She was courageous, she never refused a challenge, she kept going through that well because she had a mission. A Something She Needed to Do. Her courage and her will kept her going through the bad times, she'd told him so herself.
He needed to bring her back, had a Something He Needed to Do. He was brave enough to do it. He was determined.
Sitting at the bottom of the dry well, ankle the size of a softball, tears and snot running down his face, he thinks to himself that courage is doing him a fat lot of good.
