let go of one of his hands and they continued walking, swinging their arms comfortably in between them. They walked the rest of the way in silence.
When they got to the trailer door, Joe hugged her and kissed her on the forehead. "I'll see you later."
He seemed far too willing to leave her alone, a fact that made Lilly suspicious. "There's someone in there waiting for me, isn't there?"
Joe's smirk was all the answer she needed. "I'm leaving you alone now! I'll see you later!" he called back to her and waved cheerfully. Lilly groaned, rolled her eyes and entered the trailer. As soon as she did, she smiled.
Oliver was at the little kitchen counter, pouring himself a bowl of cereal. Lilly ran up to him and wrapped her arms around him and pressed her cheek to his back.
"Ollie!" she squealed happily. "I thought you said you were going leaving set early today!"
As Lilly let go, Oliver chuckled and turned to face her. "I am. But I just want to spend some time with my best friend before I do."
Lilly looked at him consideringly. "You're on Lilly Duty aren't you?"
Oliver made a face and waved that off. "Pssh…like I need to be on Lilly Duty to hang out with my best friend. And yes. I am."
Lilly groaned in frustration. "How many times do I need to tell you guys, I don't need a babysitter!"
"Tell that to Joe…He actually made up a schedule for us based on filming and stuff. And he's encouraging us to stay around you whenever we have the chance. Strength in numbers and all that."
"He's insane!" she exclaimed, running her hands through her hair in frustration.
"He's cautious. And I know you're not going to like this, but I think he's right," Oliver told her pragmatically.
"Not you, too!" she groused.
"Lil, I don't know why you're not taking this more seriously! This is a potentially dangerous situation. A guy was following you around with a camera, he sent you pictures of yourself that he's been taking and a flower and he wants you to be his. If that isn't scary, I don't know what is. You're smarter than that," he said, shaking his head at her. "Just…humor us, alright?"
"Miley doesn't think I'm in any danger," Lilly countered sulkily.
"Yeah, but Miley's only saying that because she doesn't like you spending all that time around Joe."
"What are you talking about?" she asked, perplexed.
"Miley's jealous of you and Joe," Oliver explained like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "She knows he likes you."
Lilly furrowed her brows. "What are you talking about?" she repeated. "Joe doesn't like me."
"Yes, he does."
"No, he doesn't."
"I see you're still in denial. Oh well. We've only got a couple of hours for Lilly and Oliver time, so let's not waste it arguing," Oliver sighed.
"Guitar Hero?" Lilly challenged. "I'll totally kick your butt!"
"You're on!" After a multiple of rounds of Guitar Hero, with Oliver winning each and every one, the two of them collapsed on the couch, laughing their heads off.
"I've missed this," she said after a moment. "This is what I thought we'd be doing all summer. Playing video games, hanging out, skateboarding and waiting for Miley to tell us about her day."
"Yeah, and then you had to go all Hollywood on me," Oliver goaded. Lilly made a face at him. "So how is life as a movie star?"
"I'm not a movie star! I just happen to be in a movie with lots of them," she retorted. "And you would know what it was like if you were around more often."
"You mean stick around here and have nothing to do and no one to talk to? No thanks," Oliver snorted.
"Well what have you been up to?"
The question seemed to faze Oliver a little, because a faint blush stained his cheeks and he started stuttering. "I—uh—you know, just around. With people. People I've met. Here. I mean, around here. I mean, I've just been hanging around town and stuff."
Lilly tilted her head and stared at him. "Oooookay, then."
He tried again. "I mean, I've made some new friends and stuff and we've been hanging out around…just around."
"Oooh, you should bring your new friends to the set! We can all hang out!" Lilly suggested excitedly.
Oliver's face blanked. "Um—yeah—that would be…interesting. Um, so when's Joe coming back for you?" he asked, trying to change the subject.
She checked her cell phone for the time. "Any minute now, actually. I'm filming a scene where Roz confronts Tyler, and then later the scene with Joe where Marcus asks Rosalind for help. It should be pretty fun."
"I saw you guys earlier," Oliver commented casually. "Still pretending, I see."
