A/N: Guys I am so sorry about leaving you all to the wolves! I really am! I have been so busy with work and trying to finish up school here in a year so I can get a big girl job – ugh you have no idea! But here is another chapter, so please enjoy!
I do love you all, I promise I do! And hopefully I will have more chapters up in the near future! c:
Hugs and kisses! Muah!
"So uhm," the sandy headed girl started, throwing her eyes up at the passing trees, "You know where we're going?"
"Yes," The fox demon nodded his head and then finished, "But I'm not sure what we're looking for." he added with a sweat drop slipping down the side of his face.
"No surprise there." Mako commented with a chortle, she knew how Genkai could be. The two demons walked at a leisurely pace over the ever-changing terrain before Kurama stopped in his tracks, apprehension clear in his emerald orbs. Mako halted not shortly after and turned to look at her red headed, demon friend. They had stopped in a forest on the outskirts of what looked to be a barren wasteland. Dead shrubs dotted the area, while twisted, dark trees stood their power in the wooded area.
"Kurama?" she questioned, her head cocked to one side. And then, her body suddenly became aware of everything; hypersensitivity of sorts. The bitter wind sweeping across the back of her thighs, causing the hairs on her arms to stand on end. And the stench of blood rushed into her nostrils and she knew immediately, just by the stink, why Kurama had stopped. Fear struck her senses as her slender fingers grazed the finger placements in her hiraikotsu, her knees bent bracing her body for a brute attack.
"If you will allow me to have the honors, Mako." Kurama asked in a polite manner, not out of the ordinary for his gentleman like style.
"Be my guest." The red head had this one in the bag as her fingers slowly released her hiraikotsu and it dissipated into thin air. An uneasy smile played on her lips as she watched him pull a single hair from his head. His stance wasn't that of a fighters, more of just a human's who wasn't lead astray from his daily life of coffee and work. Just a man. No more, no less.
That was until the hair in his hand unexpectedly grew in length and lashed out at a nearby tree, the hair recoiling as the rose whip. The tree snapped like a twig beneath the harsh attack of the whip and from the splinters arose an ominous figure, like that of a ghost. Like a cross feline, it hissed as it swirled in a spiral pattern.
"-Kuramaaa" The miniscule, grey demon swirled the same route like a mad man walking in circles as the fox demon's name was slowly pulled from it's lips.
"Tell Mukuro we are coming." Kurama started, losing the light in his eyes as a strong unhappiness painted his voice. The formless monsterette never faltered from his slow, twisting motions as the saddened emerald orbs finished, "And the next time she feels the need to check up on us," His long lashes fell over his eyes, "To not."
The demon let out a screech as it shot up into the air, it's destination unknown by the female of the pair. Mako just stood, and stared at the spot in the sky where the demon had flown off to, while Kurama's whip disappeared.
"So we're going to –" Mako began as a lump formed in her throat, still watching the moving sky, empty branches flourishing around her periphery. The color fled from her face when she knew what the other demon was going to say, she just didn't want to hear it.
"Alaric."
"Isn't that where-" she tried covering the uneasiness in her tone, but she couldn't help the gulp that followed.
"Yes." The fox demon answered curtly, noting her voice, his eyes questioned her status as a demon while her large eyes sank from the sky. She was biting her lip and her demeanor abruptly became very inert and invalid. "But, I do not believe you'll be fighting her." His emerald eyes collected an agonized young woman, as her face fell and her eyes searched for something in the tall grass. There was more of a story to her than meets the eye and as she chewed on her bottom lip he silently put a hand on her shoulder and smiled gently at the shadow demon.
"We should keep going." His soft hand lightly squeezed her shoulder and she released her lip from it's self inflicted torture with a silent nod. The corners of her mouth upturned as she cocked her head to one side, the concern had evidently left her mind and they both started off into the forest towards what may possibly be a death wish, for all Mako knew.
She had never met the demon, Mukuro, but she had heard things from others, bad things. Mukuro wasn't a demon to be toyed with, and she definitely didn't play around when it came to dealing with troublesome spirits within her realm. In fact, the tan girl was pretty sure she's had nightmares about this demon world war head.
The pink headed, fan wielder ran through the forest on Hiei's heels after what she believed was an impromptu game of "Catch Me If You Can" that he had started. Kari dodged trees and branches, focusing on keeping her feet mainly on the ground, her burnt orange eyes cast upward watching the dark demon fly through the trees, perched on the stump of what once was a tree and then next second her was in a branch on a completely different tree.
Fuck me. What is he? Part Kenyan? Fuck.
