Chapter 5

Madison was propped up on her side and her hindmost surrounded by pillows when Bobby and Ellen arrived Sunday night.

"It's good to see you sitting up," declared Bobby before kissing her on the cheek.

"I'm a little tender, but it does feel good to be off my back."

Ellen kissed Madison on the lips while Bobby placed a laptop on the rollaway table. "Mom and dad send their love," she added.

"How are they?"

"Real good now they know you are alive and kicking. Once the initial shock wore off; they offered you the use of their Sequim summer house when you get out of here."

"I'll give them a call later and talk to them," suggested Madison. "Oh shit! I don't have a phone, it got wrecked and I need a new one."

"I can buy you one tomorrow," offered Bobby.

"Thanks, remind me to give you my credit card before you leave."

An hour and half elapsed before Madison yawned and the Spillanes made their goodbyes.

Seconds later the blonde powered up her computer and conducted a search on Doctor Helen Magnus.

"Holy fucking shit!" exclaimed the patient when presented with a picture of a curly blonde Helen at the age of thirty-seven. The picture had been taken in 1888 and Madison was beside herself with the reality of what Helen had told her. As she read about her achievements in being one of the first female doctors during the Victorian era and a scientist with the Royal College of Surgeons in London, Madison's admiration grew in leaps and bounds. The article went on the state that Helen was a Teratologist who studied abnormalities of Physiological development. Doctor Helen Magnus was an international expert in her field and well respected amongst her peers.

Madison returned to the photo and was astonished by the smiling woman's beauty. After perusing all the available information on Doctor Magnus, she was convinced more than ever that, she had no place in the woman's life.

Regrettably, Madison closed her computer and settled down for the night.

Helen, Ashley, Will and one of the teams from the New York Sanctuary spent Sunday night in the freezing cold snow of Denmark pursuing a creature that possessed the power of invisibility. After capturing the small panda-like Abnormal, Helen drew a blood sample and tagged the white furry animal before releasing it back into its mountainous habitat.

The teams recorded and observed the being covertly until Monday then departed on a plane for Canada.

It was near midnight when a trio of exhausted people returned to Sanctuary. Helen caught the look of concern on Will's tired face when Ashley took a stumble while stepping out of the lift. She smiled crookedly at the man who had more than a friendly interest in her daughter and said, "Goodnight Ashley, Will, have you got a moment?"

"Sure Magnus, what's up?"

Waiting for Ashley to move out of earshot, Helen began, "Will, you have my blessing to pursue a relationship with Ashley."

Taken aback by the unexpected comment, Will blushed brightly, "Uhm, that obvious hey?"

"No, not really, but please tread carefully, I'd hate to have to kick your arse."

Chuckling nervously, Will responded, "I will and thank you. I have been meaning to speak to you about it."

"Who knows, you may just be the one to tame her wild side," teased Helen.

Will chuckled again, "I doubt that Magnus, besides I like that side of her."

Shaking her head, Helen ended the conversation, "Goodnight Will."

"Goodnight Magnus."

Entering her office, Helen collated the data they had collected before going downstairs to the Lab and analysing the blood samples. Due to her gift, Helen required minimal sleep to remain fully functional and worked non-stop into the next day. Her quest for knowledge on the new Abnormal pushed aside all lingering thoughts of Madison.

Madison removed the sim card from the back of her inoperable cell phone and fitted it into the new one. She was surprised to discover Bobby had left Helen's phone number on a folded piece of paper inside the box. Smiling at her best friend's none too subtle hint, she added 604 717 2624 to the contact list.

After speaking with Ellen's parents, Jack and Toni for some time, Madison finally accepted their generous offer of the holiday home in Sequim and ended the call with a promise to talk to them the next day.

Several fellow Officers from the Precinct visited on and off that evening and Madison slept right through until the next morning.