Lilly blinked at him. "Yeah, well Joe still thinks Creepy—I mean, Peter—is the one who sent the note and the pictures, and he's still staring at me and stuff, so Joe wanted to keep trying to scare him off."
"No, I meant you're still pretending."
Lilly turned to stare at Oliver. "And what is it that I'm still pretending?"
"That you don't like Joe."
Her jaw dropped. "I—what?"
"You…like…Joe," Oliver enunciated slowly.
"That's crazy!" Lilly exclaimed.
"Ha! But you're not denying it!"
"Because…because there's nothing to deny!" she sputtered. "We're friends, Ollie. Just like you and me."
Oliver laughed. "I've never seen you look at me the way you look at him. And I know I've never looked at you the way he does."
"You are insane, you know that?"
"And you're lying to yourself," Lilly shot back.
"I'm your best friend, Lil. I've known you longer than anybody. Heck, I know you better than anybody, and I know how you look at a guy when you like him. And when you look at Joe, that's it."
Joe knocking on the door interrupted before she could respond. Lilly vaguely remembered saying goodbye to Oliver and silently walking back to the school with Joe, thinking about what he best friend had said. Did she like him? Yes, that inner voice in her head whispered loudly. Right now, it sounded a lot like Oliver.
No, she argued the part of her that was desperately fighting to stay loyal to Miley.
Liar. You like everything about him. The way he laughs, the way he talks, the way he holds your hand.
Miley likes him.
But he doesn't like her. He likes you.
He's just a friend.
But you want him to be more.
No, I don't.
Yes, you do.
Well I can't have him. Miley wants him.
But can you imagine him being with her? Touching her hair, holding her close, kissing her –
"SHUT UP!" She didn't realize she had said it out loud— yelled it, really, until Joe touched her shoulder and looked at her worriedly.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
She forced a smile. "Yeah. Everything's just peachy." As he took her hand, she desperately berated the voices in her head to shut up before they got her into more trouble. But as Joe's fingers intertwined with hers and the butterflies turned on again full force, she could hear the Oliver voice in her head smugly saying,
Told you so.

"Girls!" Kenny cried out as he saw his daughters run up to him. They gave each gave him a big hug. He wasn't expecting them to be here. They were supposed to be at home in Los Angeles, but he was so glad to see them. He talked to them on the phone every day, but he hadn't actually seen them in over five weeks.
"Surprise!" his oldest, 14 year-old Cadence said with a grin as she threw her arms around him.
"Mom said we could come visit you!" Andrea, the youngest at age 7 told him matter-of-factly. She looked at him solemnly. "Can we be in the movie?"
"You can't be in the movie! You're too little!" 11 year-old Anna told her. She looked at her dad expectantly. "Right, daddy?"
Kenny grinned and picked up his youngest, who looked downcast. "Sorry, honey. It's a movie for big kids. But you can watch for a little bit while we film."
Andrea perked up immediately and clapped her hands delightedly.
Cadence and Anna were concerned with more practical matters.
"Can we meet the Jonas Brothers?" Cadence asked in excitement. "Are they here?"
"And Miley!" Anna chimed in. "Do you think they'll give us autographs?"
"I'm sure they will," Kenny reassured them, leading them over towards the camera. "And Kevin, Joe and Lilly will be here in a few minutes."
"Is this Lilly girl any good?" Cadence asked skeptically. "I mean, better than Mikayla?" She had read about Mikayla getting fired, which had disappointed her a lot because she had really wanted to meet her.
"She's pretty," Andrea said. "I saw the pictures in the magazines."
Kenny nodded and jostled his daughter in his arms as Lilly, Kevin and Joe arrived. "And she's very, very good." He looked up at his older two daughters. "Better than good."
His daughters looked like they didn't believe him. Kenny quickly introduced his daughters, who were all completely thrilled by meeting Kevin and Joe. They also seemed to take to Lilly really well. After a couple of pictures and autographs, the girls settled down to watch the scene unfold.
In the scene this scene, Rosalind and Marcus were talking in the hallway about Ramona and Julian when Tyler came up and put his arm around Roz's waist and insulted Marcus. Roz told him off, then went to talk to Marcus.