Her pink lips were parted in a ragged pant, red blood cells dying fast in her bloodstream as she pushed herself to keep up with him, beads of sweat rolled off her forehead and onto her tattooed cheeks. Flushed, she tripped over an undulating root poking out from the dry ground. Her conduct as an opponent against Hiei slightly faded but only for a moment. Hiei gave a fleeting look back and watched the girl somersault over the root and then regain her footing on the ground, stepping back up to the original pace.
After she caught her balance, a determined frown appeared on her face as she made it her new goal to catch up to him. Accelerating her speed, her eyes turned up to the passing dead trees creating a whirlwind of brown tresses around her and soon she found herself dizzy.
Red eyes glanced and skipped along the tree trunks to find her pink head of hair swerving from left to right amongst the trees; it wasn't very good camouflage and he wondered how she expected to survive with such an eyesore like that and no speed to compensate for her lack of obscurity. With a smirk, her wish was denied and to make it better he decided he should pick up the pace.
Forcing the nausea away, Kari didn't know where they were going. Why they were going. Or whom they were going for. But she did know that she was going to fucking lay him out when she caught up to him and give him a piece of his own medicine. Although she wasn't sure she could go much faster than the rate she was already running in the midst of the bypassing branches. Her heart pulsated in her chest and her lungs retched in their walls, forcing blood through her body and breaths became much more difficult to give and take as the color from the trees faded into a white fog. Kari felt her limbs grow dense as the fog over took her eyesight. The faintness returned as her vision was clouded. The only thing she could focus on was the sound of her own heart beating while her eyes sank into the back of her skull.
Hiei felt her spirit energy briskly fade away and turned on his heel to see the red ribbon in her hair tumble down with her lifeless body. Her eyes reeled back, going white. The fire demon changed directions, leaping down to catch the unresponsive form in his arms before she battered her body against the ground. Crimson orbs skimmed her body for any sort of blood or harm that would have caused her to lose consciousness, but he found nothing. She must have just fainted from exhaustion. But he had never seen a demon react this way, usually they just gave up, never pushing themselves past the limit their body could handle. Her energy was still sensible, just very weak as he turned her body over in his arms.
He carefully stood up, his eyes narrowing at the girl's skin color. Hiei watched as the girl's chest rose and fell with each sinking breath, her eyebrows were knit together in pain as she wheezed for oxygen.
His instincts initially berated himself for pushing the girl. However he caught himself showing pity for the female demon and shook away the initial thought. Growling at his emotions, he took off.
"Imbecile." Now he cursed her for not keeping up or for making him feel this way about another, whatever the case, it made him hold her more tightly against his torso as his form gracefully glided amongst the trees.
Yusuke stood, his arms crossed as his foot impatiently tapped against the ground waiting for the others to arrive. He glanced around at Botan and Kuwabara before lifting his arms up into the air and folding them behind his head.
"This is stupid." Kuwabara stated, to no one in particular.
"You're stupid." Yusuke cast his eyes sideways at the fiery red head.
"NO URAMESHI, YOU'RE STUPID!" Kuwabara's hot head temperament.
"Now boys!" Botan began jumping in between the two.
"You should learn, Botan, to not try and interfere with the inevitable." Hiei merely stated, as he appeared from the profound forest, a young girl splayed across his arms. Botan's eyes widened at the sight of Kari draped, motionless.
"What happened?!" The blunette's mouth fell agape added to her dumbfounded expression. "You were supposed to take care of her, Hiei!" The fire demon's eyes just tightened choosing to her ignore her comment.
"I am no one's babysitter." Venom dripped from his words before he finished, "She just fainted." Hiei touched one knee to the ground and lowered Kari to the ground with ease when her face scrunched up and her eyebrows knit together. She mumbled something in her slumber as her breath hitched in her throat. Botan's face upturned and released a sigh.
"She's sleeping." Botan walked away mumbling something about needing a vacation.
"What happened?" Yusuke brought his arms down and questioned the shorter demon.
"Hn. Couldn't keep up." Hiei stepped back, hands in his pockets.
"Oh boy." Sarcasm seeped from Yusuke's mouth with an added eyeroll.
"I'm pretty sure you were supposed to just get the girl here, not wear the girl out, shortstack!" Kuwabara fussed, leaning closer to Hiei's face.
"She does that from time to time." A voice spoke.
"AHHHH! WHERE'D YOU COME FROM?!" Terror etched on Kuwabara's face when Mako popped up beside of the group, startling the wolf demon. Mako just stared at him with a blank expression before she took a deep breath started to speak.
"When she's in her demon form, her spirit energy sometimes…" The girl brought her slender tan fingers up to her chin and tapped, searching for the right words, "…overrides her body."
"So she's dead?" Kuwabara questions nearing the wave demon's face.