Lilly stood at her locker, getting her books out when Joe came by and shut the door. He leaned against the lockers and grinned cheekily at her.
"My, my, don't you look preppy today?" he commented.
Lilly turned to face him and her lips twitched. "In case you haven't noticed, I am one."
"No, you're not. If you were, you wouldn't be talking to me." An extra dressed as a prep walked by and gave them a look. "What are you looking at?" Joe asked menacingly. The extra squeaked and ran off.
Lilly glared at him. "Was that necessary?"
Joe blinked at her. "Yes."
Lilly rolled her eyes. "Anyway, while we're talking about fashion, you look very Duckie today." Kenny laughed on the inside. He knew his audience would be young, but he really hoped they'd get the reference, or that they'd want to once the movie was over.
"So does that mean you'll leave me for the rich guy in the end?" Joe teased.
"Isn't that how it always goes? Now I just have to figure out who my Blane is."
"Well that's easy. Tyler."
Lilly blushed. "Shut up."
"But I do admit, I am impressed with a girl who knows an 80s reference," Joe told her.
"Please, who doesn't know Pretty in Pink?" Lilly demanded, rolling her eyes.
"Um, 95 of our peers? So is that your favorite?"
Lilly considered for a moment. "It's definitely one of them, rivaled only by Sixteen Candles. I'm a big fan of the Brat Pack."
"No love for The Breakfast Club?" Joe joked.
"Nah. Although Judd Nelson was pretty hot."
"Ahh, so you do go for the bad boy."
"No, I go for Judd Nelson. After I saw that movie, I wanted to be Molly Ringwald."
"Hmmm…John Bender or Jake Ryan? Of the 80s variety, I mean."
"Definitely Bender. Jake Ryan was too…pretty." Lilly shuddered.
Joe gave her a long, considering look and smiled. "You do realize, don't you, that this is the first conversation we've had without insulting each other?"
"Yeah, well we are friends now. It's to be expected every once in a while. Although I did call you a Duckie…"
Joe laughed. "That's not an insult. That's a compliment."
Lilly raised her eyebrows in horror. "A compliment? Now this is starting to freak me out. Let's change the subject. When do you want to meet tonight?"
"Ha! I knew you couldn't wait to get me alone!" Joe crowed.
"Oh, yes. I totally want you," Lilly said sarcastically. "Seriously, though, Ramona wants to meet at 8:00. Is that good for you?"
"Yeah, that's perfect." Joe was about to say more when his expression shuttered and his eyes focused on a point just behind Lilly. She turned and stifled a gasp when she saw Kevin standing there.
"Tyler, you startled me," she said, placing a hand on his chest with her free hand. "You know Marcus, right?"
"We've met," Kevin replied curtly. Focusing on Lilly, he asked, "What are you doing talking to him?"
Joe waved. "Hi, still here."
"Yeah, and I don't know why," Kevin snapped.
"I was talking to Rosalind."
"And now you're not."
Joe groaned. "Whatever. I'll talk to you later, Roz." He started to walk away, but then Kevin said loudly, "What are you doing talking to that freak?"
Joe shook his head and walked away while Lilly whirled on Kevin. "What are you doing?" she demanded angrily.
"He was bothering you!" Kevin protested.
"He was talking to me."
"With him, it's the same thing."
Lilly made a noise of disgust. "What the heck is your problem?"
"My problem is that he's not one of us, Rosie."
"He's my friend, Tyler," Lilly said, shaking her head. "So lay off. And he's not a freak. He's really nice and I'd appreciate it if you treated him with a little respect."
"Let me explain this to you," he began patiently, as if talking to a small child. "You're a cheerleader. He's an outcast. You're popular. He's not. You can't go mixing things up and try to bring him into our circle."
"Believe me, I'm not. I wouldn't wish that on anyone." With that, Lilly turned her back on Kevin and ran to catch up with Joe.
"Hey, Marcus, wait up!" she called.
"Hey. Shouldn't you be with your boyfriend over there?" he asked angrily. "He doesn't want you talking to a freak like me."
Lilly glared at him. "God, will you shut up? Tyler doesn't control me. And he's not my boyfriend. And I'll walk with you if I want to." She sounded irritated. "If it matters to you at all, I asked Ty to give it a rest."
They walked together in silence for a minute. Then he smiled at her. "Thanks," he said softly.
"I told you before, we're friends. That's what friends do." She still sounded surly, and that made Joe grin.
"You're not like the others, are you, Rosalind?"
She smirked. "Call me Roz."
"CUT!" Kenny called, delighted at how that scene had turned out. He had them do it again a couple of times, and then filmed a scene between Lilly and Kevin where Tyler apologized and they shared a little romantic moment.
"So you'll try to be nice to him, for me?" Lilly asked sweetly, surprised and flattered. It was the end of the scene, which they'd done four times.
Kevin took her hands in his. "I'll try. I'll do anything for you." Lilly blushed and smiled softly.
"CUT!" Kenny called again. "Fourth time's the charm!" Lilly and Kevin laughed. "I need Miley and Nick from hair and makeup, and I'll see you three," he said, pointing to Joe, who had been sitting on the ground, watching. "In three hours." Lilly saluted, and the three actors filed out.
"So what did you think of Lilly?" Kenny asked, turning to Cadence.
His oldest daughter's face lit up. "She was amazing! It was like…she turned in to Roz!"
Anna tugged on his sleeve. "Daddy, when are they going to kiss?"
"Kevin and Lilly don't kiss til the end of the movie, and we're not filming that for another couple of weeks," he explained.
"I'm not talking about them," Anna said impatiently. "I'm talking about Joe and Lilly!"
That threw Kenny off. "Joe and Lilly's characters aren't getting together. Kevin and Lilly's characters are."
"But that doesn't make sense!" Anna insisted. "Joe should be with Lilly!"
Kenny looked at Cadence. "What do you think?"
"They have great chemistry," she answered. "And other than that last scene between Lilly and Kevin, it seems like it's written like Roz and Marcus are supposed to be together."
Kenny thought about this for a minute. "What do you think, Andrea?"
She had only been half-paying attention to the conversation. "Joe likes Lilly, right?"
Kenny called over the executive producer, who liked to stay on set and monitor production, the script supervisor and script coordinator, and the assistant director, and they all replayed the footage that had just been shot of Lilly and Joe. Then, they had gone to review footage that from previous days and conferred. Miley and Nick had come in, but Kenny told them to come back in an hour.
Half an hour later, Kenny was shaking his head, wondering why he hadn't seen it before. He called Carl in.
"You wanted to see me?" the intern asked.
"Yeah. Get Jim Baker on the phone." Carl nodded and left. Jim Baker was the screenwriter. He had done the bulk of the writing, with Kenny contributing here and there, and Kenny didn't feel right changing anything without talking to Jim first. Carl came in and handed Kenny the phone.
"Hey, Jim!" Kenny greeted cheerfully. "Uh, listen…we need a rewrite."
--
Oliver walked into Starbucks, looking for his friend. They were supposed to have met 20 minutes ago, but he had a hard time getting away from Miley and Nick and then finding a way to get off set. He felt a little guilty, sneaking around like this, but he knew his friends wouldn't understand. Heck, he wasn't even sure he understood…He spotted her at a table in the corner, wearing a floppy hat and sunglasses, drinking an orange mango banana blend. Her new favorite. He made his way through the room and sat next to her.
"Hey Mikayla, sorry I'm late."

For whatever reason, I was in a really 80s mood today and I watched Sixteen Candles and clips from Pretty in Pink. Thus, the references to the John Hughes movies. If you haven't seen/heard of any of these movies, I recommend them. A lot. Personally, Duckie is one of my favorite movie characters of all time.
Kenny's daughters are named after the awesome Vrai Amour, YoureMyFavoritex, and -xXAndreaVampXx-! You guys rock!
So I was really excited today about numerous things, namely the Jonas Brothers' song "Tonight" (love love love love love!) and the new Harry Potter trailer!! Sooooo excited!
I'd really love to know what you all thought; whether you liked it or not, suggestions, questions, constructive criticism…I love and appreciate it all!