"No fool. Do you not listen?" Hiei spat.
"Yeah Kuwabara! Does she look dead!?" Yusuke joined in.
"I think what she means is her body can't handle the amount of energy she emits – so her mind shuts down to put it simply." Kurama diverted attention spans by speaking up, checking Mako's face to make sure his results were right. The tan demon nodded, affirming him and then inhaled deeply looking at the stronghold not far ahead.
"So is this it?" fret tugged at the blonde's lips.
"Yep. This is where Genkai wanted us to go." Yusuke twisted his head to the side to eye the fortress.
"…why….no….no more…." Kari was still stuck in her dream state.
"Should we-" Botan began wondering if they should wake the demoness from her slumber. Mako just scratched her head and uneasily laughed before cocking her head to one side.
"Yeah but-"
"…not my… not my…. apple pieeeee…" Kari rolled over onto her stomach, face planted into the ground. Mako pinched the bridge of her nose and shook her head in shame.
"You guys should let me do it." Mako's eyes rose and she muttered something in a chant form, lowering her palms to the smaller girl's shoulders, "She's not exactly an angel when you wake her up."
Kuwabara popped an eyebrow up while Yusuke had a skeptical scowl stitched into his face. The blonde demon sent a webbing of purple lightening over Kari's body and the smaller demon's muscles went rigid as a cry of pain was emitted. Pink hair jolted up and Mako bounded back away from the demon.
"WHY'D YOU DO THAT?!" Kari squealed, a deep pink saucer forming in her claw. Her arm stretched back, as the glowing saucer grew, "THAT REALLY FUCKING HURT!" Kari unleashed the oval of energy, bringing her arm forward. The pink spirit energy flew at Mako. Kari showed her fangs and her breath became ragged as another ball formed in her opposite hand. Mako nimbly dodged the energy ball and braced herself for another attack. A feral snarl came from Kari's pink lips as she hurled the next spirit saucer at her friend from overhead.
Mako chuckled at her friend's feisty nature, "Kari." Her eyes locked onto the attack coming her way as she nudged the ball away with her own energy. The second attack fled her form cutting through several trees behind her.
"ANSWER ME!" Two more balls formed in Kari's clutch, as her feet took a fighting stance across from her friend.
"Jeez. That's a whole new level of PMS." Kuwabara muttered. Kari's ears picked up on Kuwabara's voice as her eyes left her friend's body and turned to the ground.
Screaming something incoherent, she turned on her heels flinging two glowing energy balls at Kuwabara. Yusuke pulled Botan to the side, while Hiei and Kurama watched the two spheres of spirit energy, flattened out as they made contact with Kuwabara's stomach. Hiei watched as her eyes burned orange and the tattoos on her cheeks flickered with each ragged breath she took.
"Calm down." Smiling gently, Mako pushed a purple mist over the small demon, and suddenly it was like her rage was turned off. Emerald eyes watched the blonde bat her eyelashes at the back of Kari's head, as the pink-headed demon calmed herself. Kuwabara twitched on the ground as Yusuke looked over his shoulder and died in a fit of laughter.
Kurama eyed the two girls, Mako stepped forward a few paces and Kari's slowed her gasping to now normal breaths. Her eyes returned to the normal dull orange and her spirit energy became more common than it had been a few seconds ago. The sandy blonde scratched her head again before crossing her left foot in front of the other.
"You good now?" Mako asked, laughter danced in her eyes.
"Yes." Kari said taking deep breaths. "But next time, can you go a little easier on electrocuting me?" Kari didn't make eye contact with her friend, but Mako knew she was apologizing in her head.
The two demons walked towards the group, and Kari's orange eyes glared at Kuwabara gathering himself off the ground.
"Maybe next time you should watch your mouth and be respectful of who you're with." Kari spat at Kuwabara, obviously not sorry for splitting him with her spirit energy. Hiei hid a slight smirk, Kuwabara got his feathers ruffled.
"You little twerp, I oughta!"
"You will do nothing." Hiei said stepping in, walking towards the castle that loomed ahead. "Both you and everyone else know that." He finished before taking off towards his counterpart's living quarters.
"Shall we forget this spat and follow Hiei." Kurama stated, once again gathering everyone's attention.
Kari was having a stare off battle with Kuwabara before Botan nudged the carrot top forward ending their tiny match off. Botan annoyed by the fact that she worked with such fiery individuals kept pushing the fighting Kuwabara ahead. After the little "morning" display of demon from Kari, Yusuke and the rest made their way through the remaining clearing and were walking into the fortress of one of the three kings.
"Wait." Kari said, "Where are we going again?"
Mukuro's castle.
